Feds provide flood-prevention funding to C-K The Chatham Voice
The federal government pledged support recently to help reduce the impact of flooding in Chatham-Kent, to the tune of $16.5 million. According to the Trudeau government, communities need help adapting to the frequent and intensifying weather events caused by climate change. Reducing the impact of natural disasters such as flooding is critical to keeping Canadian families safe, protecting local businesses and supporting a strong economy. Marco Mendicino, Parliamentary Secretary to the François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Com-
munities, and C-K Mayor Darrin Canniff last week announced funding for a major flooding mitigation project in the Municipality of Chatham-Kent that will make communities in the surrounding area better protected against natural disasters. The project involves reinforcing shorelines on the Thames River, Sydenham River and McGregor Creek, and ensuring that local essential services have the increased capacity needed to manage extreme weather events. The Sixth Street Dam will also be replaced in order to reduce potential flooding and ice jams from the nearby rivers. “High water levels during the last two years have tested our flood

control measures to their capacity and beyond. The extensive work needed to protect residents and property along the Thames and Sydenham rivers would present an enormous burden on local taxpayers,” Canniff said in a news release. “We are extremely grateful that the federal government is aware of the issue and, more importantly, has stepped forward in partnership to help.” Increasing the capacity to handle storms could reduce property damage and provide more than 56,000 residents with a safer and healthier community for years to come. The Government of Canada is investing over $16.5 million to this project through the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund, with the Municipality of Chatham-Kent providing the remainder. “Preparing our communities by taking important steps to adapt to climate change is essential in reducing the devastating impacts of natural disasters on Ontario families and businesses, Mendicino said.

Project raises cash, promotes giving spirit
Two Grade 8 students at St. Vincent Catholic School in Chatham have taken their Kingdom Assignment to a new level thanks to the generosity of two local businesses who helped them bring their idea to life. Zinedine Machado and Luca Mastroianni were given $25, along with all the Grade 8 students, to complete a Kingdom Assignment based on a parable in the Bible of the talents (Matthew 25: 14-31). The two rules were that it was God’s money and it had to be spent outside of school. “We are asked to look carefully at the value of $25 and critically think about the best way to spend the money to help make a difference in the lives of others. We decided to make custom mini hockey sticks and sell them,” the two boys said in a statement.
The mini hockey sticks were on sale for $20 each and could be customized with a team colour, number and last name, and Brian Machado, dad of Zinedine and owner of the Chatham Breakfast House and Grill, said the 60 sticks made took three hours thanks to Laird Vander Ende, owner of LP Wood in Chatham. Vander Ende donated the wood, machinery and his time to help the boys and Brian make the mini sticks, and Mark Phelan of Magnum Signs donated the custom decal work for each stick. Zinedine’s mom, Christina Machado, said the boys sold out all the sticks they had left to sell at the Kent Minor Hockey Association Day of Champs held recently, thanks to Dave Lambert, VP of House League and Patrick Tryon, Sponsorship Director, who allowed them to set up at the event. C-K can apply for $3.6M in funding

lic transit projects outside the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), part of a $30-billion federal-provincial-municipal cost-shared infrastructure investment. Mayor Darrin Canniff said the municipality can’t simply put out its hands and let the province rain down cash. “It is going to be for transportation. We have to figure out exactly what. Regardless, it’s great
news when we get unexpected money from the province,” he said. “We will make very good use of it in Chatham-Kent. We need to assess and determine the best use of it.” The application process opened this week. Canniff said C-K has eight weeks to apply for the funding. But having $3.6 million dangled in front of the municipality and accessing it are two different

matters. “Basically, it’s our money and we have to indicate what we’d like to use it for,” Canniff said. “It is for ‘commuter friendly’ projects. What does that define and what’s the best use? We’re still absorbing that.” Improving transit is the key, Nicholls said. “Transit is one of the biggest issues I encounter in Chatham-Kent Leamington. Jobs in greenhouses, refineries, and farms are growing but if people living in town can’t get to the worksite then the good news doesn’t help them or their family,” said Nicholls in a media release. “Good transit is key to our growth, and even if you don’t use it, the decrease in conges-
tion helps you on your own commute.” Monte McNaughton, Minister of Infrastructure, and MPP for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex, said the province wants to see municipalities improve their public transit. “Our communities count on commuter infrastructure to get people to work and home again to their families,” McNaughton said in a release. ”Our government’s investment will make public transit infrastructure better, safer, and more accessible.” Canniff said there is a review of transportation and transit underway in Chatham-Kent. “We have a committee set up and they may have some wonderful ideas,” he said.

CKHA has plan to cut hip/knee wait times
By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com
Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) officials hope some RAC time will reduce wait times for citizens waiting for hip and knee replacements. Lisa Northcott, head of nursing for the alliance, said Rapid Access Clinics (RACs) will start this month in the hospital. These clinics will help specifically with knee and hip issues. “When a patient complains about pain in the knee or hip to their primary care provider, they used to be referred directly to an orthopedic specialist. Sometimes, they’d wait months to see that specialist,” she said. “Their primary care provider will now be referring them to a RAC.” In that manner, Northcott said a patient should be seen in two weeks or less by a physiotherapist to assess that patient’s situation. “They’ll provide patients with an individual care plan. That could include a referral to a surgeon, or an exercise program to help the patient remain active.” That diversion to exer-
cise or even physiotherapy is the main reason behind the RACs. Northcott said upwards of 40 per cent of patients complaining about knee or hip pain don’t need a joint replacement. But they are taking up a great deal of an orthopedic surgeon’s time. “If we can pull those people out of the queue for orthopedic specialists, we’ll be able to reduce wait times for those who need it,” she said.

A woman died from her injuries suffered Sunday afternoon when her vehicle got hit by a VIA Rail train in Chatham. Police say the crash took place shortly after 2:30 p.m. on Keil Drive just north of Park Avenue West. Early investigation has revealed the woman, who was heading south on Keil, crossed the tracks and was hit by an eastbound VIA train. The first officers on the scene
pulled the woman from her vehicle and began CPR. The 54-year-old woman was rushed to hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries. Police say they will not be releasing the identity of the woman out of respect for her family. The Traffic Unit has taken over the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Const. Open and improving Forgive us if we still pinch ourselves when dealing with the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance. When the province appointed a supervisor for the CHKA several years ago, Rob Devitt, he wanted to meet with the media to be open an honest on developments at the alliance. After years of seeing the alliance – and other hospitals for that matter – refuse to share information and squirrel away information, ostensibly for privacy reasons, but instead just because they weren’t compelled to tell the public, the concept of such openness was so foreign that the local media attended these CKHA press conferences expecting more smoke and mirrors. There has been little smoke. If anything, Devitt, and now CKHA CEO and president Lori Marshall and board chair Greg Aarssens have used a magnifying glass instead. Good or bad, they’ll discuss matters. After having a health alliance that forever seemed unable to run a balanced budget, and had staff that hated working there, it is heartening to see the board and administration operate in a more fiscally responsible manner rather than expecting the province to bail them out of the red, or resorting to borrowing money. Further, it puts patient care and safety at the forefront, and seeks to raise staff satisfaction and trust levels. The starting point was pretty low, but the improvements are tangible. The fiscal situation has improved greatly, to the point the alliance has posted three straight balanced-or-better fiscal years. It is able to reinvest money into important areas of need as a result. That doesn’t mean everything is coming up roses at the alliance. There are still areas for improvement. For example, there was a decline in performance of the reconciliation of patient medications before they are discharged. It dropped midway through last year. Administration said it’s due to the heavy manual review effort needed and is looking at ways to improve the process. The new regime is not perfect. But it does tend to report its imperfections, as well as its successes. It has made improvements in many areas and it is hoped reduced wait times for hip and knee replacements will soon follow. We have some of the best orthopedic surgeons in the province. If we can get patients to see them in a timelier manner, that’s another huge win for the alliance.

Opinion
Unexpected non-profit cost Sir: LaSertoma was chartered in Thamesville on June 4, 1977 as a non-profit club with an agenda of helping youth. We got a postal box in Thamesville to receive letters from organizations. In the mailbox was a renewal, and I went in and was informed on a new rule. You must have a clubhouse. Without an address we would have to pay $180 per year. We had a meeting about
the yearly rate and voted to turn in the key and put the money into our programs for children. I felt as a non-profit club we should be exempt for the fee. Groups looking for our help with kids programs can write to us and we would know where to direct the funds to help children in our area. LaSertoma does so much for our children in
Thamesville and surrounding area for us to change our address would be difficult. Our main objective is our youth. Some things we help with yearly are Children’s Treatment Center, needy families, Home By Eight, Halloween Fun Night, Easter Egg Hunt Bike Rodeo, scholarships, donations to the public and Catholic schools for smart boards and tablets for class-
rooms. Also we help with public library reading programs, free swims at area pools, and figure skating for the area. These are just a few things we donate to. If you have info on what we could do to get requests for donations, we would like to hear from you. E-mail me at artkemp65@gmail.com.
Sir: Taxpayers in Chatham-Kent should not be misled by Mayor Darrin Canniff’s comment about the $12 million that it would cost to pay for either a new arena or to renovate two existing arenas as coming out of reserves with the tax impact being zero on ratepayers, reported in another publication recently. Where do you think those reserves came from, Mr. Canniff? Were they pennies from heaven? Did Warren Buffet get generous with Chatham-Kent? Did your dog dig them up?
No! There is only one place that ALL monies in government came from and that is the almighty taxpayer! And those reserves that we citizens trust you, our elected representatives, with, came from the wallets of the hard working citizens of Chatham-Kent. We have paid them in taxes over the past years and they have accumulated into reserves as a result of budget decisions and tax money management (or mismanagement). It’s horribly disingenuous to suggest that these
reserves are “free money.” If these reserves get used for this new arena, then those funds won’t be available to use for the next rainy day or project that will inevitably come along. An unexpected bridge repair, a Bradley Centre or Capitol Theatre shortfall, a flood, a railroad? Further, those reserve funds will naturally need or want to be replaced, and how do you think those reserves get replenished, Mr. Canniff? It’s the Chatham-Kent ratepayers!
Please, Mr. Canniff, don’t burst the bubble for us so early after your election. You seem like a smart guy so don’t treat us peon citizens like dummies. Don’t show us so early in your tenure that you are no different than most other politicians and public servants who treat our tax dollars with such disregard, like they are boundless. Be accountable! Be responsible! Be honest! Is that really too much to ask?

CKHA board quiet on future of LHINs By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com
With changes potentially coming in how the province funds and oversees health care in Ontario, the head of the board for the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance said the board can only worry about issues it can influence. Greg Aarssen, chair of the CKHA board, said the possible collapse of the Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) – the provincial bodies the pre-

But there is little, if anything, the board can do on the matter. “We have a mandate to run the very best hospital facilities we can. We continue to focus on that,” Aarssen said. “Changes are contemplated at the Ministry of Health at political levels. These things have happened for decades. We need to focus on

The Arts/News
Modern take on musical production By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com
As the curtain is about to go up on the Ursuline College Chatham production of “In the Heights,” work is frantically continuing on all facets of the show. During a recent rehearsal, The Chatham Voice had the opportunity to speak with one of the producers, Jim Dunlop, and one of the show’s main performers, Jack Gillis. Both were very enthusiastic when discussing the musical, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the same person who penned the popular “Hamilton.” Dunlop said the days leading up to a performance are always manic, but are ultimately rewarding.
“It’s always absolute chaos (before a performance), and every single time, we sign up again,” he said of the supporting group of teachers. Dunlop added the musical is also challenging, as it ventures into new territory for performers and producers alike. “It’s a bit scary working with this musical. It’s infused with hip-hop, Latin salsa, pop music and Broadway ballads,” he said. Miranda’s blend of genres continues to gather attention, as “Hamilton,” which focuses on one of the United States’ founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton, also is delivered with rap, hip-hop and pop music. For “In the Heights” the setting is Washington Heights in New York City. Gillis is a UCC performance
veteran. The Grade 12 student has done “The Wizard of Oz” and “Annie” in previous years, and is playing Usnavi for “In the Heights.” He said this year’s effort is fresh. “It is a musical, but it’s really unique and modern. It’s a lot of fun,” he said. “There’s a lot of upbeat music and a lot of singing and dancing.” It’s also the most challenging to date for Gillis. “I wouldn’t have considered myself much of a singer or dancer before (doing UCC productions). I’ve learned a lot, but it is hard and this is definitely a challenge,” he said. “There is more singing and dancing. And with the rapping, that adds more words to memorize.” The backdrop for “In the Heights” is sure to draw the eyes of the audience. Extending into the rafters of the

theatre, the faux buildings are done in great detail, complete with fire escapes and businesses occupying the bottom floors. Set building has been underway since the beginning of the year, Dunlop said. “We’re trying to make it look like a real location and not just a wooden set on a high school stage,” he said.
Teachers, students, parents and volunteers have been busy painting the set. Evening performances for the general public begin on April 10 and run through April 13, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Ursuline College Theatre. Tickets are $20 and are available at the UCC Box Office, or by calling 519-351-2987.
No measles case in C-K The Chatham Voice
Days after stating there was a “probable measles” case in Chatham-Kent, with several very public points of possible exposure, the Public Health Unit now says it wasn’t the
measles. Health unit officials said there is no risk to the community at this time. They add they took a very precautionary approach because the clinical history reported to the Health Unit was
very convincing for measles; there was reason to believe that the index case could have been in contact with a large number of susceptible people; and there is a limited timeframe to immunize contacts to prevent measles.

What is this Study about? The Third Street Bridge crosses the Thames River in the community of Chatham. It was constructed in 1961 and since then has undergone several repairs, with the last repair in 2004. In 2018, a Detailed Condition Assessment and Load Limit Evaluation was completed to assess the structural condition of the bridge. As a result of the existing condition of the bridge, the Municipality of Chatham-Kent is undertaking a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) to evaluate the rehabilitation or replacement options for the bridge. How is this Study being completed? Given the age, repair needs and structural capacity limitations of the structure, the Study is intended to satisfy Schedule C requirements in accordance with the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Process, an approved process under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act. The study will include: • Review of background information to confirm the need for the rehabilitation or replacement of the bridge • An inventory of the engineering and environmental conditions • Development and evaluation of alternative design options to implement the improvements • A comparative evaluation of the design options and recommendation of a preferred option • Documentation of the process in an Environmental Study Report made available for a 30-day review period How can I participate in this Study? Two Public Information Centers (PICs) will be held in 2019 to present the goals and objectives, review the findings and discuss issues including alternative solutions, environmental impacts and mitigation measures. A subsequent notice will include the date, time and location of the PICs. Information will be collected throughout the study and will be used in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. All comments received throughout the study will become part of the public record and will be included in the documentation. Rivera supports Habitat approach The Chatham Voice
As Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent puts plans in place to start its 2019 build, which represents the sixth home built for the organization, it has received a $10,000 boost to their program. The local affiliate received a $10,000 grant from Revera Retirement Living to support their work in the community. The national partnership has Revera locations working with Habitat
affiliates across Canada. The Revera location in Chatham, Revera Chatham Retirement Resort, has been partnering with Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent for over a year now through various fundraisers and events. Along with supporting Habitat’s trivia nights and golf tournament, Revera hosted a Shania Twain tribute concert, raising funds to help Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent. “Our partnership with
Revera Retirement Living is a fairly new one that we have enjoyed developing over the last year or so. We are looking forward to the possibility of having some of the Revera team members work with us on our Woods Street build in Chatham this summer,” said Nancy McDowell, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent, in a media release. “Revera is proud to partner with Habitat for Humanity, not just locally
with the Chatham-Kent location, but also on a national basis” said Doug Hay, Executive Director of Revera Chatham Retirement Resort. “Revera offers your kind of place for retirement living, serves your kind of cuisine, and offers your kind of recreation and wellness. Habitat for Humanity is our natural partner in serving communities across Canada.” Habitat for Humanity is committed to the community by not only building
homes that are sold to qualifying low-income families, but they also run the ReStore which receives donations of new and gently used furniture, appliances and building materials that are sold to the public at up to 75 per cent off the retail price. Habitat relies on the generosity of the community through their donations
as well as through volunteering the many hours required to run the ReStore and build programs. Habitat is currently looking for support for their 2019 build in Chatham. If you wish to become involved in either the build or the ReStore through volunteering or donating, you can contact the organization at 519-352-4440.

Life
Burger creations a treat for tastebuds We ate some of the best burgers ever on Sunday, and I had nothing to do with them, except for the dishes afterwards. Yes, I bet they’d have been even better on the Big Green Egg, but Mary Beth offered to do them on a cast iron griddle inside. Who was I to argue on a cold, windy day? Most of the credit goes to our daughter, Brenna, who found the recipe online. I must mention that although I love cooking and creating a variety of dishes on the barbecue, most of the burgers we’ve done have been packaged pre-made offerings. Some have been quite tasty, like the ones you can get from Schinkels’ or Lenovers, while others have simply filled us up. Brenna’s finding will be repeated again and
Bruce Corcoran again. Naturally, you need ground beef. And these were all killer, no filler, as Mary Beth didn’t use any breadcrumbs or eggs. If you go that route, I’d recommend ensuring you use a griddle or pan over an open grill, in case anything thinks about falling apart. The stuffing was a mix of cream cheese, cheddar cheese, bacon and chopped jalapenos. And we added more cheese on top, because, why not? The burgers essentially melted in our mouths!
We combined them with a salad and some cooked asparagus for a wonderful meal. Brenna’s boyfriend Matt had the intention of eating a second burger, but reconsidered. He managed to get a second patty into him, but no bun. Ah, teenagers. Finn is a con-cat
them over with his purrs. Next door, Cathy will feed him right out of her hand. He’ll also readily accept anything she puts out for her two cats. Across the street, Finn will hop onto the window ledge at Lynn and Doug’s and make goo-goo eyes with their cat through the window. That often leads to a little food treat as well. And I’ve learned he’s visiting a neighbour’s garage a couple of doors down, hanging out and accepting snacks there too. He’s good at squawking and acting like he’s starving. I fall for it reg-
ularly when he’s in the house and cat-chatting that he’s very hungry and his bowl is empty. Except it usually isn’t empty. He’s just an attention hog. A treat here or a treat there is an added bonus. The thing is, Finn’s a BIG cat. He’ll take over an entire living room chair. On top of that, he’s quite furry, so he looks even larger. He’s not fat, but he’s certainly not skinny or starving. Yet, he manages to work the neighbourhood like he hasn’t been fed in days. Or he’ll just turn up the feline charm and
trade affection for treats. I’ve called Finn many things, including stupid, as he’ll sit out in the rain meowing to get in, but he’s also very, very crafty. He’s a con-cat. Be on the lookout for a large ginger tabby who will readily show love in exchange for food. If he sets the hook once, he’ll be back to reel you in every day. Lynn recently walked over to say what a great cat we have and that she’s been feeding him. Who was walking alongside her? Finn, with a very smug look on his face.
We’ve received a neighbourhood update on our cat’s antics. It seems Finn has more than just our household wrapped around his claw-tips. The not-so-little beggar is well fed at home. We’ve learned he’s also well fed next door, across the street, and down a couple of homes. That’s right, Finn’s so friendly he’ll go right Notice of Planning Act Approval up to neighbours and win Take Notice that on March 25, 2019, Council of the Corporation of the Municipality of Chatham-Kent approved general amendments to the Chatham-Kent Official Plan and Chatham-Kent Zoning By-law No. 216-2009. At the meeting, Council passed: By-law No. 47-2019 to adopt Official Plan Amendment No. 55
The purpose of the Official Plan Amendment is to establish land use policies to support the legal production of cannabis within the following land use designations: Employment Area, Agricultural Area and Rural Industrial. The proposed policies include: • Provisions for the separation of Cannabis Production Facilities from sensitive land uses such as residential, institutional, and open space; • A requirement that construction of new Cannabis Production Facilities be subject to site plan approval, as outlined in the Site Plan Control By-law; • That Cannabis Production Facilities be located and designed in accordance with Federal Regulations to mitigate potential impacts including light emissions, air emissions, odour, and so forth; and, • That only facilities registered or licensed by Heath Canada are permitted. Zoning By-law No. 48-2019 to implement the policy changes implemented by Official Plan Amendment No. 55, including: • Establishing a new definition for “Cannabis Production Facility”, meaning, “any building, structure, or lands licensed by Health Canada to undertake cultivation, processing, sale, analytical testing, and research of cannabis, pursuant to the Cannabis Regulations under the Cannabis Act, or successor legislation”; • Permit Cannabis Production Facilities in the General Industrial (M1), Rural Industrial (MR), and Agricultural (A1) Zones; • Establish the following General Provisions for all Zones; a) The following separation distances shall apply: i. within the General Industrial (M1) Zone no building or structure part of a Cannabis Production Facility can be located closer than 75 m to any residential, institutional or open space Zone boundary; and, ii. within the Agricultural (A1) and Rural Industrial (MR) Zone no building or structure part of a Cannabis Production Facility can be located closer than 100 m to an existing residential dwelling on a separate lot, or to a residential, institutional, open space zone boundary; b) Establish appropriate parking standards; c) Clauses (a) and (b) do not apply to Cannabis Production Facilities where the cultivation area is less than 200 m2, or to any outdoor cultivation areas.
CLEANING WINDOWS JUST
GOT EASIER Nobody likes cleaning windows, but we can help make it a whole lot easier.
Reasons for Approval The background and reasons for the Decisions are incorporated in the Planning report dated March 6, 2019, which was adopted by Council. Three written submissions were received by the Municipal Clerk in advance of the Public Meeting with regard to By-law No. 47-2019 and 48-2019 and were provided to Council for consideration. Two oral submissions were received at the public meeting. All submissions received, have been, on balance, taken into consideration by Council as part of its deliberations and final decision on this matter. In the opinion of Council, the proposed Official Plan Amendment and Zoning By-law Amendments are consistent with the Provincial Policy Statement and the Official Plan.
Luckily with North Star, cleaning your windows is a breeze. Our Single and Double Hung Windows feature tilt-in sashes for safe and easy cleaning from inside your home. The perfect solution so cleaning doesn’t become a chore.

A friendly reminder to all residents: Please Do Not Plant in Municipal Right-of-Ways As we get closer to planting season, the Chatham-Kent Road Authority would like to remind residents to ensure that they are not planting vegetation in municipal right of ways. As plant life grows taller and fuller throughout the season, it can obstruct visibility as motorists approach intersections. Planting on municipal right of ways close to the roadside ditches can also cause drainage and erosion problems. The Municipality will not be held responsible for damage or loss to vegetation planted on a municipal right of way. If you are unsure whether you are encroaching on the municipal right-of-way, please call 519.360.1998, and staff will provide you with accurate property lines. Mud on Roadways We are also reminding motorists to drive carefully on roads across the Municipality, taking extra care where there is mud on the roads. Under the Highway Traffic Act, farmers and contractors have a legal obligation to ensure their vehicles are cleared of any mud or debris before entering the public highway. However, excess mud can be a danger to cars, motorbikes and cyclists, particularly in wet conditions like we’ve had recently, changing the way a vehicle handles, potentially causing skidding.

A Job for Professionals
March 29, 2019 was one of the saddest days of my life. I had to say goodbye to my most loved Siamese companion at The SOUTH RIDGE VET CLINIC. I always knew this day would arrive and I could never prevent it from happening. For almost a month prior I saw it coming. In her final 2 weeks LUCY had stopped eating and drinking and NEVER ONCE cried out or complained. LUCY knew she was dying. I always thought there was something I could do to ease her transition into the afterlife. All I could do was to hold her and weep, talking to her and she never once said a word to me. She was silent and for a SIAMESE cat to be silent was indeed a sign that she knew she was dying. My daughter Jennifer faithfully helped me to be strong and endure this dilemma. LUCY was the most loved, talkative and most lovable SIAMESE girl ever. If you ever saw her coming towards you she would be strutting like a model…you knew beyond a doubt she was special. Over the course of many years I always sneezed in the morning and she would chatter, and I would say “I’m sorry” and she would chatter back at me. Then, I would say “I won’t do it again” and she would chatter back at me. At the beginning of her life SHE WAS MY WIFE JUDY’S little girl until JUDY passed away in 2013. She became my little girl until the ominous day of March 29, 2019. I would never deny my periods of sadness and grief right up to her entering the afterlife. There seemed to be a gentle period of solitude and peace. Even when our VET (DR. AMANDA) gracefully injected her with a sedative while she patiently went to sleep on my lap. This was definitely her final moments of life. I will always believe she was entering a place so special where there is a special HEAVEN where she will connect with my wife who was waiting for her. LUCY will always be reverently remembered as part of our family. I miss her tremendously. I do not know how I can survive this painful process but it will take time with all the beautiful memories of a wonderful SIAMESE member of our family.

Resources for cancer patients and their loved ones
Each year, the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) recognizes April as Daffodil Month. This annual campaign raises funds to support cancer research and treatments for the hundreds of thousands of Canadians living with the disease. When facing cancer, it’s all too easy to feel hopeless and alone. That’s why the CCS has created two free, confidential hotlines to let you connect with people who have the information and experience to support you through difficult times. INFORMATION SERVICE The CCS Cancer Information Service is a nationwide, toll-free service available to cancer patients, caregivers, health-care professionals and the general public. Experts provide information about cancer treatments and their side effects, clinical trials, emotional support services, prevention methods and
complementary therapies. The service is available Monday through Friday, in English and French at 1-888-939-3333. For service in other languages, interpreters can be accessed. PEER MATCH PROGRAM If you’d like to talk to a cancer survivor or someone who’s cared for a cancer patient in the past, the peer match program is a confidential, phone-based service that lets you speak one-on-one with a trained volunteer who’s gone through a similar experience. These volunteers are available to listen, offer support and share ideas for coping. To register, go to match.cancer.ca. Visit the CCS website (cancer.ca) to learn more about resources for cancer patients and what you can do to help during Daffodil Month.
