Top doc encourages ‘health literacy’ By Pam Wright Local Journalism Initiative pamwrightlji@gmail.com

ee r Fmenu

New Year’s wishes and resolutions are nice – but action is better. That’s the word from Dr. Shanker Nesathurai, Chatham-Kent’s Acting Medical Officer of Health. As part of his message for the start of 2024, the physician has words of encouragement for the public – particularly to the 27,000 young people who call Chatham-Kent home. “We want to give young people health literacy,” Nesathurai told The Voice in a recent interview. “Health is more than the absence of illness. We want young people to evaluate that and offer them the education and tools to empower them to make good choices.” According to Nesathurai, society is still recovering from the detrimental effects wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic. “The pandemic disrupt-

ed the lives of every family,” he said, as well as every institution. “It changed the way we see the world,” Nesathurai emphasized, noting school closures affected the normal development of children and youth, especially in the area of socialization. Not being able to engage socially had some adverse impacts, Nesathurai said. “We need to be aware of that and recognize it as a challenge.” Nesathurai has a number of suggestions for youth and the general public to embrace healthy living, including getting vaccinations, as well as adopting a healthy lifestyle through health literacy. “Health literacy helps young people enter adulthood with the best possible tools,” Nesathurai stated. He also said that it is up to the entire community to nurture health by creating physical environments that promote healthy lifestyle and influence good choices. “More active lifestyles have better health outcomes,” he said. Family donates $1M to new centre By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com

It’s for the children. To the Myers family, donating $1 million to help build a new Children’s Treatment Centre is that simple. “We believe in kids. We believe in helping out as much as we can in the area,” said Rob Myers, who along with his wife, Cathy, and daughter, Jessica, donated seven figures to the centre’s Butterfly Building Campaign on Friday. “I watch a lot of these parents where they have disabled or handicapped children and I realize my wife and I have been blessed that we didn’t have to deal with that. It’s something a lot of parents deal with.” To date, the Foundation of the Children’s Treatment Centre of Chatham-Kent has now raised $9.5 million. The new facility, when completed, is to have about 55,000 square feet of space at the future McNaughton Avenue West location, more than double the space of the current facility on Lark Street. The centre helps children and youth who are facing physical, developmental and communication challenges. It’s bursting at the seams, said Donna Litwin-Makey, executive director of the centre. “We use our washrooms for offices; we don’t have a staff room as we use it for programs,” she said. Rob Myers, CEO of RM Sotheby’s, said a visit to the Children’s Treatment Centre a number of years ago opened

his eyes to all the good being done at the facility. “The mayor brought me here a few years ago and I got to meet some of the parents and some of the children. We thought, ‘Why not help as much as we can?’ Our family’s fortunate enough to be in a position to be able to do something like this.” Jessica Myers said the treatment centre is an important part of Chatham-Kent. “It means a great deal. One of my children came here for speech therapy. A lot of my friends bring their children here for various reasons. This facility supports one-in-five families,” she said. “It obviously helps a lot of people in a lot of different ways. You can come in and use the pool for rehabilitation, you can take speech therapy, you can get music therapy; there are so many different offerings here. It’s just such a great facility for the community,” she added. The $1-million donation had Litwin-Makey and Mike Genge, president of the centre’s foundation, ecstatic. “This is absolutely incredible,” Genge said. “Rob and Cathy and Jessica have been involved with what we are doing for a while now. We talked about what we were doing and the family came back and said, ‘We want to commit and we want to commit as being the lead donor for this project.’” “The wonder of this is kind of indescribable. The family’s wonderful generosity is just amazing,” Litwin-Makey said, adding the support is

more than just money. “Your commitment brings our confidence level up. It helps us all know how respected and valued our kids are, and our families. That’s a spectacular gift on top of the dollars.” Rob Myers, who admits he’s impatient, wants to see shovels in the ground sooner rather than later, and is optimistic that will be the case. “It looks like this spring they’re going to start building this facility,” he said. Litwin-Makey said they are in the process of finalizing costing and planning. “We are pre-qualifying general contractors right now. The forecast is mid-February to post for a general contractor,” she said. “We’re meeting all of the ministry (of children, community and social services) deadlines, but we have to wait for their OK. As for what date that shovel goes in the ground, I cannot speculate.” She estimated the construction will take about two years and hoped for completion by the end of 2025. The new Children’s Treatment Centre will feature a range of essential amenities, including a dedicated gym, therapy rooms, and an updated pool that will be accessible to both clients and the community. The increased office space will enhance the working environment for staff and provide improved charting capabilities. With another $500,000 in local fundraising needed for the project, Rob Myers said he hoped his family’s donation will help encourage oth-

ers to help push the project to the

911 system upgrades in the works By Pam Wright Local Journalism Initiative pamwrightlji@gmail.com

Thanks to new software incorporating the latest

in GPS mapping, Chatham-Kent is upping its 911 response game. According to a media release from the Chatham-Kent Police Service,

the recently installed system optimizes call management with mapping that identifies and prioritizes calls throughout the municipality. The feature ensures that emergency lines are available for critical situations, preventing tie-ups that could hinder an immediate response from emergency services. The software has been installed as part of the transition to the government-mandated next-generation 911 system. CKPS public information officer Lynette Rosina said the new system allows 911 dispatchers to pinpoint particular incidents, while ensuring unrelated calls are prioritized, meaning no call will go unanswered. Rosina said the system

allows 911 operators to discern when a particular incident is generating significant call volumes and to make sure non-related calls from another geographic location are prioritized. Because dispatchers can select those non-related calls, it allows those calls to be answered in a timely fashion, ensuring that they are not held up in a queue. The new system enables callers to stay on the line and to receive a message assuring them their call will be answered as soon as possible. “It gives dispatchers more control over calls that they take first,” Rosina said, as they are able to see what calls they are referring to in real time. “It allows for better call

management.” When calling the non-emergency line, callers will be transferred to the emergency communications centre with a customized message. If it is an emergency, they are advised to call 911 directly.

The next-generation 911, referred to as NG 911, is being mandated by the Canadian Radio and Television Commission with a 2025 deadline. The upgrade means the new digital system will replace outdated analog systems.

Opinion The CEBA pressure cooker January 18, 2024. Most every small business owner will know the significance of that date. And, as it looks right now, so too will Justin Trudeau and his Liberal government, as that day could very well cost them votes next election. For those who don’t know, Jan. 18 is the day the federal government is calling all Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) loans due. For thousands of small businesses across the country, it will mean an extra $20,000 in debt. The government, in the heart of the Covid pandemic, provided $60,000 in loans to businesses in Canada to help survive the forced closure of businesses. Initially, businesses had until the end of 2022 to pay back $40,000 of the amount to see the other $20,000 forgiven. But many businesses weren’t out from under the heavy yoke of the pandemic burden at that point, so the Trudeau government intelligently pushed the deadline back a year. According to the Canadian Federation of Small Business (CFIB), most small businesses have yet to recover

from two years of on-and-off Covid restrictions. Only half of small firms are back to 2019 levels of sales, and the average business has taken on $100,000 in new debt just to survive. All 13 of the premiers in Canada sided with the CFIB last September to lobby the feds to extend the deadline by another year. That got them about three weeks, as the deadline was pushed to Jan. 18. The CFIB delivered petitions from small business owners, 50,000 strong, to Ottawa, asking for the government to reconsider. Christina Santini, CFIB’s director of national affairs, said the CFIB is still trying. “ We have been pushing hard to get this deadline pushed back to the end of 2024, to no avail,” she said. The plea may be falling on the deaf ears of civil servants, but elected officials may hear the roar come the next election. That’s not a smart move for a minority government that could be going to the polls this year, with the bitter taste of the CEBA loan debacle still fresh in the mouths of small business owners.

Help our homeless Editor: Homelessness is our public concern. One way to tackle the homeless problem is to rent out the motels (pets allowed) available in Chatham and surrounding boroughs. I bet many rooms are empty.

With the help of a government assistance program, they will be fed, showered, and have a clean place to live in. They should be evaluated and enrolled in an

Clean off license plates Editor: Being new in Chatham, I was so surprised, or should I say rather shocked, to see so many vehicles on the road with the license plates almost invisible. They are so rusty or covered with mud hiding

Editor: The current provincial government has offered Chatham-Kent a bonus of $330,000 for already exceeding the province’s building targets by 300 per cent. This before Premier Ford’s latest attempt to undermine Ontario’s municipal governments.

C-K is building homes three times as fast as the province is aiming for. C-K’s total revenues of 2022 were $452,323,000. The bonus would add 0.0007 per cent to C-K revenues, or about $3 per resident. My offer to the provincial gov-

Beattie Foundation donates $50,000 to C-K Hospice The Chatham Voice

Jim and Jack Beattie would be proud. Thanks to their foresight, the brothers have left behind a legacy that continues to assist those in need that includes a recent donation of $50,000 to the Chatham-Kent Hospice. According to a recent hospice media release, James (Jim) and Jack Beattie, formerly of Middlesex County, made their fortune in the crude oil industry. And while they were doing business,

they realized that the elderly in their community were not being properly cared for. After Jack’s death in 1957, the oil fields were sold and the James A Beattie Foundation was born in 1958. Through this foundation, the Beattie Home for the Aged was established and supported for 55 years. It’s now been sold, but still operates as a retirement home. To this day, the James A. Beattie Foundation continues to support seniors, including the C-K Hos-

pice and the Hospice of Elgin, which is currently under construction. It also funds children’s charities across the region. Chatham-Kent Hospice Foundation executive director Jodi Maroney commended the Beattie brothers on their legacy. “This generous donation is the direct result of two brothers who saw a need and met it,” Maroney said. “Not only did they support seniors for many years, but their legacy continues to support families in the area through Chatham-Kent Hospice.

A dementia diagnosis does not mean your life as you know it has stopped. Research shows an early diagnosis with proper intervention can help slow down the progression of dementia. This can help people continue to have full lives for a long time after diagnoses. While the symptoms will get worse over time, there are treatment options and therapies available. Making lifestyle changes that encourage brain health can also help delay the onset of dementia and slow its progression. These include: • Exercising your brain with new cognitive exercises, like learning a new language or instrument. • Protecting your head from injury • Being physically active. • Taking care of your hearing by getting annual evaluations and wearing a hearing aid, if needed. •Quitting smoking and reducing alcohol intake. • Staying socially connected with friends, family and neighbours. • Eating a healthy diet by including fruits, vegetables, whole grains and nuts in your meals. • Visiting your doctor or other healthcare providers regularly. ~ 24 Hour Health Care Supervision ~ Delicious Home Cooked Meals ~ Scheduled Activities

Heading into 2024, the effort is building on the success of its inaugural event last year by launching a new mini-session series dedicated to helping women succeed. Guest speakers, interactive workshops and networking opportunities will be included in the initiative. Chatham-Kent Coun. Allyson Sto-

rey will kick off the SheLeads series on Jan. 11, speaking on the topic of Empowering Women in Politics. The event will be held at at 111 Heritage Rd. in Chatham in Suite 104 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. SheLeads co-founder Randi Bokor Caron said the organization is honoured Storey will share her insight. According to organizers, the SheLeads mini sessions are a direct result of the overwhelming success of the first SheLeads one-day conference held last July. The effort is volunteer driven. C-K Toy Show returns Jan. 21 By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com

The toys are set to return Jan. 21 for the annual Chatham-Kent Toy Show and Sale. The event celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, and organizers expect it to continue to grow. The show, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Bradley Centre, had close to 200 tables of items on display last year. This time around, co-organizer Rob Sterling thinks it could be even bigger. “It was very well received. We had by far our highest attendance last year that we ever had,” he said. “We had over 2,000 people come throughout

the day.” Based on the applications for space from interested vendors, Sterling thinks there will be at least another 200 tables of items on display. Those include farm toys, diecast models, toys to play with and “highly collectible items,” Sterling said. There will also be sports cards, action figures, model planes, cars, trains, ships and coins. “That’s something we really like about the show is we have people who bring in everything from inexpensive play toys all the way up to highly collectible items. This tends to draw a pretty wide audience,” he said. Home Depot will return to offer its workshop area for kids as

well. The show runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for students and free for children aged six and under. “It’s a pretty inexpensive thing to do on what’s often a cold January day,” Sterling said. Proceeds are earmarked for the 4-H Toy

Corcorans ‘enjoy’ Merry Covid-ness Christmas comes but once a year. And for the Corcorans, so too does Covid, or at least that’s how it seems. And they travel together. For the past three Christmas holiday seasons, we have endured Covid. The first time was the worst.

being vaccinated, we got hit with it. It was like a bad case of the flu – fever, aches, chest congestion, runny nose, sore throat... the works. In 2022, it wasn’t as severe. We also had two vaccinations under our belt by that time. And this time around,

for me, it was like a bad cold. In fact, it was so much like a cold that I tested just out of caution for the other Chatham Voice staffers, as I prepared to come to the office Dec. 27. But two little red bars on the tester told me to stay home. I coughed a lot and went A Part of Wallaceburg since 1943.

light one at most. However, as not bad as it was, I am sick of catching this darned virus each year. It’s not like we are inviting the bug into our home. But with one of us working in retail, and all of us wading into stores during the busy December shopping days, one of us caught it somewhere, and shared it with the others. With Covid out of the way, that opens my health-care road to several exciting stops in the near future. Next up is a colonoscopy. I’m due for the camera invasion of by exhaust port, given my age. I’ll likely write about it, but not go into great detail about my entrails, for obvious reasons. But (one T, not two) I do reserve the right to make light of passing gas and dealing with the thermonuclear laxative concoctions I will have to slug back. I think I’ll put the toilet paper in the freezer right now, actually...

through a surprising amount of tissues as I honked on my nose on a regular basis. But that was the worst of it. Well, I did lose my sense of smell and taste for a couple of days, which included New Year’s Eve. Here we were, three Corcorans, huddled up in the house together, doing very little other than playing games together. My daughter, Brenna, put on a nice snack spread for the evening, but I didn’t really taste the garlic bread or the meatballs, or the really thick and garlic-infused tomato soup the day prior. I believe I only periodically had a fever, and a

A resident of Chatham,

Alfred Klinard

peacefully passed away at Riverview Gardens on December 29, 2023 at the age of 94. Born in Susville, France, Alfred was the son of Jan and Franciszka (née Sieprawska) Klinjart. Beloved husband of 73 years to Lucette (née Cottin, 2015). Alfred was the cherished father of Brigitte (Chris) Davis of Chatham, Ontario. Loving Poppee to Jen Merritt (Mark Bisson) and their son Alfred Bisson-Merritt of Guernsey, Drake Merritt (Kaitlin Johnston) and their children Duncan Merritt and Jackson Merritt of Woodstock. Alfred is predeceased by their father Brian Merritt (1991). Alfred is survived by his sister Antoinette Grzebien. Predeceased by siblings Henry, Wanda, and Marion. He will be missed by many nieces, nephews, the Dumay family, neighbours, friends and extended family. Alfred worked at Moczik Tool and Die until his retirement. In his spare time he enjoyed camping with his wife Lucette and especially enjoyed traveling through the US. He was a championship level trap shooter, competing in Ontario and Ohio, and was a longtime member of Dresden Sportsmens Club. Alfred practiced Tai Chi for decades and was the oldest member at the Chatham Tai Chi Club. In his spare time he tended to his vegetable garden. He was an excellent cook and took great pleasure in eating. A special thank you goes to the staff at Riverview Gardens - 5W for all their caring and kindness, and to his physician of many years, Dr. Bailey. As per Alfred’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Donations made in memory of Alfred to the Alzheimer Society of Chatham-Kent or Chatham-Kent Health Alliance would be appreciated by the family.
