Dear Friends, The warmer months have arrived, and once again Chatham Hall has been blessed with green lawns, budding trees, and energy reborn. The campus has never looked more exquisite, nor has our school been more excited to share the splendor of our environment.

Toward the end of April we welcomed nearly 200 visitors as part of Historic Virginia Garden Week. Both St. Mary’s Chapel and the Rectory were on display for the public. Girls served as docents and campus ambassadors. How impressed our guests were with the grounds, buildings, and student members of our community.

The weather goddesses bestowed upon us perfect days in which to honor class reunions. How I wish everyone could have attended the phenomenal events of the weekend. The dedication of the new oak tree was certainly a highlight. As we convened in the tranquility of the meadow, we shared prayers, reflections, poetry, and song. There was not a dry eye when the 50th reunion class and this year’s seniors joined together in a lantern ceremony encircling the oak. Isn’t it amazing how nature impacts our sensory experience? I am convinced that when immersed in nature, our sights, sounds, smells, and sentiments are all intensified.

Recently I participated on a panel discussion exploring innovation in education. The audience had screened the documentary Most Likely to Succeed. In the film, educational luminary Sir Ken Robinson posits that schools should not be seen as manufacturers molding students, but rather as gardeners fostering growth. I couldn’t agree more.

This issue of the CHAT celebrates Chatham Hall’s gardens and grounds, and explores our relationships with one another and with nature. May the stories within allow us to connect. May they inspire us to enrich our natural environments and the lives of those whom we hold dear.

This year, as we remember the fallen “Old Oak,” and dedicate a new oak tree, we reflect on Chatham Hall’s expansive splendor, from the great meadow to charming gardens to vegetable gardens, and we celebrate Chatham Hall’s lovers of the land…tree stewards, gardeners, nature conservationists, and more.

A true steward of the environment, Julia Morris Kashkashian ’75 has been a Forestry Program Director with the Peace Corps, has worked for the US Forest Service both nationally and internationally, and currently serves as a Major Gifts Fundraiser for the Nature Conservancy where she has worked for the last 15 years—a mission that she says is easy to advocate for because it is something about which she is truly passionate.

Peggotty Worthington Gilson ’59 dreamed of being an architect from the time she was very small. “I think that my interest in architecture and nature has been with me from the very beginning. My two sets of grandparents had special homes in beautiful places, so I was exposed to both things very early. I would draw aerial perspectives and plans of the horse farms I would own someday, including all the horses. I turned that into a business later in life,” shares Peggotty.

As with a lot of people in Julia’s professional field, conservation is something that began at an early age, perhaps stemming from her mother’s love of nature. “We used to tease my mother and say we were going to get her little business cards that said, ‘plant more trees’ on them because as we would drive around the countryside, she would make comments about people’s yards not having enough trees,” she reflects.

As a child, Julia and her family spent summers and vacations on a farm in Caswell County, North Carolina that has been in the family for many generations. Julia fondly remembers, “roaming around in the woods with my siblings and cousins, fishing, and making ‘fairy dinners’ with acorn caps as teacups, and building lean-tos and pretending we were Robin Hood.”

At Chatham Hall, Julia took advantage of Chatham Hall’s 360-acre campus, walking in the woods, exploring the pastures and trails, and reveling in the beauty of being surrounded by trees. “Maybe we didn’t appreciate exactly why we enjoyed that, but there are all kinds of studies now that show the impact of being in nature on your cognitive facilities. Basically, kids who are exposed to nature learn better and are better academic performers. A study shows that patients who are in hospitals reduce their stay by one day out of ten by exposure to nature—even by simply seeing trees out their hospital room window” she says, adding, “I am delighted that Chatham Hall recognizes and values its physical setting.

The beauty of the campus is something that we all treasure when we leave there, and that we all celebrate when we return. We have traditions, and we have classmates, and we have academic memories, but we always agree that one of the wonderful dimensions of Chatham Hall are the grounds.”

after a long and circuitous route earned her MFA Arch degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Her career specialized in indoor/outdoor residential architecture which embraced the land.

Always an avid gardener and former member of the Garden Club of America, she took the wonderful extension courses at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania, learning the plant material, and cultivating skills that would serve her well in her career as an architect. Her clients allowed her to create terraces, courtyards, and gardens. In one Pennsylvania project, “I ended up changing the client’s driveway on 20 acres so one would experience the land in getting to their home, instead of driving straight in,” shares Peggotty. At her own home on Cape Cod, she carefully considered the placement of her home keeping in mind where the winter winds and summer breezes come from. A protected courtyard faces south, full of winter sun. In planning a garden, Peggotty explains that it is very important to remember there are four seasons to the year: “try to have something interesting in the garden for each season; and to remember to use some indigenous plant material. And you need structure, whether built or plants. A flower bed alone by itself doesn’t have visual strength.”

A woman of many talents, Peggotty is also an artist, and nature is central to her art. A photographer and a painter, Peggotty paints mixed media abstracts full of texture and color, incorporating pieces of her nature photography. After several bouts of cancer, Peggotty has pulled away from architecture to take care of herself, and is dedicating her time to her art.

In light of the recent Oak Tree Dedication Ceremony at Chatham Hall, it is appropriate to share that Peggotty’s memories of Chatham Hall are deeply tied to the stable, riding on trails, and working in the riding ring next to the glorious Old Oak. She shares that, “The Old Oak was symbolic. I especially remember galloping bareback on my favorite horse across the field above the Oak just before graduation.

At the end of the run, my Riding Club friends and I then rested our horses, and, sitting in the field, made daisy chains while talking about what was to come next.”

Nature

has economic value, and, for some people, for decision makers in society, it is important to document that, along with the

spiritual well-being it provides people.

Volunteer in the Gambia. There she worked with people on managing trees and natural resources, sharing information with them on how to manage the land for their benefit as well as for that of the environment—for them, trees and shrubs provided food, shelter, medicine, and fodder for sheep, goat, and cattle. People depended on nature for their livelihood and well-being. “And fast forward to what I am doing now, that’s what the Nature Conservancy is all about today, it’s about the value of nature for people,” she explains.

Julia recommends that we all be curious about the outdoors, “Take a magnifying glass and look at a flower blossom. It’s pretty amazing. Recognize that there are hard sciences associated with nature, but also the social sciences, and the economics of nature are important. Think of the power of trees in a city to reduce heat islands, to lower the temperature as we think about global warming. Or the power of oyster reefs and mangroves to protect against storm surges from hurricanes and severe weather. Nature has economic value, and, for some people, for decision makers in society, it is important to document that, along with the spiritual well-being it provides people.”

Stewarding Trees Robin Hanes ’73, Tree Steward

Robin Hanes ’73 is passionate about trees. In fact, we have Robin to thank for the knowledge that prior to its falling, Chatham Hall’s “Old Oak” was the second largest in the state of Virginia with a circumference of 21.5 feet, a height of 121 feet, and a crown width of 123 feet.

During a visit to Chatham Hall for a Reunion several years ago, Robin visited the Old Oak and suggested that it be measured for Virginia Tech’s Champion Tree Project, “That year that I came to Chatham Hall, the Oak was looking so incredible. And I just said, ‘somebody needs to have this professionally measured and sent to VA Tech to see how it fits in the lineup of Champion trees!’

Someone at the School showed me what Biology Teacher Amy Davis had done in the school gardens with the kids, and I was so impressed. I spoke with Amy and she made a project out of measuring the tree with the kids, and had great success.”

As a member of the Charlottesville Area Tree Stewards, Robin is active in tree related projects in the Charlottesville area. Tree stewards are expected to give volunteer time to the community, whether that is through education, hands-on planting, invasive plant removal, etc.

In the fall, the best time to plant trees, Robin is heavily involved in the Charlottesville Area Tree Steward’s Annual Tree Sale. The Department of Forestry, who sells trees to people at very low prices to encourage forestry in a healthy way, donate leftover bare root trees to the Tree Stewards who “pot them up” and sell them for $5 and $10 each in the Charlottesville City Market.

We are grateful that Robin’s love of trees has carried over to a place that she loves—Chatham Hall. Robin has been instrumental in caring for Chatham Hall’s trees. “When I visited Chatham recently I was so excited to see how big the old trees have gotten. I noticed a Ginkgo planted in front of Pruden in the 1920s, and it’s not a super healthy tree.

It’s leaning over in a funny way, and it struck me that the trees of Chatham Hall needed an arborist to look at them.

Some trees have been there for 100 years, and they are really very special.

We are very lucky that they are doing as well as they are. They are inspiring, really. Everyone loves them. There are some very simple, but not cheap, things to do to take care of old trees. The main thing is to get dead wood out of them.

I worked with the school to get a local arborist to come take care of that. I was just thinking about that Ginkgo, and thought how lucky we’ve been to have the beautiful trees that we’ve had. It’s a special thing to have a tree that will stay there for 100 years. It is so much more exciting when a plant is really healthy and gorgeous.”

“I want to encourage people to plant trees,” said Robin. “It is so amazing to watch them grow and change, and it beautifies the campus. THE TREES

IN CHATHAM’S FRONT CIRCLE ARE POSSIBLY 150 YEARS OLD, AND THE BIG OAK BEHIND THE RECTORY AROUND 175. IT’S A WONDER TO IMAGINE THEM SHADING STUDENTS LONG AGO, JUST AS THEY DO NOW. TREES ARE A LIVING HISTORY. They give us oxygen, clean air, soak up the rain, which evaporates back out as humidity from vast leaf surfaces. This provides more rain. As we have fewer trees, we will have less rain, as well as less wildlife, a full ecosystem with its finely tuned balances. We love trees for more than nostalgic reasons.”

An artist and art therapist by profession, Robin is inspired by nature. Her most recent series of paintings, “The Life of Trees,” includes

Oak Dedication Ceremony On April 15, during Reunion Weekend, the Chatham Hall community processed with bagpipe music to the Meadow, and gathered for an Oak Tree Dedication Ceremony. We honored our fallen “Old Oak” and celebrated the planting of the new Oak with readings, songs, and prayers offered by alumnae, students, parents, and faculty members.

A Lantern Ceremony with the Senior Class of 2016 and the 50th Reunion Class of 1966 and the singing of the Alma Mater concluded a moving ceremony.

a painting of Chatham Hall’s Old Oak. “It was obvious I needed to do a series on trees,” Robin shared, “and it was so scary, because I am emotionally tied to these trees. I wanted to feel like I did them justice. And it ended up being really fun.

I painted “Chatham Oak” in honor of the Oak after it died. It was a tragedy to lose a historic tree that meant so much to so many girls. We had a multitude of events down there, including the New Girl Picnic right in the beginning. We all gathered around this amazing tree, and it just adds something special about the experience of Chatham.”

The oak represents courage and endurance and the protective power of faith. The tree’s noble presence and nurturing habit reassured ancient peoples that, with the good will of their gods, their leader, and their warriors, they could prevail against all odds. The oak offers protection and hospitality without question, although its true rewards are only apparent to the honest and brave. The ancient Celts deplored lies and cowardice.

To be judged mean spirited could result in exclusion from the clan, which was one of the most shameful and most feared of all possible punishments. Like the oak, we would do well to receive without prejudice all those who seek our help, sharing what we have without resentment or reservation. The oak reminds us all that the strength to prevail, come what may, lies in an open mind and a generous spirit. Inflexibility, however, is the oak’s one weakness and the tree is prone to lose limbs in storms. The oak therefore carries the warning that stubborn strength that resists will not endure and may break under strain.

Growing Your Landscape

Robert “Bob” and Kathy Zentner P’16, Hopewell Nursery Bob and Kathy Zentner, parents of senior Ana Christina Zentner ’16, have been pillars in the Chatham Hall Community for the past four years. As members of the Parent Advisory Committee, and parents to Ana Christina, a member of our Interscholastic Equestrian Association Team, the Zentners make the trip from New Jersey to Chatham often!

We are immensely grateful to Bob and Kathy who have so generously enhanced the beauty of Chatham Hall by donating countless shrubs and plants to the School over the years, often using them to “landscape” for horse shows before they make their way to a permanent home on campus. “People have time, possessions, and money that they can offer. We have plants. That is our gift—to beautify the Chatham Hall campus.

Chatham Hall’s gift has been to nurture and educate our daughter for many years,” said Bob.

Colorful gardens, flowerbeds, and expertly crafted potted arrangements decorate every corner of campus, making Chatham Hall a most beautiful place for students and faculty to call home. We thank dynamic duo Maureen Webb (School Horticulturist and Master Gardener) and Jerry Lewis (Grounds Supervisor) for teaming up to keep Chatham Hall’s Gardens and Grounds in beautiful condition.

Both perfectionists and visionaries, Maureen and Jerry have done wonders in maintaining and improving upon Chatham Hall’s campus, a huge undertaking for a team of two. “To see it all come together, with wonderful input from people like Rector Suzanne Buck and Johnny Buck, who appreciate what you are doing so much, it’s very encouraging,” said Jerry. Maureen added that, “Seeing the school’s campus transform over the past ten years to what it is now has been really rewarding. The more we do, the better it looks, and it is a lot to maintain, but it is so nice when people come and comment on how good it looks, and it makes you feel like it’s worth it!”

Maureen and Jerry have been busy preparing for Historic Garden week this year. In April, we had the great pleasure sharing Chatham Hall’s beauty with the Garden Club of Virginia who featured the Rectory and St. Mary’s Chapel (with help from student docents) in their Annual Historic Garden Week Tour. The Rectory, a 1936 copy of the George Tucker House in Williamsburg, hosts more than 1,000 guests each year (including a stay from Eleanor Roosevelt in 1948), and is home to many paintings by notable artists such as Alfred Jurgens, Ethel Cooke, and William Merritt Chase (who once taught Chatham Hall’s own Georgia O’Keeffe 1905). Garden Club members were enchanted by St. Mary’s Chapel’s architecture, acoustics, and one-of-a-kind stained glass windows, especially the St. Francis window, dedicated to a woodpecker who flew into the chapel before its dedication in 1939.

Bob, who thought he wanted to be a forester said, “I went from the idea that I would clear cut forests and produce lumber and paper, to planting one tree at a time through every garden center on the east coast.” This love of the outdoors led Bob to Kathy, “the love of his life,” when they met working at a nursery.

Once married, the couple made the move to New Jersey to help run Hopewell Nursery, an 1800 acre wholesale nursery, established by Kathy’s family in 1988. Currently the Vice President of Sales, Bob has been with the business ever since.

“Every day that I drive through the nursery and see the many employees working together to produce the finest quality plants possible gives me great joy and that fact that we can be a part of their lives makes me extremely proud,” said Bob, adding that “seeing the plants start as a small cutting, and the process that brings it to market, is what I enjoy the most. I guess I am a farmer at heart.”

Learning Inside the Classroom and Out

Small Scale Farming: Can we do it?

One day Ms. Davis took our bio class out behind the gym saying she had a challenge for us and that we could choose whether or not to accept the challenge, which sounds a bit like the beginning of a teen novel. We agreed to try to meet this challenge head on—to have harvestable food for Yardley all three seasons (without using heat) that school is in session. As a class, we researched food plants that grow well in each season, and their growing and harvesting time. Luna Zhu ’17 researched methods to create mini greenhouses over the boxes for the wintertime, and Caroline Daly Penny ’17 and I created the rubric on which Ms. Davis will grade us for our project. We broke up into groups by season to ensure there would always be someone to water, weed, and harvest. We had diagrams and a large calendar to figure out spacing and timing so that we had the right crops at all times, and to keep track of each person’s work outside of class time. In the fall, the arugula— originally planted in that space for Ashley Reed ’14’s Discovery Challenge project on vermiculture—was plentiful. We harvested pounds upon pounds of arugula, and found it sneaking into other boxes. Cilantro has grown really well all three seasons. We struggled with potatoes in the winter, but tried again once the weather warmed up, and they are doing very well at the moment. In the winter we planted kale, and beside the box was a patch of pretty purple leaves that Joaquina Guevara ’17 and I decided to try (do not eat suspicious plants)—it turns out they were mustard greens, and many people in the class discovered a love for them. On one occasion I found a radish all by itself right beside the carrot box. We had not planted radishes. We are currently growing the prettiest lettuce I have ever seen. The leaves are bright green and purple, and sometimes speckled and frilly.

We have started delivering produce to faculty members rather than taking it to Yardley. Our most frequent and most enthusiastic customer is Ms. Simpson who gasps or squeals every time we bring a bag of greens to her classroom! -DELIA IBA N E Z ’1 7

The natural world doesn’t belong only in science classes at Chatham Hall! This year,

English teacher Mary Edmonds and science teacher Amy Davis teamed up on a collaborative SEAD (science, engineering, art, and design) project that brought English and Biology together in Thoreau style journals.

Students used the Book Creator app to create journals taking their lead from Thoreau’s Walden Pond. Girls were tasked with taking time out of their busy schedules to settle in and observe changes in the natural world around them in a chosen sanctuary on campus for 12 weeks— what did they see, smell, notice, what impact have humans had in that space? Alumnae enjoyed hearing about the meaningfulness of this innovative project from Tracy Wang ’17 and Lily Li ’17 during Reunion Weekend.

P ROJE CT: Operation Greenhouse:

Living Outside the Classroom

The opportunity for my class of three to design and sketch a new layout for our biology greenhouse not only incorporates what we are learning in the textbook, but also allows us to use our creativity and apply our knowledge to everyday life. We will be re-designing the greenhouse as a space that is both functional in all the ways we currently use it, and conductive to relaxation and study (tying in social, emotional, and physical health benefits of green plants). The process of requesting funding from Wray Environmental Fund through our grant writing was an experience I would only be able to have at Chatham Hall, and the class is thrilled that our grant was approved! We have already started reorganizing our greenhouse and are very excited to see the whole process come together.

Hopefully we can achieve our goal of making the greenhouse a more usable space for students both during class and leisure time. -J U LI ETTE AL L IATA ’17

Chatham Hall is not only home to flower gardens, but also to a flourishing community garden, greenhouse, and raised beds. Science teacher and Sustainability Club sponsor Amy Davis has masterfully engaged students in sustainability by creating exciting hands-on gardening projects like Experimental Small Scale Farming: Can We Do It? and Operation Greenhouse: Living Outside the Classroom.

AS A PART OF THIS YEAR’S STEAM (Science, Technology,

Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) project, Biology and Sustainability students grew and delivered eight pounds of produce to the dining hall to be used for salads during Reunion Weekend! Purple and gold pansies were also delivered for garnish.

The selections include large bags of mixed lettuces, kale, purple-streak mustard greens, basil, cilantro, nasturtium leaves, and carrots. Given the colors of the purple-streak mustard greens, carrots, and pansies, the class suggested that the salad be called, “Purple & Gold Salad.”

Soil for Life Students, faculty, and parents who participated in Chatham Hall’s signature South Africa Service Learning program during spring break also spent time in a garden through Soil for Life. A Cape Town-based non-profit, Soil for Life trains people in low-cost methods of organic food gardening in an effort to provide fresh, nutritious food for families year round.

GLORIA BOND CLUNIE: 2016 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNA RECIPIENT & WRITER IN RESIDENCE

Award winning playwright, director, and educator, GLORIA BOND CLUNIE ’71 visited Chatham Hall April 15–22, 2016. After being honored as Chatham Hall’s 2016 Distinguished Alumna during Reunion Weekend, and an inspiring address to alumnae and other Reunion guests, Ms. Clunie remained on campus for her tenure as Writer in Residence.

Academic Dean Martha Griswold remarked, “We were so fortunate to have Gloria as this year’s Writer in Residence. It is clear that her schedule, much more extensive than that of previous Writers in Residence, demonstrates her love of Chatham Hall and its students!”

In addition to her engaging and moving keynote address, Ms. Clunie visited classes, led creative writing workshops, and worked with the spring theater class in a staged reading of her play BLU! Ms. Clunie is a founding member of the Playwriting Ensemble at Chicago’s Regional Tony Award winning Victory Gardens Theater where her plays North Star, Living Green, and Shoes premiered. She is also the founding Artistic Director of Evanston’s Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre where she directed scores of productions.

Her other plays include, Sweet Water Taste, SMOKE, Sing, Malindy, Sing!, BLU, Buck Naked, DRIP, Patricia McKissack’s Mirandy and Brother Wind, Bankruptcy, Merry Kwanzaa, Mercy Rising, and QUARK. Her works have been published in the anthologies Seven Black Plays, Reimagining A Raisin In the Sun, and The Bully Plays. They have been work-shopped and produced in a variety of theaters across America including Victory Gardens Theatre, Goodman Theatre, Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre, ETA, Alliance Theatre, Triad Stage, Her Story Theatre, MPAACT, and Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre.

For thirty years, she has been an outstanding creative drama specialist in the acclaimed Evanston District #65 Drama Department, where she served as the Chute Middle School Fine Arts Chair, directed over 100 productions, and developed district drama standards and curriculum.

Ms. Clunie has been recognized for her work in theatre and education by the NAACP, AKA, and DST Sororities, American Alliance for Theatre and Education, and the Vision Keepers. Awards include a Chicago Jeff, a

Children’s Theater Foundation of America Orlin Corey Medallion, a Scott McPherson, a Dramatists Guild Fellowship, Theodore Ward African-American Playwriting Prizes, New York’s New Professional Theater Award, Chicago Black Theatre Alliance Awards, NEA and Illinois Arts Council Fellowships, and the Evanston Mayor’s Award for the Arts.

Last year, Ms. Clunie was an ArtistIn-Residence at Byrdcliffe Arts Colony in Woodstock New York and at 360 Xochi Quetzal Arts Residency, Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico where she completed BLU—a two act drama exploring bullying. In March, BLU was read at The Growing Stage Children’s Theater of New Jersey 2015 New Play Festival and was the featured play in the AATE Playwrights In Our Schools Program at Utah Valley University.

In July, she participated in the 2015 Women Playwrights International Conference in Cape Town, South Africa where excerpts from her play Shoes were presented. Also in July, SMOKE was a part of Dayton Playhouse’s 2015 FutureFest. In August, Buck Naked was performed in Detroit’s 2015 BoxFest, and she looks forward to SMOKE being presented again this September in New Works at Playhouse On The Square in Memphis. Currently, as part of Northwestern University’s American Music Theatre Project, this Northwestern graduate (B.S. Theater, MFA-Directing) is adapting her acclaimed drama North Star into a musical.

Chatham Hall in South Africa During Spring Break, Chatham Hall once again returned to South Africa through our signature service program in Cape Town. Since 2008, one out of four students have travelled to either South Africa or India through our signature programs.

During their time in South Africa, students, faculty, and parents collaborated with teachers and prepared meals at the

Caravelle Primary School; cleared land, prepared and cultivated gardens through Soil for Life (read more about Soil for Life on p. 11), undertook environmental projects at the Cape Town Ostrich Farm, participated in work projects and play activities with children at the Brave Heart Home orphanage, and tutored children at the Steenvliet Primary School.

South Africa travellers had the unique opportunity to visit alumna Susan Hill Ward ’54 and her husband, Rod Ward, at their home in South Africa. Mr. and Ms. Ward, who live in Wilmington, Delaware for most of the year, visited Chatham Hall in the fall when Ms. Ward, an anthropologist and yoga instructor, spent a couple of days in residence during one of our GIRLS Days, which was focused around mindfulness, meditation, and creative expression. She spoke to students about the connections between the spiritual practices of the South African bushmen and the rock art—expressions of their interactions with the spirit world. Girls were also invited to participate in candlelight yoga, with “breath” exercises led by Ms. Ward. It was during a trip to South Africa in 2000 to visit her third daughter (who married a South African) that Ms. Ward grew fascinated with the rock art and tradition of the Bushmen hunter-gatherers, thus combining her backgrounds in anthropology and spiritual traditions, particularly in regards to the astonishing similarities between the Bushmen religion and one of the oldest yoga traditions of India.

Mr. and Ms. Ward are also active garden conservationists. Mr. Ward joined the Garden Conservancy Board of Directors in 2005, is chairman of the Board of Directors of Winterthur Museum and Gardens in Winterthur, Delaware, is a founder of the Winterthur Garden and Landscape Society, and a member of the Asticou Azalea Garden Committee in Northeast Harbor, Maine. He and Ms. Ward have created a woodland garden in Wilmington and are developing a garden in Maine.

Congratulations to the 11th and 12th grade team of students who participated in the annual national TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science) competition, placing first in Virginia for the second consecutive year!

TEAMS is an annual competition for middle and high school students designed to help them discover their potential for engineering. The theme of the 2016 competition was, “Engineering the Tools of Innovation.” Students explored the tools engineers use in areas such as space exploration, effective manufacturing, and microscopy, and this year’s competition included a build and design challenge in addition to the standard test. With the mentorship of the Science Department, students prepared for the one-day competition by meeting weekly over lunch for six weeks.

NAMED 2016–17 LEADER IN RESIDENCE Chatham Hall is pleased to announce Founder and CEO of Girls Who Code, Reshma Saujani, as its 2016–2017 Leader in Residence. The Leader in Residence program is endowed by the Polly Wheeler Guth ’44 Leaders in Residence Fund and brings exceptional female leaders to the Chatham Hall campus.

Saujani’s national non-profit organization works to close the gender gap in technology and prepare young women for jobs of the future. In her groundbreaking book, Women Who Don’t Wait in Line, Saujani advocates for a new model of female leadership focused on embracing risk and failure, promoting mentorship and sponsorship, and boldly charting one’s own course, personally and professionally.

Ms. Saujani will be in residence at Chatham Hall on November 14 and 15, 2016, with a keynote address the evening of November 14th.

Seating will be limited. Information regarding the keynote address, for which tickets will be necessary, will be made available closer to the day of the event.

This camp is built around the development of a student’s 21st century skills, especially those related to problem solving, collaboration and curiosity. This is accomplished through the integration of the areas of biology, chemistry, and technology into a program where students assume the role of crime scene investigators in order to solve a mock crime.

Join our Riding Faculty for an exceptional riding and residential experience. The riding facilities on Chatham Hall’s campus include: the indoor Mars Arena, two outdoor sand rings, and a permanent hunter-trial course. Six Turtles earned conference accolades for their solid play throughout the season; Lanie Walsh ’18 was named to the first team all-conference squad, and Robin Boch ’16, Amber Huggins ’16, and Maisie Strawn ’17 made the BRC Honorable Mention team. Not to be left out, Victoria Bongard ’16 and Nancy Ding ’16 were named to the BRC all-tournament team for their solid play in the semifinal game.

student-athlete was recognized of being a “Scholar of Distinction.” The High School National Academic Squad program recognizes high school seniors and juniors who have achieved a minimum cumulative, unweighted GPA of 3.5 out of 4.0 or the equivalent through the first quarter of the 2015–16 school year. Seniors and juniors who have achieved a minimum cumulative, unweighted GPA of 3.9 out of 4.0 or the equivalent through the first quarter of the 2015–16 school year have been recognized as Scholars of Distinction.

The tennis team capped off a stellar season with a 5-4 win in the BRC Championship match to become back-to-back BRC Champions! Ana Carol Wilson ’16 and Imani Brooks ’16 were able to finish out the final game to win the match for the Turtles! Four girls picked up all-conference awards for their play during the regular season; Holly Rule ’16 and Catherine Hare ’18 were named to the first team all-conference squad, while Torey-Bates Samuel ’16 and Camille Walton ’16 were named to the second-team. Holly Rule ’16, Catherine Hare ’18, and Srila Chadalavada ’16 were also named to the all-tournament team for their play during the semifinal and championship matches. Additionally, Coach Chet Johns was recognized for his efforts with the coach of the year award.

In their first season of eligibility for the VISAA state tournament, the tennis team finished ranked 6th in the state for the final VISAA Division II poll. They traveled to take on #3 Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, and, despite their best efforts and a win by Camille Walton ’16, they were not able to progress further in the tournament.

Chatham Hall’s Interscholastic Equestrian Association Team finished off another fantastic season placing fourth at the Interscholastic Equestrian Association National Championship hosted at Kentucky Horse Park’s Alltech Arena in Lexington, Kentucky! Over multiple days of competition, April 20–24, Chatham Hall riders ELIZA BETH TREXLER ’ 1 7 and JU LI ETTE ALLI ATA ’ 1 7 contributed to the team points resulting in the 4th place finish. SARAH DOSS ’ 1 7 won the VictorHugo Sportsmanship Award. ELIZABETH TREXLER ’17 finished 1st place in every class in which she rode and was named the Individual Varsity Intermediate Flat Follow @RideChathamHall on National Champion.

Girl Up

On behalf of Girl Up, the United Nations Foundation’s adolescent girl campaign, Imani Brooks ’16 ran in the United Airlines NYC Half Marathon on March 20. Part of her training included raising $1,500 for the foundation by asking family and friends and local businesses for donations. As runner number 26,237, Imani, along with other members of Team Girl Up, ran 13.1 miles through Central Park and finished in Wall Street. She ran with the support of the Chatham Hall community and the Girl Up community encouraging her every step of the way. As a National Teen Advisor for Girl Up, Inc., she was happy to represent the foundation.

Girl Up engages girls to take action, empowering them to change our world. Led by a community of nearly half a million passionate advocates raising awareness and funds, the campaign’s efforts aim to help the hardest to reach girls living in places where it is hardest to be a girl.

On April 2, Chatham Hall’s Girl Up club

hosted a dog/car wash fundraiser. The event served as a way to raise money and say thank you to teachers for their dedication to educating Chatham Hall girls.

Elizabeth Trexler ’17 and Imani Brooks ’16 worked hard to get donated supplies from Chatham Animal Clinic and the Animal Medical Clinic in South Boston, Virginia. Enthusiastic club members came out for 3 hours leaving faculty cars and dogs squeaky clean!

C H AT H A M H A L L BLOOD DRIVE Organized by Rachel Hightman ’18, Chatham Hall had a very successful drive on March 9th, 2016! 37 donors gave 26 units (roughly 26 pints) of blood, impacting more than 78 patients! In collaboration with the Chatham Hall National Honor Society, 27 volunteers, many of whom also donated blood, made 150 cards for local Danville Hospital patients.

What is your favorite place on campus?

J. Fountain, Rector from 2003–2014, and Missy Fountain back to campus! Dr. Fountain joined us for the dedication and unveiling of his portrait. This portrait is the work of artist Stephen Craighead and was installed in Dabney to acknowledge the impact of Dr. Fountain’s academic legacy. Alumnae, faculty, and friends also heard remarks from Board of Trustees Chair Stacey M. Goodwin ’83 and past trustees Lisa Rosenberger Moore ’59, Trina Robinson Secor ’68, and Dora M. Thomas P’02, ’04. Lisa Rosenberger Moore ’59 and Nina Johnson Botsford ’72 presented the portrait.

My favorite place on campus is Curtis’s Garden. I remember so fondly a beautiful spring afternoon when Dr. Beal let us hold our class on Wordsworth’s poetry seated around the reflecting pool surrounded by blossoms. That garden will always be a place of peace in my mind.

What is your present state of mind?

I feel engaged by so many different aspects of my life—by my family, my teaching and research as a college professor, as well as by larger issues facing my community and the world.

What do you love most about your daughter?

I love Mira’s fearlessness, her adventurous spirit, her sense of humor, and her resilience. She’s so much braver than I was at her age, or maybe am even now!

But looking back, I’m always amused and touched to recall how utterly disastrous my initial roommate experience was, and then how much I came to love and respect that person as we both grew over the next four years and beyond. I think that’s a very Chatham Hall experience—to find the kind of space and acceptance that lets us grow.

What are your dreams for your daughter?

I have a very realistic dream: that Mira will graduate from Chatham Hall with all of her passion and exuberance intact, with the confidence to pursue some direction in life that gives her a sense of purpose and meaning, and that she will carry with her always the security that comes from deep and lasting female friendship.

How do you think your classmates remember you?

I think my classmates will remember me as passionate and loud. I’m a pretty open book. With me, you see what you get.

What are your dreams for yourself?

My favorite place on campus is the black box. I have only good memories in the black box and it is the place on campus that I feel most at home. The other great thing about the black box is that it changes every show. It can be anything you want it to be, which is comforting, in a way.

I want to learn. That’s what the next 7 years of my life are for, maybe more if I go to graduate school. I want to learn anything and everything that I find interesting. Otherwise, I don’t know.

I want to live life to the fullest and I worry that if I confine myself to one dream or goal, I’ll forget to.

What is your present state of mind?

I have only good memories in the black box and it is the place on campus that I feel most at home. The other great thing about the black box is that it changes every show. It can be anything you want it to be, which is comforting, in a way. - M I R A

The Modern Library: A Novel Concept

L

ibrarians enter the profession for different reasons. I’ve worked with colleagues whose passion was for organizing materials, others who loved research, some who started working as library pages during their youth and just never left, and still others who, like me, got in it for the books. I love books, and when I realized I could make a career out of my love of reading, I was hooked.

The reason we enter a profession is not always the same reason we remain in it (and passionate about it). Today’s libraries are about so much more than physical books. Library programs champion access to information and help organize and instruct use of that information. In the Lee Library, you’ll still see elements of the library you grew up in, no matter when you grew up. With more than 10,000 physical items, we have shelves of materials, including DVDs and books, to support pleasure reading and the outside interests of our community. When a student or faculty member needs a resource, I can have new materials in just two days. We still have quiet spaces to study, but we also have great collaborative spaces, with enough room for both to happen simultaneously.

Some mainstays of libraries have moved online, such as our catalog and many reference sources. Although you may not see giant encyclopedia sets, we do not rely on free resources such as Wikipedia or Dictionary.com. Instead,

we subscribe to Encyclopaedia Brittanica and the Oxford English Dictionary.

We’ve also moved our newspapers online, both in a more traditional format through Overdrive and through subscriber websites. I personally love the feeling of newsprint between my fingers, but the reality is that it’s difficult to get major national newspapers delivered to Chatham on the day of publication.

Advances in technology have made it so much easier to connect to the outside world, and libraries go far beyond what you can easily Google. Through online databases provided by Gale, ProQuest,

that students might not have on their personal computers. We have creative supplies for students to use in projects and for personal edification. We are as happy to lend a book as a science kit or sewing machine. But more than that, a library is not just a space and the physical objects inside of it; a good library is an impalpable but utterly accessible resource available to its users where it’s needed and when it’s needed, and I love being the driving force behind it all. So yes, we still have books, and that’s just one piece of the wonderful whole that is the Lee Library at Chatham Hall. I may have entered my profession for

a libraryis not just a space and the physical objects inside of it; a good library is an impalpable but utterly accessible resource available to its users where it’s needed and when it’s needed and JSTOR, we can read academic journals and publications that we might previously have only found in a university library. Those same databases provide access to current and back issues of magazines, historical newspapers, and even worldwide news sources posted within days of publication. Our 194,000 eBooks through EBSCO and Overdrive help ensure that our non-fiction support materials are up to date.

All that being said, the library is more than those classical characteristics. We have computers with software and tools

the books, but I remain in it because of the world of knowledge at my fingertips and the joy of helping others explore the same.

After Chatham Hall, Mary Shallenberger ’66 went on to Mount Holyoke College where she earned a B.S. in Biology. She worked at Stanford University for several years before earning her M.S. in Civil Engineering from Stanford. That was her gateway to a career in environmental and

natural resource protection. She spent the next 40 years working in various public policy positions in environmental and natural resource protection.

She worked in the California State Senate as a Policy Committee consultant drafting and analyzing legislation before becoming the senior advisor to the President Pro Tempore of the State Senate. Upon retirement in 2005, she was appointed to the California Coastal Commission where she served as the Chair for three years, and currently serves as a Commissioner.

Reunion Celebrations 2016 More than 160 Chatham Hall alumnae and friends from 29 states, representing classes from 1951 to 2011, came home to Chatham Hall for Reunion Weekend, April 15–17. Alumnae travelled from as far as California, Costa Rica, England, Hawaii, and Oregon to join in the celebration.

The 50th Reunion Class of 1966, with 18 members in attendance, had the highest attendance, and they were followed by the Classes of 1991 and 2006 with 16 members from each class in attendance! We also applauded the Class of 1966 for having 60% giving participation in the 2015–2016 fiscal year, and for raising $88,000 for the School. The Class of 1966’s Reunion Gift is the renovation of the Rectory Garden.

It was a wonderful weekend of reconnection, fellowship, and stories of Chatham Hall’s shared history. Highlights of the

weekend included a moving Oak Tree Dedication Ceremony, a history of Chatham Hall talk featuring Chatham Hall’s Gardens and Grounds and the history of May Day by Dr. William Black, student and faculty presentations—“Meet ‘Shelldon and the Award-Winning Tutu Turtles Robotics Team” and “Thoreau’s Walden Pond Meets the 21st Century,” a Purple and Gold reception and Garden Party, visits with Rector Suzanne Walker Buck, and the presentation of our 2016 Distinguished Alumna—Gloria Bond Clunie ’71.

Carol Babcock Davenport This year I only found seven members of our class at home on the day that I called. I left messages for all the rest. Eleanor Lyman Hodges ’47 is still in her apartment in New York City and decided to sell her home in East Bristol, Maine this past summer. She is well and happy to hear about the school. Gaynor Ingersoll Miller ’47 has renewed contact with her roommate, Anne Perkins Cabot ’47, and is enjoying life at her retirement community. She visits with her daughter in New York State. Downsizing is now Cordy Ruffins Richards ’47 big challenge. After selling her condominium she plans to move into a retirement community in Annapolis. Faulk Manor, a retirement center in Wilmington, is Hester Fogg Saxon’s ’47 new address. Her son continues to excel in the Special Olympics. Mervyn Adams Seldon ’47 reports that Pomona is becoming a culinary hot spot. The art gallery which she helps to manage and where she exhibits may need to relocate to maintain its client base. Harry and Nancy Evans Gruner ’47 enjoy living in their

Elizabeth Evans It was a great pleasure to meet Rector Suzanne Buck and interact with fellow Chathamites last month (February) in Vero Beach, Florida.

Cynthia Murray Henriques I still have a 13.1 Haflinger mare which I drive in the summertime and have youngsters who ride her in the wintertime. So still in the horse world in a minor way! Still studying the piano—keeps the fingers limber! Have a granddaughter getting married this summer—that will be a family gathering.

Margaret Johnson Lee is happy and living in the place where she grew up, has four children nearby, has lots of friends, and is delighted that a grandson is getting married! She is also active in the Garden Club, still golfing, and enjoying her games of bridge.

Susan Fair Boyd Life continues to be fun and interesting even though I lost my wonderful husband of 62 years. I was lucky to have him.

Ann Cochran McCandless My husband passed away 11 months ago after a rather long decline in his health. Our friends, and, of course, our wonderful children have been a great help to me. I am doing ok...and will stay here in our condo in Clayton.

Sarah Shartle Meacham Two of our classmates have died recently: Johan Thompson Newcombe ‘51 last fall, and Joan Chickering Volberg ‘51 just after Christmas. Kent Brain Rogers Since we are now 81 and 85, we decided it was time to simplify our lives. We have recently downsized to a very nice apartment in a lovely retirement community just a few miles from the home we had owned for 51 years and moved into four times after serving in other countries with the Foreign Service.

Joan Cass Adams Even though I am physically limited these days, I continue to enjoy the beauty and complexity of New Mexico. I am also sustained by my three children and five grandchildren. Of course, the essence of my Chatham Hall years has been the spiritual undercurrent throughout my life. Write or call anytime!

Judy Ruffin Anderson had a quiet winter in Winchester, Virginia except for a January snowstorm that dumped over three feet of snow. With advance warning and on the advice of her children, she went into town and rode out the storm with a friend. The visit turned into six days—the time it took to plow Judy’s driveway!

Lucy McClellan Barrett It has been a year since we all caught up. Suzanne Walker Buck, our new Rector, is in her second year at Chatham Hall. She has traveled extensively and met many alumnae while maintaining a very steady hand on the helm of the School.

She continues to win many friends and advocates for Chatham Hall. Suzanne has a strong administrative team and faculty and has created enormous enthusiasm among the students.

The campus is thriving under her leadership. I feel very fortunate to be involved at this time in the School’s history. A PLEA: Now that all of us have entered or are about to enter a new decade, it is more important than ever to stay connected. Johnny and I had an exciting 2015 with lots of travel: a tour of Japan in April where we made new friends from Northern Ireland and hit the cherry blossoms at their peak— breathtaking. In July, we took children (now middle-aged adults!) and grandchildren on a memorable safari in Kenya. And in November, we visited England and Poland where we had the heart-wrenching experience of seeing the World War II camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau. We found Krakow to be

a beautiful and fascinating historical city and loved the Polish people we met.

So far in 2016 we have stayed closer to home except to visit two of our three children and their families who live on the West Coast. Currently, we are blessed with good health but are keenly aware that life has a way of changing the landscape—so carpe diem and let us hear from YOU! Olivia Hutchins Dunn I am finally settled in my “Treehouse” on Christmas Tree Lane in Southport, Connecticut!!!!

I love being so close to this charming little village and one of my closest friends is just across the street. Son, John, has finished his second book which tells about his journey hitchhiking across the country (literally...

California to Massachusetts) raising money along the way for the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, the disease that killed his father. We have our fingers crossed as to its publisher.

Gail Lassiter Malin has five grandchildren and writes that “Chatham is all over Vero Beach!” Pat Carter Hatch ’53 and her husband, Bill, spend two months there in the winter. Gail also sees Margot Bell Woodwell ’53 and Chathamites from other classes, Lala Mapes Maresi ’59, Lee Porter Page ’59, and Ann Weir ’59. Gail reports that Loulie Glenn McCulloch ’53 is “still painting beautiful things for the Admiralty Gallery here in Vero. They are exquisite!”

Jean Connelly Mooney is moving to Ojai, California to be closer to her daughter, Alex, and family. town frequently. My grandson, Henry, is in Capetown, South Africa getting his Master’s Degree in Environmental Studies and loving Africa. I hope to visit him one day if my knees allow.

I’m partially bionic—one replaced knee and one replaced hip, but otherwise wonderfully healthy. I adopt senior dogs, volunteer in the local Elementary School, and am now living the life of my mother, having given up painting, at least for the time being.

Didi Silliman Stockly has decided to ignore “four score” and still plays tennis with younger opponents! Way to go Didi! As she says, “Holmes and I are still kicking!”

Janet Sawtelle Houghton We finally moved from our large old house into an energy efficient wonderful condo, still in Cape Elizabeth. Husband, John, recently retired, and I am still working a couple of days a week in Pre Admission testing at Mercy Hospital…keeps the mind active with a new computer system, and it’s nice working with considerably younger colleagues! Nice being near sisters Audrey Sawtelle Delafield ’60 and Chris Sawtelle Teale ’51, both of whom went to Chatham as well…

anniversary next summer. Our childhood romance (me 15, John 17) still going strong! Still travelling whenever possible—are planning to go to the British Virgin Islands sailing next spring. Children are now middle age—makes us feel OLD. Have a great amount of snow here in Aspen, so skiing’s great. However, I’m recovering from a broken hip, so won’t be on the slopes this year!

Claire Gardner Robinson I am widowed 11 years, but now engaged to a wonderful man whose late wife was my husband’s 1st cousin! Known each other 40 years! We’re traveling everywhere. I sill live in Marshfield Hills, Massachusetts, and volunteer in court for a Domestic Violence Center, plus keep my small private practice in counseling. So special to have visited Chatham Hall in October for the first time since graduation in 1957 and seeing the wonderful additions to the campus, without losing any of the historical beauty.

Margaret Cushing I remain an active travel agent and went to Europe four times in 2015. I had two visits with Lisa Rosenberger Moore ’59 in New York, including the 2.8 foot snowstorm in January. I am on two Boards. As Dame Maggie Smith remarked, “at our age, it is (sadly) all wigs and bonnets!” Last year I played an owner of a little café; and as it turned out, I was the murderess!

Lucy Wise Illiff The past year has been both a happy and a sad year for me.

In November my sixth grandchild was born: Paige Elizabeth Leslie Iliff. But then almost at the same time, Frances Johnson Lee-Vandell ’60’s son, Chris, was killed in a tragic automobile accident on his way to work the morning of one bright fall day. We had known Chris from the time he was a very small, intriguing little red headed boy when Charlie was at UVA law school.

After law school, Charlie, our children, and I spent skiing trips with Chris, Frances, Robin, and Alletta, watched him play polo, and had happy visits to their farm with the round house.

Chris grew up to be what I think of as a Virginia gentleman: smart, capable, generous, and caring. He was the CEO of R.E. Lee and Sons, a loving family man, and respected leader in the Charlottesville community, contributing his time to The United Way, Red Cross, Chamber of Congress (regional and local), Vestry of St. Paul’s Memorial Church, and other organizations. This year the Chamber named the small business award of the year after him. It was his visioning talent that the state Chamber of Commerce liked. He was a builder who wasn’t doing sprawl, wanted infill and renovation, and creative spaces. In the coal lands business, he was pitching becoming an energy company and leading us to purchase wind energy, and solar. Evidence of how much he was loved and respected was shown by the turnout of close to 800 people in the packed church at his funeral.

I know how proud Frances was of Christopher and how terribly she will miss him, as will we all.

Betsy Walter-Echols Still doing what I have been for the last couple of years: teaching English to Germans, and German to a few of the million refugees who descended on Germany last year—I assume you’ve been hearing about our crisis in the news? Germany opened its borders, and is regretting it, because almost no other European states did. But we volunteers just go on trying to help. My students are mainly from Syria, Iran, and Afghanistan, an interesting bunch! Our son Michael works in Saarbrücken and comes to visit every 3–4 weeks. We continue to wish our daughter Marjorie and her (patchwork) family could just head out from South Carolina and join us! Once a year just isn’t enough for keeping touch with those grandchildren.

Needless to say, I am still on Cloud nine!!

Josephine Bayard At the age of almost 70, I have met a wonderful man, Daniel. We are going to Thailand for a month in April to study yoga and meditation. I continue with my involvement on the Foundation Board of the Dreyfoos School of the Performing Arts and volunteer work as a Guardian Ad Litem. I was delighted to see Ann Robinson Stevenson ’64 and her husband, Jay, this winter when they were in Florida. We reconnected after our 50th reunion about three years ago.

cated with two more in the pipeline. We race at Belmont and Saratoga. We take care of our horses after racing and each has the equivalent of an equine 401K. I am writing now from Aiken, South Carolina where I come in the winter with the horses. If they get to vacation and train here in the winter, then so do I! Aiken is a wonderful small town with a lot of character and a very friendly environment.

All you need is a dog at the end of a leash and you will find dozens of new friends. Robert retired from the Opera Company of Philadelphia after 20 some years. We have spent the past two years gutting and restoring a cottage on the banks of the Hudson. It is about 12 miles from Saratoga Springs, New York, so there is always a lot going on.

It has turned out wonderfully and the views up river are spectacular. We see rapids and a waterfall, and across from us is an island and a lock. An old metal bridge across the river has been restored for walking and biking and merges into a wonderful small park with trails along the river and hooking to a canal tow path which ends up conveniently directly in front of a little wine store in the closest town.

Getting antiquated is tough, but best to keep pushing in as forward a direction as possible. I would welcome visits in Aiken or Saratoga.

Elizabeth Reigeluth Parker The best part of the summer was an overnight stay at Rehoboth Beach, Delaware in August on the way to New Jersey for a nephew’s wedding. Richard and I invited ourselves to stay with Carol McNeilly Emmert ’64, my senior year roommate, whom I hadn’t seen since the summer of 1964. Carol had planned to be at our 50th Reunion, but the birth of twin grandbabies changed those plans.

We had a wonderful time catching up, getting out to fish, bird, beach walk, explore parks and wild lands, and generally validating the incredible friendship launched at Chatham Hall. We missed Joan Womble Stone ’75 and her husband, who originally helped organize the get-together, but had to change their plans this year. Theresa Walsh Marchioni My immediate family is doing well. Bob’s retirement date is on the horizon and very exciting to think about.

Where will we go? What will we do? The sky’s the limit! The kids are all good: Danny still in China, Jeff in Orlando, Bobby due to graduate this year, and Jimmy will be a senior next year and plans to go into the Navy. I was able to go on a mission trip to Kenya in Sept/Oct 2015 and also got to meet my compassion child who I have sponsored through Compassion International for eight years.

It was an amazing trip! We closed out 2015 with the unexpected death of my mother on November 6th. Although life will never be the same without her, especially for my father, the routine of my daily life has not really changed all that much. There are times I still reach for the phone to tell her something...my extended family plans to get together this July for my father’s 80th birthday and we anticipate a bitter sweet reunion. Life is precious and fragile. You never know when it may be the last time...hug and kiss each other goodbye when you part ways and always say, “I love you” before you hang up the phone.

Alison Beckner Kaloumenos Bonjour from Paris! My husband, Manthos, Alison Beckner and I are still Kaloumenos ’92 and husband in Tulum here. He works as a creative director for interiors—most notably in retail and restaurants—and moonlights as a DJ for a new online radio (Pigalle Paris Radio). I run a boutique consulting and management agency called SCOUT—we specialize in lifestyle consulting and representation for mind/body talent and brands. I’m also organizing wellness retreats—my first will be in June in Lebanon, followed by Normandy, Bordeaux, and Greece. And a winter retreat in Latin America is also in the works. I just wrote a mini-guide on Vogue.com and do lots of this type of work for clients. Anna Porter I’m currently deciding between pursuing a PhD in Applied Experimental Psychology at Catholic University or a Masters

in General Psychology at Brandeis University. At Brandeis, I’d be working in the Biological Healthy Psychology Lab. I won’t be able to decide until I visit schools in April. An important milestone that happened this semester was becoming a published co-author in Human Factors. The article is titled, Speech Auditory Alerts Promote Memory for Alerted Events in a VideoSimulated Self-Driving Car Ride. I’ve also had the honor of being a student panelist at the Eastern Psychological Association meeting in New York City this past March where I discussed undergraduate research and mentor-ship models.

Lori Palmore Heath I got to catch up with several Chatham girls in 2015. In September, I went to New York and spent time with my former “roomie,” Liz Hutchinson ’98. This is the third time we’ve gotten together in New York in the past few years! In November, Susan Alexander Mount ’98 came to visit our family farm in Missouri, where we got to horseback ride and spend time catching up as we hit the trails. In December, I went to Kentucky and visited Kerry O’Neill Irwin ’98 and was privileged to an amazing meal she and her husband Chris prepared. It was a blast seeing all of them!

Joanna Caldwell Henderson married Joe Henderson on May 9, 2015 at Migis Lodge in South Casco, Maine. Fellow ’06 classmates Jessica Hills ’06 and Olga Ramsay ’06 traveled north to celebrate with them! Joanna and Joe are looking forward to moving to New Hampshire in the fall where Joe will be pursuing an MBA at the Tuck School of Business.
