letter from the rector Dear Friends, This is a long-awaited message, as much for me as I’m sure it has been for you. My first year at Chatham Hall was a whirlwind, and as we know one that was unprecedented in American education. It would be easy to talk about the challenges brought to us by COVID-19, but we all know them. I’d rather discuss the lessons learned, and the opportunities and successes that came along with the pandemic, many you will see detailed in these pages.

In addition to our community and programmatic updates, I am thankful we have this opportunity to celebrate a very unique group in our Chatham Hall community: our Class of 2020. This was the first class to graduate via a virtual ceremony, and its members are the embodiment of “Turtle Strong.” I know you will all join me in commending these graduates for the grace with which they accepted new realities and welcoming them as our youngest alumnae.

Though we will no doubt remember the 20192020 academic year as the one that felt cut short, the one in which our best laid plans went awry, the one in which we had to learn to be together while apart, it brought us to a place in which we never expected to find ourselves.

I don’t just mean a virtual graduation for the Class of 2020, or learning in classrooms with masks on, or celebrating Chapels outside, or playing intramural athletics – though those are all innovative ways that we have continued to be able to offer a Chatham Hall experience to our students. I mean a place in which we have each come to better know our resolve, our creativity, and our originality. A place in which we as a community are working hard to live our commitment to each other, and we feel the support of our sisters who have gone before us.

Looking back on the past year, I am at once disbelieving of all that has changed in our world and comforted by how much has stayed the same.

Even in new formats we welcome leaders and writers to campus, enjoy our Cookie Breaks, and cheer for our Purple and Gold teams. The sheer dedication of our faculty and staff, led in this respect by the Pandemic Response Task Force, has made this possible. So too have the investments our donors make each time they give to the School. We recognize this critical support in our advancement annual report, and I know I speak for everyone on campus today when I say, sincerely, thank you for allowing us to fulfill our mission and provide a girl-first education and experience to each student, and this year a sense of normalcy in a world that feels anything but normal.

This summer, we outlined an action plan for diversity, equity, and inclusion work that began last year and has already influenced this school year. Similarly, our work in health and wellness has resulted in new paradigms to influence new programming. I am truly excited that this year we can share more of this work, as well as other major areas of concentration including our entrepreneurship program and our new hybrid teaching and learning model for 2020-2021. It is our goal that the fall Chat will, going forward, serve as an annual report of sorts to the Chatham Hall community on the work of the year before, sharing where we stand with strategic priorities and our goals for the future.

The following is an excerpt from Rector Connell’s remarks at the virtual graduation ceremony held on May 23, 2020.

G

ood morning to the strong, smart, beautiful members of the Class of 2020 and to your families and loved ones. Good morning also to the Classes of 2021, 2022, and 2023 and to our fine faculty and staff.

Delivering these remarks as I am today is odd and sad and frustrating. I had a vision for what this would look like and I know you did too. And then, we all know what happened, and my vision did not include delivering a message you would see from a small screen. You have been robbed of a moment you have worked towards your entire lives. And as this was my first Commencement as your Rector, I wanted to spend time reveling with you and my colleagues in your accomplishments and in your joy because you have so much to be proud of.

Circumstance has demanded that you flex and adapt like never before. It demands that you sacrifice, which you continue to do, and are doing by watching this on video since we cannot be together. Circumstance has asked you to continue to lead, and lead differently than you prepared for, and to transition leadership to the Class of 2021 with encouragement and guidance but delivered from afar. It has forced you to rezone yourself, to reset your expectations time and time again - and in a very short time - and you have done it with the muscles such as grace, such as frustration, and with some resignation and with tears and the muscle that is dignity. Please remember there is dignity in tears. There is maturity in tears. If ever there was a moment where hope had to flex itself just like a muscle this was the moment and Class of 2020, you did it well and you will do it well.

And so today we celebrate you, in alphabetical order, and give you each your moment. Congratulations to the Class of 2020! Esto Perpetua.

Activist Nadya Okamoto Addresses Community on Girls’ Day On Feb. 25, 2020, Chatham Hall celebrated Girls’ Day with a variety of studentled workshops, creative community time, and a special keynote address.

Girls applied in the fall to teach classes on topics they are passionate about, and faculty advisors mentored them in preparation for the day.

The afternoon brought special guest Nadya Okamoto, Harvard student and co-founder of the PERIOD movement, which seeks to increase education and advocacy regarding menstrual hygiene and provide access to period products globally.

She spoke about the unique characteristics and capacity for change that lives within Generation Z, deeply relating to her audience who was just a few years younger. “It’s refreshing to be in front of an all-female audience,” she said, and “if you think I’m cool, then you clearly haven’t talked to enough young people!”

With chapters across the globe, including a chapter at Chatham Hall, Okamoto praised the hard work of the movement and told her inspirational story.

She challenged girls to take bold steps, ask lots of questions, respect those with experience who can help, and to make their impact measurable along the way. And in a particularly exciting moment, Okamoto helped chapter president Peyton Allen ’20 announce that period products would be available free of charge in all Chatham Hall bathrooms beginning spring 2020!

Bishop-Elect Haynes Visits Chatham Hall

The Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia consecrated Rev. Susan Bunton Haynes as the 11th bishop of the Diocese of Southern Virginia on Feb. 1, 2020 in Williamsburg, VA. Just before this historic occasion, Rev. Haynes made a trip to Chatham to meet current students, tour campus, and participate in our Chapel service on Jan. 19.

When she described her visit, Rev. Haynes noted how impressed she was with Chatham Hall and how much she is looking forward to connecting with students and faculty in the future.

“I was hoping my tour guides would be students.

They talked about how Chatham Hall is a place that prepares girls to be leaders. All I could think about as they spoke was that I can already see that they are leaders. If that is the kind of girl Chatham Hall is striving for, it’s truly doing well,” she said.

When Rev. Haynes reflected on her experience celebrating with the community for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, she expressed how moving it was.

“I know students crafted the service. The readings were powerful, and the students were very well engaged. I could tell that justice is an important value for them and this community.”

Elizabeth Acevedo Visits Campus as Writer in Residence On Feb. 10 and 11, 2020 best-selling author Elizabeth Acevedo visited Chatham Hall as Writer in Residence.

Over her two-day visit, Acevedo brought her passion and inspirational personality as she led a writers’ workshop open to interested members of the community, delivered a keynote address, and visited classes to discuss her work and writing process. In her keynote address, Acevedo shared her experiences as a young person, writer, and influencer of modern young adult literature. Acevedo described how her own personal background influences her novels and fielded questions from students ranging from commentary on culture to empowering young girls and women.

Acevedo is an awardwinning novelist whose debut, The Poet X, won the National Book Award.

Her follow-up novel, With the Fire on High, explores creative talent and leadership through food and cooking. Winner of the Golden Kite Award for young adult fiction, Acevedo shows us the mind and heart of teenage mom Emoni Santiago as she struggles with how to follow her dreams — and whether she should.

Doris Kearns Goodwin Inspires as Polly Wheeler Guth ’44 Leader in Residence Doris Kearns Goodwin, world-renowned presidential historian, public speaker, and Pulitzer Prize-winning, New York Times #1 bestselling author, visited campus on Nov. 18 and 19 as the 2019-2020 Polly Wheeler Guth ’44 Leader in Residence.

Goodwin spent her time on campus meeting with students in various formats - engaging them in dialogue about her life and work as one of the few women in presidential staffing in the 1960s, and her reflections on leadership.

In her reflections on her time on campus, she drew parallels to her own experiences and what Chatham Hall creates for its students every day.

“You’re very lucky to have found this place,” she said. “You all seem alive at a time when teenagers can be quite cynical—this place has enlivened your curiosity, and you can take that with you throughout your days.”

Goodwin also noted the capacity for leadership in Chatham Hall girls both while at school and in their future endeavors. “In general, women prepare more, work harder, are more detail oriented, and work more collaboratively together. Because you’ve studied with all girls at this key time in your life development, you’ve got a cadre of women to draw strength from throughout your life, and that is so special.”

A New Look at Older Spaces A t Chatham Hall, refreshing beautiful spaces brings great joy to donors. They demonstrate a love for the School community through generous stewardship. Concerned that public spaces had become a little too “well-loved,” five years ago several Trustees set out to revitalize the Tea Room, the Rectory living room, the Pruden drawing rooms, and the Well. The recent revitalization of the Large Drawing Room completes “the Pruden Project,” thanks to a gift from Trustee Robin Peake Stuart ’69. When it comes to the campus, “taking care of what we have is a first order of business” for our Trustees, says Chief Advancement Officer Christine Knight.

When the Well, Large Drawing Room, and Small Drawing Room came due for some

extra attention, longtime School supporters were at the ready with gifts of funds, art,

and other treasures. Of the renovations, says Knight, “the word ‘transformational’ is no understatement.”

Fortunately for Chatham Hall and its students this view is shared broadly by the School community, and the generosity of many thoughtful donors - including the girls themselves - has brought new glory to treasured older spaces.

In 2019-2020, the Class of 2019, in what Knight celebrates as “an amazing first step in their philanthropy journey,” pledged to devote the proceeds from their fundraisers to begin the multiphase project of revitalizing the Niche, the student lounge area in the basement of Dabney Hall. The Class of 2020 joined in with their class gift.

The lush, beautiful landscape that surrounds campus center extends nearly 400 acres. Over the generations, our trees, meadows, and forests have undergone their own journeys and changes right alongside Chatham Hall girls. The 2019-2020 school year provided an opportune moment to be good stewards of our forests and fields, laying the groundwork for a new decade of plantings and renewal to bring life, wellness, and serenity to our community.

Starting in fall 2019, 111 acres of forestland will be harvested for timber in a project bringing great benefit to Chatham Hall and its environs. Not only did the harvest provide opportunities to reopen and enhance our campus trail systems and meadows but created opportunities for various indigenous replantings.

For those growing trees, there will be less competition for soil nutrients and sunlight allowing them to grow bigger and more rapidly when other trees do not crowd them. Given enough space, a tree can increase its crown, or treetop, size. Large crowns allow trees to capture more sunlight and, through photosynthesis, produce more sugars to grow faster. Good harvesting mimics nature but speeds the process. Harvesting also promotes the forest’s good health. areas. If trees are infected with insects or diseases, harvesting them is the best way to prevent the illness from spreading and to protect the healthy trees that remain. This project also set the groundwork for a larger opportunity to address the invasive populations of plants and animals on our campus, thereby allowing the natural ecosystem to flourish. Throughout this regeneration project, members of the Chatham Hall and local community were able to witness firsthand experiences of ecological processes and cycles. With work continuing in the 2020-2021 school year, even more opportunities are on our horizon, including the gift of the class of 2020 parents being used for replanting efforts when the time is right.

Chatham Hall Refreshes, Renews, and Regenerates its Forests and Fields

Spring Break For Chatham Hall, a typical Spring Break departure day brings a joyful chaos. The spring of 2020 was different. The emerging COVID-19 pandemic had replaced that joy with deep concern and uncertainty.

Community safety and public health mandates required decisive action, leaving Rector Rachel Connell and the Board of Trustees with only one sane but deeply painful choice: campus had to close.

For teachers staring down the remainder of the school year, this meant preparing to deliver the academic program remotely.

Spring Break became spring prep as the faculty leapt to action. The weeks and months that followed offered some of the most profound and generative educational challenges the faculty and students had ever known.

When classes began again - online, as with schools all over the world - Dean of Academics and 13-year Chatham Hall veteran Martha Griswold was not the least surprised to see the faculty not only with lessons prepared but ready to share some learning of their own along the way, lessons that would be central to building an uninterrupted educational experience for girls whose schooling might otherwise be derailed.

Lecturing on Zoom is possibly the most boring way to teach and learn,” Griswold observed, noting that the challenges of remote schooling are not merely instructional. “We had to rethink and reset expectations, boundaries, and norms,” even as new challenges came to the fore.

But familiar resources once taken for granted were now sorely missed. Every square foot of campus, every library asset, every club and activity that were once on hand for all were no longer available, exposing inequalities that could not be ignored. “Not all students have the same access to technology, adult help with homework, books, enrichment, quiet space, and privacy at home, to say nothing of family members having to go to work in essential jobs. Navigating those differences requires a thoughtful, compassionate touch,” Griswold said.

Spring, Broken March continued to deliver bad news for the record books at a national level: ballooning COVID-19 case numbers, more hotspots, more deaths, new and confusing travel restrictions, financial hardship, confusion on masking and gathering, and lack of consensus around the very nature of transmission of the virus at the center of the greatest combined public health and economic threat in generations.

Hopeful talk of a speedy return to the gentler days before the pandemic soon gave way to the daily job of reacting, adjusting, and pivoting, until it became clear that the crisis would demand more than tweaks and temporary closures.

How would the School meet this challenge?

The Power of Tradition The answer echoed from deep within Chatham Hall’s history, traditions, and mission: the challenge would be met the Chatham Hall way, with honor, and with a program and care worthy of the girls it serves.

The dislocating jolt of the pandemic and the separation of students from their school forced a reevaluation of everything, including tradition.

Cookie Break, Advisory meetings, and regular Chapels were quickly revealed to be much more than habits; they became essential touchstones of comfort and common purpose, keeping the spirit of the educational enterprise whole and focused where it belonged: squarely on the girls.

More clarity would be needed, however, before summer’s end.

Should the Chatham Hall campus reopen? Should classes go fully online? Should day students be allowed to come and go from campus? What of international students unable to return to the United States? As the Pandemic Response Task Force grappled with these questions, it became clear that answering them was incredibly complex, and so it followed that the School would need to operate not just remotely or in person, success required both.

Neighbors at the Ready For the campus to reopen, myriad factors needed to align. Many of them, like travel restrictions, were beyond the School’s control, but the School would have to be ready if a safe opening was at all possible.

For Chief Financial Officer Jennifer Hiltwine, readiness meant broad scenario planning, from best case to worst. All options were put on the table.

Hiltwine led an exhaustive planning process that revealed major supply-chain shortcomings.

With every educational institution and business in the world competing for janitorial supplies, personal protective equipment, and even air handling machines, small enterprises like Chatham Hall were at a significant disadvantage.

As Hiltwine and her team set about redesigning everything from traffic flow to air flow, they looked to neighbors for help. “Trophy and Sign Center, a family business in Danville, got us new signage to help us maintain safe social distancing, traffic patterns, oneway footpaths, and safe occupancy limits,” she said, while, “ReyChem in Chatham managed to get us the hand sanitizer and cleaning products” that were in short supply everywhere else, including through multinational giants.

The move to local vendors was more than just nimble sourcing.

Said Hiltwine, “having local partners strengthens our ties with our community.” Out of the great reshuffling came new business relationships that honored the very meaning of neighborhood.

The results have been more than reassuring. Hiltwine described the reaction of her counterparts at other schools: “When they heard about all of our scenario planning, our comprehensive review of vendor contracts, our investments in educational technology and especially our purchase of HALO air sanitizing machines, they were just amazed. At that point I knew we were doing our job well. But, of course, we had to.”

The Essential Question Even as the pandemic led the School to draw closer to its neighbors, its relative isolation became a great asset. But even that needed reinforcement. To moderate the campus community’s exposure to the virus, traffic in and out needed to be minimized.

The School took the extraordinary step of inviting day students either to board at no additional cost or to attend school remotely.

International students would likewise be accommodated according to their ability and desire to return. Athletic competition would turn inward for the time being, with a fall season of strictly intramural sports.

All of these changes inevitably meant reimagining the academic program for the fall. Delivering remote and in-person instruction simultaneously required a mixture of live, recorded, in-person, and online teaching that would stretch the skills of every Chatham Hall teacher.

Knowing that she served with a top-notch faculty left Griswold sanguine about the prospects of the new hybrid model’s success. “I knew the faculty were up for it,” she said. “But we needed to understand that this was not so much a pivot as a toggle.” The academic program was strong, the teachers capable, and the students ready to learn. In Griswold’s estimation, “we just needed a few more tools in the toolbox.”

Enter One Schoolhouse. Originally founded as the Online School for Girls, One Schoolhouse proved to be a willing and capable partner in professional development as the teachers sought the tools they needed. Over the course of a multi-week summer intensive program called Designing, Building, & Teaching for Hybrid Learning, early-career and veteran teachers alike were challenged to think deeply not only about best practices in hybrid-model teaching but also about the very nature of their craft.

It also provided information and discussion boards so that teachers could better prepare for the trauma experienced by both teachers and students during the pandemic, which would necessarily return to campus with them.

The faculty proved more than equal to the job, said Griswold. “Chatham Hall teachers are motivated to do right by their students, and so they quickly mastered the basics and moved on from asking, ‘How do I do it?’ to ‘How do I make it better?’”

For Chatham Hall, where honor and intellectual growth, creativity, and personal responsibility form the beating heart of its mission, there could be no other question.

Update: The 2020-2021 school year saw 150 students enrolled, with 26 beginning as solely remote learners. After Thanksgiving Break all classes moved online for the completion of the semester. The faculty, staff, and administration remain ready to toggle at any time should they need to do so to provide the best experience possible to all students during this COVID-19 pandemic. A New Gold Standard Last spring, Latin teacher Sheppard Morrison found herself on unfamiliar pedagogical footing. “Before all of this, I felt my value as a teacher came from my ability to assess each student’s understanding in the moment, to guide with tailored questions, and to propose onthe-spot assignments that arise out of the girls’ own interests,” she said, adding with a smile in her voice, “Students who were used to a traditional structured approach found my teaching style rather challenging.”

Now it was Morrison’s turn to be challenged. However much she and her students valued her individualized, concierge-style classroom teaching, “It just does not work in remote, online groups,” she said, “And I knew that in order to be successful, I had to adapt.”

The energy Morrison once put into agile, just-in-time teaching had to be redirected to “I knew that in order to be strong planning, successful, I had to adapt.” with each lesson — “Our One Schoolhouse organized and delivered in a training gave me the tools clear, predictable, I needed to be successful.” and scheduled sequence. “In the world of hybrid teaching, preparation is everything,” Morrison noted. “Our One Schoolhouse training gave me the tools I needed to be successful.”

World Language Chair Kim Jackson, a 34-year veteran teacher, was more than familiar with the value of intense preparation. Having developed a trove of teaching materials so substantial that she has not felt the need to require a Spanish textbook for over 10 years, Señora Jackson was nevertheless surprised and delighted to find that an overseas trip last October left her even better prepared for the hybrid model.

“Because I had to plan for my absence from school, I prepared my Spanish lessons to be delivered remotely. It gave me a big leg up this spring and summer as we took up the challenge of adapting to the new reality.” Señora Jackson noted that her familiarity with the scope and sequence of Spanish instruction at every level helped, too. As Jackson put it, “When you know where you are on the course map, your direction of travel is clear.”

Dean of Academics Martha Griswold pointed out that the mix of strengths exemplified by Jackson and Morrison—deep experience and ingenious adaptability—have “allowed Chatham Hall’s hybrid learning program to be more than just a response thrown together during a pandemic. It allowed us to create a new gold standard of teaching and learning.”

Diversity, equity, and inclusion at Chatham Hall looks like cross-cultural communication, the affirmation of identities, and the valuing of difference to ultimately create a strong community.

“These basic tenets for discourse at Chatham Hall help to ensure tolerance, dignity, and a shared humanity,” asserted Glymph.

After a 2019-2020 school year that included a DEI climate survey assessment, the creation of DEI ambassadors, faculty implicit bias awareness training, “food and forum” meetings on a variety of topics, and several student discussions and celebrations, Glymph and Rector Rachel Connell articulated a DEI Action Plan for the School in summer 2020. In a July 20 letter to the community they detailed more than 25 goals for the 20202021 school year to help Chatham Hall become a more equitable community.

“We’ve made some progress towards these goals already,” said Connell. “We partnered with Honor Council and Prefects and updated our handbook to include a section on our intolerance for hate speech and offensive language or behavior and consequences when it occurs. Our entire faculty read White Fragility and worked with Trina Gary a second time on implicit bias awareness training this fall, and as a community we have read Under Pressure and worked with author Lisa Damour to better understand the lives of and pressures on today’s teenage girls.

Seeing a Need: Entrepreneurship at Chatham Hall

How has Chatham Hall maintained its vibrancy and relevance through 126 tumultuous years that spanned two world wars, multiple shocks to the global economy, and revolutionary changes in girls’ education? In a word: entrepreneurship.

The idea of entrepreneurship has received significant attention in the last few decades as the receptivity to new venture creation has substantially contributed to our global trade and economy. Yet Chatham Hall has been committed to entrepreneurial endeavors for more than a century, demonstrating

the keen opportunity perception and risk tolerance to innovate and change. Seeing a need. Embracing uncertainty. Investing all of one’s resources to bring an idea to fruition. Adapting along the way.

These actions constitute the work of the entrepreneur, and so it is with Chatham Hall. Fulfilling the mission - and in particular the call to prepare girls to better the world - demands a vision of the future and the girls who will lead it.

Beth Barksdale, Chatham Hall’s chaplain and herself the CEO of a successful business, puts it this way, “Just by the nature of a Chatham

Last year, when Chatham Hall piloted its first year-long course, Global Entrepreneurship, the response ensured the approval of Global Entrepreneurship II. Together these courses explore fundamentals of business and economics, teach skills in business planning, market diagnostics, presentation and pitching, and guide each girl through a discovery process and on to incubation of a business she designs. “If we are dreaming bigger,” Barksdale says, “I would like to see entrepreneurism woven into our culture, recognized as a foundational value, and touching every Chatham Hall student we serve.”

The School is already beginning to see this take hold through the visibility and integration of student projects. From social impact ventures responding to the demands of the COVID-19 pandemic to an Etsy business selling healthy horse treats, projects showcase the creativity and drive Chatham Hall students bring to their endeavors.

They also reveal something every Chatham Hall community member understands: the world’s problems are theirs to solve.

Chatham Hall has thrived because its community and leadership have infused it with entrepreneurship, attracted investment in its mission and its girls, and adapted to constant change. The new entrepreneurship program is this same Chatham Hall spirit made manifest, nurtured by a commitment to honor and mission, and powered by girls.

Uniquely designed by Barksdale for Chatham Hall, the twoyear program consists of three essential pillars that ensure our students have a hands-on learning opportunity to create value in their school, their local community, and the wider world. In each of these experiential locations, students test, launch, and scale their own entrepreneurial ventures that can be implemented and scaled as viable businesses.

Beth is Chief Executive Officer of Encore Exchange, a national healthcare patient communications company.

She brings more than her considerable business experience to the job. She is also an ordained Ruling Elder in the Presbyterian Church PCUSA, a candidate for the position of Teaching Elder with the PCUSA, and she is pursuing her Doctor of Ministry degree from Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond.

“Living and learning at the intersection of business and faith may not be an intuitive crossroad for everyone, but undoubtedly for me it is a calling. The students I have taught know my favorite word is ‘imagination.’ I have the opportunity at Chatham Hall to help students imagine a better world, and to fully prepare them to be faithful in their work,” she says.

No Place I’d Rather Be There are articles being recycled all the time now describing how the professional journey has changed, how entire industries have yet to take shape, and how people rarely work for one employer for an entire career. The ability to shift from opportunity to opportunity will be increasingly important and, therefore, understanding how you might shape your education and a career with that in mind is paramount. Friends, as educators, as parents of girls, and as girls, this is all very, very true.

And it is also true that women have been doing this from the beginning. We have been doing this because of our partners, our children, and our parents. This is not new to us at all. I watch with awe the women in my life who have carved paths across decades, driven by their talents and their curiosities foremost, but also by their families and other realities of life. I myself have encountered these big and small surprises, and my life has taken a number of academic, personal, and professional turns for many reasons. Through it all, it is my membership in a girls community that carries me. I was once a student at an all-girls school, the National

It took a little while to both find that next-bestfit girls’ school opportunity and be ready to embrace it, but arrive it did. Now I find myself in Virginia, daily inspired by the students, the programs, and the people of Chatham Hall. I cherish the sisterhood. I find a kindred spirit with girls’ schools everywhere who do the work, who demonstrate the impact, and who prove the value of what it means to give space for a girl toward her highest and healthiest levels of thinking and being.

Chatham Hall welcomed historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin as our sixteenth Leader in Residence, a signature program to engage high-profile female leaders with our girls in deep, lasting ways. I swelled with pride to hear her reflect on her time with us:

“You’re very lucky to have found this place,” she said to the girls. “You all seem alive at a time when teenagers can be quite cynical—this place has enlivened your curiosity, and you can take that with you throughout your days.”

Sure, girls’ schools have been doing the girl-first work that so many others have not been brave enough to do—some of us for 125 years or more.

And even still, in this time, we can feel a new wave in learning, in discourse, in work, and in parenting. And I know that girls’ schools will continue to be ahead of the curve, embracing this new wave, because we have always known we must work with the girl and with her world in order for her to be her best self. The girls we teach today and tomorrow will value the competencies we instill in them in ways we can’t even grasp yet. I know this because I live it now twice over, both as a product and provider of girls’ education, and I am ever grateful for what my girls education continues to teach me. There’s no place I’d rather be.

Cathedral School in Washington, D.C. Afterwards, I studied and lived life with my female classmates at the women’s college Wellesley. But it was at Emma Willard School, under the mentorship of my Head of School and former NCGS Board President Trudy Hall, that I was given multiple opportunities to lead, to understand the necessity and power of girls’ education, and to see how one woman modeled female leadership to an entire community.

1940 Eugenia Lovett West At 96, I feel lucky to still be able to write and publish. Sarah’s War, a historical novel, was published last April, and Firewall, the third in the Emma Streat mystery series, was published in November 2019.

1941 Nancy Campbell Hays A retrospective of Nancy’s photography showed October 27-December 31, 2019 at the Hyde Park Historical Society, Chicago.

An activist and preservationist, Nancy Hays’ photography embodies the ethos of Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood. In 1958 at the age of 35, Hays arrived in Chicago from New York City where she had studied photography and established herself professionally.

She settled in Hyde Park and worked as a photographer for the Hyde Park Herald, crafted innovative advertising campaigns for the Hyde Park Cooperative Society, and loved to wander the local streets and lakefront capturing the authentic spirit of Hyde Park. Her photography made her a Hyde Park legend.

They are all wonderful. The majority of the young are male, so I doubt if I will have any Chatham Hall great-grandchildren.

I will celebrate my 90th birthday in Hawaii where I have located a facility with a central building for gatherings and meals which is surrounded by cabins, for all of my relatives who will be joining me.

1947 Mervyn Adams Seldon The wonderful news – I am now included in the “Who’s Who in American Art.” What a great honor.

1948 Lillian Lineberger McKay I had a wonderful 65 years of marriage to my husband, Peter, who died this past year. We both spent many good years involved at Chatham Hall. I live at Southminister Retirement Center in Charlotte, NC. I have three great children; one daughter is a doctor who lives in Charlotte, NC, a son, who is a photographer in Williamston, MA, and the third is a daughter, a CPA Tax Accountant in Edwards, CO. There are four grandchildren and two great grandsons, both little boys are one year old and such a delight!

I spend my time happily reading, exercising, playing bridge, and entertaining. I spend May until October in Linville, in the North Carolina mountains, where I have several Chatham friends. I have luckily survived several serious illnesses - a very grateful and fortunate Chatham Hall girl.

1950 Kathleen Herty Brown Wow! Too many exciting moments in my life. Our Chatham Hall Senior Quartet’s first public performance in 1950. Having a song in a Smith College Rally Day Show, studying jazz with John Mehegan at Juilliard, marriage, and children. Choirs in Winchester MA, Binghamton NY, Princeton NJ, and Lewes, DE. Being in an Off-Broadway show for a year and then seeing it reproduced back at Chatham. Making a funny commercial for Heinz Gravy and 30 years later seeing it on YouTube.

I sang with the Shore Jazz Band at the Rehoboth Jazz Festival with a super piano player. Thanks to Chatham for preparing me for such joy and fun. Singing and laughing with Mixed Blessings. Arranging for and leading a chorus of seniors called the Elder Moments. Now with most singing, single or group, curtailed, I am down to once a week, outdoors, masked with my 12 SATB a capella group Mixed Blessings.

Appropriately spaced, we feel happier after 10 or more songs and we sound pretty good! Shades of Senior Quartet. Getting happy and interesting letters and e-mails from my children. And now I’m a greatgrandmother.

1950 Sally Dunham Davis I am still living in my house in Savannah, GA with one of my sons. He is great company since my husband passed. I had a nice conversation with Cynnie Murray Henriques ’50. I am doing well.

1950 Elizabeth Barker Frank I am busy now with the League of Women Voters and have been a volunteer for many years, but hope to get a younger person to take over.

1950 Nancy Gwathmey Harris I spent six weeks at my place in NE Harbor, Maine this summer and now I am back in PA for the winter.

1950 Cynthia Murray Henriques I am doing OK with this new way of living, as we all try to. My kids have been great, appreciate having my youngest son living nearby.

My son Michael is in his last year as Head at Proctor Academy in Andover, NH where he’s been Head of School since 2005. I keep active enough with my music, volunteering at Skyline Farm Carriage Museum, and keeping in touch with my neighbors here at Ocean View Retirement Community in Falmouth, ME. My Jack Russell Terrier keeps me company! And tries to boss me around!

1950 Mary Griswold Horrigan I’m in an assisted living in Portsmouth NH, cheery but frustrated by the COVID-19 lockdown, I miss seeing people, don’t we all. The dining room is closed and all meals are brought to my room. Lucky to have two of my three kids living nearby, and the other one lives in MA. 1950 Ellen Childs Lovejoy I spent the summer at my farm in New Hampshire, and I’m doing well after the loss of my husband George earlier this summer.

1950 Ellen MacVeagh Rublee I lost my husband, George, on August 20. It is a big adjustment but I am well, and I have lots of support from my kids.

John and I met with Edison Eskeets, the Navajo who was to have played the title character in Laughing Boy back when we all thought it would be a movie. Edison now represents the Hubble Trading Post at Ganados, AZ. It was while my parents visited Lorenzo Hubble in 1929 that the Pulitzer Prize for Laughing Boy was announced. 1951 Ann Cochran McCandless Nothing new here - I live in the same place but I do have a new dog (a rescue) named Louie, who keeps me going. He has more energy than expected! My best to all my classmates.

1954 Jane De Hart I’m delighted to report that events related to the publication of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, A Life, have continued. I’m winding up with a presentation at the Organization of American Historians in Philadelphia and then heading off to Princeton for reunions with old Princeton friends, a lecture at the Woodrow Wilson Center for the Law and Democracy Program, and events connected with the Princeton Library and Labyrinth Books Celebration of the Book. In May, my husband and I headed off to Durham, NC where, to my total surprise and delight, the Duke Graduate School bestowed upon me its 2019 Distinguished Alumna Award. The occasion afforded not only my first visit back to the Research Triangle since 1991 when we moved to Santa Barbara, but also a tour of the much-expanded Duke campus full of new buildings and new opportunities for students.

It all leaves me feeling immensely appreciative of the intellectual stimulus that Chatham Hall and Duke provided so many years ago and the enduring friendships forged here and at Princeton. I returned from Columbus, Ohio where I was the featured speaker at the Ohio Bar Association meeting.

In October, my husband and I are looking forward to a week of theatre and opera, along with visits with friends. And in November we will go to Boston for the annual meeting of the American Society for Legal History where I am on the program. Since Jerry lived in Boston for many years, the trip also affords an opportunity to renew old friendships.

1954 Caroline Ramsay Merriam My husband, Duke Merriam, and I continue to live in the Georgetown section of Washington, D.C. We have three living children, seven grandchildren, and five greatgrandchildren. We go to France in July and Jamaica in February.

1954 Caroline Young Moore We took a wonderful family trip to Africa (13 of us) for an 18-day safari. Love living in Carbondale, CO and I’m still spending time during the spring and fall at the Martha’s Vineyard home. Sadly our son Stephan passed away this past July. I have a beautiful great granddaughter.

1955 Louanna Owens Carlin Trying to keep walking after a time of difficulty. Otherwise fine and still in Brooklyn with a spot in my apartment for any Chathamites coming to the Big Apple.

1956 Joday Litton Blevins My granddaughter is getting married next May, I hope I won’t be wearing a mask!

1957 Claire Gardner Robinson Second bout of breast cancer successfully GONE! Hurray! Life with fiance, Ken Sennett, continues to be lovely. Enjoyed a trip to D.C. in April and spent the summer at his place in Maine, plus some side trips.

We continue to sing with a local chorus of some 80 people, several concerts a year. Wonderful to have my children (and grandchildren, and GREATgrandchildren) all nearby and doing well in their own styles. So, no complaints. I turned 80 in March and loving it!

All my family is healthy - the most important thing. I spent time at our place on Long Lake in Bridgton, Maine, the only place we went this past summer. Otherwise we are still back and forth between my house in Marshfield Hills and Ken’s in Middleboro.

1956 Marcia Pyle Welch Moved to Vero Beach, FL in October 2018. My five daughters and nine grandchildren visit me and are supportive. I’m healthy with the exception of the frequent squamous cells due to youth of sun and swimming without sunscreen. I am a board member of the Nantucket Atheneum, for my 12th year.

Apologies to my classmates that I couldn’t work on this longer (I could have given us all facelifts!) but I got really busy with too many exhibitions and projects. Although this isn’t flattering of anybody, it does capture the spirit of our joyous occasion! My primary activity these days is being an emotional support and caregiver for my husband with advancing Parkinson’s, but I’m still very much an artist. Life is good, Joe and I are well (for the moment!) and we are loving Piper Shores, the retirement community we are living in, in Scarborough, Maine.

Delightful people, good food, beautiful surroundings, good health care - what more, really, could we ask? We have both gotten involved with various committees, I help out with church services now and then, and do some pastoral visiting. We are both very much involved with our church in Cape Elizabeth, we both play bridge, and one of the funnest things we do is to be part of a Shakespeare group every Friday to read plays aloud. Just finishing up Henry IV part II. Love it! There is so much to do around here, and in Portland, that we are rarely bored.

1960 Eleanore Lee My husband Ron and I are still living in Berkeley, CA. He still has his psychiatric practice, including some time weekly at the Student Health Service on the Berkeley campus. I’m fully retired from my university work and am just engaged in my own writing. I will give publishing my novel a try when I finish revising it. (It’s even harder than it used to be these days.) I’m also writing poetry and just had one accepted by Euphony Journal - the literary journal at the University of Chicago, which pleased me. I have four grandchildren. The oldest one is 27, the youngest is 3. Quite a range! I’m looking forward to the reunion. I hope you all consider coming, even if it isn’t something you normally do.

1960 Anne Moffitt Looking forward to our 60th Reunion, our 50th was such fun and I hope more will come. I’m involved in my community and church, learning and growing. Focus is now on the environment and how we together, even at our age, can make a difference to cut down on waste.

Now retired we have time, if not always as much energy or mobility.

It is an education process and an awakening as to what we and others of all ages can do positively. Here we are phasing out styrofoam and learning about which plastics are made of fibers and are compostable, learning about living roofs, and what’s being done by companies like Ford who use over a billion recycled bottles to make light carriage parts. A whole new world out there if we stay alert and pass it on, even if some like me are less than proficient in technology and don’t use Facebook.

What heartbreaking times these are, when many, bereft of everything through fire or hurricane, are challenged by further risk in shelters during the pandemic.

1960 Lucy Wise Iliff Even though I am locked down, I seem to be leading a different life than most of you, still having my full time job with the three boating magazines I work for. For the first two weeks we all went home to work but there was very little work, and we were terrified that the magazines would run out of money. But then the government loans came through and we’ve been working to catch up, contacting advertisers and subscribers, a couple of times not being able to go to print. We made a big push with our magazines on line and we have virtual meetings twice a week.

At least it gives me something to do at home besides gardening. A number of our delivery stops have closed. This is a business that was doing spectacularly well just in the beginning of March. My son is an emergency room doctor at the local hospital and he has taken a big cut in his pay. I’ll keep working as long as the magazine is solvent.

1962 Priscilla Pugh Kirkpatrick Hope my fellow classmates are doing well - or at least well for 75 years old! Who would have thunk it! I’m still having a few adventures and still enjoying learning. Last fall I headed to Spain on a trip with the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust. We studied the works of Antonio Gaudi in Barcelona and the Guggenheim satellite museum by Frank Gehry in Bilbao, along with works by other contemporary architects there.

What a year this has been! My big splurge of two trips to Europe cancelled, locked down for four months, all routines changed, and learning to live in a mask as well as a bubble! My husband and I have avoided COVID-19, and that’s what counts. I hope you and yours have also stayed healthy. As the 60th anniversary of our graduation grows closer, I reflect on how much our world has changed, and in what ways I have and haven’t changed along with it. An interesting exercise! Hi to all.

1962 Nuna Washburn MacDonald Headed for a new knee, hope it is worth it. All is well so far, mostly still staying home but enjoying catching up on property maintenance and having a container veggie garden since we’re not traveling.

1963 Susan Beekman Clough I’m still in Lancaster, PA with my decorative arts business focusing more on restoring faux painted objects of furniture, and creating new or restoring water & oil-based Gold projects. For the past two years I have been a substitute teacher for our public school systems. It can get crazy but I actually enjoy it; middle and high school students help me miss my seven grandchildren less, who live in NJ, CT, and MA. Also, I hope by brushing up on the varied classes, my brain will be stimulated enough not to need Bridge classes!

1963 Anne Clement Haddad After 50 years in Kuwait my husband Charles has now retired and returned to Connecticut, where I’ve been providing a base for our children since the Gulf War. We are now enjoying retirement together and spending time with children and grandchildren. We’ve sold our house of 30 years and purchased property in Durham, CT with a historic farmhouse for the Moshers and a studio apartment for us. We have disbursed the majority of our belongings to our children and are happily ensconced in our new digs. We are rapidly falling in love with the beautiful rolling hills and orchards of Durham. We love living with our daughter Jennifer and her family, and we feel very, very blessed.

1965 Susan Farwell Houston Our latest adventure is putting a “tiny house” in one of the pastures - available for friends, relatives, and Chatham Hall people passing through! Getting together this winter with a bunch of classmates looking forward to the gathering!

I have built and finally moved into my wonderful, energy-efficient dream house (it’s my “take me out in a box” house – I’m not intending to move again). My life is full – I’ve accepted too many board positions, but there is not one I’d give up. I ascended to Chair of the Board of the Bennington Museum, Bennington, VT, last July, just after we launched a search for a new Executive Director. This was not the job I’d signed up for. But now, six months in, we have hired a new ED and I am working harder than ever. We are a wonderful regional museum of art, history, and innovation. Southwestern Vermont has always been a hotbed of creative endeavors from Ethan Allan and his Green Mountain Boys, to the industrial revolution with the textile mills and other manufacturing (did you know Kiddie Cars were manufactured in North

1968 Annie Clarke Ager I am so glad to see all of my classmates and I recognize everyone. Great 50th Reunion!

Wonderful friends for a lifetime.

How do we get to be 70? I am still feeling maybe about 50. We are very fortunate in our lockdown mode here where we have lots of family and friends nearby. I’m also still teaching horseback riding to little girls. After they can walk, trot, and canter I send them to a neighbor who can hone their skills! I am also on the Friends of the Library board here and have made lots of new acquaintances even in a place where I have lived all of my life!

We are so fortunate to have had our Chatham Hall experience and learning to live together in a small place. John is running again for the North Carolina Legislature House District 115 here in Buncombe County. He says, the most power

he has is that the Department of Transportation will always call him back when he calls! Getting peoples roads paved is one of the main jobs of a legislator! We have a great state here in North Carolina and we need to keep it that way!

In February my niece and I went to Laurie Nussdorfer’s ’68 mothers funeral (Aunt Jess). What a wonderful celebration of life, giving us confidence as we move on! May we be so gracious when we are in our 90s! If we make it!

1968 Kathryn Carter Jacobs It was great being on campus in May, 2019 for our 125th Anniversary - it’s always a joy to return to our alma mater! Congrats to the Class of 1969 for an impressive turnout to celebrate their 50th reunion. Wayne and I have just returned from the 8th Armored Division reunion in Philadelphia. My father served as a tank commander in the 36th Tank Battalion and I have published his story on a dedicated website for any of you who may be interested: www.carterww2.com. We’re on our way next month to Central Europe for a cruise on the Danube. All is well with our family and daughters, Susan and Sarah are thriving in career pursuits. As time goes by, I find I treasure my dear, lifelong friendships. All will be well. Members of the Class of 1968 had a blast on May 26th in a Zoom gathering. Several classmates that we had not seen since graduation!

We instantly popped back to June 3, 1968 with fun old stories and catching up to the present days of COVID-19 and everyday life as 70 year olds! We will do this again!

I also did a short film called Tryptich (it might be on You Tube) and for fun have just been playing with the cats and hoping things will get better all around. 1969 Lee Wulsin Roberts Even though I am living happily ever after in the charming Gold Rush town of Nevada City, CA, I am embarking on the trip-of-alifetime to Ethiopia in March 2020. I published a book about Ethiopia 35 years ago called Roots of Ras Tafari (available as an eBook on Amazon, BTW), but have never been there.

So I finally get to see the ancient city of Axum (where the Ark of the Covenant allegedly resides), Lake Tana (headwaters of the Blue Nile & home of the Falashas), as well as Lalibela, where 11 churches are carved literally out of the mountain (recently featured on 60 Minutes).

And then there’s the Ethiopian jazz scene in Addis Ababa. Stay turned, there may just be a book update!

1969 Ann Watson I’m enjoying researching and writing about my family history, and taking care of my granddaughters. I enjoyed our 50th reunion!

1970 Olivia Sprunt Dowell It was a challenging summer to operate our residential camp! We were able to have a five week season with great success and COVID-19 free! In 27 years of operation, we have never had such an experience.

The Bear Track staff and campers (and families) all embraced the new protocols and welcomed the chance for a spot of normalcy in their lives. Certainly feeling blessed and thankful!

My husband Ladd retired in 2008 from the State Department after 22 years, and we were happy to stay in one place for a while. I just celebrated 25 years in residential real estate in the northern Virginia/ D.C. area, and am still going strong!

I was named for the fourth time as one of the area’s top agents by Washingtonian magazine. Our daughter Mollie, 32, was married in 2018, and this year received her masters in sustainable landscape design at George Washington University. Our son Ben is a musician/songwriter based in LA, going under the professional name of Hovey Benjamin. Check him out on YouTube!

1974 Anne Wynn Weissinger My husband and I will be celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary this year. Time flies when you are having fun. My husband and I have three children, four grandchildren, six nieces and nephews, seven great grand nieces and nephews We have a very large, extended family.

1975 Julia Morris Kashkashian I continue to enjoy retired life, though where the days go I’m not certain. This will no doubt only get worse! Over the December holidays my family was at our home in Yanceyville, NC where Joan Womble Stone ’75 and her husband Doug joined us for lunch and a hike in the woods. We caught up and made plans for our upcoming 45th reunion. I caught up with Sarah Martin Finn ’74 over lunch in Denver. We schemed about a future lunch in the area whenever Rector Rachel Connell makes it to the Rocky Mountains. Susan Bruce ’75 visited for a socially distant picnic lunch on the porch at my home outside Boulder, CO. We marvel at the many Chatham alumnae who are juggling work, parenting, and home life in these difficult times. 1980 Allison Sutton Fuqua My husband Randy just completed a full thru hike of the Appalachian Trail - 2,190 miles. I hiked the summit with him in Maine. So proud of him. He completed the journey in September.

1984 Lisa Richmond Lisa’s daughter Jaz Leddy ’20 participated in the Climate Design Lab - a three week paid program in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools that engaged students in a competition to research, design, and develop forward-thinking solutions to climate change. “I was so impressed how in just three short weeks the program coordinators shifted this group of kids into climate change problem identifiers, solvers, climate design implementers and even further, potential community leaders. 1985 Teri Coleman Martinez Just wanted to share a few updates with you of what’s been going on with me. The pandemic and being separated from my husband has been challenging but also very productive. Thus far I have managed to change jobs virtually, publish four books, and I am very happy that I have been able to reconnect with my Chatham family.

I am now a member of the Alumnae Council, I serve as the class agent and I have facilitated two journaling workshops, one for the Office of Advancement and another for the Class of 2024. I’m adjusting to this new way of life slowly but surely.

1988 Kara Mennen-Bossert This past May I was treated with true Southern hospitality at the home of my former roommate Garnett Wilbourn Hutton ’88 in her hometown of Memphis. It had been close to 20 years since we had seen each other, and I so enjoyed meeting her family and seeing her again. I’m hoping we won’t let that many years go by again without getting together. I continue to see Laura Mascharka Brucker ’88 on a regular basis as well, and even more so that our sons are in the same school and are friends. This coming year marks a true milestone year for me with my 50th birthday, my 25th wedding anniversary, and a college and high school graduation. I am looking forward to the next phase of my life as an empty nester and hope to get back to using my interior design degree in some capacity. photo At right

Manchester, NH. I specialize in psychiatric/mental health crisis with experience in both the Emergency Department and Acute Inpatient Unit. In 2015 I met my match: a handsome young dental student named Andrew (and his cat, Irving). Andrew was quickly absorbed into my large family and it wasn’t long before he graduated dental school, we got engaged, and we adopted another cat. I graduated nursing school and we moved to New Hampshire. On January 1, 2020 we tied the knot in front of family and friends, including Noelle Wilton ’14, Deja Flowers ’14, and Erin Dixon ’15 at Birch Wood Vineyards in Derry, NH. Mary Applegate Reigeluth Fisher ’36 passed away on July 29, 2019. She is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Reigeluth Parker ’64.

Farley Walton Whetzel ’40 passed away on January 26, 2019.

She is survived by her sister Mary Walton Curley ’42.

Chatham Hall extends our deepest sympathies upon the passing of Reverend William Reeves on September 16, 2019. Rev. Reeves served as Rector of Chatham Hall from 1971-1976.

Born in Southport, CT on September 3, 1934, Bill attended Phillips Academy Andover before earning an undergraduate degree from Yale University, a masters degree in East Asian Studies from Harvard University and a Master of Divinity from The Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, MA. He began his teaching career at New Asia College in Hong Kong. In 1963, following his ordination to the Episcopal Ministry, he moved to Honolulu, HI where he served as head of the Religion Department and director of admissions and college counseling at Iolani, an Episcopal day school. During his time in Honolulu, he became a champion of contemporaneous social justice issues. In 1970, Bill was named Rector of Chatham Hall. During his tenure he also served as both chaplain and religion teacher. In 1976, he became Headmaster of the Collegiate Boys School in Richmond, VA, a position he held for a decade before heading the middle school for five years and then becoming director of faculty development and senior ethics teacher. A good and faithful servant of Virginia Independent Schools and Episcopal schools beyond, he will be dearly missed.

Bill was predeceased by his grandson, Zackary Reeves Dolan. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jane Weisenbarger Reeves; and three children, William H. Reeves of Honolulu, HI (Debbie Berger), Hannah Reeves Cook of Carlisle, MA (Tom Cook), Molly Reeves Dolan of Richmond (Matt Dolan); as well as three grandchildren, Eliana Jade Reeves, Kiara Lily Reeves and Wila Sage Reeves Cook. He is also survived by his sisters, Carol Parke of Richmond and Ann Reeves of Redding, CT; and 13 nieces and nephews.

A Message for our Donors What an interesting year 2019-2020 proved to be! In the fall, Chatham Hall invested a new Rector welcoming Rachel Avery Connell. We had visions of what the year would hold, but then COVID-19 disrupted the world.

Throughout the spring we came to know what it truly means to be a community. We became proficient in the use of remote meeting technology and this alone opened doors to new ways of connecting with one another.

Together we participated in a virtual 5K, weekly Cookie Breaks, and mindfulness practices. Our Class of 2020 students were celebrated in a virtual Commencement.

And, you, our community of donors, recognized the value of a Chatham Hall experience for students today. You continued to believe in our mission. You demonstrated your deep loyalty and incredible generosity by continuing to support the Annual Fund, the endowment, and other special capital projects.

Together we accomplished much. The Annual Fund launched in the fall with 100% participation by the maintenance and grounds teams and ultimately 100% participation by all employees. Those who are “in the weeds” (pun intended) with the School can see the magic that happens within this community each and every day, and we are grateful to them. The Annual Fund supports our people, our programs, and our physical plant. Because of your support for the Annual Fund, we were able to garner the resources to respond to the global pandemic by making early investments in technology, professional development for teachers, and equipment for the health of the community. More investments will need to be made.

Community is an essential ingredient in the magic that takes place here. As a community, we care for one another and the spaces that enable us to gather. We value the programs which foster a love of learning and the chance to discover one’s passion. We express gratitude to our donors, mostly individuals, who enable us to continue to deliver our mission. You set an example for our young alumnae and others who follow in your footsteps. Inspired by your gifts, the graduating Class of 2020 joined with the Class of 2019 and demonstrated care for our community by replacing worn furnishings in the Niche. Parents and grandparents of the Class of 2020 provided seed money for forests and fields. With a loving spirit, this community cares for its people, programs, and physical plant.

Elizabeth Acevedo, 2019-2020 Writer in Residence On February 10 and 11, best-selling and popular author Elizabeth Acevedo visited Chatham Hall as this year’s Writer-in-Residence.

Acevedo is an award-winning novelist whose follow-up novel to her National Book Award winning debut, The Poet X, With the Fire on High, explores creative talent and leadership through food and cooking.

In recognition of her many contributions to the school, Chatham Hall seeks to endow the Writer in Residence Program to name it in honor of Claudia Emerson ’75 who twice served as the Writer In Residence. A native of Chatham, Claudia Emerson later served as Dean and English teacher at her alma mater. She was recognized as the Poet Laureate of Virginia and was the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize. Claudia Emerson passed away December 4, 2014.

The Chatham Hall Distinguished Alumna Award was established in 2010 to recognize distinguished graduates representing diverse professions and interests. The Distinguished Alumna Award recognizes Chatham Hall graduates who embody the characteristics and values of Chatham Hall, such as honor, respect, and integrity.

Jane Sherron De Hart ’54 is professor of history emerita at the University of California, Santa Barbara. A celebrated historian and scholar, her work shined a spotlight on the pivotal role women have played in history, politics, and the legal system. Her most recent book, Ruth Bader Ginsburg: A Life, was published in 2018 and was hailed as “monumental,” “compelling,” and a “vivid account of a remarkable life.”

Since graduating from Chatham Hall in 1954, she has blazed a path for women both in the classroom and out—pioneering women’s studies programs and shaping our understanding of the role women have played in the cultural and historical fabric of our nation.

De Hart’s publications include The Federal Theatre: Plays, Relief, and Politics; Women’s America: Refocusing the Past; and Sex, Gender, and the Politics of ERA. Jane De Hart is committed to service as well as scholarship and has served on numerous boards and as a student mentor. She lives with her husband Benjamin J. “Jerry” Cohen, in Santa Barbara, California.

Claudia Emerson ’75 was a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and the 2008 Virginia Poet Laureate.

Emerson celebrated her love for Chatham Hall through her poetry and advocacy. Her ties to Chatham Hall run deep. In addition to her time as a student, she was the academic dean and head of the English Department from 1996-1998, and served on the Board of Trustees from 1998-2004.

She shared her love of writing as the Writer in Residence in its inaugural year 2003-2004 and again in 20082009. An ardent ambassador for the School, she celebrated her love for Chatham Hall through her poetry and advocacy.

“We remember Claudia as quiet but very strong. She was wise, brave, and humble. She was a natural and gifted teacher, and available to any who sought her out. We remember her infectious grin, lovely southern accent, and love for her guitar and music. We’ll never forget her reading selections from the yet to be published Figure Studies during a Reunion Chapel service.”

Emerson was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in poetry in 2006 for her third collection of poetry, Late Wife, a series of poems examining one woman’s emotional and personal overlap of past and present. In 2008, she was selected as Poet Laureate of Virginia.

Most recently a professor of English at Virginia Commonwealth University, Emerson was previously a professor and the Arrington Distinguished Chair in Poetry at the University of Mary Washington, where she taught from 1998-2013. After graduating from the University of Virginia with a degree in English, she managed the First Edition used bookstore in Danville and worked as a rural mail carrier. She went on to graduate school and earned a master’s degree in poetry from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Claudia Emerson passed away on December 4, 2014. Emerson would have celebrated her 40th Reunion on May 2, 2015 with the Class of 1975.

Members of the Class of 1975 have contributed seed money to launch a fund drive to name the Claudia Emerson Writer in Residence Program at Chatham Hall.

One measure of a school’s strength is the presence of a healthy endowment. With a June 30, 2020 combined value exceeding $58 million, the endowment is comprised of a multiplicity of funds from which an annual draw is taken to support Chatham Hall people, programs, and facilities. Guided by donor intent and policies set by the Board of Trustees, these endowed funds are managed by investment professionals. Unrestricted endowment funds afford the leadership of the School the flexibility to allocate resources to meet ever-changing priorities on a year-to-year basis.

hatham Hall alumna Imani Brooks ’16 participated in the keynote panel discussion on “Creating Change, One Girl at a Time” at the 2020 National Coalition of Girls’ Schools (NCGS) virtual conference Stand Up, Speak Up: Girls Using Their Voices to Engage, Empower, & Enact on June 24.

More than 400 educators, researchers, and girls’ education advocates from seven countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, United Kingdom, and United States, participated in the virtual conference. The panel also featured Global Chief of Adolescent Development and Participation at UNICEF Jumana Haj-Ahmad and Founder of PERIOD Nadya Okamoto and was moderated by Executive Director of Girl Up Melissa Kilby.

In addition to Chatham Hall, Brooks is a graduate of Emory University, as well as a member of the NCGS. Brooks is currently pursuing a JD at American University. Brooks was a 2015-2016 Girl Up teen advisor and is an advocate for women’s and girls’ rights as a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., working in Swaziland, South Africa, and Georgia.

ily Fulop ’14 has published Wear, Repair, Repurpose with Countryman Press/W.W. Norton & Company. Subtitled “A maker’s guide to mending and upcycling clothes,” the book is intended for a range of audiences: sewing novices looking for a place to start, anyone who cares about sustainability and wants to tackle throw-away culture, and vintage fashion lovers and thrifters interested in rescuing old clothes.

Fulop, who majored in visual communication design at Carnegie Mellon University, currently works as a designer for Refinery29. Her interest in textiles dates back to childhood when she began knitting, crocheting, and sewing. While at Chatham Hall, Fulop received an iQuest grant to support an independent study in graphic design during senior year.

“I learned about composition, typography, and web design,” she said. “It was a great experience to get a head start in the subject area before arriving at my design program the following year for college. It was also really valuable to practice self-directed study and take control of my own learning.”

For Fulop, the publication of Wear, Repair, Repurpose is just the beginning. She’s hoping to continue to find ways to intertwine her interests and balance her career as a visual designer with her passion for sustainable craft and clothing.
