The new facility will replace an existing seed-corn processing plant that was acquired in 2019 following the formation of the joint venture between Maizex Seeds and Sollio Agriculture.

It’s a national company producing and selling seeds under the Maizex brand across Canada.

The company also sells forage seeds and cereal varieties in eastern Canada, recently introducing several canola hybrids.

The company points out that Chatham-Kent is unique globally as it has a long frost-free growing season and consistent moisture due to its location in the Great Lakes.

“We are truly fortunate to grow seed corn in one of the best seed-corn production areas in the world,” Ashton said.

“This investment confirms our savoir-faire and expertise, and our desire to support our customers, the profitability of their farms, and our commercial growth for the future.”

Because the problem is so complex it has to be looked at from “A to Z,” Canniff said, including how people get addicted and access the drug supply in the first place.

A lack of treatment facilities for those individuals compounds the problem, he added.

Registration is open for the 2026 Ontario Agricultural Conferences’ three in-person and streamed sessions.

The OagC is partnering again with Planting Knowledge, Growing Prosperity to elevate agricultural knowledge and practices across the province.

Participants can attend in-person sessions at Ridgetown, Waterloo, and Kemptville on separate dates.

Virtual attendees can watch livestreamed sessions from their home computers or mobile devices from the Ridgetown and Waterloo sessions.

The Southwest Agricultural Conference takes place Jan. 6 and 7 at the University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus.

Guests can choose from four consecutive hourly sessions on a va-

riety of topics, or attend a special two-hour sprayer clinic offered twice daily.

Cops pumping up patrols, staff

Following a long period of being understaffed, the Chatham-Kent Police Service is set to return to a full complement of officers in the new year.

In a presentation to C-K council earlier this month, Chief Kirk Earley said the service has hired 65 people in the last 24 months, including four new cadets who will attend Ontario Police College in January. They’re among 36 sworn officers and 29 civilians who have been brought on board.

The report comes in response to a motion from South Kent Coun. Anthony Ceccacci asking for an update on police operations. Ceccacci requested the update as a follow up to a police operations audit by Deloitte in 2023. At the time, the third-party analysis found the service to be “severely understaffed,” recommending CKPS add 43 full-time staff to meet demand.

According to Earley, the new hires are part of a four-year period of transformation and modernization that includes replacing retired officers.

with 36 very solid candidates that are sons and daughters of this community patrolling the streets,” Earley explained, noting the service tested more than 100 candidates. Five of the new officers were hired from other police services.

Earley said retirements – 22 in the last year – and people returning after long-term illness must be considered during the recruitment process – making the actual number a “moving target.

“When we have people return, it makes it difficult to try and recruit, because it may put us over our complement,” the chief explained. “So, it’s kind of a moving target.”

However, he said the CKPS Community Patrol Branch will have 112 sworn officers by March of next year – a division of the service that has struggled to maintain numbers in recent times.

All told, the number of

sworn officers sits at 197, in addition to 100 civilian employees, including emergency communications operators, special constables and other staff.

Earley said the service will continue to recruit and hire.

In 2023, Chatham-Kent council approved budget increases of $2.15 million in 2024; $2.35 million in 2025; $2.85 million in 2026; and $2.9 million in 2027 for a total of $10.3 million over four years.

The CKPS 2023 base budget in 2024 was $36 million and grew to $43.6 million in 2025.

Because the highest rates of local crime relate to break and enters and drugs, Earley said the size of the intelligence unit has been doubled as well. Drug and property seizures took a sizeable jump, going from $800,000 in 2024 to $27 million so far this year.

Earley stressed that more officers are needed as calls are increasing. In

2024, more than 75,000 police calls were dispatched but as of November 2025, police already responded to 76,000 calls.

Besides bringing on more officers, CKPS has seen other personnel changes, including the hiring of a corporate communications professional, a project manager and a wellness co-ordinator.

“We’re looking at improvement in our wellness, community safety and our response time,” Earley told council.

“Thank you to you as council for your support in that. It was a key investment in public safety.”

Earley has promised to increase foot patrols in the Chatham’s core by adding it as a 15th patrol zone in January – similar to the way it was done when he started in policing 29 years ago.

“There has been an influx of people in the downtown core and they are causing issues,” he told council. “From an

evidence-based policing perspective, that (foot patrol) is probably the best way to prevent crime.”

Earley said the addition of wellness and wellbeing co-ordinator Amanda Blackburn has proved to be invaluable and has reduced lost time in the service.

New technologies are also boosting community safety, Earley said, such as the addition of CCTV cameras in urban

areas and the launch of the NG9111 emergency communications centre.

However Earley said technology can only go so far.

“No matter how much technology we have, we still have to have boots on the ground,” he said. “No matter how much technology we put in place, technology will never be able to console a victim.

We need officers to do that.”

Opinion Tough choices

No one likes higher taxes.

However, no one likes crime.

And to combat crime, you need constables on patrol.

In recent years, the Chatham-Kent Police Service has delivered budgets to the municipality with very low increases. They looked good on paper, but not so much on our streets.

Officer numbers slid…to the point three-dozen officers have been brought on board the past few years.

And, as a result, the police service budget has increased to more than $43 million annually.

We’re in a dire situation with the trifecta of hell – homelessness, mental health and addiction. It’s a terrible triangle that is horribly intermeshed.

One can lead to the others and once this sets in, some stuck in the triangle turn to crime to feed their habits.

Break and enters and drug charges are our biggest issues in C-K, by and large, and, as mentioned, they overlap heavily.

The judicial system has done little to deter matters. Defence attorneys know the system and work within it, getting their clients minimum time served. It’s their job; work the system.

However, it doesn’t help an addict. Then again, even if they serve enough time behind bars to get clean, the system supports are not in place to make that happen anyway.

As a result, it falls on police. Visible presence can deter crime. Chief Kirk Earley has vowed to have more police walking beats, interacting with people and keeping an eye out for criminal activity.

More personnel means more potential for such work by police.

It’s not a fix to our problem, but it increases deterrence and the chance of catching people in the act of committing a crime.

They can’t do it alone, however.

If you see a crime or suspected criminal activity taking place, don’t just post a video on social media and whine about it; call the police.

If you want help, phone the cops. If you want likes online, that’s on you, not the police.

Or perhaps you think Chatham-Kent police should hire cops to spend all day on computers trying to keep track of keyboard warriors lamenting the state of things via social media. That’s not productive at all.

Jubenville stifled by council, IC: reader Editor: Council should have rejected the recommendations by the former integrity commissioner (IC), as what Coun.

Jubenville said which brought this situation into the forefront in the first place was harmless and simply expressed her opinion about the flag situation.

Regarding the flag situation, the council rejected a pro-life flag but not a Pride flag. Council gets to decide which ones are worthy to be flown according to what’s happened in the past.

So Coun. Jubenville responsibly recommended that council only fly Canada’s and the Ontario flags on our flagpoles.

I say ours because it is supposed to represent all of C-K, right? But not if

you’re pro-life.

This is indeed a witch-hunt, as what Jubenville said and did was not discreditable.

To state otherwise would be dishonest and disingenuous.

It’s certainly an uphill battle when you had 13 councillors voting to fine her three months’ pay and reprimand her last time, and then nine this time around.

Coun. Jubenville detailed many items which weren’t mentioned or addressed by the IC which also shows how skewered this process is about the topic and once again demonstrates that this should have been rejected by council and the IC. So now a councillor

can’t say that they’re against flying the Pride flag and only support flying the Canadian and provincial flags, otherwise someone will make an anonymous complaint and the IC will decide against the councillor, and council will fine them. (Editor’s note: No complaints are anonymous; provincial rules prevent an IC from identifying complainants).

Yes, one has to keep one’s opinions to themselves if you want to be on council. But only certain opinions, because this is clearly a case of stifling Coun. Jubenville’s opinions.

Financial program set up for seniors The Chatham Voice

With the aid of a provincial grant, Family Service Kent (FSK) hopes to help seniors better manage their finances.

The Senior Trustee Program is a new financial management service designed to assist older adults who face barriers in managing their day-to-

day finances safely and independently.

The program was supported by a $96,200 Seed grant they received from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF).

“We’re extremely grateful to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for recognizing the importance of financial security and

dignity for older adults in Chatham-Kent,” said Dan Farrow, executive director of FSK, in a media release. “Through this investment, we’re able to explore a new way of supporting seniors who may be struggling to manage their finances or in vulnerable situations, while also ensuring they can remain safe, independent,

and connected to their community.”

The program will provide trusted financial support to seniors who may be experiencing cognitive decline, isolation, or financial vulnerability, helping them maintain stability and independence in their lives, FSK officials said.

The project will also in-

clude outreach, partnerships, and community education to reduce the risk of financial abuse and improve the financial well- being of older adults in the region.

“Many older adults in our community face increasing challenges with financial management, whether due to cognitive changes, family loss, or

systemic barriers. This Seed Grant allows us to design and test a program that provides not only practical support, but peace of mind for older adults and their families.”

Said Shannon Jackson, manager of community support services at FSK. “We’re excited to collaborate with partners to make this vision a reality.”

Tree raffle raises $28K to support kids The Chatham Voice

The LoveWish Christmas Tree Raffle is growing roots and those roots are feeding support to local charities.

This year, the raffle donated more than $28,000 to the Children’s Treatment Centre of Chatham-Kent (CTCCK) Foundation.

“A forest of generosity, a wave of community spirit, and a total that will change lives,” is how organizers described the raffle in a media release.

Organized and led by Lisa Lester of Four Diamond Events, in partnership with the dedicated team at the Chatham Armoury, the LoveWish Christmas Tree Raffle continues to grow as one of Chatham-Kent’s holiday traditions, transforming the Armoury into a whimsical Christmas for-

est and bringing the community together in support of local children.

Lester recently presented a cheque for $28,038 to the CTC Foundation. The presentation marked a moment of deep gratitude and community spirit as supporters gathered to celebrate the collective impact of this beloved fundraiser.

The funds will directly support therapy programs, equipment, and resources for children and youth across Chatham-Kent. Each dollar raised helps ensure that local families continue to receive the specialized services they depend on, close to home.

If successful, the chief said increased patrols may be added to other downtown areas in the municipality.

Increased police presence helps deter crime, Earley said.

November cools home sales in C-K The Chatham Voice

Chatham-Kent home buyers are contributing to the chill in the air.

According to Chatham-Kent Association of Realtors (CKAR) figures, home sales in November were down 15.6 per cent compared to November of 2024.

When compared to the fiveand 10-year averages for the month of November, sales were off 13 and 17.3 per cent respectively.

The chilly fall for home sales also cooled off the entire year. After a hot start to 2025, home sales after 11 months are down about seven per cent compared to the same period a year ago.

Barbara McCaughrin, CKAR president, said there are some signs of improvement on the horizon.

“Sales activity was down from last year’s levels, although this belies the under-

lying monthly trend of rising activity over the course of 2025,” she said in a media release. “It’s been a slow and steady recovery that hasn’t necessarily shown up in yearover-year comparisons, but under the surface we’re seeing a very gradual return of more buyers to the market.”

With slow sales, however, comes an increase in the number of homes available for purchase, as inventory moves more slowly.

“Supply levels for both new and active listings are trending above their long-term averages, which bodes well in terms of choice for those buyers who are making the decision to jump back in,” McCaughrin said.

There were 191 new residential listings in November.

This was the largest number of new listings added in the month of November in more than two decades.

New listings were 5.8 per

cent above the five-year average and 26.4 per cent above the 10-year average for the month of November.

Active residential listings numbered 521 units on the market at the end of November, a gain of 22.9 per cent from the end of November 2024. Active listings haven’t been this high in the month of November in a decade.

Active listings were 38.3 per cent above the five-year average and 71.3 per cent above the 10-year average for the month of November.

Home prices have fallen somewhat as well during the sales lull. The average price of homes sold in November 2025 was $422,880, down by 5.4 per cent from November 2024.

The more comprehensive year-to-date average price was $430,925, essentially unchanged, up just 0.7 per cent from the first 11 months of 2024.

Hospice continues its accreditation The Chatham Voice

Chatham-Kent Hospice has positioned itself to continue to shine bright in support of local families.

The hospice has achieved Hospice Residence Accreditation from Hospice Palliative Care Ontario (HPCO) for the 2025-2028 term.

HPCO Accreditation demonstrates that an organization meets established industry standards

and is committed to ongoing learning, quality improvement, and excellence in hospice palliative care.

“Going through the accreditation process gave us the opportunity to evaluate our practices, strengthen what was working well, and identify areas for enhancement,” said Jessica Smith, executive director of Chatham-Kent Hospice, in a media release. “This peer-reviewed recognition reflects the dedication of our entire team to delivering the highest quality of care and raising the bar for hospice and palliative services.”

Keith Graham, chair of the hospice board of directors, said it is a team effort.

“This re-accreditation is a testament to the quality of care our team has been providing to those at end of life in Chatham-Kent.

The board of directors would like to extend our sincere thanks to our clinical and administrative staff, volunteers, and the families who shared their experiences, helping us achieve this tremendous accolade,” he said.

A mutual and future support effort

One student’s stitching abilities has helped bring a class together, and show support for a national organization that helps first responders.

Natalie Lutfallah began the initiative. The Police Foundations student at St. Clair College’s Thames Campus in Chatham started small.

“Last year, I had gotten an embroidery machine. I started a little business as a side job,” the Windsor native said. “I wanted to make myself a sweater. I told some of the others (classmates) and a lot of people seemed interested.”

As a result, more than half the class of about 50 people purchased sweatshirts with “Police Foundations” embroidered across the chest.

Funds raised from the sales, $730, went to Badge of Life Can-

ada, an organization that helps first responders across the county and their families who are dealing with operational stress injuries, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

“It’s very rewarding to be able to give something back to something that could be of use for us in the future,” Lutfallah said. “It seemed like an obvious charity for us.”

She said her professors loved the idea and it was well received by students.

“It was a way to bring us all closer together. It’s been nice to design the sweaters as a class and pick the charity,” she said.

One of the program’s professors said he was impressed by the students in this effort.

“I think the motivation and ambition of that class is incredible. The fact they came together to pick a law enforcement/first responder charity speaks volumes about them as a team,” he

said. “It’s so important to reach charity runs. Club promotes wellness

It has long been said laughter is the best medicine, and Claudia Ross wants to deliver that medicine to the masses in Chatham-Kent.

To that end Ross is starting a laughing club in Chatham. The group meets Sundays to share laughs and get healthier.

Ross said the concept

started 30 years ago in India. Dr. Madan Kataria of Mumbai founded laughter yoga.

“He realized his patients who laughed the most were those who would take less medicine and who would heal the fastest,” Ross said.

She said it is a series of fun laughter exercises that the group practises in order to benefit from the contagious effect of

laughter.

Along the way, participants pick up improved breathing and stretching exercises as well.

“We practice laughter as an exercise to add joy and peace in our lives,” Ross said.

“Studies show that the body makes no distinction between a real and genuine laugh and a simulated one. No jokes or comedy is needed.”

Kataria found this out after his first two sessions in 1995 in Mumbai were filled with jokes, which soon became stale.

“After two weeks, the jokes were repetitive and boring. He opted to create some exercises with his wife, who is a yoga teacher,” Ross said. “They discovered that even if you fake the laughter, the body doesn’t make the distinction. There are still

health benefits.”

Ross said the laughing has spread around the globe with hundreds of thousands practising the amusing and funny exercises in 120 countries.

“True laughter can promote peace,” she said. “It really helps your physical health, emotional health and spiritual health. You feel a difference in your life. Life becomes easier, lighter.”

Dock & Vine coming to Lighthouse Cove The Chatham Voice

There’s a metamorphosis underway in Lighthouse Cove.

Cove’s Landing restaurant will soon be under new ownership. Incoming owners Kyle and Stephanie Wagner plan to rebrand it as the Dock & Vine Stephanie has local ties.

Born and raised in Tilbury, she attended culinary school at Fanshawe College and focused on baking and pastries.

She has worked in bakeries, restaurants, event centres and catering in both London and Toronto.

Stephanie spent lots of time out at Lighthouse Cove and frequently went to the restaurants out there. The minute she knew about the opportunity to open a restaurant out there she knew it was the best spot, the Wagners said.

Kyle was born and raised in Calgary, calling Chatham home for the past decade. He is a Red Seal Chef and Junior Sommelier.

His culinary path has led him through Calgary, Toronto and London, with each city shaping his creativity and fueling his drive to master the craft.

Kyle said Lighthouse Cove has a strong connection to local farms and suppliers, and that allows him to highlight the exceptional bounty of Southwestern Ontario.

As for the name change, when Dock & Vine opens, patrons can expect to experience and taste local.

“We are all about local; we feel absolutely blessed to be in a region full of farmers. Fresh ingredients are so important to us,” the Wagners said in a media release. “We plan on showcasing local ingredients and utilize the bounty of Windsor-Essex, Lakeshore and Chatham-Kent. We have already connected with

lots of local suppliers and hopefully more to come.”

The menu is both fresh and healthy, with a few indulgences of course, they said.

“We are looking to bring something new to the region. We are excited to show our patrons what incredible food we can create with the local ingredients,” the Wagners said. “We are also going to be offering breakfast which currently has not been available in the cove.

And we also plan on being open all year round.”

C-K realtors refresh leadership, help others

Local realtors had a busy time of it recently, installing their 2026 board of directors and raising funds and food for a local food bank.

The Chatham-Kent Association of Realtors raised more than $4,500 at its recent annual general meeting, and collected 49 bags of food, all for Chatham Outreach for Hunger.

On top of that, outgoing CKAR president Barbara McCaughrin handed over a cheque for $3,770 to Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent, an organization selected as the Realtors Care grant recipient for 2025.

The AGM, held Dec. 10 at the Links of Kent Event Centre, saw the new board chosen. Included in the 2026 iteration are president Carrie Patrick, president-elect Ashley Amato, Carson Warrener, Bethanie Compton, Jackie Patterson, Mike Stull, Barbara McCaughrin, Michelle Hetherington, and Danielle Simard.

The association also extended heartfelt thanks to outgoing directors Matthieu Bechard, and Laurie

DeHaw for their dedication and service.

As the year comes to a close, 2025 President Barbara McCaughrin reflected on the achievements of the past year and shared optimism for the opportunities ahead in 2026.

National home prices slip

According to the Royal LePage House Price Survey and Market Forecast, the aggregate price of a home in Canada recorded virtually no change in the third quarter of 2025, increasing just 0.1 per cent year over year to $816,500.

However, on a quarter-over-quarter basis, the national aggregate home price posted a decline of 1.2 per cent, driven by depreciation in many major markets across the country over the summer.

When broken out by housing type, the national median price of a single-family detached home increased 1.2 per cent year over year to $860,600, while the median price of a condominium decreased 1.6 per cent to $580,700.

Let’s do our part on local roadways Be better.

That’s my message to local drivers and municipal staff tasked with clearing our streets and sidewalks, and their overseers.

I’ll start with us drivers.

With Christmas arriving in our laps next week, the streets are very busy these days. I urge all drivers

to follow the rules of the road.

First thing: be patient.

Leave yourself extra time to get to your destination.

More traffic means it will take a bit longer to get to where you’re going.

Use your signals to let others around you know your intentions. The roads

your vehicle, especially if it is icy.

When you turn onto a four-lane road, do it properly. If you turn left, turn into the left lane.

If you turn right, stick to the right lane. It’s the law to establish yourself in the lane you turn into before shifting over, if that’s what you want to do. I mean, unless you like possibly sideswiping other vehicles.

Watch your speed. We’re home to our fair share of aggressive drivers, but also some very cautious ones. Combine the two, speed-wise, and bad things can happen. The slow folks can add angst to the ones who seem to always be in a hurry.

Regardless of what speed you travel, please pay attention on the roads.

Have some situational awareness rather than just speed from traffic light to traffic light.

And if it seems like I’m pointing fingers, well, I’ll point one at myself.

Last week, while headed to The Chatham Voice’s Christmas dinner, I went straight when the light turned green at the intersection of Park Avenue and Queen Street in Chatham. The problem was, the only thing that was green was the left-turn arrow.

I blew through it, and only realized my folly when I looked in my rearview mirror.

I was not paying proper attention.

However – and this is not a defence for me, as my assumption was obviously incorrect – there should have been no left-turn-green light for traffic heading in the other direction. No vehicle was in the turn lane. I saw that fact and thought, “Well, we’re getting the advanced green.” Except I was wrong.

And I should have known better. I see it all the time elsewhere. At

lights where technology is in place to assign advanced green to vehicles travelling in one direction, or left-turn-only green to both directions, too often, that tech fails. Cars are left idling for no reason, as there is no one in a left-turn lane to prompt the signal to put up the left-turn-only green for both directions. This just slows the flow of traffic and clusters vehicles unnecessarily.

Yeah, I get it. This is a First-World complaint and in a community where we have rush minutes rather than rush hours. But small changes can add up to big changes in traffic flow, which in turn can reduce the potential for accidents.

Now, can we please have more timely plowing and salting of sidewalks?

People are walking on the roadways. I’m not talking about being out for a casual stroll down a back street that has no sidewalks. I spotted folks out on St. Clair Street, one of the busiest streets in Chatham, walking in the right lane. Or on King Street.

The sidewalks were just too icy…to the point these people figured it would be safer to walk in traffic.

That’s downright scary.

I also spotted a gentleman walking across the Third Street Bridge last week clinging to the railing. I wondered if he was in some kind of medical distress.

Nope.

He was just trying to remain upright. He left his skates at home. The sidewalk was as much glare ice as it was cement.

I realize the conditions last week were horrible.

Wet snow, followed by rain, followed by rapid freezing, but while we drivers enjoyed merely wet roads, pedestrians had a harder time of it.

Shouldn’t we be doing more to encourage people to walk, rather than drive?

Obituary Eileen Kneebone

Sadly Janis Hart (Mike) and Carol Loveday (Don) cousins of Eileen’s announce her passing at Riverview Gardens, Chatham on Wednesday, December 3, 2025 at the age of 97. Eileen is predeceased by her parents, William and Pearl (Stocking) Kneebone and brother Donald Kneebone. Survived by many cousins and friends who loved her and were blessed by her presence. She enjoyed spending time with her friends and family and traveling to many countries and places of interest. She was a lifelong member of Victoria Avenue United Church and served in the choir and at church events for many years. Sometimes cousin Sandy Filsinger would assist at the crepe dinners. After Victoria Avenue United Church amalgamated, her dear friends Gayle Martin and Anne Gibson would pick her up and take her to church with them. They would go out for lunch after and sometimes have her over for dinner at their home. Her career began with Western Freight and later with the city of Chatham where she retired from. She made many friends along the way, spending her final years at Riverview Gardens, she often expressed thanks for their care and kindness. Shirley McCorkle

of Chatham passed away on Thursday December 4, 2025 at the age of 86 years. She was the proud mother of Monica Oram (Rob), Sherry Brudritt, Miriam McCorkle, Terry McCorkle, Larry & Kim McCorkle, Stephen McCorkle and the late Karrie Hartford (survived by Basil), and will be missed greatly by her grandchildren Corey, Calvin, Kayla, Dealia, Lacey, Greg, Grace, Brent, Erin, Amanda, Courtney, Emily, Meagan, Damian and Moriah, their spouses and their families including a number of great and great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by three grandchildren Alisha, Joey and Melissa. Family was the ultimate joy for Shirley. She was one of seven children raised by the late Jurald & Elsie Boswell and is survived by Pat Smith (late Jim), John Boswell (late Gloria) and David Boswell (Cheryl). She was predeceased by Mary & Rupert McCorkle, Joe Boswell and Jerry Boswell (survived by Glenda). Shirley worked for many years as a Developmental Service Worker at Southwestern Regional Centre. She was loved and respected by everyone who lived and worked there. In every community, there seems to be someone whose positive spirit is impossible to ignore - a person whose gentle smile is as familiar as sunrise, even when clouds gather overhead…that was Shirley. Even though she endured significant losses in her life, she showed that the silver lining was always within reach, especially when she was surrounded by the love of family and friends. Her smile, her laughter and those genuine hugs that she gave will never be forgotten. Visitation for Shirley was held at the Blenheim Community Funeral Home on Tuesday December 9, 2025.
