a chat with the rector In this issue, we share the remarks of Rector Suzanne Walker Buck which were delivered on May 4th at the Alumnae Association Annual Meeting. Rector Buck shares her reflections on the past five years. Buck speaks to the characteristics of Chatham Hall girls today and shares examples of their enthusiasm and empathy. She talks about the institution and its recent reaccreditation.

Throughout this issue you will see evidence of the initiatives which have been undertaken in service to the goals set forth in the strategic plan “Empowering Girls to Better the World.” Rector Buck joined Chatham Hall in 2014 and will be moving to a new school at the end of the academic year. We thank Mrs. Buck and her family for their engagement in school life and demonstrations of leadership as we wish them well in their next adventure.

’m often asked to describe Chatham Hall. Words fail to depict the majesty of the campus or the magnificence of the connection that binds members of our community to each other and to the world at large. I have difficulty describing the feeling of spirit that is experienced immediately upon arrival to campus. And by spirit I mean that which is felt through the joy, enthusiasm, and energy that our girls (students and alumnae) exude, and Spirit, a transcendary force and entity that breathes life and meaning into that which we do and are.

A few years ago a videographer was on campus filming an admission acceptance video. He interviewed a number of girls asking what Chatham Hall meant to them. A ninth grader shared “Chatham Hall is like a magical fairy island.” Stunned, as this is not a typical response that one gets from adolescents at boarding schools, he asked her to tell him more. The student responded something akin to “Chatham Hall is a place like nowhere in the world. We can pursue our passions, live with our friends, and exchange opposing ideas while respecting one another. We also get to dress up a lot in costumes.”

If you have yet to spend quality time with our girls, please make it a priority to do so. Our students are remarkable. How engaged they are with others and with ideas. Their thoughtfulness, empathy, and intelligence continue to amaze me.

Strategic Envisioning

We began this school year with a workshop with school luminary Grant Lichtman. Mr. Lichtman led our students through a full day of exercises utilizing themes of our strategic plan Empowering Girls to Better the World and using a framework of the United Nation’s Strategic Development Goals. In groups, girls envisioned new offerings for Chatham Hall as well as the value propositions for that which we currently do.

Grant Lichtman, who has toured hundreds of schools throughout the country, shared that he had never seen students so engaged, productive, and insightful as the Chatham Hall girls.

Our girls took their vision plans beyond what had been seen at any school. One of these is the creation of a global diploma for girls who immerse themselves in international experiences, take courses rooted in global topics, and who write a thesis paper. Another is a program of life preparation where our students will learn to do everything from change a tire on the car, to learn about strategic financial investment. There is a pilot class in entrepreneurism which we currently refer to as Turtle Tank. Our fourth program is one in which girls will have on campus access to a Maker Space where they can engineer and fabricate products.

Our Girls

While the intellectual gifts of our girls remain impressive, it is their empathy that I value most. Many of you have heard me speak previously on this topic. To me empathy is key to everything. Whether it is civilly acknowledging the perspective of another, even if one

We see our girls demonstrating empathy through the questions they ask in class, through participation in social justice initiatives, and through the extension of thoughtfulness to others. This year our girls initiated a meals on wheels program in which they visit with and bring dinners to designated congregants of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. This outreach within the local community has been received with the greatest appreciation.

I am incredibly proud of the empathy demonstrated by the Class of 2019.

These girls worked together and with their families to raise funds for the renovation of two newly purchased homes on Halifax Road that soon will house faculty members. The girls decided to name one of these buildings in honor of Mr. John Henry Waller.

Appreciative of his many years of service (nearly 65) and of the compassion, humility, and thoughtfulness he demonstrates on a daily basis, the girls wanted to name a space that evokes the sense of home that Mr. John Henry Waller has created for them during their time at Chatham Hall.

Reaccreditation

Chatham Hall is in a position of unprecedented strength. This year we underwent the accreditation process through the Virginia Association of Independent Schools. Every 10 years, independent schools must undergo an extensive year-long process of self-reflection and reporting. This culminates in a 3-day evaluation process in which leaders from other schools visit campus, meet with constituents, and assess our institutional progress. I am elated to share that Chatham Hall was commended in numerous areas including: impressive character of student body, strength of execution of strategic plan, excellence of efforts for

does not agree, or understanding the “why” behind a decision or action, it is from empathy that we ground our girls with the foundation to address the challenges that they will face in a rapidly changing world.

Chatham Hall Earns Prestigious VAIS Reaccreditation On May 23, 2019, Chatham Hall received official reaccreditation from the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS). Founded in 1973, VAIS is the leader in advancing and advocating for independent school education in Virginia. The VAIS accreditation program is one of a select few recognized at the international level through the International Council Advancing Independent School Accreditation (ICAISA). VAIS also is recognized and approved by the Virginia Board of Education through the Virginia Council for Private Education (VCPE).

“Parents can be sure that when choosing a VAIS-accredited school for their children that the school has been through an intense period of self-reflection and evaluation which strengthens the entire institution,” said Betsy Hunroe, Executive Director of VAIS. Every 10 years, independent schools must undergo an extensive year-long process of self-reflection and reporting. It is an undertaking involving comprehensive self-study, including input from all school constituents.

A team of peer evaluators from VAIS member schools spends several days on campus reviewing the self-study report, documentation, and curriculum; meeting with administrators, trustees, students, parents, and teachers; and observing campus life. The team concludes the in-depth visit with a detailed written assessment. The finalized report is then submitted for accreditation approval by the VAIS Board of Directors.

Student Experience: Residential Community, Academics, and Signature Programs

CHATHAM HALL DEDICATES WALKER BUCK WING During Reunion Weekend, the Chatham Hall Board of Trustees dedicated the 2018–2019 reopening of Yardley dorm in honor of Rector Suzanne Walker Buck.

The gift celebrates Rector Buck’s significant contributions to improving student and faculty housing, creating updated community spaces, increased enrollment, care for residential community, and connection to the community at large. Mrs. Buck has been active in the Chatham community forging relationships to strengthen the school’s Episcopal roots with Emmanuel Episcopal Church, partnering with Hargrave Military Academy, and generally enhancing Chatham Hall and Town of Chatham community relations.

The naming of the Walker Buck Wing was made possible through the generosity of alumna Penelope “Penny” P. Wilson ’41 P’67. In honor of Rector Buck, Wilson was pleased to sponsor the renovation of Yardley dorm by naming the residential floor “Walker Buck Wing.” It includes ten dorm rooms plus a faculty apartment and community spaces. An installment in Yardley indicating the new name will be placed above the entry door to the wing.

Board of Trustees chair Sarah Monarchi Longpré ’84 led the dedication ceremony and unveiling of the new recognition installment at the entry of Walker Buck Wing, and after an emotional and heartfelt response from Rector Buck, Chaplain Ned Edwards closed the ceremony in prayer.

Programmatically in the past five years, we have bolstered our offerings. With a focus on student experience, we created an academic support program, expanded emotional wellness offerings, hired an Assistant Director of Inclusion, and ensured greater faculty participation in the residential and athletic programs.

Also within this timeframe we have made significant renovations to campus spaces.

It was with incredible excitement that we re-opened the dorm above Yardley Hall. We purchased the faculty residences on Halifax Road. The Well received a beautification that is absolutely stunning and creates a space for community connection. Walkways, stairs, gardens, paths, all included in a Master Campus Plan and a Tree Framework Plan, have received love and attention. An impressive front entrance now welcomes guests to our grounds. These differences enrich the experience of our community and also boost our position in the ultra competitive enrollment landscape. They indeed lay the groundwork for exhilarating initiatives in the future.

The Outlook

While Chatham Hall is extremely well poised, it is imperative to note the market outlook for boarding schools is far from rosy. Over the past 15 years, boarding schools have seen a decline in domestic applications.

Statistically, small schools, single sex schools, and schools in rural locations are at greatest risk for closure. Sadly, we find ourselves in each of those categories. And yet, within the past five years Chatham Hall has been able to successfully buck the negative trends within our industry, but we need your continued help. Talk about Chatham Hall to friends, family, and organizations. Take to social media in constructive ways. Speak to the positivity of a Chatham Hall experience. Share our videos. Create a buzz about the deeds and accomplishments of our students,

It is clear that Chatham Hall girls of all ages make an impact wherever they are and I am grateful for the positive impact you have made upon our school. The classes who are gathered here today care deeply about Chatham Hall. You have exhibited this through your presence as well as through your actions. I am grateful for members of the 5th reunion class who have been instrumental in the creation of the first ever reunion forum on inclusion and identity at Chatham Hall.

Competitive Position: Enrollment and Philanthropy

Enrollment has grown by over 35 students or 27% since fall 2014. We’ve added $2.7 million in tuition revenue while also working to make Chatham Hall financially accessible to all families of mission appropriate girls.

Tied to this we have worked diligently to create an equitable experience for all of our girls as members of our community.

In the past five years, donations to Chatham Hall have been in excess of $16 million dollars. We are humbled by the bequests that have been received during this time. One of these came from the estate of Josephine McFadden. Josie lived a life characterized by modesty and simplicity and yet her gift in excess of $1.5 million has had enormous impact.

Gifts like Josie McFadden’s allow Chatham Hall to grow the school’s endowment. Over the past five years we have been able to decrease the draw taken each year (currently at a 10 year low) while also spend strategically to fortify our buildings and grounds. We are compelled to serve as committed stewards of the school’s financial resources.

Alumnae Engagement

I also remain appreciative of every alumna who is here today. Your presence is meaningful. It demonstrates appreciation for the school and for one another. It also models for our girls the power of relationship to one another and to place.

Another marker of engagement is philanthropy.

Congratulations and thank you Class of 1969 for your exceptional 50th reunion gift. Thank you to our Oak Circle members for their reliable, consecutive annual gifts. Thank you to everyone who contributed to a class gift and/or to the annual fund. We are on pace to break last year’s Annual Fund record of over $1.08 million in unrestricted gifts.

Tuition does not cover the cost of a Chatham Hall education. Like many schools, we are

dependent on the Annual Fund and our endowment draw to maintain operations. Chatham Hall cannot thrive in absence of the resources that make our dynamic programs possible. Thank you for contributing at the level you can. A gift of any size is a vote of confidence in the school and an investment in its future.

Enhancing the Residential Community

what’s new on campus

In partnership with individual donors, class gifts, and senior family gifts, a number of enhancements have been made to our gardens, grounds, and facilities.

Arcade Steps Over spring break, the arcade steps were rebricked, addressing a longstanding maintenance need and adding to the beautiful aesthetic of the back campus.

As with many of our “care and keeping” initiatives, this project was funded through the generosity of alumnae.

The Class of 1969 sponsored the arcade step renovation and contributed to a permanent endowment fund to support similar ongoing needs of the school.

Gardens During the recent five years, a number of garden projects have been undertaken.

The Rectory gardens were redesigned and replanted, a winter garden was installed, and most recently, the Curtis Jackson Garden was cleaned up and re-planted with help from the Alumnae Council and the Class of 1968. This garden has a history which may date back to Julia Old Pruden.

The Rectory The Rectory foyer, dining room, and living room were updated in recent years. This spring, the patio was enlarged in recognition of its frequent use as a gathering location for students, alumnae, and friends.

Front Entrance A 2011 masterplan identified a list of “small projects” to be addressed. The front entrance was completed in 2016.

Small Drawing Room

Yardley Dorm The renovation of the Yardley dorm occurred over the summer of 2018 with completion in time for the opening of school. For the first time in decades, this facility, inclusive of 10 dorm rooms, a faculty apartment, community restroom and common space have been occupied by students and faculty. The renovation addressed significant deferred maintenance items identified in a facilities assessment. In tribute to Suzanne Walker Buck and her commitment to enhancing the residential community experience, alumna Penelope “Penny” Perkins Wilson ’41 P’67 sponsored the renovation.

The renovated dorm will be renamed “Walker Buck Wing.”

The Well In partnership with generous alumnae, the school has been able to revitalize its most visible and frequented public spaces. The renovation and redecoration of the Small Drawing Room paved the way for the renovation and redecoration of the Well. The Well installation occurred just in time for Reunion 2019. The Small Drawing Room was completed in 2015.

Faculty Housing Through the generous support of a Chatham Hall alumna, the school was able to purchase two additional faculty houses on property contiguous to the school. The home renovations were completed with the support of private donors and the Class of 2019 senior families. The senior families raised enough to name one of the houses and asked the seniors to weigh in on the name.

The Class of 2019 seniors elected to honor John Henry Waller, a Chatham Hall employee of almost 65 years.

Forging Community Relations

Emmanuel Episcopal Church On May 19th, 2019 Emmanuel Episcopal Church recognized Suzanne Walker Buck and her family for strengthening the relationship between the school and the church. Suzanne, Johnny, and Halsey are pictured here with Becky Crites, Assistant Chaplain for Episcopal Identity, Chatham Hall and Priest-In-Charge, Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Following the regular service, a reception was held in honor of the Buck family.

Community Meal Delivery Throughout the school year, faculty and students at Chatham Hall have delivered meals to members of the local community. Every Tuesday, a list of those in need was sent to the school, to-go meals were prepared in Yardley, and faculty and students delivered the meals to local residents.

Alice Overbey Award On September 25, 2018 Chatham Hall celebrated Lee-Yardley Day and honored Charles Williams of M&W Flower Shop with the Alice Overbey Award. This award is given to an individual from our community who demonstrates outstanding commitment and service to Chatham Hall.

Holi Festival, Color Run, and Front Porch Night with Hargrave Military Academy Chatham Hall and Hargrave have fostered a spirited and connective community relationship. On April 27th, 2019 the Chatham Hall Girl Up and Bollywood Clubs hosted a festive 5-K race through campus. With neon-colored powder greeting runners at various intervals, this gave new meaning to a “fun run�. Afterwards, participants and spectators from Hargrave and Chatham Hall enjoyed henna, lawn games, music, and a cook-out on the front lawn!

Pittsylvania Pet Center The Pet Center is the intake shelter for stray and owner surrendered animals in Pittsylvania County. Weekend trips to the Pet Center offered our girls the opportunity to walk and care for the animals who were waiting to be adopted.

In turn, our girls benefited from a stressrelief “pet therapy” session with dogs and bunnies during exam period in the spring.

125th Charter Day In honor of the 125th Anniversary of the Charter for Chatham Episcopal Institute, now Chatham Hall, resolutions were presented

by The Honorable William Pace, Mayor of the Town of Chatham, (pictured with Suzanne Buck), The Honorable Les Adams, Delegate, Virginia House of Delegates 16th District (pictured with Mrs. Adams, student acolytes Cheney Knight ’19 and Anne-Meadors Wall ’19, crucifer Caroline Slicer ’19, and Suzanne Buck), and The Right Reverend James Magness, Bishop Pro Tempore of The Diocese of Southern Virginia. Following the chapel service, the church congregation joined the school community for formal seated dinner.

Emmanuel Episcopal Church 175th Anniversary The Chatham Hall Community was invited to celebrate with Emmanuel Episcopal Church on May 5th on the occasion of the 175th Anniversary of the founding of the church. Chatham Hall students participated in the service, the St. Mary’s choir gave the anthem, and the Chatham Hall community members sat in the wing beneath the stained glass window which pays tribute to the school.

Georgia Bennett ’67 A true advocate of education and supporter of nonprofits, Georgia Bennett ’67 has made a profession of helping others. She’s had a long history working in education while volunteering for nonprofits. While living in Philadelphia, Georgia started her own consulting firm, Bennett Educational Resources, wrote and published “Understanding American Schools,” and was a member of the Junior League of Philadelphia. As a member of the Junior League, she operated an awareness group called “How to Prevent Alcoholism Among Women on College Campuses.”

After 20 years of building and successfully operating Bennett Educational Resources, Georgia sold the company and retired. Then she began volunteering with Planned Parenthood of Southern New Hampshire. She also volunteered with the Museums of Old York in York, Maine becoming Board Chair and serving for six years. Now Georgia focuses on helping the elderly navigate the steps in their medical lives like moving into assisted living communities, nursing homes, and hospitals.

Georgia’s life has been filled with helping others. She credits much of her inspiration and drive to her family and Chatham Hall. Georgia has been a supporter of the school for over twenty years. When asked why she gives back, “I

give because I continually see the amazing accomplishments of Chatham Hall women. It inspires me, and if you’re grateful for the education you received, pay it forward.

‘To whom much is given, much is expected.’ Chatham Hall was a place that provided me a wonderful education and where I met fascinating people and built wonderful relationships.”

Georgia has been a loyal supporter of the Annual Fund for many years. Chatham Hall is truly appreciative of her and all she does and continues to do to empower girls to better the world.

Isabella Hubbard ’19 was named Reserve Champion at the IEA National Competition this spring.

The Riding Program boasts a year of great accomplishment. The IEA Team finished seventh out of eighteen qualified teams at the Zone 3 Championship.

Individually, Isabella Hubbard ’19 traveled to the National Finals where she ended up Reserve National Champion in Intermediate Equitation on the Flat and placed eighth in Intermediate Equitation over Fences. Outside of IEA, Hailey Johnson ’19 placed fifth in the Southwest Virginia Hunter Jumper Association Equitation Finals aboard CH’s Royal Step.

The Varsity soccer program had an amazing team this year full of both young talent and veteran players. Despite injuries and illness, the team fought hard in every single match.

The team quickly came together as a team and trusted each other on field, something that was really magical to watch. The team had two players make it to the second team all-conference, Emily Grass ’19 and Delali Som-Pimpong ’19.

Chatham Hall’s 2019 Lacrosse team had a remarkable season of growth. Led by coaches Casey Brown, Johnny Buck, and Keely Criddle and captains Cheney Knight ’19 and Alice Strawn ’19, the team had a season of constant improvement, culminating in a victory at our final game.

Louise Strawn ’21 was the team’s statistical leader with the most goals scored, highest draw control, and a place on the BRC AllConference team. As the season came to an end, the team said goodbye to seniors Cheney Knight, Lily Porter, Alice Strawn, Anne-Meadors Wall, and June Zhang.

In December, the Tutu Turtles Robotics team competed in the Christiansburg qualifier and received the Design Award. In January the Turtles traveled to Charlottesville, Va for the Central FTC Qualifier.

Facing off against teams from throughout Virginia, Chatham Hall won each of their five matches in the morning. Hanako Ricci ’20 drove the robot while Quiana Rodriguez ’21 operated the robot’s arms. The two were assisted by Claire Carmody ’19 as team Coach, Janie Leung ’19 as Pit Captain, and Camille NealHarris ’21 as team strategist. For their outstanding efforts, the team finished 5th in a field of 36 teams.

Over two weeks in February, the community was treated to two outstanding displays of the performing arts at Chatham Hall.

The winter dance troupe offered a wide-ranging exploration of the voices and influence of women throughout the history of dance entitled “HERstory.” The performance featured pieces covering the gamut of dance styles, with each focusing on a historical dancer or choreographer who brought that style into popularity.

Congratulations to Anna Song ’21 on her contest-winning painting, “Rise,” being included in the publication “Celebrating Art” sponsored by “Celebrating Art” and Blick Art Materials.

Following the outstanding dance performance, the cast and crew of the musical offered their winter’s work with an outstanding run of “Next To Normal.” The musical tells the story of a family struggling to deal with the loss of a member and tackles the difficult topic of mental illness and treatment, but not without moments of levity to offer insights for the audience. Under the direction of Mira Alpers ’19, the cast brought this challenging script to life through their adept performances, while the crew moved flawlessly to put on the show.

As the school year came to an end, Chatham Hall had the chance to enjoy outstanding performances from the arts community with thematically-connected dramatic and dance productions. Known collectively as “The Clothesline,” the spring dance and theatre troupes explored the complex emotional relationship between women and clothing. Dancers put on a show entitled “All Dressed Up And…,” featuring both solo and ensemble explorations of the topic, while the Spring Theatre Collective put on a production of Nora Effron’s “Love, Loss, and What I Wore.”

Visual Arts Head Susan Morley applied to and was accepted into the NEH Summer Institute for Teachers “From Mesa Verde to Santa Fe: Continuity and Change in the Pueblo World.” The program runs from June 30 to July 20 during which time Susan will share a hogan with other institute participants. While in and around Mesa Verde, teachers from all over the country will study and investigate the history of the Pueblo peoples, beginning in the 13th century A. D. when they depopulated Mesa Verde.

global and pilot programs Student Travelers Explore India on Spring Break Trip As part of our global citizenship initiative, seventeen students and faculty traveled to India for an incredible journey which provided the group with many opportunities to interact directly with Indian students and peers.

Throughout the trip, the group visited a number of cultural and historic landmarks, including the Taj Mahal, the Red Fort, and UNESCO world heritage site, Qutb Minar. The group also had the chance to spend time at Pardada Pardadi Educational Society, where students had the chance to meet and connect with the girls attending the school. Over the three days spent at the school, Chatham Hall students taught an elementary school class, learned local dances, and visited the homes of their Pardada Pardadi peers.

When reflecting on the experience, chaperone Dr. Erin McHugh said, “The whole trip was wonderful! It was so different from the United States, and the girls fully embraced the new culture. We visited centuries-old forts and temples, and the Taj Mahal was even more beautiful in person than I could have imagined. The girls loved celebrating Holi, the festival of colors, and spending three days at Pardada Pardadi, an all-girls school focused on educating students from rural areas. The girls quickly bonded with the students and were completely blown away by their generosity and enthusiasm for learning.”

PILOT PROGRAMS As a result of the all-school workshop with education guru Grant Lichtman, four pilot programs were developed by combined student/faculty committees to be introduced in the 2019–2020 school year. The programs are: Life Skills Chatham Hall girls are extremely prepared for college, but also need some basic skills for living in the 21st century. Life Skills speaks to this need by offering short courses in areas both practical and complex, such as personal finance, mental health and self-care, auto maintenance, relationship building, nutrition, and other student interests.

Maker Space As a resource for classrooms, entrepreneurial endeavors, and creativity, a dedicated Maker Space will be developed where tools such as laser printers and cutters, 3D printers, screenprinting, Cricut machines, and woodshop tools will be available for student learning and use.

Global Scholars Recognizing the wonderful foundation Chatham Hall has already laid for global experiences, this program combines existing course work in history, languages, multiculturalism, travel, experiential education, and extracurricular activities to focus on global interests. A global competency capstone course senior year will produce a major paper integrating all experiences and result in a special recognition on a Chatham Hall diploma.

Turtle Tank Taken from the name of the popular show “Shark Tank,” this program seeks to help girls increase their knowledge and ability in entrepreneurial business endeavors.

A combination of classroom and extracurricular program, girls will learn business skills, develop business plans, and ultimately pitch their ideas to a panel that may, or may not, invest in their businesses with partial financial benefit for Chatham Hall.

The Polly Wheeler Guth ’44 Leader in Residence program provides an exceptional opportunity to learn from women who shape the world—culturally, socially, artistically, and politically. Hearing their stories, their ideas, and their voices provides a remarkable window through which our girls can begin to envision their own futures.

Leader in Residence Ann C. Phillips, Retired Rear Admiral and former Chief of Naval Operations’ Climate Change Task Force, visited Chatham Hall January 16 and 17 as the 2018–19 Polly Wheeler Guth ’44 Leader in Residence.

Freshman Leader in Residence Every year, the Freshman Leader in Residence program brings inspirational women to work with the freshman class to help them learn to collaborate, organize events, and become closer as a class.

Academic Dean Martha Griswold noted of her selection, “Admiral Ann Phillips’ naval career and subsequent interest in climate change as it pertains to national security demonstrate to Chatham Hall students how one can work hard and effect change to provide a better life for others as well as create an interesting life for oneself.

Ms. Phillips’ interests speak to Chatham Hall students who worry about the sustainability of the planet. Her distinguished military career also caught the attention of students who look up to strong women who use their voices so well.”

Girls identify what topics are collectively important to them, form a committee to refine the process and work personally with the leader to craft a schedule including meals, tours, workshops, and presentations. The Class of 2022 identified that the qualities most important to them as a group were learning from strong female role models, gaining a better understanding of health and wellness, and receiving advice from an accomplished woman on how to make the most of their high school experience. As such, they chose alumna Mari ArmstrongHough MPH, Ph.D. ’99.

Ms. Phillips started her time on campus meeting with students in large groups—engaging them in dialogue about her work understanding and battling climate change, as well as encouraging discussion about her experience as a Surface Warfare Officer in the United States Navy. During her career, Ms. Phillips played an instrumental role in the development and implementation of the Navy’s adaptation to climate change. She has since focused her energies on climate change and its impact on national security, chairing the Infrastructure Working Group for the Hampton Roads Sea Level Rise Preparedness and Resilience Intergovernmental Pilot Planning Project, convened by Old Dominion University.

Chatham Hall was fortunate to welcome Ms. Phillips to campus as the school adopts the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which include climate action; life on land; peace, justice, and strong institutions; as well as partnerships for the goals. Ms. Phillips’ wealth of knowledge on questions of national security and her work as a private consultant on matters of climate change as they relate to defense of the United States will engender deep and thoughtful conversation on topics in which Chatham Hall students have expressed great interest and which impact their lives on a daily basis.

Dr. ArmstrongHough is a medical sociologist and epidemiologist at Yale University. She is a published author and an international traveler and researcher, studying health disparities in the U.S., Uganda, Ethiopia, Nepal, Japan, and beyond. She is also a current member of the Chatham Hall Alumnae Council.

During her residence on campus, Dr. Armstrong-Hough shared meals with students, taught workshops on social epidemiology, held a session on international travel and networking, and gave a keynote address.

Doris Kearns Goodwin named 2019–2020 Leader in Residence In its 125th year, Chatham Hall is pleased to announce presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin as its 2019–2020 Leader in Residence. Goodwin will be in residence on campus November 18th and 19th, 2019. Doris Kearns Goodwin is a world-renowned presidential historian, public speaker, and Pulitzer Prize-winning, New York Times #1 best-selling author. Her seventh book, “Leadership in Turbulent Times”, was published in September 2018 and became an instant New York Times bestseller.

Engaging with Others

inclusion and identity

“Reflections on Inclusion and Identity at Chatham Hall”—a forum On Sunday, May 5, alumnae and the school community engaged in a forum and dialogue on the topics related to identity and inclusion. The program was planned by alumnae Dasia Moore ’14 and Deja Flowers ’14 in collaboration with Rector Buck and independent school consultant Trina Gary. Gary shares: “Creating brave and affirming spaces that allow people to share their experiences with others who want to learn and understand is the first step to creating an inclusive school community.” Ms. Gary will continue her work with Chatham Hall into the coming school year. The community of alumnae, students and faculty was able to engage in candid and authentic dialogue around shared experiences and aspirations for the school.

The forum provided the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue as well as to review the advancements made in recent years to support inclusivity. Here is a sampling of the initiatives: Students and Faculty: Among the student body, 44% of students identify as persons of color. The school has increased the diversity (as identified as race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation) of our faculty and established the position of Associate of School Life for Community Inclusion. A faculty inclusion committee and a student inclusion committee were established.

Education: The school has engaged thought leaders in areas of diversity to lead workshops with the school community to increase knowledge and skill sets in this area. Experts include such individuals as Dr. Julie Mencher (understanding transgender identity), Dr. Herndon of UNC-G (communication and relationship building), in addition to Trina Gary.

Mentors and Role Models: Utilizing the Polly Wheeler Guth ’44 Leader In Residence program and the Writer in Residence program, these luminaries have brought a diversity of perspectives and messages to the community: Reshma Saujani, Gloria Bond Clunie ’71, Rhiannon Giddens, Joyce Harjo and Rachel Simmons.

Students Explore Inclusion and Equality at National Conference In early December six members of the Chatham Hall community attended the National Association of Independent Schools’ (NAIS) Student Diversity Leadership (SDLC) and People of Color Conferences (POCC) in Nashville, Tennessee.

Over the four–day conference, Dean of Students Nicole Brown and Associate of School Life for Community Inclusion Khadija Rahim were in conversation with administrators and faculty from schools across the country at the POCC, while students Camille Neal-Harris ’21, Stephanie Zhang ’20, Kyra Rogers ’21, and Quiana Rodriguez ’21 explored strategies in peer mediation at the SDLC. The concurrent conferences were organized by NAIS with the goal of “equipping students and faculty with knowledge, skills, and experiences to improve and enhance the interracial, interethnic, and intercultural climate in their schools.”

Reflecting on the group’s experience at the conferences, Brown said, “There were no people more inspiring and brilliant than our own students. I was so privileged to listen to them as they found their voices, explored their identities, and discovered their own ability to impact change in our community and the world. I am in awe of these four girls.”

legacy parallels Cousins: Jamie Neal ’04 and Anne-Meadors Wall ’19 What was your favorite place on campus?

Jamie — That’s a toss-up between Mr. Curtis’ Garden and St. Mary’s Chapel. Both offered peace and beauty in unique but complementary ways.

Anne-Meadors — Lacrosse Field Was there a particular Chatham Hall faculty member who influenced you?

Jamie — The entire faculty at Chatham Hall cares so much about the girl as an individual- their success and happiness- that it’s hard to narrow it down, but Alice Cromer and Charlotte Paris were special mentors to me in academics, music, and riding.

Anne-Meadors — Mr. Buck, he has taught me to be more confident in myself and to chase my dreams and he is someone I look up to.

During your time at Chatham Hall did something spark your interest that has led you to your current work?

Jamie — I’ve never pictured myself working in anything other than the medical field and I think that the academics at Chatham Hall helped foster that interest (vet science class!) along with the grit, ethical morals, and humanity that is required in being a good practitioner today.

Anne-Meadors — Helping Mrs. Buck to prepare the vision board for the Well re-design reignited my interest in pursuing interior design in college.

What is your best Chatham Hall memory?

Jamie — I can’t say there’s just one. But when you’ve been a part of Chatham Hall, you know the feeling of never being a visitor or guest- walking onto campus always feels like home and brings back a flood of memories that are cherished for your lifetime.

Anne-Meadors — I have a lot of great memories but my favorite would have to be our first lacrosse win last year. It was the first win since the re-start of the program and it showed how much our program has grown since my freshman year.

What do you miss or think you will miss most about Chatham Hall?

Jamie — The community and the ever-constant support to prosper. Both are attributes that are only intermittently seen in our society, and we as Chatham Hall girls were lucky enough to experience that during a crucial time in our development. The effects certainly reverberate throughout my life, and I remain so grateful for that!

Anne-Meadors — Having a bunch of sisters, meeting people from all over the world, and the traditions.

Jamie Neal lives in Rocky Mount, VA and is an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner who is employed

by HCA Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia. She completed her Bachelor of Science at the University of Virginia and her Masters of Science in Nursing at Duke University.

Anne-Meadors Wall lives in Chatham, VA and will attend Virginia Tech beginning in the fall of 2019.

Anne-Meadors is the Maid of Honor for Jamie’s wedding in June 2019.

We are pleased to announce the creation of the Heritage Society of Alumnae. In this inaugural year, we recognized and honored our alumnae of 50 years or more. Charter members of the Heritage Society of Alumnae are members of the Classes of 1969 and earlier. Each year forward, we will induct a new class of members in honor of their 50th Reunion. At Reunion this year, we inducted those present with a rosette specially created in the school colors of purple and gold. The rosette may be worn proudly at Reunion and other Chatham Hall gatherings around the world to honor and distinguish our Chatham Hall Heritage Society Members.

Reunion Lantern Ceremony The members of the 50th class reunion and the Class of 2019 took part in the Lantern Ceremony in the Meadow during reunion 2019. As part of the 125th celebration, members of this year’s graduating class were also given Heritage Society Rosettes. They wore them for Commencement.

Anne Blodget Holberton ’69

The Chatham Hall Distinguished Alumna Award was established in 2010 to recognize distinguished graduates representing diverse professions and interests. Awardees have made significant, outstanding contributions in their professions and/or demonstrated meritorious public service; embody the characteristics and values of Chatham Hall in their daily lives, such as honor, respect, and integrity; and inspire excellence in others. The 2019 Distinguished Alumna Award was presented to Anne Blodgett Holberton ’69 and Laura Brown Cronin ’72 during Reunion Weekend.

Each recipient shared her experience and wisdom in managing careers in financial services with balancing families and a deep sense of commitment to community. Each tied back her life experiences as being guided by the experiences, values, and friendships formed at Chatham Hall. Two opportunities to engage with these leaders were offered: a “Fireside Chat” was held in conversation with students and a discussion with alumnae was scheduled during Reunion.

Anne Holberton inspired us to be advocates for ourselves, champions for other women we meet along the way, and left us with a quote from E.B. Laura Brown Cronin ’72 White.: I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

Laura Cronin: I first learned the values I hold dear at home, and they were strengthened and reinforced at Chatham Hall. I chose to spend my life with a man who shares those values: honesty, integrity, responsibility, respect, confidence, perseverance, caring for others, and citizenship. These values live in all of us as Chatham Hall girls. No matter where we live or how we have chosen to live our lives. It is why when we meet a Chatham Hall girl in some part of our life that is far away from Chatham, VA…. we have an instant connection….

Students had the opportunity to meet and chat with our distinguished alumnae during reunion weekend.

The Mildred Harrison Dent Award, for that alumna who demonstrates an enthusiastic long-term commitment and devotion to the ideals of Chatham Hall was awarded to Robin Peake Stuart of the Class of 1969.

The Nancy Gwathmey Award for superior skills in fundraising was awarded to Tracy Bartlett Lively of the Class of 1984.

The Boyce Lineberger Award recognizes that alumna who exerts a longstanding influence on the affairs of Chatham Hall.

This year, we recognized Josephine McFadden ’57, posthumously, for her generous spirit and unwavering support for Chatham Hall.

The Ellie MacVeagh Award is for that alumna who best represents the School’s goals for fellow constituents. This year, we were proud to award not one, but two alumnae with this honor. In addition to all they both have done as ambassadors and advocates for the School, for the first time, we recognize alumnae who have given to the Annual Fund every single year since their graduation.

The Oak Circle is a special society of donors who have contributed to the Annual Fund each year for five or more consecutive years.

Julie Johnson and Mary Murrill Oakes of the Class of 1969 are true Oak Circle members. They embody the special verse of the Alma Mater “When the great oak’s leaves are turning, Chatham we return to thee, In our hearts forever burning, Chatham Hall our loyalty.”

Chatham Hall Alumnae Receive Fulbrights Named for the late Sen. J. William Fulbright, the Fulbright program is designed to foster international exchange and cooperation. Over 1,900 Fulbright awards are made to undergraduate students each year, and more than 380,000 awards have been made over the program’s more than 70-year history.

Annika Tice, Chatham Hall Class of 2015 and current senior at Virginia Military Institute, has been awarded a Fulbright grant to teach English in the Ivory Coast.

Tice joins a number of Chatham Hall graduates who have made meaningful contributions to communities around the world through the Fulbright Program and is the first VMI cadet to receive the prestigious award since 2001.

Speaking with a representative at VMI, Tice shared the formative impact of her experience at Chatham Hall, saying, “The opportunities afforded there were limitless.” During her time at Chatham Hall, Tice discovered a passion for education thanks to the caring faculty members and mentors she found in both the classroom and through athletics. She also credits Leaders in Residence like Gloria Steinem and Venus Williams with inspiring her to seek out challenges in her life well beyond her time at Chatham Hall.

Tice will begin teaching in the Ivory Coast this October after graduating from Virginia Military Institute.

Chatham Hall Class of 2015 graduate, Sriya Chadalavada, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to teach English in Malaysia.

Chadalavada recently graduated from Kenyon College in Ohio, where she studied Economics.

In addition to her academic pursuits, she served as the Senior Class President and member of the Academic Infractions Board.

In addition to the Fulbright Scholarship, Chadalavada has also been selected as a recipient of a Davis Peace Project award, a national program which awards grants to grassroots projects designed to promote the social and societal benefit of others around the world. Her project, entitled Promoting Safe and Eco-Friendly Menstrual Practices in Nepal, will begin this summer as she travels to work in-country with healthcare professionals. Chadalavada co-authored the proposal with two other Kenyon students with the goal of establishing a sustainable Women’s Collective that will provide access to feminine hygiene products in the Accham or Baitadi Districts of Nepal.

Chadalavada will begin teaching in Malaysia in the coming year.

charter day Chatham Hall celebrated the 125th Anniversary of the school’s founding on Sunday, February 24, 2019.

The Charter Day was recognized with a chapel service featuring a history of the school, remarks from Rector Suzanne Walker Buck, and hymns performed by St. Mary’s Choir. The chapel service was livestreamed on the Chatham Hall YouTube channel as groups of alumnae and friends gathered around the country to watch and to celebrate with us.

Chatham Hall is blessed to have long-serving employees. In recent years, we have acknowledged the retirements of several individuals who had served the school for multiple decades. Here, we celebrate and thank Wanda Scearce for more than 41 years of service in the Business Office.

She has seen the arrival and departure of six Rectors: Ingersoll, Hagerman, Van Voorhis, Shaw, Fountain, and Buck. In 2003, Wanda received the distinguished service award.

Wanda joined Chatham Hall in July 1978 and will complete her service at the end of the 2019 fiscal year, or upon the completion of the audit, whichever comes last! During her tenure, Wanda has kept meticulous financial records for the school. She has carefully recorded, documented, checked and rechecked school figures. The adding machine is her best friend. Former CFFO Ron Merricks noted that “Wanda has guarded the Business Office like Fort Knox.”

Janey Odell Kate Bulkley ’77 saw the devilled egg carrier in the Chatham Hall Reunion Legacy Scholarship auction and thought of Janey who is a whiz at devilled eggmaking. Janey is thrilled. She makes devilled eggs every Sunday when all her family is visiting! 

just before I turned 91. I play games every day: Bridge, Bingo, Canasta’s Hand and Foot, Bunco, and MahJong, and I do crossword puzzles when otherwise idle - the easy ones that make me feel smart.

Nancy Howland Washburne I am happy and well. My younger son finally married his dear friend and he, Seth, and Jae spoil me. I live with my granddaughter Sarah and her daughter Elena in the Dallas area, while Ellie and her husband returned to Michigan to live where they grew up and are happy.

Louise Erdman Larsen I’m continuing my custom fashion design business creating one-of-a-kind outfits from unique fabrics. This year my new project is to make baby clothes for a grandson using environmental fabrics created in patterns of wood planks and outdoor vistas.

Adelaide Comstock Roberts I’ve moved and I’m happy in my new location living near one of my sons.

Penelope Kenney Partlow I have the great joy of seeing Hope Rogers Metcalf ’38 occasionally during the summer in Northern New York and seeing Sally Shoemaker Robinson ’49 several times a week as we live in the same retirement community where we both serve on the flower committee.

Ann Cochran McCandless I just returned from Woodstock, VT, where my granddaughter Annie was

married. Rehearsal dinner at Simon Pierce and the reception at the Woodstock Inn. The weather cooperated and although it was cold there was no snow storm and the entire family came. It was truly a wonderful occasion. My other granddaughter is at the University of Illinois Veterinary School, and stays with me when she travels to school and for short vacation times. She comes with her dog in tow who is very friendly and gets along well with my Westie (who sadly died just before Christmas.) I have 6 grandsons, who live all over the place, so I don’t see them as often as I would like.

Susan Fair Boyd and I chat at least once a year, to keep up with what is going on in our lives. My best to all classmates.

Wissie Thompson ’58 will visit us in Florida and I can’t wait to see her. We see each other in Maine and Florida during the year. Maria Gallagher Truslow I am doing well with my new diagnosis of multiple myeloma. I am being treated at Lahey Clinic, Burlington, MA and Dana-Farber, Boston, MA. Lots of support from family and friends! Best to all.

Still in Berkeley, I’m still retired, although my husband continues working in his psychiatric practice. We’re involved in grandchild care of the two youngest. I’m doing a fair amount of writing. Poetry and now fiction.

I’ve published a bunch of poems. The following was recently published in the Tampa Review. I think (hope) most women our age will kinda get it.  MAINTENANCE — from Old French, maintenir: to hold in the hand I know what’s expected. Seriously. I’m on duty here. Watchful, yes.

Simone Crockett While in Costa Rica, the photo below was taken after having ziplined to eight platforms and before going on to the final four. I had never before ziplined; was gigantically relieved it didn’t scare me (I’m afraid of heights but one is totally secure in the harness and the zipline doesn’t go very fast); and was looking forward to the fun of the final four. Also kayaked and hiked and decompressed from New York. I had a marvelous day with Katrina Watson last fall. We went to an exhibition of paintings by her friend Kathe Bradford and then to the Tenement Museum (which I had never been to). With trepidation, Katrina agreed to return to midtown on the subway. 

Susannah W. Smith The Montera, an assisted living and memory care facility, is managed by MBK, a Japanese company which believes in providing quality care. I moved here mid-December. I love it here. Good food and peacefulness. I’m still playing the piano (but frustrated my arthritis limits how much I can play), and I’m still painting. Good life!

Ann Davenport Mavroleon Dixon Whew! Almost missed the deadline which, despite all attempts to train it out of me at Chatham Hall, seems to be a permanent character fault! Here, we are recuperating from “Art for Youth London” which went on in the Mall Galleries last December and raised over £91,200 net [$120,384] for the charity UK Youth. Gross sales for artists exceeded £133, 900 [$176,748]- so the event was good for young people; good for artists; good for all the people who came and enjoyed themselves (and, most importantly, good for me in keeping my little day job as organizer!!!) My daughter Caitlin has been amazing as Creative Director. Everything is starting up all over again for the exhibition dates of 11th, 12th and 13th December 2019; and we would love some Chathamites to visit the exhibition if they are in London at that time. As we go to press we have learned news of Ann’s passing.

Judy Carter I am honored to be serving on Chatham’s Board of Trustees and I can assure you the school and students are electrifying. Just talking to the students about their goals and aspirations is mind boggling, and their enthusiasm about the school is heart warming. If you have a chance to visit the campus I highly encourage you to do so. It will make you even prouder to be a Chathamite.

Mary Michael I spent a week with Leslie Fenn Greshon in New York and Reinbeck.

It was a wonderful way to catch up. We took a trip to the Amazon and Machu Picchu a few years ago. She has been traveling on Overseas Adventure Travel since. We met Gwen Macrae Pfeifer at a lovely botanical garden. She spends a fair amount of time in Laguna Beach with her daughter. My husband and I are going to New Mexico at the end of April which we have long wanted to do, headquartering in Albuquerque.

Enjoying tennis for fun, “gentle” yoga to keep my various joints in working order, and volunteer work. I have three grandchildren in college, one on her way and they are spread all over the place.

Sounds like the usual, very enjoyable retirement life. We feel very lucky to be in Santa Rosa, despite the fires. I believe none of the three of us are contributors so thought I’d fill in a little.

Jill Sedlmayr MacMillan treated me to a lovely day at Lake James on the way home. They’re all doing great! Margie and I try to meet in Chapel Hill, NC on our way up to Chatham for Alumnae Council meetings each fall and spring and have enjoyed getting classmates together for lunch (Nancy Hanes White, Jane Upson Hubbard, Nancy Ruark, Edie Patterson Cates and Mia Bray). We missed Mia the last trip but Jill Sedlmayr MacMillan made the trip from Lake James to join us. Life is good and busy here in Charlotte. My children and 5 grandchildren (ages 8 to 21) are healthy and happy. Not much other news to report so I hope you’ll include some of yours on the next go-round.

Muffin Dalton Grant Hi, Everybody! I’ve now completed two cycles as our class agent and have really enjoyed catching up with many of you at our 50th reunion and others of you through Facebook and still others as I travel. I can’t tell you how much fun it has been serving on the Alumnae Council with Margie Hastings Quinlan and now Lynn Kitson Williams. I don’t think I had seen either of them in years - Margie certainly not since graduation!

And I think our reunion showed that Chatham girls really enjoy being back on campus together. I hope you took advantage of a Charter Day Event on February 24th if there was one near you.

Here in Charlotte we had a wonderful event, watching the celebration livestreamed from St. Mary’s Chapel and singing the Alma Mater (with tears, of course!) Shiela Wood-Navarro, Katherine Hallowell Noyes and I had a nice visit and lunch (our 2nd annual!) in Knoxville, TN last summer and

Muffy Dent Stuart Life is good and busy. Can hardly believe we had our 50th in May 2018. What a wonderful time picking up right where we left off!! Lots of time for us to be together and enjoy memories. We were able to give our reunion gift to restore and maintain Curtis’ Garden, with our 1968 graduation class gift of the statue of Alice in the middle. We will be able to grow it as the years go by and celebrate a special time and place which we love.

I hope classmates will return the first weekend in May this year to celebrate the 125th and pick up where we left off in 2018. 

Margie Hastings Quinlan Our family welcomed Anne Quinlan Tomlinson (Annie) in August 2018 (pictured below). She’s great fun & adorable! Six classmates joined me in Chapel Hill in September. In January we spent a snowy week in Steamboat Springs, CO with Annie and her mom, Katie. Annie was rolling over, chuckling and working on her raspberries - so funny! She’s an adorable little bundle who makes grandparenting delightful.

Ann Watson The best things in my life are my family, especially my daughter Emily and granddaughter Samara who is five years old. She spends time at my house every week. She loves stories, superheroes, nature, and baking. She’s become quite the baker. Of course I think she’s awfully clever. I continue to work on my family history as well as taking genealogy clients. I'm looking forward to our 50th Class Reunion in May! 

Ninna Fisher Denny Carolyn Davenport and I had a meeting in February to talk about Chatham. I am thrilled about Lyn’s profile in the Chat. She is testament to another successful Chathamite! Helen Mirkil This spring Brian and I are moving from the suburbs of Philadelphia to Wilmington, NC, where both Eddy and Drew live with their families (six grandchildren, ages 15 to 3). My sister Kitty also lives in Wilmington as does her daughter Anna. Such blessings! Our new home is in a beautiful community called Carolina Bay at Autumn Hall.

Brian has Parkinson’s but published his third memoir last May. He’s still writing for blogs and making photos and videos. I launched a new painting website, helenmirkil.com. So come see us! Brian and I have set up our studios in Wilmington in a community of 52 artists -- the ArtWorks. It’s an exciting adventure! I’m also hoping we’ll be at my Chatham 50th Reunion!

Julie Cleveland Moving to very rural Maine continues to be the best decision ever! Despite a very hot summer and now into winter with no white Christmas and a frozen well for 3 days on my birthday - we love it. So many new friends and when you live in a small town, you are welcome to be a part of anything that is of interest.

I continue to do the Holbrook Island Sanctuary Newsletter and am on the board for the Brooksville Historical Society. Life is great! 

dedicated leadership. At the end of 2018 I retired after thirty-plus years as a Family Physician. It was a true privilege to work in such a rewarding career, being closely committed to my patients’ health and sharing in their life journeys.

I am enjoying the new freedom from the schedule of work and am planning a retirement full of other commitments and growth in new endeavors. My husband, Chris will semi-retire at the end of this year and we have grand plans together. Top of the list for now is that I’ve finally been given the great joy of two grandchildren! My son, Peter and his wife Katie Gallagher presented Martin Michael Teigland on January 25 in Minneapolis. Chris and I were able to be there on the night of his birth, and I’m visiting with them as I write this note. My daughter Claire and her husband Bill Stokes were blessed two weeks later with the arrival of Martin’s first cousin, Robert Davis Stokes (Robbie) on February 7, and I was also able to be present. The two little fellows are adorable and I now understand what friends have been telling me - being a grandparent is one of life’s greatest gigs!

Lillian McKay Teigland There have been many changes in my life over the past few months! In late November my beloved father, Peter McKay died at home of pulmonary disease. Shanda Jo Haley Blackmon Just made full Professor of Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, where I practice cardiothoracic surgery, the first female division member ever. I am the president of Women in Thoracic Surgery, on the board of directors for the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, I am the treasurer for the Thoracic Surgery Foundation, and am the treasurer for the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association. I have three children: Jake (14), Sam (14), and Grace (6), and I will be celebrating my 25th wedding anniversary with Matt Blackmon.

Kristin Holland Hello, everyone! I finally have an update worth sharing: I completed my 3-year residency in veterinary radiology and diagnostic imaging at Ohio State University in July 2018. I took and passed our final specialty board exam in September 2018, officially becoming a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology (i.e., board certified veterinary radiologist).

Immediately after completing the examination, we departed for a trip to Europe where we toured Amsterdam, Brussels, and London. Upon returning, Rob and I relocated to northern Virginia, just outside of D.C., where I am working at a small animal specialty hospital.

We are so happy to have completed this last and - I desperately, sincerely hope - final chapter in my many years of professional education. If anyone is in the northern Virginia/D.C. area and would like to get together, please let me know! 

To add to our Hawaiian adventures, we welcomed our third child on February 10, 2019! Aria Annalise was born weighing 8lbs 2oz and is the sweetest addition to the Cales Crew. 

Michelle Thomas Supko Brian and I were thrilled to welcome our third child, Dora Maria, into the world on January 18th weighing 9lbs 3oz. She is deeply loved and we are excited to one day introduce her to our Chatham Hall family! 

Fielden Willmott Swimm On July 21st, I married Brandon Allen Swimm. Tarey Jelks was part of our ceremony in the Maroon Bells, outside Aspen, CO.

Virginia Thomas Harring Steve and I are pleased to announce the birth of our son, Caleb Mark, on February 5, 2018. Caleb is a very happy child, and is always smiling. He is sitting up and rolling over, and getting ready to crawl soon. He is loved by many family and friends, including his aunt, Kate Thomas ’08, and his Jamma, longtime Physics teacher Molly Thomas. 

Taylor McCall I am very happy to share that I was married to John Moore on July 14, 2018, in Blowing Rock, NC. My real sister Laura McCall ’09 was my maid of honor, and my Chatham Hall ’06 sisters Abby Murnick Jones, Sally Norman Wielgus, Rimes McGinn Kirk, Elizabeth Anne McGowin, and Schay Goss Barnhardt were there to celebrate with us. Dr. David Smith (Chatham Hall chaplain from 2002-2010) performed our ceremony. We moved shortly after our wedding to Boston, MA. 

Adele Cornwall I am engaged to be married in December 2019! Lila Nelson Daniel and Chelsea Hermann will be bridesmaids!

Chelsea Hermann I began a new job in January as a Senior Analyst with Tiffany and Co. in NYC working on the Concepts and Collections Product Development team. I will be taking jewelry casting and CAD courses at the Fashion Institute of Technology in the spring. I am especially excited to be a bridesmaid in Adele Cornwall’s Chicago wedding with Lila Nelson Daniel at the end of the year! 

Hannah Early Snodgrass On September 8, 2018, I married the most wonderful man and my best friend, Alex Snodgrass. We met as freshmen at Virginia Tech and we now live in Beaumont, Texas. We were fortunate to have Dr. Ned Edwards officiate our wedding ceremony and my very best Chatham Hall ladies there to celebrate our big day with us!

Mary Kathryn Atkinson ’10 was a bridesmaid and Charlotte Rettberg ’10 served as a ceremony reader, coming all the way from Germany with her boyfriend! We could not have asked for a more perfect day to start our marriage!

Mary Elizabeth Lively I received a grant to travel to the Bahamas in April to present on the economics research that I am doing on the political economy in Guatemala, and why they are stuck in a limited access order even after they transferred from a military dictatorship to a democracy.

I will be presenting at Mercer University on BEAR (Breakthroughs in Engagement, Arts, and Research) Day in late April.

Charlotte Caldwell ’70 A native of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee and a member of the Class of 1970, Charlotte Caldwell has spent her career exploring people and places through writing, research, nature, and photography. “Chatham Hall is where I learned to write and to do research,” she notes. “It was like family for me. You can’t create a bond more powerful than putting girls in a safe place together, where they learn to think with the support they need.”

After graduation, Charlotte attended Middlebury College. “Thanks to Chatham, I breezed through!” She quickly became an installation in the non-profit leadership of her community after graduation. “I was 23 and starting on non-profit boards.

Chatham Hall created in me a thirst for impact. I had the courage to do things I wouldn’t have done otherwise.”

Charlotte’s continued adventures and graduate work brought deep connections in some of the country’s most beautiful natural landscapes. She honed her skills as a writer and photographer, and has since published five books in a vast array of topics. Her fourth book, Kirby’s Journal, published by University of South Carolina Press, is a middle school book about nature, science investigation, and the sense of curiosity and wonder inspired by an urban butterfly garden. Ten of Charlotte’s photographs from Kirby’s Journal were chosen for presentation at the 2010 North American Nature Photographer’s Annual Summit Show, and in 2015 it won a Moonbeam Children’s Book Award bronze medal.

In addition to continued non-profit impact in her local communities, Charlotte intends to return to campus next year for her 50th Reunion. She also supports Chatham Hall through planned giving as a member of the Esto Perpetua Society. Charlotte divides her time with her family between their ranch in Montana and their home in Charleston, South Carolina. When reflecting back on her Chatham Hall experience, she gave advice for current Chatham Hall girls.

“In your day-to-day life, resilience is key. Find ways to work with others toward shared goals, and discover common threads along the way.”
