CDS STUDENTS HEAD TO PHILADELPHIA TO STUDY FEDERAL RESERVE AND INDEPENDENCE HALL

In preparation for this, the seventh graders conducted a Zoom Meeting on April 19th with Todd Zartman. Todd Zartman is the economic education manager at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia

During the meeting, Mr. Zartman fielded questions from students that were curious about the current economic conditions in America and how they can best prepare themselves for financial success as adults Students addressed issues of credit scores, debt, and how major institutions are kept in check.

Next, the entire group headed next door to Independence Hall for a tour.

On Friday, April 21st, students in Grades 6 and 7 traveled to Philadelphia to see two very different exhibits, both of which are integral to how the US functions today! Since the 7th grade spent some time studying the Great Depression and the establishment of the Federal Reserve and the 6th grade learned about one of the founding fathers of America's economy, Alexander Hamilton, the Philadelphia Federal Reserve's "Money in Motion" Exhibit seemed a fitting display to check out (especially given the tumultuousness of the current US economy).

This experience was especially relevant for the Sixth Graders, who spent some time studying the Declaration of Independence this year. They were able to see the room where both George Washington and John Adams were sworn-in as presidents. There was also a viewing of the courtroom for the first Supreme Court and the meeting room for the Continental Congress.

The sixth graders also had a chance to see the Liberty Bell After viewing it, the students enjoyed ice cream and cheesesteaks at a local vendor. After a relaxing ride home, all headed home for the weekend.

Questions for Mr. Bromstedt:

Q: Are there any future trips you would like to take?

A: Yes, I would like to do an 8th grade trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC because it's my favorite museum in the city, and it has great historical significance.

Q What are 6th and 7th grade classes learning about right now?

A: In 6th grade, we are taking a break and doing a mini-unit on the economy and then we are going to do a deeper dive on the Civil War. In 7th grade, we are also taking a little break to focus on the federal reserve but then we are going to finish exploring WW2 and how it impacts the rest of the 20th century

Q: Why did you decide to do this trip?

A: Because it's good practice for 6th and 7th graders to walk around a new city since they will be going to DC for 8th grade The two places we are going to are relevant to what 6th and 7th are learning right now.

ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

2nd Grade, On Stage!

The CDS Second Grade took to the stage to perform their original musical

On a more technical note, the diction from the actors was incredible for their age. It is rare to see second graders project all the way to the back of a theater without mics. The audience was also able to tell what they were saying most of the time and the performers seemed like they wanted to be on the stage When asked if the students were nervous to perform, here’s what Mr. Buchanan said. “I would say that the students were a good combination of nervous and excited. I think you should be a little bit nervous before going on stage because that just means you're invested in the story you're trying to tell ” They were also clearly educated on how to sing well and on key. All of the songs were sung in unison and in harmony and they clearly had put in lots of work.

These past two Fridays, the second graders at CDS performed their original musical, The Shoe Adventure, for parents, students, and staff. The second graders wrote the show under the direction of CDS Music Teacher Mr. Buchanan, who composed most of the music and played piano during the show The show had a great lineup of songs, my favorite being “Come To The Dark Side” and the writing was great and realistically written, which is harder than people think. The cast included both Mrs. Hart's class and Ms. Albrecht’s class with stunning performances by all the shoes and Matty Walsh I saw many parents' jaws drop at the end of the opening number after seeing the incredible blocking and great singing.

I met with Mr. Buchanan after the show to get some extra credits from the show. The fight song, “Let’s Get Them Down To The Ground”, was written by the whole cast with particular students writing different songs and solos. The song “Come To The Dark Side”, was written by Oliver Buffum with the help of Mr. Buchanan and another song was written by Abby Mansoura with the help of Mr Buchanan

The crew was composed of Upper School volunteers and teachers Drama teacher, Mr Gordon, was running lights for the show and the two second grade teachers helped with costume changes here and there but most costume changes were done by the students. There were also two eighth graders in the booth helping with different things Kendall Hersch was running sound and Eva Merchant was recording the show so that it could be viewed by people who couldn’t come see it in person. The blocking (stage movements and positioning) in the show was incredibly advanced and creative One part that I especially loved was when two of the characters walk home and the shoes are on their feet. They had the people playing shoes crawl next to the real feet of the people wearing the shoes. While the plot was good, it was a little fast moving and hard to understand with the intersections of different stories and plots, but the end was good.

The ending also taught a good lesson to the audience about being yourself and keeping your shoes on. I loved the moment that the teachers yell at Vincent Lin to keep his shoes on The ending song was energetic and fun and was a great way to end the show.

Overall the show was great and it blew away my expectations. I was incredibly disappointed that I couldn’t go to the second showing but I made sure to wish the cast good luck The show was probably the best I have seen performed by kids their age and I can't wait for these kids to become CDS Presents actors. I can't wait to see what these kids do next year and I can’t wait to see what next year's second graders present. I give this show 4 5 stars!

TAYT’S TOP 25 MLB CURRENT PLAYERS (#25-15)

25. Gerrit Cole/ espn’s rank 19

23 Pete Alonso/ espn’s rank 29

Pete Alonso is a first baseman for the New York Mets and is a beast at the plate. He is very good as a first baseman, but best in the box. Pete Alonso has won two home run derbys and those happened to be back to back years. Pete Alonso also set the rookie record for home runs at 53.

22. Carlos Correa/ espn’s rank 24

Carlos Correa is a shortstop for the Minnesota Twins. Carlos Correa had an adventure through the offseason making him such an interesting player He started the offseason with the Twins then went to the Giants The Giants didn't like the results of his physical so they released him. He then signed with the Mets in a big deal, but they didn't like his physical results either so they released him. He ended up back with the Twins and that is where he is now

Gerrit Cole is an amazing pitcher for the Yankees While he unfortunately had an off year last year, he's hoping to come back and have a good year for the Yankees and try to win another Cy Young.

24 Rafael Devers/ espn’s rank 20

Rafael Devers is a third baseman for the Boston Red Sox and is an amazing hitter. Devers and the Red Sox had a tough 2022, placing last in the AL East.

18 JT Realmuto/ espn's rank 21

JT Realmuto is a catcher for the Philadelphia Phillies. He is by far the best catcher in the league and it's not a debate. He really relies more on his defense this year but his hitting is still very good for a catcher He got voted 7th in MVP voting last year which just shows how good of a player he is. He won the gold glove and silver slugger for the catching position which shows he's the best catcher in the league.

17 Francisco Lindor/ espn's rank 17

Francisco Lindor is a shortstop for the New York Mets. Lindor has played for the Guardians and the Mets. After having the worst season of his career in 2021, Lindor played way better in 2022 (last season) with 26 home runs and 16 stolen bases Since he joined the league, he has been one of the league's best shortstop

Corbin Burnes is a pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers and has won multiple Cy Youngs awards in his career. Since the beginning of the 2020 season, there have only been four pitchers that have more more than Burnes and only

Gerrit Cole has more strikeouts since 2020. Now Burnes didn't have as much of a dominant season last year as he was coming off a 2021 Cy Young season. But he still managed to have the most strikeouts in the NL with 243 strikeouts while throwing for two hundred innings.

19 Jacob Degrom/espn’s rank 44

The now 30 year old just joined the Padres after being with the Red Sox for the entirety of his career He was amazing and a clutch player for the Red Sox. NEXT WEEK WE WILL POST TAYT'S #14-9 PICKS!

15. Fernando Tatis Jr/ espn's rank 25

The last team that we think could make a run are the New Jersey Devils The Devils have one of the best young star Jack Hughes. Jack Hughes has a brother on the team, Luke Hughes. Luke left the Michigan hockey team after losing in the frozen four college playoffs. Luke only played two NHL games before going into the playoffs

In the final game of the regular season, the Devils played the Capitals, the game went 4-4 into OT. Then Luke Hughes took a shot, got the rebound and scored the game-winning goal. This is a good sign for the future.

We interviewed Mr Bromstedt CDS history teacher, about his predictions for the NHL playoffs.

What is your favorite NHL team?

A: Boston Bruins

Who do you think is going to win it all?

A: I want the Bruins to win but the Oilers could win.

NHL Playoffs and Predictions

Who’s In The NHL Playoff Seeding and Predictions

The NHL Playoffs kicked off on April 18. The Boston Bruins are the number-one seed in the Eastern Conference The Bruins broke the record for the most wins in an NHL season going 65-125. The Bruins are a powerhouse of a team with stars Brad Marchand and David Pastmak. The Las Vegas Golden Knights are the one seed in the Western Conference. The Golden Knights went 51-22-9 The Knights have big names such as Michael Amadio and Jonathan Quick

We predict that the Boston Bruins will win the Stanley Cup. The Bruins have done amazing work this year. They have a really good overall team Another team we think could make a deep run in the playoffs are the Edmonton Oilers The Oilers have Conner McDavid, currently the best NHL player in the world. This season McDavid scored his 300th goal and his 800th point. Another famous player on the Oilers is Leon Draisaitl

What teams do you think can make a good run for the cup?

A: The Rangers or the Devils are playing each other and the Rangers traded for Patrick Kane and the Devils have been a good team all year.

What do you think about the Bruins breaking the win record?

A:It’s nice, but most of the teams with a lot of wins tend to do badly in the playoffs and I would rather have an 8-seed Bruins team win, then the 1-seed Bruins lose early

Dear Trasketball,

I’m not an expert but here are a few tips. First of all you should tie your shoe, it would prevent you from tripping over yourself. Second of all, having an “I stink” mindset isn’t gonna make you any better To get better you need to believe in yourself and put in the work to reach your goal. I can tell that you’re really passionate about basketball, and you should never give up on things you’re passionate about just because you’re not good at it yet. I’m sure with a little more practice and faith you’ll be the best on your team someday

Sincerely,

ADVICE FROM HENRY THE HAWK

Dear Henry the Hawk,

I literally stink at basketball. It's not even funny. The last game we had I was benched the WHOLE GAME. Then, when I finally got to play, I tripped over my OWN SHOE! I can barely even make a basket, and I feel like I should just quit. Pls help.
