Breast Buddies paddling in Italy By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com
Members of the Breast Buddies Dragon Boat Team stopped by Chatham-Kent council chambers recently before heading off to Italy for international competition. The team of paddling breast cancer survivors was to leave Sunday to compete in the International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission’s Dragon Boat Festival. The event takes place every four years, and brings teams from around the globe. For Breast Buddies member Janet Ridgers, this year’s event offered her the trip of a lifetime. “For the first time in my life I’m going to Europe,� she said. “If I had not been diagnosed with breast cancer and joined this team, I would never in my life have gone to Italy.� Ridgers and the team attended the festival four years ago in Sarasota, Fla., and eight years ago in Peterborough, Ont. She said receiving recognition at council June 25 was a moving event. “Mayor Randy Hope was so choked up. It took him a while to get his voice. He was very emotional. Everyone’s life is affected by cancer,� she said. Despite the emotions, Ridgers said the event was “a really wonderful moment for this team.�

on hand. The breast buddies have been around since 2001. In a previously published Chatham Voice article, Breast Buddies member Margaret Oxford said the team is comprised of about 40 people. “Some are shore buddies, women who can no longer paddle, but still support the team,� she said. Ridgers said she and Oxford actually joined the team the same day, May 22, 2008. Oxford said the
camaraderie is quite special. “They want you in the boat to prevent future cases of breast cancer and they want you in the boat because of the social element and support system,� she said. “Breast cancer survivors run the risk of developing lymphedema,� Oxford said, referring to a condition that causes the swelling of the arms and legs. The physical workout can help prevent it.

Nearly a year after it closed – and more than six months after it was supposed to, Chatham’s Fifth Street Bridge opened Friday evening. Closed since early July of 2017, the bridge reopened
at 6 p.m. June 30. It was to reopen no later than Dec. 22, 2017, but construction delays on the Fifth Street Bridge project pushed its completion date back six months. In previously published reports, municipal officials said the contractor,
Looby Construction out of Dublin, Ont. ran into delays from the outset, and will pay penalties for missing the completion deadline. Work was to begin on the bridge in May 2017, right after RetroFest, but it ultimately didn’t start
until the first week of July. Municipal officials say there will be one lane of traffic open in each direction and there will be pedestrian access on both sides of the bridge. There will be ongoing utility work until approximately the fall of 2018.

dragon boat phenomena to give breast cancer survivors an opportunity to gather and enjoy intense upper body workouts together, and provide support to one another. It began in 1996 and has since expanded around the world. According to McKenzie, “It is an approach to promoting health and raising breast cancer awareness that is driven by women with the disease. It reaches out to other women
and offers them a message of hope and support. It is helping to change attitudes toward ‘life after breast cancer,’ and it encourages women to lead full and active lives. It is making a difference.” Oxford said initially, people were reluctant to encourage breast cancer survivors to tone their upper bodies in fear it would lead to the recurrence of cancer. But studies show that’s just not the case.

Farmer donates antique tractors The Chatham Voice
Thanks to a local farmer, two charities in Chatham-Kent will receive the proceeds of a vintage tractor raffle. Tom Robert of Pain Court has refurbished two antique tractors – a 1939 John Deere Model B, valued at $7,500 and a 1954 Massey Ferguson 50, valued at $6,500 – and donated both to be given away in a raffle to benefit community health care in Chatham-Kent. A total of 400 tickets will be sold for $100 each, and proceeds from the sale of the tickets will be split evenly between the Foundation of Chatham-Kent Health Alliance and the Chatham-Kent Hospice Foundation. The two winning tickets will be drawn at the 2018 International Plowing Match & Rural Expo in Pain Court on Sept. 22 at 4 p.m. on the main stage. Robert and his family have been impacted by cancer and he wanted to do something to support those who are dealing with the disease, including those in their last stage of life. The raffle benefits both the CKHA, which treats people with cancer, and the local hospice, which helps comfort people nearing the end of their life, many of them with cancer as well.
“My family has dealt with cancer a lot and I wanted to give back something to the community where my loved ones were cared for,” said Robert in a media release. “One of my passions is repairing and refurbishing farm equipment, so cleaning up a couple of vintage tractors and putting them up as prizes seemed like a great way for me to help those going through the same circumstances my family did.” Robert decided to donate two tractors and a partnership between the Foundations of the CKHA and the Chatham-Kent Hospice was born – the first time the two organizations have ever officially worked together. “I couldn’t be happier to be part of this historic partnership between our two organizations,” said Mary Lou Crowley, Executive Director, Foundation of Chatham-Kent Health Alliance. “We are so grateful to Mr. Robert for identifying the Foundation of CKHA as well as the Hospice Foundation as the charities he’d like to have benefit from the raffle, as the funds raised will make a great impact on patient care in the community.” “We truly appreciate Mr. Robert’s extraordinary generosity in donating these two beauti-

Hard work finally pays off Forty years is a long time to wait for a dream to come to fruition, but long-time supporters of a new, bigger animal shelter in Chatham-Kent don’t have to wait any longer. With an official ground-breaking at the new Park Avenue location done, construction on the 6,300-square-foot facility can begin, making more room for rescued animals, adoptions, green space and a community room for fun and education. If you talk to Dr. Bruce Warwick, a shelter volunteer for four decades, and a huge supporter of the new shelter project, there are many people who put in the work over the years to keep the current shelter going and raised funds for the new shelter. The fact the new facility is a municipal building, brought to life by public fundraising, is a collaboration Warwick can see setting the tone for future partnerships between important community needs and municipal council. Working together to make things happen that are important to the people of Chatham-Kent is a trend that should continue. Not only will the building be bigger so PAW staff and animals aren’t stacked on top of one another, the potential for education, more adoptions and community outreach is unlimited. Opportunities for school children to learn more about animal care and rescue, and outreach to seniors in long-term care facilities are added bonuses that never could have happened easily in the current location. Fundraising co-chairs Art Stirling and Marjorie Crew, with municipal council and senior staff and the hundreds of people who worked hard to raise 50 per cent of the funds, deserve a huge round of thanks from the community for their dedication, perseverance and willingness to put in the work to get the job done. By early next year, Chatham-Kent should have a new facility to be proud of and will have set a positive example of how to work together to fill a need in the community.

Help, not hindrance needed Editor’s note: This letter is addressed to Mayor Randy Hope. Sir: I am wondering who is the genius that plans the construction for the downtown core because it appears that whoever it is wishes to kill the downtown. The residences and businesses of the downtown have been putting up with constant construction for over a year now (new sidewalks, Fifth Street Bridge, condo, curbs, King Street resurfacing) and this latest bit is just an insult added to the injury. It is the Friday (Friday is one of the busiest shopping days) of a long weekend (makes the day an even busier shopping
day) and whomever has decided today is a good day to block King Street East parking off completely and to reduce the street it to just one lane made another mistake. The businesses along here are struggling enough and now there is the inconvenience of having one of their busiest shopping days shut down without any notice. If the powers that be that make these decisions would have given it a two -second thought, they would have realized that Tuesday (the first day back after the long weekend) would have been better for this fiasco since it will be a slow day
to start with and the loss of it would have had almost zero impact to businesses, but nooooo, they have to shut down business on what is normally a very busy shopping day. Come on already, stop killing the downtown and start helping them out or at least giving them some consideration. If you think I sound ticked off, you are right. I work, volunteer, shop and live downtown and you are making my life really frustrating and difficult. As a disabled person who relies on walking and taxis to get everywhere in this city, your construction and detours are costing
me extra monies I do not have (hundreds of dollars over the last year) and making it impossible for me to get to where I need to be. If you are going to continue with this kind of construction/deconstruction and inconveniencing, maybe the joking slogan people are saying about Chatham right now should become the new official slogan – “Welcome to the City of Chatham, the Home of YOU CAN’T GET THERE FROM HERE!” Please, please, please start helping the downtown instead of hindering it.
Sir: Re: The Sale of the Lighthouse Inn and its memories The sale of The Lighthouse Inn and whatever becomes of it when the new owners take over is as one of my siblings said, is “the end of an era.” Built in 1947, the restaurant at the mouth of The Thames River was a
favourite stop and outing for dinner for many people in this area of Ontario and Michigan. I have many memories of going out to The Lighthouse Inn with my parents and other family members. The fish dinners were always memory making, and the view of the lake, espe-
cially if one went to the roof deck, was spectacular. There were boat cruises and bus tours that used to go out the back roads of the area with The Lighthouse Inn their destination. I did not realize that the restaurant had been closed for almost three years and the idea of new
owners tearing it down for some other sort of development truly is sad to consider. Those of us who have been patrons of the Lighthouse Inn over its years of operation though, will always have fond memories of the time spent there.

Remembering O.T. Myers

With the skies threatening, the waves gently lapping at the shore’s edge, and to the sounds of kids splashing about in the background, a group of Mitchell’s Bay residents gathered June 27 to remember a local legend. The Mitchell’s Bay Area Association held a dedication for the late O.T. Myers, who many called “the Mayor of Mitchell’s Bay.” Myers, who passed away in April of 2017, now has his name on a memorial stone placed on Mitchell’s Bay Wharf. Gary Jenkins, speaking on behalf of the area association, said Myers is missed. “He’s a gentleman who did a lot for this community and the Bay area,” he said. “I knew O.T. for many years. We did a lot of different projects, from picking up branches to raking leaves, whatever was going on, O.T. got involved and helped out.” Jenkins added Myers al-
ways paid it forward. “If we needed him, we just asked,” he said. Larry Cadotte, a local Kinsmen, said Myers was an important part of that service organization. “He worked very collectively with the community and with the Kinsmen. Ask him to do anything and it got done,” he said. “It may have been done O.T.’s way, but it got done.” Cadotte added he considered Myers “a great friend. To many people, he was like a father.” Myers was a strong family man of equally strong morals, Cadotte added. Roy Myers, brother of O.T., said the family was humbled to see the commemorative stone. He thanked the area association on behalf of the family. “He was a great guy to many and I sure as hell miss him,” he said of his brother. “Thanks for this. It’s something to remember him by.” While Myers’ name is the only one to appear on the commemorative

Conference. Guillotte has been a volunteer with the hospice since 2014. She brings heart and compassion to her role as reception vol-
unteer, and ensures that every visitor is treated with respect, dignity and love. As a volunteer receptionist, Guillotte greets all visitors with a warm, friendly smile and professional manner. She embraces any and all educational opportunities to grow both professionally and personally to ensure she has the tools and knowledge to support hospice families. Everybody, not everything, welcome We’ve had all sorts of visitors at our new offices here at 71 Sass Rd. And that includes a few unwelcome ones. I’m not talking about thieves, and thanks to the good folks at R&T Security Services, we are armed and alarmed against those as well. No, I’m talking about ants. I walked into the kitchen last week to see an army of ants up on the kitchen table, attracted to a butter knife left out. We killed the table-top ants, but I knew their friends would be back. Ants communicate by using pheromones and leave such a trail when they find a good food supply. The trail will run from the colony right to the food, and in no time, the other ants come and check things out. So, despite the fact we killed all visible ants, we knew their buddies would show up. And they did, only to enjoy an ant trap. Man, do they love those traps. So our problem actually got worse before it got better, as the pesky beggars found the new “food” supply and sent new pheromone messages out. But as each one visited the trap, their time on the planet instantly became much shorter. A full day after implementing the trap, the number of ants dropped dramatically. Buh-bye. Andy had the task of wiring up the office last week, putting sensors on doors and windows, and setting up the system in general. We’re wired up and appreciative of the quick effort. Angry old man
Sometimes I rant on Facebook, poking fun at folks, such guys with the Millennial Look. I’m talking about the guys with the huge beards, man-buns (ugh) and other such attire. I saw one of these guys wearing a knitted hat during a recent heat wave. I hope he didn’t let his fashion addiction give him heat stroke. Then again, he had nothing on this fella I saw late last week. As the temperature pushed past 27C, and the humidity rolled into C-K, I noticed this pedestrian with a black hoodie zipped up to his chin, with the hood pulled up over his hat. Wow. Sweat city. Hope he stayed hydrated. I’ve long moved past form over function in terms of clothing. If it’s hot out and I’ve got a lot of running around to do, I will wear shorts during the workday. Why sweat more than you have to? I am stubborn, however, in that I try to stay away from using the air conditioning in the vehicle.

Just two people came forward last week to toss their proverbial hats into the ring for the fall municipal election. Patricia Sylvain announced her plans to seek a seat for North Kent, Ward 4. Brenda Rumble joined the list of school board trustee hopefuls. She is running for the St. Clair Catholic District School Board trustee position for West and South Kent. They join mayoral hopefuls Darrin Canniff and Alysson Storey. Council hopefuls in Ward 1, West Kent, are incumbents Bryon Fluker and Mark Authier, as well as Mark Pastorius. For Ward 2, South Kent, Henry Svec and incumbents Frank Vercouteren and Trevor Thompson have announced they are running. In Ward 3, East Kent,

I had to laugh recently on social media where someone accused me of burning coal to cook food. The person basically accused me of being a user of a non-renewable resource. Umm, I use lump charcoal, not coal. There is a HUGE difference. Coal is the mineral anthracite, a fossil fuel composed of carbon and created over millions of years by the pressurizing and long-term breakdown of organic materials such as plant remains. Charcoal is produced by slow heating of wood or other combustible substances in the absence of oxygen. The lump charcoal I use comes from wood. That’s a renewable resource. Does burning lump charcoal give off greenhouse gases? Yes. So do natural gas and propane.
What bugs me
Naturally, as I burn my charcoal to barbecue, I’m outdoors. And later in the evenings, those pesky mosquitoes decide to show up for a bite to eat, with me as the target. The folks at Thermacell sent me a couple of Patio Shield devices to keep the little beggars at bay. These little cylinders have a simple operating process. You heat a small pad that contains a version of a natural insect repellent found
in chrysanthemums and what is given off repels the mosquitoes. It uses a small butane cartridge to provide the heat. The Patio Shield is supposed to provide a zone of protection about 4.5mx4.5m. So, I should be protected on the patio, or by the hot tub. I’ll let you know how it works.

Recently, I entrusted my wife’s sports car to the service department of Heuvelmans Chevrolet-Buick-GMC-Cadillac for a major overhaul and was pleased with the service. However a week later, a trunk latch failure (no fault of the service department) mixed with a sudden rain storm while attending a council meeting resulted in the picture above. And thanks to all the quick social media offers for a raincoat and a car pool. The staff at Heuvelmans retrieved, dried out and restored the vehicle to a condition superior to before. They completed this work with an apology and no bill whatsoever. So this story is two-fold. First, to Frank Barnier, Chris Ilisevic and the whole Heuvelmans organization, I commend you for displaying customer service above and beyond the call of duty and Secondly, to the citizens of Chatham-Kent reading this note, this a shining example of the local business community ethic and why we should all continue to support our local merchants. Concert band receives $5K The Chatham Voice
Orchestra London in Chatham-Kent is turning over its baton and $5,000 to the Chatham Concert Band to carry on the legacy of band and orchestral music in the community. Despite rain and humidity, the Chatham Concert Band (CCB) kicked off its free summer series at the Kiwanis Bandshell in Tecumseh Park last Wednesday night, under the director of Bandmaster Vaughn Pugh. At the concert, Mary Douglas, president of Orchestra London, presented an endowment cheque of $5,000 to Pugh as part
of wrapping up OL in Chatham. “They continue to provide band and orchestral music in the community and that’s why we chose them,” Douglas said of the decision to donate the money to CCB. Organized in 1927, the CCB has been providing free entertainment to the community for years, and in 2002, celebrated 75 years of continuous operation. The band will play in Tecumseh Park all summer long on Wednesday nights at 7 p.m., with a different theme each week. Feewill offerings are appreciated.

It’s not exactly the red carpet treatment, but people with accessibility issues may very well tell you it’s better. This is the Moby Mat, which extends from the parking lot at the beach in Erieau well out onto the beach, allowing people even in wheelchairs access well out onto the sand, an impossibility in normal conditions.
