Casino to bring 200 new jobs By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com
The casino slated to open in Chatham and replace the Slots at Dresden Raceway will bring about 200 new jobs to the area, according to its owners. Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Ltd. personnel said the company will invest about $36 million into the Richmond Street Venture, and will bring every staff member from the Dresden facility over to the new one when it opens sometime in the middle of next year. Tony Santo, president of Gateway Casinos, said what will be erected at the Richmond Street site, at the corner of Keil Drive, is a Cascades Casino, which will feature more than 330 slot machines and will also have 10 table games. The facility will also be home to two restaurants. It’s the first Cascades to be built in the province. “This is the first of many to be rolled out in Ontario. It will feature a sports pub – Match Eatery & Public House – which is designed to appeal to the ladies,” Santo said.

“We plan on building The Buffet as well. A buffet is really part of the gaming business.” The restaurants will be family accessible, he added. The gaming tables will include blackjack, roulette and possibly a craps table, Santo said. He said, subject to necessary approvals and completion of the land acquisition, Gateway hopes to break ground on the property, which is located beside the Holiday Inn Express and the John D. Bradley Convention Centre, this summer with hopeful completion in mid-2019. Gail Hundt, president at CEO of the Chatham-Kent Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the news. “Economically, this will have the potential for many positive aspects for Chatham-Kent, including increase in employment, increase of tourists and guests to Chatham-Kent, increased exposure of our municipal assets for further opportunity, and increased general revenues for the municipality,” she said in a release.

Chatham-Kent receives between $800,000 and $900,000 annually from the Dresden Slots operation. Damien De Roux, general manager of the Gateway’s Dresden location, confirmed the plan is to bring existing staff to the new facility. “These are wonderful employees. I’m really happy these employees will be coming with us to the new casino,” he said. Approximately 100 full and part time employees work at the Dresden Slots. De Roux said while Gateway is taking its facility out of Dresden, it isn’t abandoning the Dresden Agricultural Society, which runs the track and partnered with the slot floor. “Gateway is committed to supporting local racing. The opportunity that Chatham offers is significant,” he said. “Community commitment is a focus for Gateway. We will help support local priorities through Gateway Gives.” Santo said Gateway would also sponsor some of the harness race events in Dresden as well. Santo thanked the customers of the Dresden location for all the support they’ve shown over the years. “Hopefully they will find this new facility even better,” he said. Positives, negatives The prospect of 200 new jobs and $36 million in new investment for Chatham-Kent are very good reasons for the municipality to work closely with Gateway Casinos to get the new facility going ASAP in Chatham. After all, the Cascades Casino, set to go up at the corner of Richmond Street and Keil Drive, neighbouring the Holiday Inn Express and the John D. Bradley Convention Centre, creates an entertainment hub of sorts. One that is pretty easy to access from Highway 401 for out-of-town visitors. But equally if not more important is the fact Gateway plans on bringing its entire compliment of about 100 employees from its current Dresden location to the new facility, and will remain committed to supporting the Dresden Agricultural Society. The Society runs the harness racing at the raceway in the North Kent community, to which the current gaming room is attached. Critics say Chatham is gaining while an outlying community is losing, but the reality is we all stand to gain from the added employment and tourism. But one can also wonder how many jobs the new facility could cost other businesses. With the expansion to more than 330 slot machines, and the addition of 10 gaming tables, Gateway anticipates more traffic to its facility. And that’s before you factor in the two restaurants that will be on site. Gateway president Tony Santo said the draw radius for a typical Cascades casino is only about 30 kilometres. That’s basically inside Chatham-Kent, so the company expects most of its traffic will be comprised of local citizens. There are only so many local entertainment dollars to go around. As Cascades eats up more, that means less will be spent elsewhere. Yes, the casino will draw some people from outside our municipality. It will be a shiny, new centre of fun. But will people come from Windsor to check it out when Caesar’s is ensconced on that city’s waterfront? Debatable. We could get traffic from the east, especially as London council continues to drag its feet when dealing with Gateway’s proposals for the Forest City. But eventually, that should all get sorted out. One can hope the initial out-of-town curiosity draw is so strong that people keep coming back. Considering its near-perfect location, that remains a possibility. The positives have to outweigh the negatives.

Bus service needs improvements Sir: On a typical damp, cold spring day, when many of us need to go out shopping, the rain is a problem as there is hardly any place to shelter. In a continuously growing town/city, it has taken years for basic changes that could be easer, however for transit riders, it’s always wait and see, last on the agenda for improvements. The main terminal is basically an eyesore you could hardly call a place for waiting for the bus. You get rained on and it’s badly in need of a facelift or makeover. Truthfully, we need a better place to call a terminal, but when will this happen? It’s all pending. Shelters, sure there are a few, however, if you
must depend on the bus for your mode of transportation, it seems realistic only if there is no rain with nowhere to shelter. Sadly, inclement weather means cancelling your appointments or taking another mode of transportation. Most people can’t do this, but this is the reality. The size of buses is an issue. Most time some buses have no room to sit, and so the topic of safety is a factor. Why do we have such small buses in the city? Time constraint; buses only run 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Are there changes in the works? Most stores close at 9 p.m. and if you are across town, you can’t
get home. Only if you drive or have someone to give you a ride. How do the rest of us get home; call a cab? It’s great to hear all the improvements coming to the city, however, it will exclude many who do not drive, so hopefully these are some ideas for the future plans. The tiny bus signs that are not visible to most people don’t even represent the present transit company and could be a bit bolder with a larger font. Most routes need reviewing as the practicality or usage is not suitable to most riders. Here is an example: Travelling from St. Clair Street and
needing to go to Food Basics, Shoppers, the post office, bank or other stores in that plaza. It’s planned that I need to go downtown and return to said plaza or get off and walk from the street over (Victoria Avenue) with half an hour to return! If you have no need to use the bus, it’s hard to understand the plight of riders who need the service. It’s a service to prevent isolation and a necessary service for a city to provide. The IPM 2018 Beautification Committee is preparing to welcome tens of thousands of visitors to Chatham-Kent for the International Plowing Match and Rural Expo 2018 in Pain Court September 18-22. The theme for this year’s beautification effort is Machines and Marigolds. How can residents and businesses participate?
Committee chair Linda Henderson said residents can consider planting and displaying yellow marigolds with farming equipment to decorate yards throughout Chatham-Kent. Henderson said planning sessions are already underway. To find out exactly how your family and/or business/organization can help beautify Chatham-Kent for the IPM, the next information meeting is being
held April 5 at 1 p.m. at the Park Avenue Business Centre in Chatham. “Our vision is to showcase Chatham-Kent, attract visitors and have them want to return,” Henderson said. She encourages residents and businesses to use the lime-green and blue Chatham-Kent colours. These are also the colours of the IPM. “The official flower is the Bonanza Yellow French Marigold, which

This may or may not be a deciding factor on whether this is an option for you. Whichever way works best for you, pre-planning with your REALTOR® is the best way to navigate this process.

“Who will speak for you if you can’t speak for yourself?” It may be one of the most difficult discussions you will have with your family, but it is one of the most important, according to the organizers behind National Advance Care Plan-
ning Day April 16. Michelle O’Rourke, recently retired from the position as Integrated Program Co-ordinator for the Chatham-Kent Hospice and the CKHA Palliative Care and Oncology Departments; and Vivianne De Witte, recently retired as the Integrated Clinical Coordinator for the Chatham-Kent Hospice and

the CKHA Palliative Care and Oncology Departments, are sharing their knowledge of this topic at two seminars next week. The duo will explain what advance-care planning is and will have free materials there for people to take with them so that they can begin to look at their own planning and speak to their loved ones and health care providers about their wishes and what’s important to them. The seminars, April 12 at 6:30 p.m. and April 14 at 10 a.m., are sponsored by the Erie St. Clair LHIN and will be held at the Active Lifestyle Centre on Merritt Avenue in Chatham. “People think they always have time to have these conversations but we need to have these conversations when we’re well and we’re not in a medical crisis,” O’Rourke noted. After working in the ER department for 30 years, she often had to ask family if they knew their loved ones wishes, and too many times, the answer was no. O’Rourke said Advance Care Planning is a process of reflection and communication and really about being proactive. It is a time for you to reflect on your values and wishes, and to let people know what kind of health and personal care you would want in the future if you were unable to speak for yourself. She said it means having discussions with family and friends, especially your Substitute Decision Maker – the person who
will speak for you if you cannot speak for yourself. It may also include writing down your wishes and talking with healthcare providers and financial or legal professionals. “Having this conversation, it helps with anxiety in the family because you never know if something is going to happen and we won’t be able to speak for ourselves – a car accident or a stroke – that’s why it’s important for people of any age, not just older people or people who have cancer or people who are dying,” O’Rourke noted. It’s also about a change in culture, the former hospice program co-ordinator said. It’s helping people not to be afraid to talk about death and dying, and to talk about what’s important. Advance care planning doesn’t require decisions to be made right now, but to make sure your loved ones know what is important to you if you can’t speak for yourself. Rules in Ontario are different under the Ontario Health Care Consent Act, according to O’Rourke, who said it ensures there is a hierarchy of people who will speak for you if you can’t speak for yourself, and ranges from spouse to children to siblings. “If you have four kids but you only want the oldest daughter to speak for you because the others don’t agree with your wishes, you have to name that person as your Power of Attorney.”

Through a partnership established by Professor Brenda Huff, the two students will have an opportunity to complete an international placement. Huff said, “This is such a great opportunity for Chatham students in the ECE program.” The students will be at King Sun school in China. They leave April 5 for six weeks.

Consent has to come from a person, so as a nurse or physician in a hospital, if

A weekend of feeling ‘bleh’ As I type this, I’m recovering from an illness I wouldn’t wish on anyone ... well no friends or even neutral parties at least. I woke up last Thursday chilled. It was about 6:30 a.m., and normally by this time, I’m a bit warm in our bed. My wife and I seem to give off a fair bit of combined heat (I’ve always been like that, and she used to put her cold feed up against me for warmth). But this time around, I was cold to the point I had to get out of bed. Prior to a nice, hot shower, I noticed a red rash on my right bum cheek (did my wife spank me in my sleep? Nah.). Since my right hip is the one that I had surgically replaced. I was a wee bit worried. After the shower, I felt a little better, but that didn’t last. I got our teen to school and then headed to

What is the Feast of Divine Mercy? The Feast of Divine Mercy is celebrated every year on the Sunday after Easter. It's on April 8 this year.
What's so special about it? Jesus spoke to St. Faustina: The soul that will go to confession and receive Holy Communion (on Divine Mercy Sunday) shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment; on that day all the divine floodgates through which grace flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet" (Diary, 699). (Confession need not be on the actual day of Divine Mercy, but should be within 20 days of it). To reinforce this great gift from Jesus, Pope St. John Paul II granted a plenary indulgence under the usual conditions to the faithful who take part in the prayers and devotions held in honour of Divine Mercy, or who, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus (e.g., “Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!”)
What's a plenary indulgence and why should I care? As Catholics, we believe that after death your soul goes to 1 of 3 places: Heaven, Hell or Purgatory. Purgatory is a place of suffering for purification and atonement for sins committed here on Earth. This purification is necessary before your soul can enter Heaven. A plenary indulgence is the total forgiveness of all sins and punishment in Purgatory. What this means is that if you were to die immediately after completing the requirements for the indulgence (i.e., before any further sins could be committed) your soul would go straight to Heaven. As stated above, the Divine Mercy promise was made to St. Faustina and was further reinforced by Pope St. John Paul II.
What are the "usual conditions"? The usual conditions for a plenary indulgence are Eucharistic Communion, Sacramental Confession, total detachment from all sin (even venial), and prayers for the Pope.
What does all this mean to me? This means that no matter what or how many or how terrible your sins are, if you: 1. go to Mass on Divine Mercy Sunday and receive Communion (you must not be in the state of mortal sin when receiving communion; if you are you must go to Confession first) and recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to Jesus (e.g., “Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!”) 2. go to Confession within 20 days (being truly repentant of your sins) 3. say some prayers for the Pope 4. have a complete detachment from all sin your soul will be wiped clean from all sins, and you would not have to spend any time in Purgatory (unless other sins were committed after the indulgence was gained, of course). It is essentially another Baptism. This is why it is so important to make a point of celebrating Divine Mercy Sunday. Your very soul may depend on it. Mass Times:

Obituary MYSLIK: Frank John A lifelong resident of Howard Township, Frank Myslik passed away at the Chatham Kent Health Alliance, Chatham Campus with his family at his side on Sunday, April 1, 2018 at the age of 77. Born at the home farm in Morpeth, Frank was the son of the late Joseph and Lillian (Kotek) Myslik. Beloved husband of 33 years to Bonnie (nee Rivard). Loving father of Dr. Frank E. Myslik of London and Paul R. Myslik of Morpeth. Dear brother to Bob Myslik (Sharon) of Guelph, Jim Myslik (Vicki) of Guelph and Cindy Boyd (Lindsay) of Blenheim. Brother in law Patrick Rivard (Mary) and Michael Rivard (Connie). Dear uncle to Kerri Bertoli (Paul), Sean Myslik (Nancy), Amanda Myslik, Jamie Myslik, Ryan Boyd (Lisa), Dr. Brendan Boyd (Kaitlyn), Connor Boyd, Mark Rivard, Matthew Rivard (Emily) and Elaine Labadie (Matthew). Frank was a beef and cash crop farmer in Howard Township all of his life. He was an active member of the Kent Cloverleaf Conservation Club, the East Kent Vintage Equipment Club and the 4 H Beef Club. He was an award winning trap shooter and an avid hunter and fisherman. As per Frank’s wishes, cremation has taken place with a private family interment to be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Blenheim at a later date. Donations made in memory of Frank to the Foundation of the Chatham Kent Health Alliance or Kent Cloverleaf Conservation Club: ‘Young Bucks Program’ would be appreciated. Support for Hospice Kitchen Program The Chatham Voice
The Howard Mutual Foundation recently gave the Chatham-Kent Hospice Foundation a grant for $7,500 to support the Hospice Kitchen Program. The program, run mainly by volunteers, provides homemade meals for the residents, and soups, baked goods and snacks for hospice family members and guests. Local pharmacy donates to Children’s Treatment Centre The Chatham Voice
Members from Rexall gathered recently at the Children’s Treatment Centre to present a cheque for $5,000 in support of the Butterfly Building Campaign. The demand for specialized therapy for children and youth with special needs is growing in Chatham-Kent, with one in nine CK children accessing the CTC-CK for physiotherapy, speech therapy, audiology, adapted recreation, music therapy, social work, occupational
therapy, autism services, and respite. The Butterfly Building Campaign will support building a larger, state-of-the-art facility that will better accommodate the growing caseload. This is the second significant donation the CTC-CK has received from the Rexall Foundation, who focuses their giving on enhancing the health and well-being of Canadian communities. The Rexall Foundation’s $5,000 is earmarked to support the new building’s Adapted Recreation program.
