letter from the rector Dear Friends, As an anthropology major in college, my classmates and I spent hours debating whether language informs culture or whether culture informs language. While I do not purport to have the “end all-be all” answer to this chicken vs. egg conundrum, I do know that they both influence each other in real and meaningful ways.

Both language and culture exist as powerful elements defining and providing structure for human engagement.

On campus, the topic of relevance has been our theme for the school year. I can’t imagine anything more relevant than the exploration of culture and language. To that end, I am pleased to welcome you to the International Issue of the Chat. Throughout this publication you will see the role that both culture and language have had on our school and her people.

You will be introduced to the studies and Chinese language mastery of Cynthia McLean ’68. Just as Dr. Edmund Lee’s missionary experience in China made an indelible impact on his life, you will see how the study of Chinese language and culture influenced Cynthia.

On page 6 you will get to know Lyn Davenport ’70 who attributes her language studies at Chatham Hall as positioning her for an unexpected career as an immigration attorney. On page 4 you are invited to read about Sallie Chaballier ’72 who serves as an international advocate for causes that in particular focus on women and children, as well as those which align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Don’t miss Alumnae Voices and Legacy Parallels. These women, Sherley Young ’57, Fitzalan Crowe ’99, Mari Armstrong ’99 and her sister Alyssa Edes ’10, embody global citizenship and make an impact in the world at large.

All of these accomplished alumnae attribute aspects of their successes to that which they were introduced here at Chatham Hall. In this vein we continue to foster global perspectives and understanding, while also celebrating that which is essential to American culture, government, and the English language. At Chatham Hall world language classes and Latin study, travel opportunities, inclusive curriculum, cultural awarenesses clubs, and the purposeful building of a geographically diverse school community, allow all of our students to engage in meaningful relationships with one another. They will be prepared to serve as informed citizens of a global society.

While scholars may never reach consensus on the culture vs. language debate, we know that here at Chatham Hall both constructs will continue to play important roles in our instruction, programs, and the interests of our people.

Global Advocate for Women and Girls Sallie Wise Chaballier ’72

W

e are pleased to introduce you to Sallie Wise Chaballier, a member of the Class of 1972 who currently lives in Paris, France.

Sallie matriculated in 1968 hailing from Mansfield, Ohio, and was excited to embrace educational opportunities not available in her “rust belt” hometown.

At Chatham Hall, Sallie became a member of the purple team. Sallie was active in student life becoming involved with the performing arts through music and drama as well as the literary arts, serving both as Assistant Editor of the Columns and Editor of the Yearbook as well as on the staff of the literary magazine. With her high academic performance (Sallie received the Trustees’ Medal for highest GPA), a curiosity for Russian affairs, and a strong

interest in human rights, perhaps it could have been anticipated that Sallie would venture abroad to live out her personal and professional life following college. Sallie studied at Yale University earning a BA in Russian Studies and then Harvard where she earned an MA in Soviet Studies.

She currently serves as the President of FAWCO.

Upon completion of her formal education, Sallie worked for several years at the Harvard Russian Research Center and then was offered a position with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty where she worked for many years in Munich, Paris, and Washington, D.C. It was in Paris that Sallie met her future husband, Francois-Marc Chaballier. The couple eventually married and have two bilingual bicultural sons, Benjamin and Alexander, now out of university and living in the US.

FAWCO is an international women’s NGO whose mission is: to build strong support networks for its American and international membership; to improve the lives of women and girls worldwide; to advocate for the rights of U.S. citizens overseas; and to mobilize the skills of its membership in support of global initiatives for education, the environment, health and human rights.

Founded in 1931, it also is the oldest and largest organization advocating for Americans overseas (although its membership is not purely American).

In 2009 FAWCO introduced the Target Programs, which follow a 3-year cycle to bring clubs together toward a common goal and increase knowledge and awareness of global issues affecting women. FAWCO is a United Nations accredited NGO with special consultative status to the UN Economic and Social Council. “Together, through the Target Program, we (FAWCO) are making a significant impact on global issues and supporting the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs.)”

When her children were young, Sallie became active with nonprofit associations such as the Association of American Women in Europe (AAWE) which is “primarily American women, living permanently in Europe, enjoying our bicultural lives. We cherish the sense of community and lifelong friendship we find as members.” Sallie was attracted to AAWE and their research and publication on education and bilingualism. She later served as President and FAWCO Representative. Sallie became active with FAWCO (Federation of American Women’s Clubs Overseas) especially given the

In Sallie’s words: “It’s fair to say that I would not have lived the life I’ve led if it were not for my education at Chatham Hall. It broadened my horizons, gave me the confidence to aim high, and sparked my curiosity about the world. I had some splendid teachers at Chatham: Madame Neal and Mademoiselle Pineau gave me a solid grounding in French grammar and a love of French literature. Mr. Bruning basically taught me the English language as a language, as well as how to write cogently. Mrs. Larsen taught me how to write both analytically and gracefully. Miss Sayegh instilled in me a lifelong love of history, and Mr. Whittington gave me the best musical education one could hope for. And last but not least, Madame Csaszar introduced me to Russian, even if she would lapse into German at times. I absorbed enough to make it into Intermediate Russian at Yale and survive, and I took off from there.

Since I’ve made my way in the world through writing and analysis, I have always been thankful for the skills I honed at Chatham. The personal and intellectual confidence I gained at Chatham Hall stood me in good stead as I navigated predominantly male academic and professional environments (I once gave a paper at a RAND Corporation conference where I was not only the only woman presenting but the only woman in the room, period.) My “third chapter” in the NGO sphere has been extremely enriching and gratifying, not the least because I am largely working with women, for women.

One thing my NGO work has taught me is the paramount importance of educating girls. My life has been exceptionally fortunate, and my solid secondary education was the foundation of all I’ve achieved and experienced. I was delighted to learn last spring how seriously Chatham Hall today sees its mission of educating young women to be good global citizens, using the framework of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”

At the same time, the General Convention of the Episcopal Church voted to continue its support of international development programs, specifically, the UN SDG’s. At that time, Chatham Hall was in the throes of developing its current strategic plan, “Empowering Girls to Better the World”. The school recognized the commonality of its strategic plan goals and the SDG’s. Given the Episcopal Church’s endorsement of these as well, we have begun to frame some of our conversations in the context of these goals.

In September, Chatham Hall held an all-school workshop focused on the landscape of education.

The school engaged Grant Lichtman, author and education industry expert to lead a day-long workshop focusing on the future of independent schools and secondary school education. Members of the Board of Trustees and Alumnae Council participated with the school community in a plenary keynote session. Afterwards students and faculty engaged in a generative workshop. Using principles of design thinking, groups proposed pilot initiatives in support of Chatham Hall’s strategic plan, grounded in the context of relevance and the application of the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals.

in the international arena. Last May, Sallie connected with the Chatham Hall global network during our European gathering in London at Fortnum & Mason. During our time together, we discussed the current state of Chatham Hall and shared how our mission, Episcopal identity, and strategic plan naturally tie with the UN Sustainable Development Goals with which Sallie has been active through FAWCO. We would like to believe that her time at Chatham Hall helped to shape her confidence and character enabling her to find meaning and purpose in her home and community life. As a member of the Oak Circle, Sallie has continued to include Chatham Hall among her philanthropic interests. Sallie truly embodies the Chatham Hall woman who is “empowered to better the world.”

From A Love of Foreign Language to IMMIGRATION LAW Carolyn W. Davenport ’70

R

eflecting on her internationallyfocused career, immigration lawyer, Carolyn W. Davenport ’70, notes how life coincidences or fate, fortified by educational background, can lead to unexpected, exciting career paths. That was the case for Carolyn (“Lyn” to classmates), who has been practicing immigration law in New York City and vicinity for more than 35 years.

A Chatham Hall legacy (Carolyn’s mother, Carol Babcock Davenport, graduated from Chatham in 1947), Carolyn was an active member of the Chatham Hall community - a member of Service League, Saint Mary’s Choir, Sextet, French Club, Yearbook Board and Literary Magazine. The school offered unusual and exotic foreign languages for its time, including Chinese and Russian. While at Chatham Hall, she studied French under Miss Taylor and the infamous and colorful Ms. Keim. It was here at Chatham Hall that Carolyn developed a keen interest in foreign language studies. After being scintillated by her summer French studies in Grenoble, France, she went on to study at Denison University.

At Denison, Carolyn majored in French and took courses in Spanish and German.

During her spring semester junior year, she studied advanced French

literature in Avignon, France and traversed virtually all of the Western Continent. Committed to capitalizing on her language skills, Carolyn considered a variety of career options such as teaching, the importation of French wine, and a role with a major uniform manufacturer with production facilities in France. Little did she anticipate that she would pursue a legal career and utilize these three languages often!

An interesting story….One evening, her parents were busy entertaining when the next door attorney neighbor telephoned. Without her knowledge, Carolyn’s father authorized the neighbor to place a bid on a paralegal course being auctioned through PBS. Imagine Carolyn’s surprise when, at midnight, the phone rang again with a report that the bid was successful!!

Overnight, her path for the future changed. Carolyn graduated from paralegal school, moved from Ohio to

There, she became intrigued with and focused on international law, benefitting from a summer semester in a joint Sorbonne - Oxford - U. of San Diego Program in Paris. She was exposed to one course in Napoleonic Code, which is very foreign to our U.S. system of laws, but still integral in many countries, including in Quebec, Canada. She was on the Law Review Board, wrote her published note on European versus American intellectual property law and, was fortunate to have been offered a permanent position, with an international corporate firm in New York, N. Y. during her first semester, 2nd year of law school. (Such an early job offer is exceptionally rare.)

Although she might have loved returning to D. C., she couldn’t pass up an early offer on a “silver platter” in her area of interest. New York represented a new frontier.

Following her NY move, she was introduced to her former husband, a French Canadian from Montreal, Quebec (PQ) also working in the city; not long after marriage, his employer announced that he would be transferred to Montreal for a few years.

Unfortunately for Carolyn, this move limited her own professional options unless she met the additional extensive educational requirements for practice in the foreign bar. Fortuitously, she met the senior partner of the largest U.S. Immigration & Nationality firm in the country and investigated a rumor that one could represent US immigration clients without being a member of the Foreign Bar.

After confirmation, she gave up international corporate law (somewhat dry, by comparison) and joined that firm in charge of supervising the research and drafting the 2-volume then-only legal treatise entitled, Immigration Law & Business, published two years later by Clark, Boardman. From Montreal, she continued on the book, wrote immigration periodical articles and represented the firm’s clients at U.S. consular posts worldwide to obtain visa stamps. She loved Barcelona and overseas travel to new cities.

Simultaneously, she developed a private client base as a “representative” while in Canada, solving the Quebec Bar Association dilemma. Seven years later, she and her family moved back to the New York vicinity and, instead of returning to the firm, she elected to open her own private practice in NYC. That step took a leap of faith, especially given the office rents in the city, but it was a great move.

The immigration field is broad; boredom in this specialty has never been a problem for Carolyn. As contrasted with putting together international corporate deals in her first job, Carolyn found US immigration to be much more personable--frequent client contacts and empathizing with them on the often-dire consequences they could face from adverse governmental decisions. For many, whether or not they received a student or work visa

in the USA, for example, could have a major impact on their career plans, or if denied entry at the border and stranded from rejoining US-based family, analogous to a life or death situation.

Her practice has been diversified: from getting a green card/permanent residence for a Canadian native Indian via the Jay Treaty of 1462; to obtaining US citizenship for adults born overseas to one US citizen parent; to avoiding exclusion/deportation from our country the Brazilian wife of a Yale professor detained at a random border patrol stop set up one mile over the constitutional 10-mile limit established by an antiquated Supreme Court landmark decision. These are just samples from her niche repertory.

Her evolution into US immigration had been circumstantial, but proved much more rewarding than envisioned. In retrospect, she definitely spoke French with clients, UAE, Swiss and French attorneys over the years. Spanish and German came into play for reading or translations and her staff was by necessity fluent in Spanish. Carolyn feels that American elementary and high schools should place more emphasis on learning foreign languages like the Europeans, especially given the global realities of the business world, and is grateful to Chatham Hall for its avant-garde offering of many language flavors.

Washington D.C. and spent three years testing the waters on the likability of the legal profession at the firm now known as Baker & Hostetler. Carolyn was enamored with the law, but felt over time that she was as competent as the attorneys, but underpaid. So, she followed in her paternal grandfather’s footsteps to study at Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, Ohio.

Cynthia McLean ’68

Student of China

W

hen Cynthia McLean ’68 was faced with the choice of taking Calculus or Chinese during her senior year at Chatham, she chose Chinese. That choice would serve as the cornerstone of her future life beyond Chatham Hall.

Mary Spencer McLean would maintain contact with Dr. Lee. It was he who married her to Donald McLean in Watertown, NY, and she sent her two daughters to Chatham Hall, Cynthia ’68 and Mary “Woo” McLean ’70.

Cynthia’s time at Chatham Hall eventually informed her college major at Cornell. She decided to study Chinese as an undergraduate student and received a lot of questions and confusion from her friends and classmates. “As a Chinese major at Cornell between 1968-70, people would say, ‘Oh Chinese, how fascinating, but what will you do with it since we’ll never “As a Chinese have relations with Red China in our major at Cornell lifetimes?’ A boyfriend at Cornell told his father he was dating a girl between 1968-70, studying Chinese and he responded with ‘Oh, is she a Communist?’” people would say

Certainly Cynthia’s decision to choose Chinese was a true sign of her unconventional path as a pioneer in her studies and a unique contributor to her field both in Asia and in her current home in Vancouver, British Columbia. But, let’s back up and start from the beginning of this global journey.

“I have no idea how my grandmother (Carola Kimball) found Chatham Hall in the 1930s, for my mother, Mary Spencer Kimball McLean ’40, ” says Cynthia McLean. Yet she reflects on her mother’s experience fondly: An avid equestrian throughout her life, Mary Spencer Kimball McLean would have been a student during Dr. Edmund Lee’s tenure.

Dr. Lee, a former China missionary, welcomed daughters of other China missionaries in the 1940’s during the Sino-Japanese War, thus enriching the student community and committing to this cross-continental connection that continues today.

‘Oh Chinese, how fascinating, but what will you do with it since we’ll never have relations with Red China in our lifetimes?”

These kinds of comments were not lost on Cynthia, so she returned to her upbringing and her Chatham Hall thirst for global curiosity and cultural awareness that Dr. Lee introduced to the community early on. With her mother’s encouragement, she concluded the best way to truly study was to immerse herself in the culture. So, she took a leave of absence from Cornell and traveled to Taiwan,

As many alumnae experience in their own lives, Cynthia’s desire for global citizenship and her family’s fondness of the Lees were only the beginning of her continued Chatham Hall connections throughout her life. She decided to take a leap and travel to Taiwan, where her father’s WWII army buddy, John Guth, worked for Corning Glass, which had a factory in Taiwan. He introduced Cynthia to his Chinese lawyer who agreed to sponsor her. And, of course, John had married a Chatham Hall alumna, Polly Wheeler Guth ’44.

Cynthia continued to live and study in Taiwan until 1973, and returned to complete her bachelor’s degree in Asian Studies at Harvard. She then went on to Union Theological Seminary in NYC, finished a Master of Divinity in Chinese Church History, and worked toward a PhD regarding the work of the Episcopal Church in China. In fact, a portion of her research was about the many years spent there by Edmund and Lucy Lee as missionaries. “I went to Union Theological Seminary without a Bible, thinking I’d study psychology and religion then go to Zurich to become a Jungian analyst. I was given a Rockefeller Foundation scholarship for young people without a religious background, to ‘diversify’ the theological field. I felt no call to the priesthood — having neither the tact nor patience for parish ministry — and pursued the history of Episcopal Missions in China and Chinese Church history. I might note, too, that I’d become fascinated with Chinese folk religion while in Taiwan, which for a number of years interested me more than Christianity.” Union Theological Seminary (UTS) was a great fit for Cynthia, as her timing for divinity degree was also when the churches in China were beginning to re-open after the Cultural Revolution.

And, a number of the older Chinese church leaders from the 20s-40s had studied at UTS. It wasn’t until 1985 that Cynthia got to make her first trip to mainland China, fulfilling her considerable academic career. She would then make more than a dozen trips back over the years, leveraging her expertise and her connections along the way with the Program of the National Council of Churches, USA and moved to Canada in 1991 as the Director of the China Programme of the Canadian Council of Churches.

Not surprisingly, she also found a love for another mix of language and cultures when visiting family in New Mexico. There she discovered her appreciation for Georgia O’Keeffe and realized their connection as alumnae. “I had no idea Georgia O’Keeffe had gone to Chatham Hall at that time, but as an artist I can certainly understand why.” And when faced with settling down at the turn of the millennium, Cynthia was not ready to give up on her work in China. She chose Vancouver, which she reports is a “very Chinese city.”

Since 2003, Cynthia has been a gallery guide at the University of British Columbia Museum of Anthropology, primarily focusing on the Northwest Coast 1st Nations. In addition, she was the ghost-writer for the memoir of a significant Chinese Canadian. She stays in touch with Chinatown activities and Asian academic networks at UBC. When Chatham Hall asked for alumnae to respond with their journeys of global citizenship, we couldn’t have asked for a more curious and unique tale. This Chatham Hall girl found her academic identity and cultural connections on a global stage, now inspiring countless other students and alumnae to do the same. In a time of deep divisions and new attempts at political unity between the U.S. and China, Cynthia McLean found a way through persistence and enthusiasm to follow her passion to study Mandarin, and the rest is most certainly history.

which was the only Mandarin-speaking country available to her at that time. “Mother encouraged me to go. I suspect her time with the American Red Cross during WWII when she was in her early 20s was such an incredible experience that she wanted me to have an overseas experience too. In fact, she wanted to visit me while I was in Taiwan.”

HEADMASTER, HEAD WAITER:

Saving Chatham Hall

Wednesday, May 16, 1928, the Pittsylvania Courier published a 4 page special edition almost exclusively about Chatham Hall. Under the banner headline “MAKE CHATHAM HALL SOUTH’S BEST SCHOOL FOR GIRLS, AIM” the newspaper detailed the campaign to raise $325,000 to guarantee the school’s future. A mass meeting scheduled for that day at Chatham’s new Bennett Hotel would launch the drive for Pittsylvania County’s quota, $50,000.

The Right Reverend Beverley Dandridge Tucker, then Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia, Chairman of the school’s Board of Trustees, was honorary chairman. Homer L. Ferguson, President of Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry-dock would chair the campaign. Considerable space on that front page heralded the arrival of the Reverend Edmund Jennings Lee as the new head of the school.

All the optimism of “best school” assertions and the euphoria of meetings and committee resolutions masked a more worrisome reality. Within Bishop Tucker’s letter is an “urgent call” for “our people” to “rescue” the school. Chatham Hall had never had an endowment; rather, it represented what the Bishop called Reverend Pruden’s “unselfish sacrifice.” Until now, it had existed solely on tuition and special gifts. The bishop’s urgent appeal was for those who loved the church to save a school that had meant so much to the church since 1894.

Chatham Episcopal Institute had recently changed its name to Chatham Hall in an effort to make it more appealing. Unfortunately, its Principal, Eleanor Stone, had not been able to fix problems that had damaged its reputation. The trustees began looking elsewhere at the beginning of 1928 for someone to do that. The person Bishop Tucker had called upon was the Reverend Edmund Jennings Lee. Lee had been a missionary at the American Church mission in Anking, China from 1902 until 1927 when the revolution of 1926 – 1927 had forced western “foreigners” to flee the country. While

Anking was no longer hospitable after 1927 for Lee’s wife and three children, he still had tried to remain behind to help rebuild the mission. Illness had forced him to return to America. With no immediate prospect, Bishop Tucker had offered Lee the position of Rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Chatham and principal of Chatham Hall. There is no doubt that Edmund Lee knew of the school’s precarious position after he and his wife Lucy had visited in April of 1928, but as Lee later wrote, the trustees were hopeful that the $30,000 current debt could be erased by a campaign which they also hoped would also raise a substantial endowment. His wife, Lucy, was not in favor of the prospect, but as Lee explained much later in the August, 1944 alumnae newsletter, “the school made an extremely strong appeal,” so he capitulated. He and Lucy moved into the Emmanuel Church manse on Main Street in Chatham in late May. Soon, there would be initial regret.

By the first of June, 1928, it was clear that the campaign so trumpeted in the Pittsylvania Courier was in trouble.

Response had been so “meager,” that it had not even raised enough to pay for the campaign itself. It is interesting to note that a letter from the bishop in that special edition of the Courier had revealed that Chatham Hall depended upon income from tuition to pay for operations. With only 12 students enrolled for the 1928 – 1929 session, prospects were grim. Lee later wrote that since there was “little apparent prospect of being able to open the school … common honesty dictated” that the employees should be notified that they should find other jobs.

With suppliers refusing to extend credit, $30,000 in outstanding debt, few students and a tepid response to an appeal for funding, Lee began the process of closing down Chatham Hall. However, Edmund Lee was in for a surprise. When he

called in William Morrison, the head waiter in the dining room, he met opposition rather than acquiescence.

As Lee later explained the moment, Morrison reminded Lee that the school had been “founded on faith and prayer.”

The layman reminded the despondent clergyman that if he had faith, the school would “never close.” Writing in 1944, Lee gave an account of Morrison’s declaration without directly quoting him. In Lee’s account, Morrison had told him: “When you get to a place where you don’t know what to do nor where to turn, the good Lord will come out and fix things up for you. It has been that way in the past, it will be that way now.”

By coincidence, Lee and one of the trustees, Reverend Wicker from Danville, had planned a last ditch appeal to John W. Craddock, a Lynchburg shoe manufacturer. Also by coincidence, John Craddock had recently been named the executor of the estate of Frank H. Kidder of Boston, Massachusetts, valued at several hundred thousand dollars.

Craddock responded to Lee’s appeal with a check for $15,000. With that

By mid summer 1928, it was evident that Lee was confident about the coming year. A circular letter to his mission colleagues tells of his position at Chatham Hall and while it paints a favorable picture of the buildings and grounds, the most important comment regards the “devotion and loyalty of the students, alumnae and staff.”

and asked him to raise the amount to $20,000. After such a generous first gift, Craddock must have been stunned, but fortunately, was so impressed with what he later called Lee’s “consecrated nerve,” that while not immediately acquiescing, he would come to Chatham to assess the prospects. After his visit he donated an additional $10,000 making the total $25,000, nearly enough to pay off the outstanding debt. A third gift from Craddock of $8,000 brought that total to $33,000. A final gift of $25,000 given by Mrs. Arthur Kelley Evans of Hot Springs, Virginia gave Lee an operating capital of $28,000. Apparently, William Morrison had been right. It seemed the school had been saved. But not quite!

While the faculty and staff had been apprised of the school’s financial difficulties, there was little doubt that they would return for the new session.

Unfortunately, there remained the troubling reality of enrollment. Only twelve girls had registered for the 1928 – 1929 session. Nothing had been done for admissions. Lee would later write that he made many trips during the summer

No doubt, Lee’s experience as a missionary was helpful in securing students, not because of the mission itself, but because of his contact with Episcopal churches throughout Virginia and beyond. The American Church mission in Anking, China had been a major operation that demanded large donations. It included a regional hospital, a medical school for doctors and nurses, a boys’ boarding high school, a girls’ boarding junior high school, multiple staff residences, and support facilities.

Lee had been successful in raising funds to support that mission and so was well acquainted and respectfully received. Now Lee turned to those connections to recruit enough students to open in September with 56 students. To be sure, the recruitment was not easy. Once a parent of a prospective student asked him if he was the young man selling tombstones.

The church connections through Lee’s mission work would be responsible for later donations as well as many more students in the future.

When asked years later to what he attributed the “spectacular success of Chatham Hall,” Lee referred back to William Morrison. For Lee that would be the “reliance on faith and prayer.”

Despair changed to hope because of one school employee. Little is known about William Morrison. His first connection to Chatham Episcopal Institute is in the 1900 United States census where he is listed as a black male born in August of 1880 and gives his occupation as “dining room servant.” His World War I draft registration card issued November 8, 1918 gives his occupation as “butler at Chatham Episcopal School.” The final piece of evidence is a death certificate issued at the University of Virginia Hospital on January 21, 1930, that gives John William Morrison’s occupation as a butler employed by Mrs. Edmund Jennings Lee at Chatham Hall.

Clearly, Edmund Lee continued to attribute the salvation of Chatham Hall to William Morrison. At a moment of despair he had reminded Lee to have faith. Ten years after Morrison’s death Lee placed a plaque at the rear of the new St. Mary’s Chapel to commemorate Morrison.

success, Lee hastened back to Chatham to tell William Morrison that he had been right. The school was saved. But $15,000 was only half of the outstanding debt. With the early euphoria fading, Lee soberly realized that “you don’t get out of a $30,000 hole with a $15,000 ladder.”

Sherley Young ’57 The many Chatham Hall alumnae, like Sherley Young ’57, who remain connected with Chatham Hall beyond graduation fortify Chatham Hall’s ability to empower girls to better the world year after year through the investment of their time, resources, and confidence in our community.

After graduating from Chatham Hall, Sherley earned her B.A. from Smith College, where she spent a year studying in Paris, and her M.Ed from the University of Pennsylvania. Sherley’s varied career has been defined by common themes of service, empowerment, and a drive to help others realize their untapped potential, especially girls and women. In addition to working in several girls schools on the east coast and opening multiple women’s health clinics, Sherley has taken part in 14 trips with Habitat for Humanity International, working to empower individuals through home ownership in developing nations including Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, and locations throughout Africa. Most recently, Sherley has served on the board of a school for vulnerable girls in Tanzania, and led two trips to the school to conduct multi-week English fluency programs, with a third trip in the works.

Sherley credits Chatham Hall for giving her the space and confidence to try new things and realize her own potential, something she in turn has spent her career working to help others achieve for themselves.

Sherley has contributed to the Annual Fund for nearly 50 years, making her one of the most loyal members of the Chatham Hall Oak Circle. Sherley chooses to support the Annual Fund each year because she feels giving back is her duty. Thanks to much of what she learned at Chatham Hall through the Honor Code and work through the Service League, she feels the concepts of giving back and service to others are in her DNA. We are grateful for the loyal support of alumnae like Sherley who are enabling Chatham Hall to empower girls to find their untapped potential for generations to come.

The Hallam Hurt Travel Award is an endowed program gifted by Frances Hurt in honor of her daughter, Hallam Hurt ‘63. It is given to one student through a competitive process each year. Similarly, but on a smaller scale, the iQuest program enables students to pursue an essential question for which they prepare a grant proposal including a well-researched topic, itinerary and budget and identify a faculty sponsor. The iQuest projects are conducted in locations appropriate to the topic. The locations may be local, regional, domestic, or international. Awards are made after the careful review and recommendation of a faculty committee.

STUDENT DIPLOMACY CORPS Claire Carmody ’19 Travels to Uruguay This past summer I had the chance to travel to Uruguay thanks to the Student Diplomacy Corps.

I studied the Gaucho Culture and the overall culture of the country. I worked on a sustainable farm for a week, stayed with a local family for 12 days, and grew my proficiency in the Spanish language.

The week we stayed at the farm was definitely my favorite part of the experience. Every day we woke up early, sometimes before the sun rose, and took care of all the animals on the farm. I will admit, sometimes this was hard as it was winter in Uruguay and the weather dropped below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. In addition to taking care of animals, we went to a lemon farm, learned how to cook a traditional barbecue, kayaked, fished, and went on hikes to explore the beautiful countryside.

One thing I will never forget from this trip is the power of a smile. I will admit that going into the trip my Spanish was not the best. So when it came time for the homestay, I found myself insecure about my Spanish skills. Once I was at my family’s house I learned just how easy it was to communicate.

While we didn’t always understand what the other person was saying, we were able to communicate through laughter and smiling. There were moments where my host sister and I didn’t know how to talk to each other but through smile and laughter, and the game UNO, we were able to make a connection that changed my entire trip for the better.

Beyond Chatham Hall, I hope to continue exploring the world like I did this summer. I have learned how to communicate when language fails, and I hope to put this to use in my future.

Exploring different cultures around me has always been vital to my growth and I look forward to being able to continue to grow. I hope to return to Uruguay soon, but, even if I don’t, I know that the skills and lessons I learned on the trip will be vital as I move on to college next year.

Mabel Cumming ’19 Explores Basque Country and Culture I traveled to the Basque Country in Spain and France through the Student Diplomacy Corps over the summer. We studied Basque history and learned about their culture, beginning with a stay in Madrid for a greater understanding of Spanish culture, history, and language.

After a few days, we traveled all over the Basque region in northeastern Spain. We had the opportunity to explore cities, learn about the Basque economy, hike through the countryside, cook traditional meals, and celebrate their traditions and holidays.

My favorite part of the experience was hiking part of the Camino De Santiago across the Spanish-French border. It was really fun to hike with the other students in my group. We had the chance to learn so much about each other during the trek. It was easily the most beautiful place I had ever been, and I found that hike to be an extremely spiritual experience.

The biggest takeaway from this trip was the relationship I made with my host family. I had an amazing connection with my host sister and we became great friends. We still talk all the time. We taught each other our native languages and discovered all of our common interests. It was amazing getting to know someone who had a completely different background than mine.

During this trip, I gained a whole new appreciation for traveling.

I also got to practice my Spanish skills a lot and I feel like I can speak the language so much better now. This trip taught me a lot about myself as well. It was my first time traveling without my family and I think I gained a lot of independence and confidence.

IQUEST Cheney Knight ’19 Explores Food Culture in Italy This past spring break I had the opportunity to travel with Mrs. Mary Dare Hume to Italy for 10 days through the iQuest program. My question was how do social norms as well as public policy affect the Italian diet leading Italy to be one of the healthiest countries in the world. We approached the question from different angles in order to get the most thorough and accurate answer to our essential question. For us, this meant meeting with professionals, visiting a school, taking a cooking class, conducting surveys and keen observation. We met with Dr. Marialaura Bonaccio who studies the cardiovascular and socioeconomic ties to the Mediterranean diet. We also met with Dr. Monica Dinu who works as a researcher for the University of Florence, focusing on the Mediterranean diet.

These professionals were able to teach us a lot. We went to the International School of Florence where we spoke to and surveyed the students and faculty. We went to every genre of restaurant we could think of to eat and survey.

Conducting an iQuest research project was an exciting and rewarding experience. I was able to discover answers while simultaneously developing more questions. This trip encouraged me to be curious and intensified my passion for the subject.

This summer I traveled to Cambodia with the Hallam Hurt Student and Faculty Foreign Travel Award. I chose Cambodia because I wanted to study how gender inequality in an educational system impacts women’s access to healthcare.

The issue of women’s gender inequality is the most prevalent in Southeastern Asia; and Cambodia has many NGOs, nongovernmental organizations, working to empower and protect these women.

Our second day of the trip we visited Empowering Youth Cambodia. This organization operates four schools in slum areas across Phnom Penh. One of the teachers there, Chena, explained to me that Cambodian women typically receive less education than men and they have a larger responsibility to take care of their family. Women also start their families younger than men–in the provinces of Cambodia the average age of women getting married is 13-16 years old and is around 20 in the cities. EYC has social workers who go into the communities and talk with families about the benefits of allowing their children, especially girls, to attend school. EYC has a health clinic that is available twice a month for the entire community and teaches girls hygienic practices and the use of birth control.

Next we visited an NGO called Cambodia Women’s Crisis Center. Their mission is to empower women and girls to claim their universal human rights to personal security, to help many girls who are victims of domestic violence. This organization leads a scholarship program called “Girls Access to Education” which gives girls the opportunity to attend

school with the belief that it will reduce their likelihood of becoming future victims of abuse or trafficking. CWCC also15 holds many medical clinics. This is where I gained inspiration to start the PERIOD club. They partner with an Australian company which makes cloth pads for girls in nearby villages.

Many girls miss school because they are on their periods so CWCC makes it a priority to provide girls with the products they need to attend and thrive in school.

We also visited an NGO called Daughters of Cambodia. Their mission is to help women leave the sex industry permanently. Daughters offers women jobs making clothing, accessories, toys, etc. and provides a higher salary than factory jobs. They are all in a recovery program which helps them sustain a life outside of the sex industry.

Many girls are unknowingly sold as sex workers by their families. This is often due to the fact that families cannot support their daughters. This leads to sexually transmitted diseases and many other health concerns. Daughters provides a medical clinic to their employees and can test and treat women for HIV/AIDS. I learned that women’s lack of education and susceptibility to dropping out of school has vast effects on, not only the healthcare they receive, but also how they view their health and take care of themselves. Uneducated women are much more likely to marry at a young age, become teen mothers, be victims of domestic abuse, and receive sexually transmitted diseases. These mothers do not have the resources to care for their children, many of them are born malnourished, and this cycle continues on for generations–education is what can and often allows women to escape the cycle.

SPANISH LANGUAGE IMMERSION TRIP In preparing students to thrive in our complex and interconnected world, our global studies initiatives include a variety of travel opportunities. Examples include offerings such as service travel through our alternating South Africa and India spring break trips, alternating summer language immersion with academic credit for students of French and Spanish, summer cultural immersion opportunities through the Student Diplomacy Corps, and independent study through the Hallam Hurt and iQuest programs. Señora Jackson took a group of students on a summer immersion trip to Spain. As part of their cultural learning, students lived with host families while they took classes and visited Toledo, Ganada, Cordoba, and Seville as part of their studies.

Ayo Eniola ’20 on Making Educational Games for Kids This summer, I had the chance to work for 9ijakids, an educational game development company in my home country of Nigeria.

International Students Explore the Nation’s Capital Over the Fall Break, a group of international students traveled to Washington, D.C. for the chance to experience the sights and sounds of the nation’s capital.

The trip included tours of museums including the Newseum and Air and Space Museum, a visit to the Capitol Building, and free time to explore the exciting Georgetown neighborhood. Students and their chaperones also had the chance to visit the National Gallery of Art and Museum of American History, as well as time to explore the National Mall.

The girls, along with chaperones Yifan Xu, Martha Griswold, and Khadija Rahim, had a wonderful time bonding over shared meals and exploring the nation’s capital.

Reflecting on the trip, Dean Griswold said, “Ms. Xu created a great itinerary for our international students to get to know Washington D.C. including some of the wonderful museums and monuments that everyone should see. She also left time for fun exploration throughout the city. It was also just nice for students to have some relaxing time together and to enjoy each other’s company. It was also fun for me to spend time with Ms. Rahim and Ms. Xu!” In all, the long-weekend in Washington proved to be an enjoyable and relaxing break for all of the travelers.

Director of Global Initiatives History teacher, MacKenzie Kuiper, has been appointed the Director of Global Initiatives. In this enhanced role, Kuiper seeks to promote opportunities for diversity and inclusion, develop cultural awareness, and celebrate the international presence we have on campus. A new series called “Conversations on Culture” is led by our international students on topics of culture, country, race, or religion, followed by a question and answer period. The program is a safe space where our community is able to learn and grow from each other, gain valuable cultural insight, and celebrate the unique opportunity we have here in such a wonderful and diverse international community. In the spring, Kuiper will teach an International Relations course. “As our world becomes more interconnected, the content in this class has become more relevant. The class will feature guest speakers throughout the course, including a Protection Delegate from the International Committee for the Red Cross in Geneva, a Program Management Officer at the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean in Trinidad and Tobago, and a Legal Consultant at UN Habitat Kenya.”

9ijakids produces games specialized for Nigerian school children that are educational, acting as a supplement to school. They touch on the themes of culture, values, and entrepreneurship. While I was there, I started out as an editor, reviewing the games for any spelling or grammatical errors, but moved on to data analysis, collecting the information we needed to put into the games. After that, I worked on actually developing the games myself! I developed a game called All Ears that teaches about the parts of the ears and ear defects.

At 9ijakids I learned how important teamwork is to the achievement of a joint goal. As I worked in many different, but connected, positions in the company, I was able to understand how crucial it is for each part to work harmoniously in order for the game to assemble smoothly. Everything I learned in this job is relevant to today’s world.

Chinese and Vietnamese Students Share Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration with School On September 21, the Chatham Hall community came together to enjoy the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The holiday is a celebration of family and loved ones in the Chinese and Vietnamese cultural traditions, with a date selected every year by the lunar calendar. Students gathered in Van Voorhis Lecture Hall for an evening of mooncakes, stargazing, and fellowship. The Mid-Autumn Festival was hosted by the Cultural Perspectives and International Students clubs.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is traditionally celebrated with small pastries, known as mooncakes, comprised of a red bean paste wrapped in a sweet dough crust. Generally, mooncakes are baked into a round shape to signify completeness and reunion of, in this case, friends and family. The Cultural Perspectives and International Students clubs special-ordered the mooncakes for Chatham Hall’s celebration months in advance to be sure they arrived on time for the festival.

The group of assembled students enjoyed their treats, shared jokes and stories, and celebrated the spirit of the Chatham Hall community.

SPOTLIGHT ON BRAIN RESEARCH Neurolearning for Faculty

As students were traveling back to Chatham from Thanksgiving break, the faculty gathered for a workshop, “Neurolearning: Integrating What We Know About the Brain into Teaching.” This presentation led the faculty on a journey through the neuroscience of learning, emphasizing the functions of the brain and the variety of learning styles and means by which adolescent brains receive, process, and retain information. The well-researched findings included practical advice on overcoming common hurdles to learning and correcting common misperceptions about learning differences.

Presenters were Dr. Scott Hamilton and Scott Goode of the Howard Institute, a part of the Howard School of Atlanta, GA, a pre-K-12 independent school for learning differentiated students. Dr. Hamilton is the Assistant Head of School and Director of the Howard Institute, and Mr. Goode is the High School Principal. As they pointed out, students without learning differences are

able to learn from a variety of teachers, but students with learning differences need good pedagogy, which is exactly what was learned in the workshop.

The workshop was in support of Chatham Hall’s Strategic Plan, Empowering Girls to Better the World, specifically the goal Enhancing and Fortifying the Student Experience. This goal has established the Center for Applied Mastery Support (CAMS), providing students with academic support across the curriculum.

The presenters ended the day working directly with our CAMS teachers.

MADELINE MILLER IS WRITER IN RESIDENCE Award Winning Novelist

On November 7 and 8, celebrated author Madeline Miller visited Chatham Hall as this year’s Writer in Residence.

Over her two-day visit, Miller led a writers’ workshop open to interested members of the community, delivered a keynote address, and visited classes to discuss her work and writing process. In her keynote address, Miller shared her experiences as a writer and scholar of classic literature, as well as the personal history of her interest in the Greek storytelling tradition. Miller described how her involvement in the theatre inspired her first novel and fielded questions from students ranging from practical advice on writing a novel to finding a personal voice through writing.

Miller is an award-winning novelist whose first novel, The Song of Achilles, won the 2012 Orange Prize for Fiction and was a New York Times Bestseller. Her most recent novel, Circe, was an instant number one bestseller in the New

York Times and won the 2018 Elle Big Book Award. In addition to her work as a novelist, Miller’s essays have appeared in publications ranging from the Wall Street Journal and Washington Post to Lapham’s Quarterly and NPR.org. In addition to her work as a writer, Miller has also spent the last twenty years teaching Latin, Greek, and Shakespeare to high school students.

In recognition of her many contributions to the school, Chatham Hall seeks to endow the Writer-inResidence Program to name it in honor of Claudia Emerson ’75 who twice served as the Writer In Residence. A native of Chatham, Claudia Emerson later served as Dean and English teacher at her alma mater. She was recognized as the Poet Laureate of Virginia and was the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize. On Friday, October 12, Chatham Hall welcomed the family and friends of current students to campus for fall Family Day. The heavy rain and subsequent power outage did not dampen the spirits of the festivities.

Rector Suzanne Buck delivered a welcome address to parents, friends, and visitors in St. Mary’s Chapel to start the day. The girls and their parents soldiered on singing “This Little Light of Mine” in the dark! Afterward, visitors attended classes with their daughters while the Junior Class and their families participated in the Best College Fit® counseling workshop in Van Voorhis Lecture Hall. Led by former college Dean of Admissions and industry analyst, Peter Van Buskirk, Best College Fit® gives families the tools they need to find the healthiest and most productive college fit for their student by closing the informational gap between the rhetoric coming from a college and the reality.

fall sports It was an exciting fall at Chatham Hall, with teams receiving awards for their efforts and the first field hockey team to make it to the state tournament since 2006.

The Field Hockey team had a red-letter season capped off with an invitation to the state tournament, the first time since 2006. Led by coach Friso Kuiper, Chatham Hall’s field hockey team earned regular weekly rankings in the state during the regular season, climbing as high as sixth, and went into the state tournament ranked third in the BRC. The team’s 7-5 record during the regular season earned them an 8 seed in the state tournament. On Wednesday, November 7, the team traveled to Virginia Beach to face the number one seed, Cape Henry Collegiate, for the first round of the tournament. The day ended with a disappointing 5-0 loss, yet spirits remained high as the team reflected on their outstanding and historic season.

The Blue Ridge Conference (BRC) recognizes outstanding play across both the regular season and post-season tournaments, and many Chatham Hall athletes were included on the all-conference and alltournament teams. On the tennis team, Christine Leak ’22 was named to both the All-Tournament team as well as Second Team All-Conference. Vanessa RenHan ’20 was named to the All-Conference team thanks to her ninth-place finish at the BRC race. In addition to the groundbreaking success that the field hockey team saw this season, several team members received individual recognition for their performance on the field. Cheney Knight ’19 and Sarah Miller-Richards ’20 were both named to the All-Tournament team, with MillerRichards also being named first-team All-State. Earning Honorable Mention for the field hockey team were Marian Moreno Nieto ’21, Louise Strawn ’21, Delali Som-Pimpong ’19, and Virginia Roberts ’19.

Dancers this fall set themselves to the difficult task of translating the well-known and beloved text of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland into a series of dance vignettes for the audience to enjoy. The performance followed Alice, performed by Peyton Allen ’20, through well-known scenes in the book, her fall down the rabbit hole, her visit to the Mad Hatter’s tea party, and fleeing the Queen of Hearts back to her own world. Each piece in the performance displayed the full range of dance styles, from ballet to contemporary, and expertly conveyed the carefree and humorous tone of the source material. Dance teacher Ms. Donna Franklin expressed her pride in each of the dancers, saying, “The girls contributed to multiple aspects of bringing this show to the stage. They participated in writing the storyline, choosing music, assembling the set, and creating some of the choreography. Along with all that, they each gave fabulous performances of their characters!”

Under the direction of Ms. Gwen Couch, actors in the fall play set to work bringing to life the world and perspective of a child on the autism spectrum in their stirring production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. The play is an adaptation of the 2003 novel by the same name and follows Christopher John Francis Boone, a 15-year-old boy who describes himself as “a mathematician with some behavioral difficulties” as he navigates family challenges, school life, and discovering his own independence. Reflecting on the production process, Couch said, “The cast and crew worked tirelessly to learn about, and honestly present, the experiences of a teenager on the autism spectrum. This production placed incredible physical and emotional demands on the actors; their trust in and support of one another throughout this journey was truly extraordinary. ” Art teacher Susan Morley’s motto is “Risk failure to find success!” and embrace “Happy Accidents!” The students in her classes are encouraged to be open to the possibilities and potential they all possess. “It may be buried, but my mission is to help them discover what they are capable of creating.” The curriculum slowly builds skills as they add to their art “toolbelt” so that each new challenge is simply applying their skills adding a new challenge each time. “My goal is that they feel fully invested in nurturing their artistic vision and embrace risktaking in art,” says Morley. The skills the students have aquired this fall were on glorious display at the fall Student Art show.

legacy parallels Mari Armstrong-Hough ’99 and Alyssa Edes ’10, sisters who graduated from Chatham Hall eleven years apart, reflect on their travel experiences.

During your time at Chatham Hall did something spark your interest in international travel or global issues?

Mari —Before we packed up the car and moved me to Chatham, I’d never been east of Indiana. Chatham Hall felt cosmopolitan to me, even though the setting was rural. My roommate was from Korea, my Old Girl was from Maryland, the family my parents were paired with were from New York. During my first month or so at Chatham, I went into town with a group of girls. One of them--I think it was Mona Ahmed ’97--looked around and said, “We’re a girl from India, a girl from Alabama, a girl from Saudi Arabia, a girl from Illinois, a girl from Virginia. This is what I love about Chatham Hall.”

Alyssa —I came to Chatham with a passion for travel that only grew from being surrounded by so many international students. Most of my friends were Korean and when the opportunity to apply to a scholarship to study abroad came up, my roommate Amy Hong ’10 said, “Well you HAVE to apply to go to Korea!” I did, and spent the summer between my junior and senior year there in what was one of the most valuable experiences of my life.

Was there a particular Chatham Hall faculty member who influenced you?

Mari —In terms of thinking about international study and travel, that would be Beth Mullen ’83, who taught my sophomore English class. She had gone to graduate school in France and I thought that sounded like a marvelous idea. I wasn’t troubled by the fact that I didn’t take French.

Alyssa —Robert Ankrom, our Communications Director, and Kyle Kahuda, our science teacher and later Dean of Students, were endlessly supportive of me in all of my endeavors, academic and otherwise. They had a lasting impact on me as a person. In terms of travel specifically though, my favorite class was Geoff Braun’s AP Human Geography. I loved learning about the history of other cultures and getting to mentally globe trot.

Did you study abroad? If so, where, and share an experience you had.

Mari —In college, I studied abroad in London and on Semester at Sea: Japan, China, Vietnam, Singapore, India, Seychelles, South Africa, Brazil, and Cuba. In graduate school, I spent a year at Okayama University in Japan thanks in large part to Kazue (Hata) Matsuo ’80. Kazue and her husband Takaaki took care of me like family--I have no idea what I would have done without them.

Alyssa —I actually did not get to study abroad in college! My school didn’t offer scholarships for external programs and it had limited internal programs, so I ended up staying in Boston all four years -- which is why I’m so grateful that I did get to study abroad through Chatham during high school. I did the Experiment In International Living program, which was made possible through the gift of a Chatham alumna.

Have you traveled for your job and where has your work taken you?

Mari —I travel a lot for my job. I lived and worked in Japan for five years, first as a JET, then as a researcher, then as an assistant professor. My work as an epidemiologist has also taken me to Uganda, Ethiopia, Nepal, and Mexico. I spend a couple months a year in East Africa, but spread out over several trips.

Alyssa —Yes, I’m a producer and editor at NPR and I’ve traveled to cover stories across the country, including in CA, NY, PA, VA, FL, and NC. Last year, I went to China for two weeks with Steve Inkseep to report on Chinese culture, politics, and business. I’m currently hunting for international fellowship opportunities and planning a reporting trip to MI, which you can hear on the radio soon!

Barbara Mallory Hathaway Mary Speer Marr, class of 1939, died Nov. 13, 2015 and I was her roommate for 3 years. I’m living in Owings Mills, MD. I am a widow, with 4 children who, unfortunately do not live nearby. I also have 5 great grandchildren, who also live far away, but they all take turns visiting me and spend Christmas with me. I am very blessed!!!!

Helene Zimmermann Hill Had such a wonderful visit to Chatham in May with husband, George, and Eleanor Owens Earle ’46. I am greatly indebted to Eleanor for her loyalty and support. The school was as beautiful as ever and going strong under the capable guidance of Rector Suzanne Buck. She has been doing a wonderful job and I am so sad to learn that she is leaving. I was honored and humbled to be a recipient of the Distinguished Alumna Award for my modest scientific achievements and for having the guts to stand alone against my University and my colleagues as a whistle blower who believes in honor and scientific integrity. My book that describes my efforts is available on Amazon in print and Kindle: Hidden Data: The Blind Eye of Science. We moved to Baltimore in October after I retired from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and would love to have Chatham friends and classmates come to visit. We are pretty much settled into our new apartment.

We just got back from an amazing trip to Alaska with daughter, Lana Hill ’82.

We travelled by train and plane to see Denali and by ship and plane to see the fjords and visit some of the towns.

Katherine Springs Milnor Known at Chatham as TINK is well and living now in Birmingham, AL after the death of her husband Dr. Pervis Milnor of Memphis, TN and Vero Beach, FL. I returned six months ago to Birmingham where I have a daughter, son and grandson. I play a lot of bridge and would love to hear from anyone in my class.

Cynthia Murray Henriques Enjoyed the Chatham luncheon gathering this summer at the Boothbay Gardens, drove up from Falmouth with Didi Silliman Stockly ’53. Enjoyed meeting Suzanne Buck and hearing her talk about the goings on at Chatham.

We now have four great granddaughters - the eldest is 6, her sister is 4, and the youngest sister was born August 23rd, and are the daughters of our grandson Jay Henriques. The fourth great granddaughter was born in June, child of Alice Henriques, Jay’s older sister, and we have seen all but the youngest this summer. Busy happy times! Our daughter Mary Henriques ’73, is coming for a visit in early September.

Dick and I stay put these days, and our family comes to see us in Maine, which is great. Our youngest, Tom, lives in Portland and stops by frequently to help the old folks as he can, which we appreciate! I still play the piano, and volunteer at the Skyline Farm Carriage Museum in North Yarmouth, where we have a wonderful collection of carriages and sleighs, over 100, and put on Summer and Winter Exhibits, lots of vehicles to choose from. Go driving occasionally with my friend Patsy O’Brien; she has a Dartmoor pony, great fun. Patsy taught riding at Chatham for a short time in the late 50’s, so we do talk about Chatham at times!

Trinity Church, York Harbor, one of Maine’s many summer chapel congregations, celebrated their 110th anniversary and honored Carol Jeanes Hollingsworth ’50, a longtime retiring Trinity Trustee.

Mary Griswold Horrigan My broken down old body and I still live in assisted care at Wentworth Senior Living. Getting old is hard work. I watch the tide come in and out and the people come and go. I wonder what this crazy world is up to, especially climate change!

Josephine Cornwell Parman My life is Allerton Farm. In 2019 the house will be 200 years old. On Sunday May 26, 2019 we will celebrate all over the farm this great occasion and a few birthdays. In July of 1958, Dr. Yardley married me to Frank Oas at this farm during another fine celebration. Our three children are still a very important part of the farm. Chathamites are always welcome!

Susan Elder Martin Charlotte Caldwell’s ’70 latest book The Faces of Local Food: Celebrating the People Who Feed Us is now out. Her parents chose to enroll her at Chatham Hall after hearing my rave reviews about the school I loved and love so deeply.

Jane De Hart My biography titled Ruth Bader Ginsburg, A Life will be in bookstores on October 16. (It can also be ordered on Amazon.)

Knopf has organized a book tour in October and November which kicks off in New York on October 15. I would love to see old and new Chatham friends while on tour, should you be in Boston, New York, Washington, Atlanta, Houston, St. Louis, Los Angeles, or San Francisco. On a more personal note had wonderful visits with my Chatham roommate, Elizabeth Hulick ’54 in New York City in June.

She is involved in all sorts of projects involving Russian translation of various books, travels often to France, and has a summer home on the Cape. My husband and I had a lovely visit to Santa Fe in late July, but otherwise we are enduring an unusually hot and humid summer in Santa Barbara. California, like much of the West, is plagued with wildfires once again.

Mary Driggs Pacholczyk Since I am now almost 82, I often wonder how my dear classmates from so long ago are doing. I have been a widow almost 4 years now. The good news is my sister and daughter and 3 delightful grandsons live right down the street. I am enjoying Bible Study and working at the food bank. I try to swim each day and walk my 2 dear little dogs.

Still in Brooklyn Heights and would love to see any classmates in NYC. Anne Sallee Slater Cliff and I are well. Had some health issues in February, but hopefully they are in the past. Cliff is still working as a Financial Consultant and I am still an Antique dealer doing shows in California.

We divide our time between Portsmouth, RI in the summer and Pacific Palisades, CA in the winter. Our daughter, Pam, now lives in Port St. Lucie, FL. We get to see more of her now that she left St. Thomas and sold her charter business. Funny that she is retired and we are still working!

Claire Gardner Robinson I’m successfully just over a second bout of breast cancer, as in it’s gone! Hooray!

Radiation finished in early August. Now having a great summer up at our place on Long Lake in Bridgeton, Maine. We spent this past weekend in Lenox, Mass. for Tanglewood, plays, and shopping.

In October Ken and I are on to San Francisco and then a cruise up the Colombia and Snake rivers for a week via the American Cruise Lines. Been on several of theirs and really recommend them.

Margaret Cushing In January I went to Northern Italy with other travel agents and saw winter in the Dolomite Mountains in the Veneto and visited Venice. I have recovered from my accident last year and have many trips planned before 2019.

Lee Porter Page Next May is my 60th reunion from Chatham Hall, and I plan to be there.

I hope that many of my classmates will join me as well. This summer my husband David and I visited Caper Washburn Tissot ’59, my Chatham roommate. We had not seen one another for 50 years. We had a great time, and promised each other to do it again soon and not wait another 50 years.

The next youngest person working in the charity offices is 32 (and they consider 35 to be over the hill) so you can imagine there is quite a bit of grooming involved to get this 76 year old presentable before work! I would be thrilled to see any classmates at the exhibition if they will be in London.

Sarah Perkins Smither ’60 and I keep in touch regularly. Who could have imagined - when we first roomed together as freshmen - that we would have so many things to talk about! I scarcely appreciated her wisdom at the time; but I do so now. Old friends are everything!

Eliza Wolcott Morehead I had my 6 week hiatus from having Kai, my 17 year old grandson who attends Austin High School, here in the spring.

He’s back and we are STILL dealing with credits transferring from Tokyo. Long triangular trip this summer (Delaware/ Tokyo/Bali/Tokyo/Austin). So crazy!

My eldest of 7 grandchildren, Andy, graduates from Marblehead H.S. in June and off to Middlebury - the chicks begin to fly! A floor cloth I painted 15 years ago for NYC dining room is now back for restoration after apartment above had a major leak - lucky me! Love to all the classmates.

Kate Perkins Hartsfield In June my sister Peg (Peggy Perkins Sise ’67) and I went to Eatons Ranch in Wolf, WY with 6 friends. Every day we laughed, we rode, we laughed some more, rode some more and then had a little wine. Couple that with the awe inspiring scenery and you have the best, most relaxing vacation ever. We can’t wait to go back next year. In April Peg and her CH friend Mary Dykema McDonald ’69 and I stayed on Cumberland Island which is off the coast of Georgia. Although we were at my house, I was kicked out on Sunday to make room for more Chathamites. Mary and Peg treated me like a guest - no meals to plan, floors to mop or beds to make.

Perfect! Spent a night with Jeffrey Zeiler ’65 at her apartment in NYC in February.

We managed to cram 3 museums and a chat at the Historical Society into 24 hours. I had been helping 2 friends show their dogs in the obedience competition at the Westminster KC Dog Show. Not sure that I was all that helpful but it was so exciting. Being a widow is sometimes a hard row to hoe but my terrific family and friends are a tremendous blessing.

Wendell Shepard Chisholm My daughter Kimberley and I just returned from a 2 week trip to Africa with a group of veterinarians, arranged through the UC Davis Veterinary school. This was my first visit to Africa and first visit to a 3rd world country.

We started out visiting Rwanda and going on 2 Gorilla treks. (The mountain gorilla is endangered with only 1000 left at this time.) Then we visited the Genocide Museum in Kilgari, a very moving experience. Then a flight to South Africa where we worked with local veterinarians and rangers to help with rhino darting. The rhinoceros is also endangered, with poaching a big problem. The rhino chase was similar to storm chasing, with the helicopter chasing the rhino, and we chasing the helicopter (in land rovers), until the rhino went down after darting (tranquilizer). Then we microchipped the rhino’s horn, to catch poachers. This trip was way beyond expectations and we would go back in a heartbeat!

Lucy Williams Maish What a fabulous Spring! I spent Easter in Italy with my lovely step-daughter, Melissa and her husband, Matteo and daughters Bia and Elly. I hadn’t been in Florence for 10 years! More amazing than ever! After the fabulous 50th Reunion of 27 of our dazzling classmates, I spent a weekend with my son, Parker Maish and his wife, Molly and my grandson, George (3 yrs old) in N. Manchester, IN. What a special treat! I spent a wonderfully patriotic music and fireworks filled 4th of July with Muffy Dent Stuart ’68 in Lexington, KY. Then I had a fun visit with Jay and Trina Robinson Secor ’68 in Perrysburg, OH. Nice to drive by the house I grew up in.

My daughter, Cary Maish Brodie ’97 and her husband, Charles live near me so I see them often for family dinners and help with home and garden projects.

Laurie Nussdorfer I thought that Chatham Hall might like to know about a second memorial window (the first is the St. Agnes window in the chapel) to alumna Nellie Greene ’70 that has just been dedicated at the church of St. Martin in the Fields in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The designer actually portrays Nellie complete with her wheelchair, tablet (she had to type communications because she couldn’t speak) and stiffened fingers from the neurological damage sustained in the auto accident that disabled her in 1970. It is in the church where Nellie was baptized, confirmed, ordained as a deacon and buried, but what is most interesting is that it has been installed above what the church calls its deacon door. That refers to the role of the deacon (and the people) who take the work of faith out that door into the world, as Nellie did in her ministry. The text surrounding the portrait captures her ministry eloquently. Another nice touch is that her parents’ initials are inscribed on either side of her picture. Her mother is Cookie Robinson Greene ’41.

I am hoping to visit Alice Moore ’69, Peggy Perkins Sise ’67, and Mary Dykema McDonald ’69 in spring and summer 2018! After our fantastic 50th reunion at Chatham Hall in May, three of us who are members of the class of 1968 met up with Peggy Perkins Sise ’67 and Mary Dykema McDonald ’69 on Peggy’s fantastic Cumberland Island (Georgia) for a week of armadillos, alligators and wild horses (plus beaches and great meals).

Christine Robinson Secor What a 50th Reunion we had! Laughter, music, quiet times with lifelong friends, learning about 21st century Chatham Hall, and of course eating delicious (and now healthy) Chatham Hall food together, made for a grand time, even though it was all too short. We missed those of you who couldn’t get there, but perhaps we might see you this coming spring for the 125th anniversary? Jay and I spent wonderful family time this summer with our 6 grandsons and 2 granddaughters. Our summer highlight was to learn that Jay’s lymphoma responded as we hoped to the chemo treatments and is now gone! Thanks to all of you for your prayers and good thoughts which sustained us.

Muffy Dent Stuart All the grands came to Lexington to help celebrate my birthday in July!! Great fun. I am still reveling in the fun we had with classmates at our 50th in May and look forward to being on campus first weekend in May 2019 to celebrate Chatham’s 125th!!!

Ann Watson The joy of my life is taking care of my almost-five-year-old granddaughter.

One of the things we enjoy together is baking. She has become quite a baker.

Last week she rolled out, cut, and placed on the baking sheet a pan of pie dough cookies, completely independently. By the way I designed the pantry myself.

It’s a great work space. She loves stories, so I get to share books with her too. I’ve been working part time this summer at Rokeby Museum in Ferrisburgh, Vermont. It’s a National Historic Landmark and a well documented Underground RR site. I continue to help genealogy clients find their ancestors and am moving into writing the stories of ancestors’ lives. Still “chanting the Names” with the harmonium every day. I’ve been enjoying our Facebook page “Chatham Hall 1967-1971.” Great to be in touch with everyone. Ashley Deal Moss It has been many years since I put something in the Chat. Three years ago I retired from Alabama Department of Rehab after 29 years of state service.

I’ve been enjoying travel, reading, plays, music, and so much more since then, things I didn’t have time for when I worked. I saw Dr. D. Burch last Fall on a Carolina trip. We had a great time talking about Chatham in the 1970’s.

She is doing well and still traveling a lot.

I’ve been to Texas twice and on my way to Gulf Shores this Fall. Travel is great to be able to do now. I have a fantastic great grand niece and nephew I adore in Lexington, SC. I’m still in Millbrook, Alabama. I do volunteer work at Easter Seals regularly. Would love to hear from classmates. I have a few through FB where I’m listed as Ashley Moss.

The kids are Ella and Roman Steuer, great grand niece and nephew.

Julia Morris Kashkashian Class of 1975! Following on the wonderful gathering hosted by Mary Boy ’75 on the east coast in 2017, a smaller group of classmates met up in Colorado for a long weekend in the mountains. Julia Morris Kashkashian ’75, Emily Todd ’75, Katherine McKay ’75, Ellen Holcomb ’75, Alicia Monks Murtha ’75, and Susan Bruce ’75 got together in Breckenridge for a few days of mountain walks, evening cards, and fun meals together. We’re all busy in different ways - Susan is running Susan Bruce Travel in Denver, with trips to special natural & heritage sites around the world; Alicia has retired from her career as an ICU nurse in Albuquerque and is enjoying her first grandchild; Katherine has sold her accounting business and is dipping her toe in the retirement life; Ellen still runs Viking Travel in Chapel Hill, and is looking forward to her first grandchild in Sweden next spring; Emily remains active in Houston’s cultural community; and Julia is happily retired from The Nature Conservancy in Colorado. We missed many other classmates whose busy lives kept them away this year.

We anticipate an east coast gathering next spring and then our 45th in 2020.

Mark the calendars!! Our get-together was made even more special by the generosity of Sarah Martin Finn ’74, who allowed us to use her family’s mountain home. In return for her hospitality we are making a contribution to the Legacy Scholarship Fund.

Terri Coleman Martinez I have a few new things in my life. I have a new grandson. He was born in June so that brings my grand total of grand babies up to three. The newest addition is Jalique Camden McDaniel.

I’ve enclosed a picture of him. In this picture he’s lying in the cradle that his mother slept in when she was a baby and he’s lying on the baby blanket that I started making almost thirty years ago but hadn’t completed yet. Next I finished my 6th book. It’s currently being edited and will be released later this year. It’s titled Passport Wife. Last but not least I started a non profit organization named A Blessing For You. We are providing blessing baskets to new mothers. You can check us out on Facebook.

days before the wedding and was in a full cast and wheelchair bound with surgery requiring 8 pins and a plate on the following Monday! But between her Bryn Mawr gang, family and friends everyone made it thru! Virginia is on the mend in San Diego where she is working for the Women’s Museum of California. I was fortunate to spend Christmas in Paris which was a treat and did a bit of antiquing for business too. I am beginning to wind down my shop in Nashville and am searching for homes on the Carolina coast especially around New Bern - hoping to find a historic house (so if anyone knows anyone in that area selling a house!!!).

Have to admit I am looking forward to retirement although I have been approached to consider taking a group or two antiquing in England and France which I am considering - this January was my 37th trip to the English antique fairs so I think I have it pretty down pat at this point!

Nancy Hilliard Joyce My book, The Education of Little Me, will be available on Amazon in the Fall of 2018. The entire book is about both my education and life-learning experiences, where Chatham Hall plays a large part.

It has stories of my failures (and there are many) and how I eventually turn them into successes. It gives anecdotal life lessons and it unfolds truths of how falling down can ultimately make us stronger. Each of us all has a story to tell but I decided to tell mine through the lens of education.

Melissa Dixon Mathews My family ended 2017 on a sad note.

My father, Peter Dixon, passed away just before his 89th birthday. My father always thought that choosing Chatham Hall was one of the best decisions I had ever made. He made the drive from Florida for every Christmas service and every Fathers’ Weekend. 2018 has been great so far. My husband, Mark, and I celebrated our tenth anniversary in March. Our son, Will, starts 5th grade in the fall, and our daughter, Claire, turns 4 in October. I’m so looking forward to catching up with my classmates at our 25th (surely, it hasn’t been that long) anniversary next Spring.

Sarah A. Wood Hi Chatham Hall family! I wanted to send an update to share that I have been hired full time as an adjunct professor in the English Literature Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where I have been working part time since 2010.

I will continue teaching courses in 20th and 21st century American Lit. (I teach Claudia Emerson ’75 poetry as often as possible, and designed a course about she, Elizabeth Bishop and Sylvia Plath!

My students LOVE her writing.) Also, I have begun to publish my poetry, and have had six poems accepted in journals such as Columbia Review, Broad River Review, Wayfarer Magazine, and Mom Egg Review. Dave and I are soaking up time with our three sons (12, 10, and almost 4) while they are growing into kind, funny, thoughtful young men. I am excited to watch our relationships develop as they age, and as I stretch my own wings further from home life. Don, Gayla and Leigh Wood live just down our street and I am thankful for them, and that my children get to spend so much time with them. If you are passing through Madison, WI, let us know! Sarah Matista After spending five years leading marketing communications for Vistaprint’s digital division, before starting a new job I decided to take some time off this summer to catch up with old friends and take a longawaited trip to Europe. First, I enjoyed a weekend with Kat Currin Morris ’01 and her youngest daughter Sarah (my adorable namesake!), and then spent an incredible week in Sicily with my boyfriend of six years, Gus. After Gus headed back to work, I spent two weeks exploring the Catalonia region of Spain.

It was an amazing trip, and I am so glad I took the opportunity to experience and photograph that part of the world before starting my new position as the national marketing manager for The Palm Restaurant Group. Come see me next time you’re in Washington, DC - I promise not to make you look at my vacation slides!

Jennifer Hinson Bamigboye Tunde Bamigboye and I were married on May 5, 2018 in Philadelphia, surrounded by friends and family. Madeline Hicks After graduating from Virginia Tech with a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering in May 2016, I accepted a position with General Motors in Detroit, MI. I just celebrated my 2 year anniversary with GM and started a new position within the company as a Hybrid Calibration Specialist. I am loving Michigan so far and would love to connect with other alumnae in the area! Last Christmas I got engaged to my wonderful boyfriend of 6 years, CJ. We are looking forward to our wedding next fall!

Mason Thompson I will be graduating from Physician Assistant School in Knoxville, TN in December! Planning to move to Atlanta, Georgia with James Clements, my fiance, and start practicing there, hopefully in Womens Health or Family Medicine.

Also planning on getting married in Fall of 2019, and looking forward to bringing James to the 10 year reunion next May!

Alexandra Wray Powell I graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design with my BFA in Fashion Design on June 2, 2018!! Very exciting!

I was one of 26 students out of around 130 spread across three campuses to be featured in the fashion show held in May in Savannah, GA. Three of the looks from my collection walked in the show!

In late August I moved to Paris to study couture embroidery at Ecole Lesage for a year.

With sadness we share the news that Dr. Hamilton “Peter” W. McKay, Jr. died peacfully at home on Saturday, November 24 of progressive lung failure.

Peter served on the Chatham Hall Board of Trustees from 1972 to 1978 and was a firm believer in the mission of Chatham Hall and a champion of single sex education. In addition to being a former Chatham Hall trustee, Peter was the husband of Lillian “Dee Dee” Lineberger McKay ’48, father of Lili McKay Teigland ’72 and Katherine McKay ’75, grandfather of Anna Sloan ’10, brother of Katherine “Kat” McKay Belk-Cook ’44, uncle to her daughter Katie Belk Morris ’72, and had numerous other Chatham Hall family connections.

In 1978, Peter and his wife Dee Dee established the Lillian Evans Lineberger New Girl Award in honor of Dee Dee’s mother. Peter and Dee Dee remained loyal supporters of the school even after their daughters graduated. In 1989, they were the first recipients of the Peter and Dee Dee McKay Parent Award, established in their honor, given to parents who give leadership to the school.

The pages that follow recognize you - the more than 1,200 individuals who contributed your time and resources to Chatham Hall during the 2017-2018 fiscal year. 2017-2018 Parent Advisory Committee The Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) is a nominated group of parents who serve as advisors to prospective and current Chatham Hall parents. PAC members partner with the Office of Admissions by assisting with outreach to prospective families and welcoming prospective parents at various admissions events. Fitzalan L. Crowe ’99 A member of the Class of 1999, Fitzalan developed a thirst for travel and global connections. She went on to study at Radford and Virginia Tech, earning two degrees in International Relations, and hoped for a career to fund her desire to see the world. Her path led to humanitarian and social responsibility work, landing her in DC for nearly six years. But, something was missing.

Fitzalan had been involved in athletics at Chatham Hall, and she flourished in her writing classes. So, in 2007, she decided to take the leap into public relations work in international sports.

“I’d grown up around bike racing, I played sports at Chatham, but I never dreamed I could work in men’s international sports, let alone as both an American and a female.”

She worked her way up to becoming the Senior Director of Public Relations of Team Novo Nordisk, the first all-diabetes professional cycling team. She’s based in Belgium as one of only a handful of women in the world in her line of work. Her advice for current students: “Trust your intuition. Worry less and have more confidence.

Say yes to opportunities no matter the pay or the travel requirement. Take risks and heed the lessons they teach.”

Fitzalan is incredibly proud of Chatham Hall. “Chatham is building even stronger female leaders than ever before. I love how the school prioritizes positive female role models through the Leader and Writer in Residence programs.” She attends events (including her upcoming 20th reunion) and makes an annual gift. And in 2016, Fitzalan decided to include Chatham Hall as a beneficiary of her assets, joining the Esto Perpetua Society.

“I got to attend through financial aid, and would not be where I am without Chatham Hall. It’s my duty and my honor to pay it back and pay it forward to create the global leaders of the future. Of all the

places I can give, I believe my gifts make the most impact at Chatham Hall.”
