A group of Chatham-Kent farmers have teamed up with several government organizations to further investigate agricultural phosphorous runoff. Excess phosphorous is considered to be the main cause of the algae blooms that seem to crop up annually on Lake Erie. On Louis Roesch’s farm, many kilometres away from Lake Erie, a new phosphorous reduction and monitoring system is being tested. The system collects and filters tiled runoff from a 25-acre plot
of land that contains seed corn and grain. Roesch said local farmers want to be part of the solution. “An algae bloom is being forecast for Lake Erie in the next few weeks and I think it’s important that people become aware what the agricultural sector is doing to help stop runoff, he said. “Both rural and urban communities have roles to play in making sure our river and lakes remain as clean as possible. Colin Little, agricultural program co-ordinator with the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Area (LTVCA), said his organization, local farmers and
the Kent Federation of Agriculture have teamed up to test the unique phosphorous filtration system. It features two holding tanks, a catch basin, and two automated and programmable water testing stations. After a heavy rain, the runoff flows into the first holding tank, where it is filtered through mulch and Phoslock – a patented phosphorous-locking technology. It goes into the second tank and through the same filtering process, before slowly draining into the catch basin. From there it is discharged into the municipal drain. The water emanating from

here in Wheatley.” Hope said the sample sites could help stop some of the finger pointing that’s taking place. He said farmers are unfairly being blamed for the phosphorous levels in Lake Erie. “We’re going to identify whether the myth that agriculture is responsible is factual or not,” he said. Hope pointed to municipalities around the Great Lakes basin as contributors. “We have grey water discharge,” he said of storm sewers that take urban runoff and spill it directly into streams and rivers that empty into the Great Lakes. Hope also pointed fingers at urban residents, saying too many over-fertilize. “People put fertilizer on their front yards. Some people put
enough fertilizer on their front lawn that would do for 25 acres of land,” he said. He added there are numerous outdated sewer systems along or feeding into the Great Lakes where storm and sanitary sewers are linked. After particularly heavy rains, it they can lead to the spilling of raw sewage into the waterways. Phosphorous also builds up in lakes and rivers as plants break down, releasing the mineral naturally. Hope said historic phosphorous runoff has settled in places such as the riverbed of the Thames River. Heavy rain or spring runoff pushes that out into the Great Lakes. “You get all that sediment built up in the river basin that gets pushed downstream,” he said.

Final flurry to sign up for election The Chatham Voice
On the last day to announce one’s intention to run in this fall’s municipal election, six people came forward, and one withdrew. It was the final flurry in a busy final week at the municipal clerk’s office. East Kent incumbent David VanDamme withdrew from this fall’s election at the last second. A day earlier, Chris Glassford pulled out of running for council in Wallaceburg. In terms of additions over the past week, Amy Finn and Don “Sparky” Leonard filed their papers to seek council seats representing Ward 6, Chatham. So too did Don Fuoco, Gordon Thomas and Penelope Duchesne. Jordan Dell, Ward 1; Mary Anne Udvari, Ward 4; John Wright, Ward 3; Anthony Ceccacci, Ward 2; Jamie McGrail, Ward 4; and Amy Dalton, Ward 2, also announced their intentions to run for council. Allan Traylor, who sought the mayor’s chair in 2010, is back at it, as he filed to run
for the position this fall as well. Rich Gebal seeks to represent on the English Catholic board. John Paul Balagtas and Eric Montgomery look to each earn a seat on the public school board. Bernard Tremblay has filed to run for trustee with the French separate board. They join mayoral hopefuls Darrin Canniff, Robert Power, Alysson Storey and Harold Atkinson, who will go up against incumbent Randy Hope. Council hopefuls in Ward 1, West Kent, are incumbents Bryon Fluker and Mark Authier, as well as Mark Pastorius and Melissa Harrigan. For Ward 2, South Kent, Art Stirling, Henry Svec, Mary Clare Latimer, Tanya Bondy and incumbents Frank Vercouteren and Trevor Thompson have announced they are running. In Ward 3, East Kent, incumbent Steve Pinsonneault signed up to do it again, while MaryAnn Hawthorne will run as well. As for Ward 4, North Kent,
Jessica Brooks, Dylan McLay, Steven Scott, Patricia Sylvain and Joey Cyples announced their intentions to run, as did incumbent Joe Faas. Up in Ward 5, Wallaceburg, Aaron Hall, Randy McNeil, Nicolas Cadotte and incumbent Carmen McGregor have filed their papers. And in Ward 6, Chatham, incumbents Doug Sulman, Brock McGregor and Michael Bondy are joined by Marjorie Crew, Larry Vellinga, James Thompson, Ryan Jackson; Chris June, Kirk Hooker, Drew Simpson, Les Banks and Karen Kirkwood-Whyte. Scott McKinlay, Randy Campbell, Patricia Pook, Carol Bryden, Janet Barnes, Louise Aitken, David Argenti, John Mrnik, Bob Demers, Pierre Lambert, Brenda Rumble, Shannon Sasseville, Ruth Ann Dodman, Derek Robertson and John Van Heck are seeking positions as school board trustees. A bloomin’ problem When the water turns green in Lake Erie, we’re all to blame, not just farmers. Here in Chatham-Kent, the farmers seem to be leading the way in terms of efforts to reduce phosphorous winding up in our watershed. There are five test sites for phosphorous filtration systems in place at the edge of various fields in Chatham-Kent, as researchers hope to see significant reduction in the flow of phosphorous off the fields and into municipal drains, our streams and rivers, and ultimately the Great Lakes. Mayor Randy Hope made an interesting point recently when he used the term “myth” to describe the common-held belief that agricultural operations are to blame for the algae blooms. He added that municipalities, with faulty sewer systems, and rural homeowners, with the penchant for heaping fertilizer on their lawns, might be the bigger culprits. Perhaps they are unwitting co-conspirators, but agricultural practices here and south of the border for decades contributed to phosphorous buildup on agricultural land, in municipal drains, streams and rivers leading into the Great Lakes. Tiled fields quickly send excess water following a heavy rain right into nearby waterways, sending nutrients such as phosphorous and nitrogen, with it. Think of all how much farmland in the heartland of the U.S. ultimately drains into the Great Lakes. That includes dairy-heavy Wisconsin, and agriculture-rich Indiana. Here in Ontario the vast majority of our province’s agricultural land also drains into the world’s largest freshwater system. Lake Erie, plagued by algae blooms on and off since the 1970s, is the shallowest of the Great Lakes. The western end of the lake is particularly shallow, and thus the water is warmer. It’s also home to the mouth of the Maumee River, which flows out of Indiana, through Ohio and into Lake Erie via Toledo. This year, that’s where U.S. scientists see the algae blooms already forming. Some farmers here are experimenting with phosphorous reduction filtration. If it’s successful, the big hurdle will be convincing widespread use of the systems, here and in the U.S., where the president seems at best indifferent to the environment. Still, it’s a starting point, one in which local farmers should be proud to be involved.

Photo shows trash incinerator Sir: Just an update correction for the photo from July 19 edition of The Chatham Voice. Upon seeing the photo I knew exactly where it was. Part of your description on July 26 of your edition, you claim that this was an old fertilizer plant and a rendering plant. This was only partly true. You were correct that this is in fact a fertilizer plant. But the smoke stacks were actually part of the old city incinerator plant,
where they burned garbage from the city, not a rendering plant. While being a transport driver, I hauled fertilizer into and out of this facility for years as well from the rendering plant (Darlings) which is across the CN/VIA tracks, south of the tracks, not in this photo. The fertilizer plant was part of C.I.L. Chemicals, (Canadian Industries
Limited) which was accessed from King street east into the facility. The C.I.L plant closed in the early 1960s, and I hauled the remaining dry fertilizer from here to the C.I.L plant in Ingersoll in 1964. In the Google aerial view you can still see part of incinerator and its part of the remaining stacks, C.I.L took down their portion, but not the incinerator plant because
it was owned by the City of Chatham at the time. The Google photo shows this as mainly covered by brush and trees that are there now. As for the rendering plant (Darlings) it is actually across the tracks (CN/VIA) on the south side now all mainly bush, which was accessed from Park Street into the facility at the time.
Sir: The Performing Arts Program at St. Andrew’s United Church, Chatham, recently completed its fifth season. The Saturdays at 7 at St. Andrew’s concerts have been very popular in the community since initiated in June 2013. Approximately 9,500 people have attended 31 Saturdays at 7 over those five years. The Windsor Symphony Orchestra has now performed concerts at St. Andrew’s for three seasons, with 11 concerts attended by approximately 2,500 people. The Performing Arts Committee of St. Andrew’s wishes to thank
all those who have helped make these concerts such a success. A special thank you must go to all the musicians who presented a variety of musical renditions with the competent leadership, talented accompaniment and solo performances of Devon Hansen, Director of Music at St. Andrew’s. Many guest performers, choirs, bands and groups from Chatham-Kent, Detroit, Toronto, New York City, Waterloo and Windsor have joined with St. Andrew’s Chancel Choir over the years to present these concerts. St. Andrew’s is especial-
ly proud to provide a forum for amazing and young musicians to perform and share their talents. We also thank the many businesses in the community who help promote the concerts through adverting in programs and welcoming the display of posters on their premises. The support of all those who attend is truly appreciated for without an audience it is not a concert. Appreciation is especially expressed to The Chatham Voice for promoting the events through the Community Voice
column as well as various articles and photos. Chatham-Kent is indeed fortunate to have media that positively supports events in this community to help make it a great place to live. Saturdays at 7 at St. Andrew’s will continue in 2018-19 with six concerts and the Windsor Symphony Orchestra will perform three concerts in the St. Andrew’s sanctuary. All are welcome to attend.

International school opening By Aaron Hall Contributing Writer
An international high school is set to open its doors at the former D.A. Gordon Public School in Wallaceburg. Jessica Brooks, the newly hired principal at the Edward International Academy, said there has been construction going on for several months at the King Street building. “The whole west wing that used to be the portables is now dormitories,” Brooks said. “We’re going to be boarding students here. We’ve added a cafeteria, a dining room area. We’ve changed around the office space a little bit, but for the most part the classrooms are still the same.” Brooks said currently there are eight students taking an English as a second language class at the school. “We’re going to be an internation-
al high school,” she said. “We’ll be running classes from Grade 9 to Grade 12. The first batch of students are coming from China, but we’re hoping to get students from other areas of the world, and domestic students as well. It has been pretty frantic; there is a lot going on. A lot of face-lifting to do, walls changing around. Now we’re working on landscaping and making it presentable on the outside.” Brooks said she has been an administrator in private schools for more than 20 years. “Running private schools in Ontario is very different than the public school principals,” she said. “The way that you interact with the Ministry of Education is all different. We are handing out the Ontario Secondary School diploma, so there are things we have to do with the ministry to

Athletes’ Fuel Cup underway in Chatham The Chatham Voice
The Athletes’ Fuel Cup is underway at Thames Campus Arena in Chatham. Three teams, comprised of athletes who work out over the summer at Athletes’ Fuel Strength & Conditioning at Erickson Arena in Chatham, will play a round-robin format, with the top two teams playing in the Cup on Aug. 15 at 7:30 p.m. One team is captained by Calgary Flames defenceman T.J. Brodie, a second by Buffalo Sabres forward Seth Griffith, and the third by Jamie Schaafsma, who plays for the Fort Wayne Komets of the ECHL.
THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 2018
Each team has 15 players. Brodie’s charges include Joseph Raaymakers, James McEwan, Brady Pataki and Austin Thompson. Griffith, meanwhile, has Grayson Ladd, Trent Fox, Ross Krieger, and Grant Spence on his squad. Kyle Hope, Brendan Harrogate, Lucas Vanroboys and Nolan Gardiner are some of the key players for Schaafsma. The teams compete weekly. On Aug. 6, the evening begins with a skills session beginning at 6:30 p.m., followed by a game at 7:35 p.m. That happens again two days later, as well as Aug. 13, followed by the Aug. 15 championship evening.

years. As for this year’s nominees, Pappas, born in Chatham in 1973, was playing Junior C hockey by age 14 with the Dresden Kings. After having won the Western Jr. B championship with the Chatham Mic Macs in 1989-90, he was drafted in the third round by the OHL’s Soo Greyhounds. While with the Greyhounds, Pappas won three consecutive OHL championships and played in three straight Memorial Cups, winning one in 1992-93. From there, he went on to play for the University of Western Ontario, and won the OUAA championship. And in 1995, Pappas played for Team Canada at the inline world championships, winning silver. He played in a pre-season game with the Vancouver Canucks in 1996, but went on to play in the British National League, where he helped the Slough Jets win the league championship two years running.
Pappas retired from hockey after an ACL injury. Chris Bourne, also born in Chatham in 1973, won gold in pre-novice men and gold in pre-novice pairs with partner Sherry Ball at the 1987 Western Ontario Section Championships. The pair moved to Quebec a year later to train and competed in the national championships. In 1989, Borne and Ball won Canadian Novice Pairs gold, and struck gold again in International Novice Pairs competition that year in Germany. In terms of individual competition, Bourne skated at seven consecutive national championships, winning bronze in Canadian Junior competition in 1991. As a pro, Bourne performed as Prince Charming with Disney on Ice, and skated with the Blades on Stage group. Other performers there included Elvis Stojko and Bourne’s sister, ShaeLynn.

Kinsmen history in C-K spans 90 years
By Mary Beth Corcoran mary@chathamvoice.com
For 90 years, the Chatham
Kinsmen Club has been a part of the community, helping to build dreams and provide a safe place for kids and the com-
munity to gather. From the former Kinsmen Auditorium which was synonymous with community events, to the Kinsmen Arena additions and Kinsmen Peewee Park, the Chatham club has been a big part of this area.
“The Chatham Kinsmen Club was founded in 1928 and we’re the 16th club in the organization,” said executive member Bob Hughes. “The first club goes way, way back to 1920 and that was the Kinsmen Club of Hamilton. It’s an only-Canadian service club; we’re not affil-
iated with anybody else in the world.” The celebration dinner Saturday night was a way for the club to acknowledge 90 years of service, and they were joined by local politicians as well as Town Crier George Sims for the milestone event.

He currently is a skating coach at the Granite Club in Toronto. Pateman began refereeing in 1972 after playing minor hockey in Chatham, officiating CMHA and OMHA games before moving up to the OHA in 1974. From there, he was an official for the International league from 197579. He started training for the NHL in 1979, and did games in the AHL, IHL and CHL. Pateman refereed in the 1982 and 1983 Memorial Cups, before becoming a linesman in the NHL, where he worked 650 regular season games, 24 playoff games and
the 1990-91 NHL all-star game. From 1995-2001, he refereed United Hockey League and IHL games. And from 2011-2017 Pateman served as supervisor of officials for the East Coast Hockey League. The 1977-78 Major Midgets won the OMHA AA title that year, becoming the first championship team in a dozen years from Chatham. A decade later, the Major PeeWees won the Silverstick tournament in Watford, qualifying them to play in the North American Silverstick in Port Huron, Mich., which they won. That same year, they won the AA OMHA championship.

Open House at The Chatham Voice Readers, please mark Aug. 15 down on your calendars. We’re having an Open House at The Chatham Voice’s new offices on Sass Road. Between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., stop by our location at 71 Sass Rd. Unit 4, and get a tour of the building. We’re also having a fundraising barbecue – all funds raised will go to help Ebony Vandenbogaerde, the 12-year-old Chatham girl who is in hospital recovering from spinal surgery, and faces life as a paraplegic. The family is going to need a lot of support in the near future. Her story appeared in the July 26 Chatham Voice. We’ll also have door prizes and draws, and don’t forget to sign our birthday card. We’re turning five this summer!
Bruce Corcoran It’s hard to believe it’s been five years for The Chatham Voice already. Time flies when you are having fun. When Jim Blake and I started this paper back in 2013, we did so with a simple mantra in mind: “Local, local, local.” We are locally owned, the articles are locally produced and focused on local people and events.

Our mantra is ‘Local, local local’ at The Voice nothing short of amazing. Michelle, my ex-work-wife, never seems to run out of energy. She approaches every task with zeal. She may be our graphics person here, but her knowledge, experience, and positive attitude in most other facets of the newspaper business are greatly appreciated. Jeanine Foulon has been a ball of energy ever since she agreed to help us in ad sales more than a year ago. Jeanine, Jeanine the

We do as much as possible in terms of production of our paper right here in Chatham-Kent. The only thing we can’t accomplish here is the printing. We leave that up to the good folks from McLaren Press Graphics in Gravenhurst. Everything else is done right here at our Sass Road office. We moved here in June to bring the newspaper bundling and inserting elements inhouse, as our former office on Dover Street didn’t have warehouse space. Here, we write the stories, build the advertisements and lay out the newspaper every week, and now prepare the papers for our delivery people. It’s all under one roof. No other newspaper in Chatham can boast of such extensive local efforts. Independent newspapers such as The Chatham Voice feature ownership and staff with vested interests in their community. We at The Voice, all live here. The five years wouldn’t have been possible without the Herculean efforts of dedicated staff. Mary Beth, Fatima and Michelle have all been here since Day One. They keep me grounded, and are a treat to work with. Where else can I be pelted by foam balls? For the record, I usually deserve it, as I’ve either pranked someone in the office, or made a wisecrack remark. Mary Beth, my better half, has to put up with me at the office and home, so she deserves angel’s wings and a halo. Fatima, my current “work wife,” doesn’t put up with my jokes, giving as good or better than she gets. Her work getting us set up in the warehouse and leading the way each Tuesday is

Sales Machine is an apt nickname for her. Nadine Bax continues to sell special events for us, and her connection to the community is certainly appreciated. That’s our core right now at The Voice, but we are looking to add a salesperson in the near future. We have additional freelance support. Sarah Schofield has been underutilized by us, but her photography work is excep-
tional. Aaron Hall, one of the owners of The Sydenham Current in Wallaceburg, is a longtime friend. We share items of importance, to help get the information to the people of Chatham-Kent. I must also mention Greg Hetherington and the folks at CKXS 99.1 in Wallaceburg, another locally owned, independent media outlet. Greg and I chat weekly about what’s in our
paper, and what’s going on in the community. We have some pretty incredible support. It all works to deliver diverse content to you, the reader, every week. From news to features to opinion articles, we have local writers and photographers capturing life in C-K and package it up weekly in The Chatham Voice So, please stop in Aug. 15 and say hello, have a bite and help Ebony and her family.
