With the sole purpose of spreading a positive message across Chatham-Kent, the fourth annual 12 Days of Positivity are gearing up for a start date of Sept. 23. Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff joined Captain Positive, Opti Woman and the organizing committee in making the announcement at the office of major sponsor TekSavvy over the lunch hour on Monday. The 12day event will run Sept. 23 to Oct. 4 with themes

Why is there a guy in spandex in our office?’ and then I’m like, ‘This is pretty cool’ and four years later we’re still going,” Aube said at the kick-off event. “I certainly feel like there is more positivity around Chatham-Kent and that’s why TekSavvy is a sponsor and will continue to be a big sponsor because it makes a huge difference in our community.” Captain Positive and Opti Woman, who visit every elementary school in the municipality, were giving out capes to kids at the event. “Positivity is contagious… and when it spreads, it spreads like wildfire,” Captain Positive said, thanking the media for helping to spread the word. News ServiceOntario centre closing Sept. 30 in Chatham

News of the permanent closure of the ServiceOntario centre on Grand Avenue East in Chatham caused some upset late last week, but government officials say the search for a new service provider for Chatham is underway. Further, following the initial announcement the centre was to close as of this past Monday, provincial officials say the operator was convinced to keep it open until Sept. 30. The Ministry of Government and Consumer Services (MGCS) issued the news bulletin about the closure Aug. 22, with the date of “permanent” closing of Aug. 26.
“The service provider who operates the ServiceOntario centre in Chatham is extending their business until the end of September,” said Harry Malhi, spokesperson for MGCS. “We have full intention of keeping a ServiceOntario centre in Chatham and are actively involved in finding an alternative service provider.” People were advised in the bulletin to go to centre locations in Blenheim, Dresden or Tilbury for counter service or access more than 40 services online. While the average citizen visits a ServiceOntario centre once a year, the same is not true for staff at auto dealerships. Ownership changes on trade ins and new license plates and ownership information for car sales can happen multiple times a day.

Some Chatham dealers say they already use Wallaceburg’s ServiceOntario centre, as a representative from that office makes regular stops at their businesses to handle pick up and drop off of relevant information and materials. Others, such as Van Kesteren Hyundai, had, until Monday, been using the Chatham office of Service Ontario. General manager Jeremy Van Kesteren said the announcement of the sudden closure caught he and his staff by surprise. “We’ve been using Chatham for years. That’s a big pain in our butt,” he
said of the closure. “We just took it for granted. It was always there.” As for what the dealership will do going forward, Van Kesteren said they would have to send someone out of town to handle licensing. “We’ll probably end up going to Wallaceburg or Tilbury. We want to definitely be organized and try to not go more than once a day if we can,” he said. The closure of the Chatham ServiceOntario has left Van Kesteren scratching his head. He believes it should be a profitable endeavour for an entrepreneur. “It’s almost a guaran-

And he knows where it should be located – close to the cluster of dealerships in central Chatham. “It should go down on Richmond Street. Somebody would clean up,” he said, referring to the usage by all the dealers located along Richmond. As more and more can be done online, such as plate renewals for the average car owner, Van Kesteren said perhaps that has cut into the business for the franchise owner.
What hasn’t been decided yet is where the new arena would be located, and the size and scope of the project. “We will be determining the where and size questions and it will all go through council,” Canniff said in a phone interview. “It will be a very open process and will come to an open session of council.” The mayor also said meeting with Senator Victor Oh, who supported the commercial rice growing initiative undertaken this year involving the Ridgetown Campus of the University of Guelph, was a highlight of the trip. “It’s important that we continue to innovate and develop the agri-industry which is the backbone of our economy,” Canniff said. The mayor said municipal officials were able to meet with representatives from other provincial parties as well. “You can’t beat getting face-to-face dialogue,” he said.

Positivity abounds It’s back – 12 Days of Positivity in Chatham-Kent. Whether you are a glass half full or half empty kind of person, you can’t deny that the positivity movement first inspired in 2016 by Darrin Canniff and Jason King is gaining momentum and supporters across the municipality. When Captain Positive and Opti Woman set foot into an elementary school or show up at a community event, kids’ fingers start flying to throw up the Positivity sign, and the dynamic duo gets swarmed to receive hugs and have pictures taken. And why is that? Because kids like to be around happy, positive people who make them feel good about themselves and the community around them. Kids get it. And now more adults are getting it too. It feels good to be positive; to spread goodwill and happiness around, instead of constantly bashing or naysaying people and events in the community. That doesn’t mean people should always assume everything in the municipality is sunshine and roses, because it’s not. But we do have so many amazing things going on with positive, energized people behind them. As Captain Positive said, positivity is contagious. When we lift people up instead of bash them down, that feeling spreads. Think about how you feel when you pay for someone’s coffee in line at Tim Horton’s, or shovel your neighbour’s driveway or visit someone who is sick or lonely – it’s a good feeling and matches the feeling of the person you are helping. We have issues that need to be addressed in Chatham-Kent, but we also had an incredible summer of fantastic events that helped put us on the map. The quality of life those events and projects give to the community, as well as a can-do attitude, are what draw people and business here. With that come jobs and more opportunities for our young people. So, raise your half-full glass during the 12 Days of Positivity and vow to be a positive influence for your family, business and your community and take that feeling with you the rest of the year.

TNVR program needed again Sir: I am writing in response to complaints arising against the municipality regarding so-called problems with supposed “feral” cats. I would like to address these disturbing complaints on several levels. First, I would like to define the term “feral.” Does it mean cats with no homes? Cats who have been dumped and abandoned by callous owners? Cats no longer wanted because of a new baby, a move, a new girl-friend/ boyfriend? Cats terrified of humans? Cats starving and dying because of human cruelty? Second, people need to be very careful in naming a colony a feral one. Often, there may be cats now “feral” in the colony, but they ALL would have been domestic cats or kittens of domestic cats at one time, and for sure some of them are not “feral” presently. They are helpless lives betrayed by humans, so, please, anyone complaining, place the blame and shame where it belongs, not on the felines struggling to survive, but on the humans who have betrayed
them. Now for a history lesson on this very topic. Some 15 years ago, because of complaints of this very nature, the municipality asked for volunteers to form a committee to formulate solutions to the problem of homeless cats. I was part of the committee eventually created under the direction of the Licensing Manager of Chatham-Kent. We named the group CK CAT, for Chatham-Kent Cat Assistance Team, and after some two years of intense meetings and much discussion, we formulated policies and procedures to hopefully help both cats and humans solve the tragic problem of growing numbers of homeless cats in the county. We received a $15,000 PetSmart grant, $5,000 from the municipality, and a further $5,000 grant from a community fund to begin the TNVR (Trap/ Neuter/Vaccinate/Release) we had decided was the most effective way to resolve the situation. We began to take names
from people, charted colonies, purchased traps, set up clinics with local vets, and ultimately over the next seven years TNVR’d more than 350 “feral” cats across Chatham-Kent. The one important stipulation for this help was that the colonies had to have a caretaker who fed, watered and supplied shelter to the cats we handled. Some four years ago, the committee was called to a meeting and informed by the chief legal officer of the municipality that the decision had been made to disband CK CAT because too much of the Licensing Manager’s time was being spent on the paperwork for this much needed and worthy endeavour. The percentage of her time was 10 per cent! Ten per cent to save lives, to put a stop to the birth of thousands of unwanted kittens, and to stop complaints from uncaring, callous, and indifferent people. The members of CK CAT struggled for two years to try to continue this im-
portant work, but without insurance, a place to meet, or a charitable donation number, we finally, with heavy hearts, admitted defeat and disbanded. Tragically, since then, literally tens of thousands of unwanted kittens have been born in this municipality. I wonder what percentage of C-K’ s budget goes to pay the salaries of the legal team? Maybe they could take a little cut and restore CK CAT to the invaluable, compassionate work we were doing. One final suggestion, instead of complaining, why don’t the complainers contribute to a TNVR program again and solve the problem for both humans and helpless beings? I myself presently have nine rescues, dropped off because farms will always look after them. They are all, amongst dozens, that I have spayed/neutered and given a home to. Zion church options up for discussion The Chatham Voice
While it may no longer be a formal place of worship in the future, one Zion United Church member is hoping the building will keep on being a place for community. Zion United Church, located at the corner of Mull Road and Pinehurst Line (Kent Road 14) west of McKay’s Corner, is set to be closed this fall, and Zion adherent Chris White is looking for ideas and support to keep it open as a community space. White is hosting a meeting in the church basement on Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m. to get input and ideas from the community. “Zion United Church is going to be closing and I am attempting to organize a community group to see if we can come up with a way to keep it a community and public space,” White said in an e-mail. “I am encouraged by the success that the
Mary Webb Centre has had, although I do not want to copy their model just their idea of taking a church that is going to close and turning it into something that is good for the community.” The first church, a one-story frame structure, was built in 1864 on land donated by Joseph Nash. In 1876, the property was transferred to the Trustees of the Zion Church of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Canada. In 1899, the present church was built. The Zion Methodist Church officially became Zion United Church in 1925. A kitchen was added to the structure in 1974. In 2013, the congregation celebrated 114 years of worship in this building and 149 years of church services on the site. But he did not discount the possibility of the local service expanding into the neighbouring community. “We would certainly look at the costing side of the program and would not be adverse to expansion if

He added that Amherstburg explored the possibility of Chatham-Kent handling policing responsibilities there several years ago, but it just wasn’t an option. “There is a rule where the territory has to be contiguous. You have to be attached to your own ju-
risdiction. They (Amherstburg) were an automatic no,” he said. The City of Windsor took over policing in Amherstburg on Jan. 1, 2019 and has the contract for the next 20 years. Another option for Leamington is to re-establish its own police service, but MPM did not recommend that route. “This option is allowable
under the Act but would be the most difficult to pursue. At least two municipalities have examined this possibility in the past few years, but it would require the construction or refurbishment of a building that meets all of the standards for a police facility,” the report stated. “It would also require significant one-time, start up expenditures.”

Flight ‘school’ spots booked within hours By Mary Beth Corcoran mary@chathamvoice.com
When you love to fly, you want to share that joy with other people. That’s what the COPA Flight 203 Chatham-Kent pilots want to share with area youth during their second annual COPA for Kids event Sept. 7. Unfortunately for some kids but good for the event, the 200 spots available for young people have already been taken since registration opened Aug. 24, but organizers ask people interested to keep watching the COPA website in case of cancellations. Held at the Chatham-Kent Municipal Airport, COPA for Kids is a one-day free event for kids
eight to 17 years of age to introduce them to the world of general aviation. Kids spend about two hours of their day learning a bit about airplanes, flying, and their local airport, topped off with a flight in a small aircraft. To date, the program has introduced over 23,000 young Canadians to general aviation, according to organizers and COPA pilots Dave Barnier and Aaron McPhail. Last year, the first year for the local COPA for Kids event, saw the 150 spots for kids here snapped up in just six hours, and McPhail said they would love to take more, but upping the spots to 200 this year is all they could do with the resources available.

The Thames Art Gallery (TAG) will present two new exhibitions, starting Aug. 30 and running to Oct. 20. Featuring work by some of Ontario’s foremost potters and glass workers, Fireworks 2019 and Fuel celebrate some of the best artists working in these media today. Fireworks 2019, a celebratory exhibition of handcrafted works in clay and glass, is organized by Fusion: The Ontario Clay and Glass Association. Wallaceburg arena opening delayed The Chatham Voice
Problems with the installation of a rubberized floor have pushed back the opening of the newly renovated Wallaceburg Memorial Arena until Sept. 20. Pre-season use of the arena was due to begin Sept. 3 with the opening of the regular season originally set for Sept. 16. “We have been informed by the sub-contractor responsible for the rubberized floor

that delivery of the material will be delayed,” said Recreation Facilities Manager Jane McGee in a media release. “The project was proceeding on schedule but without the flooring, we can’t use the arena.” Within a week of learning the rubber flooring was delayed, staff had a meeting with user groups to explain the situation and provide solutions in the interim. The delay had nothing to do with the April fire at the facil-
ity, officials said. The new flooring was part of a $1.8-million renovation. Minor Hockey Association (WMHA), Wallaceburg Figure Skating Club and Wallaceburg Thunderhawks Junior C team are among the main users of the arena. The Thunderhawks regular season opening game Sept. 21 is expected to proceed as scheduled. Staff are working with user groups to find required ice time in other arenas.

Fitting, food-filled farewell So, we bade farewell to one of our nephews on the weekend, as Connor is off to Toronto to live with his father and complete the final two years of his high school education. How do we say goodbye and good luck at the Corcoran residence? Barbeque! He has tasted a variety of items over the years off the Big Green Egg. Teenagers are always fun to cook for, as you can pretty much barbecue a shoe, add some spices, and watch them inhale it. OK, kidding, no shoe. But Connor likes a lot of what we’ve cooked over the years. Especially chicken wings. Then again, he isn’t and wasn’t alone on Saturday. We gave the Egg a workout it deserves. Eleven family members and friends stopped by and enjoyed the food. It all began with some wings. I only grabbed three pounds of them from Lenovers, as I thought with all the food, it would be a nice sampling size for everyone without filling them up. I made mistakes. First mistake: three of the people in attendance Saturday were teenagers. They mow down wings
Bruce Corcoran at alarming rates. Connor and his cousin Matt are two of my biggest fans when it comes to me cooking wings. Second mistake: I grabbed the wings from Lenovers. Actually, this is not really a mistake; the problem is I bought on weight not numbers. I walked into Lenovers, took a look at their wings and immediately started salivating. They were huge! Sometimes that does not necessarily translate into tasty, but I’ve had only excellent results from anything I’ve barbecued from Lenovers in the past, so I wasn’t worried. But due to the size, there were fewer wings than I anticipated, and I didn’t compensate by getting more. That was my second mistake. I dusted them up with Tsunami Spin seasoning and grilled them up at about 375 F for 24 minutes, flipping every six minutes. One thing about Tsunami Spin is that the chicken it’s on smells incredi-
ble as it’s cooking. It also tastes pretty special too. The wings went very quickly. No one even wanted sauce. Next up, vegetable candy: Prosciutto-wrapped asparagus. A thin layer of herb and garlic cream cheese is spread on the thinly sliced prosciutto, and it is wrapped on individual sprigs of asparagus. You cook it at 375 F for eight minutes-ish, flipping once, and you have an incredibly simple and amazingly tasteful delight. These too went very quickly. Next up, the main courses: chicken and hamburgers. My sister-in-law Jane did up the chicken, which she obtained from Schinkels’ (best chicken breasts around). She marinated the chicken and then when we served it, it was covered in a blend of avocado, onion, jalapeno, tomato, cilantro and lime juice. Delicious. Mary Beth made the burgers, from a recipe our daughter found on the Internet. These burgers are stuffed with a mix of cream cheese, bacon, jalapenos and shredded cheddar cheese. Mary Beth didn’t add any seasoning, filler or binder. And they were
awesome. Although, I did want to season them before putting them on the grill (habit), but was discouraged from doing so. As good as the chicken was, we had folks waiting for the second round of burgers (only so much room on the grill). With all of this, there was salad, home made guacamole, a meat-andcracker plate, and local corn on the cob. No one left hungry, despite the fact I wish I had cooked more wings and maybe more prosciutto and asparagus. The meat-and-cheese tray didn’t get completely devoured, and there was some leftover chicken (but not much). And the next day, we cooked more chicken breasts and ate them with a spinach salad with cheese, strawberries, blueberries, carrots and balsamic vinaigrette. Healthy, and very, very tasty. We cooked extra chicken to include in various dishes throughout the week. And that, my friends, is a proper Big Green Egg weekend, filled with a variety of offerings and enjoyed with family and friends. Oh, and there were a few cold beverages on hand as well.
