As I sit beneath glowing lights and enjoy the scent of fresh greenery around campus, I can’t begin to summarize what the first few months of our time together have meant to me. Each moment with you has been spirited, generous, and refreshing—you all help me to know Chatham Hall, her history, her present, her endless potential. Thank you for the warmest welcome, not just in our grand Investiture celebrations, but in each conversation, each meal shared, and each idea sparked together.

During our first semester together, I am witnessing firsthand how academic curiosity and achievement abounds. In addition to the curated classroom atmosphere that is a hallmark of the Chatham Hall experience, students like Whitney Byington ’22 are diving into topics they are passionate about and formulating deep, meaningful conclusions. Under the guidance of beloved faculty, Whitney interviewed watershed conservation groups about the steps being taken to protect the resources in her beloved hometown of Birmingham, Alabama.

In other words, these Discovery Challenges allow our girls to design projects that have them seeking answers to their own essential questions, often related to critical topics of the day.

Under the leadership of our new Director of Athletics, Laura Clay, all of our fall athletic teams competed in more games than in recent years, and our Field Hockey team won the 2019 conference championship! Sarah Miller-Richards ’20, who will play collegiately next fall, and the Field Hockey team are shining examples of a pipeline of strong teams and players gaining traction and buzz. Likewise, we continue to celebrate elite riders both individually and as a team. And, our winter and spring sports are proving to be just as compelling.

Fall dance and theater performances were breathtaking. The girls took on the complex darkness of Dracula and Lord of the Flies with maturity and skill. To see these girls excel in arenas outside the classroom broadens my understanding of each of them and reminds me that excellence—and, more important, learning—has many faces and happens in many places. And yes, Catherine Malone ’22, our Dracula en pointe in a sweeping red cape, was more than a little spooky!

Life on campus is friendly and robust. Our dorms are places striving to create relationship and community, where girls have the space they need to build competencies that will take them far as neighbors, family members, friends, and coworkers in the future. Being a teenage girl has never been simple, and perhaps in 2019-2020 it is more complicated than ever. I am astounded by the dedication of our Honor Council to shape and enrich campus life. And, of course, none of this would be happening without the web of support that our faculty, counselors, tutors, administrators, coaches, and other adults create to make this possible each and every day.

Your involvement with Chatham Hall rings true and clear. Our current families devote their efforts to welcome new Chatham Hall families and serve as proponents for the school among prospective families. We have dedicated alumnae who serve, volunteer, host, and connect with one another and back to Chatham Hall. Plus, dozens of legacy connections among current students speak to the strength of your interconnectedness. And, we have a wise, hard-working Board of Trustees that is doing the work to ensure that Chatham Hall will have all she needs now and in the future.

In my travels and visits this fall, many of you asked what you can do for Chatham Hall. And, simply put, you can be our champions! What we need most is for you to continue to advocate for and support our mission to empower each girl to be her best self for the world. We have always been a girls school, not just a school that happens to have girls in it. This means, by our very design, we must evolve for girls and their families.

As champions for the school, I ask you to consider these specific ways to help. Connect a potential student and her family to our Office of Admission. I find myself wondering if we have been a “best kept secret” for too long. We simply have too much to offer a girl for that to continue.

Demonstrate the value of your Chatham Hall experience in your personal and digital communities: generate positive buzz for us on social media, add us to your bio, share our good news. And, most foundationally, give to the Annual Fund. It is essential as we go well beyond tuition dollars to create an extraordinary experience for our girls and to support the adults that make that experience possible.

Just before Thanksgiving, we welcomed Doris Kearns Goodwin, renowned historian and author, to campus for the 2019-2020 Polly Wheeler Guth ’44 Leader in Residence Program. She glowed in each session, and so did the girls. Although much of her research and writing is about American presidents, I was most struck by her anecdotes about Eleanor Roosevelt (Kearns Goodwin was tickled that she stayed in the Rectory where Roosevelt herself stayed when visiting campus decades ago). “Eleanor Roosevelt would be very proud of all of you,” she said to the girls. “She blossomed at a boarding school like yours and developed her sense of self. Life is not going to be an easy path, but continue to seek the things that make you feel accomplished and do things to ensure that you are contributing to the world around you.”

In the pages that follow, you’ll see the groups and the individuals like you who care for and invest in this special place. Friends, we are realizing what is possible together. As Eleanor Roosevelt so aptly said, “We do not have to become heroes overnight. Just a step at a time.” Thank you.

Welcome to the 2018-2019 Annual Report. I am honored, humbled, and proud to share in the excitement and dedication each one of you shows through your gifts and investments in Chatham Hall. These pages take us on a journey to recognize every leader, every participant, every thoughtful donor, and every voice that makes Chatham Hall a priority in their philanthropy and in their engagement. The impact of your gifts is much greater than the sum of the parts: together, your gifts elevate our programs, expand opportunities for our faculty and students, and help us grow our longterm resources.

When I reflect on all of the changing (and growing) needs of an adolescent girl, I can’t help but be reminded of how Chatham Hall is cultivating a world-class experience for all of the girls who walk our hallways today—and for the girls who will come to know Chatham Hall in the years ahead. And, I’m reminded of my travels and conversations over the last year with so many of you. Together we celebrated and continue to celebrate our 125th year, and the enduring sentiment remains. This is a school that knows girls. And because of your support, we are proud to be a place that lifts girls to higher and healthier levels of thinking and being.

The Annual Report demonstrates a healthy school on the rise. Chatham Hall’s financial position remains strong: the Benefactors Society is 259 members strong, and 41 of those are at the Founder’s or Rector’s Circle level. Annual Fund gifts complement our portfolio of endowed funds which support students, faculty, and programs. As you go through these pages, I hope you’ll consider a deeper connection with Chatham Hall in the year ahead. Whether it be through growing the impact of your gift through an employer match, visiting campus or attending a regional event, connecting with young alumnae and students through the Chatham Hall Connect online community, setting up a monthly recurring gift, contacting us about your estate plans, or any myriad of other ways to get involved, we are profoundly appreciative of your commitment and your vision. Welcome Alumnae Council Members!

In 2019-2020, the Alumnae Council welcomes 10 new members, ranging from the Class of 1979 to the Class of 2014. These intelligent, creative, energetic, and giving women engage with Chatham Hall, helping to stay connected with classmates and the greater alumnae community. We look forward to what lies ahead together, and we deeply appreciate the leadership and service of the entire 30-member Alumnae Council.

Ellen Cartmell ’08 Maysville, KY

Ellen is the Executive Director of United Way of Mason County, KY, and a Health Policy Specialist for the Kentucky Department for Public Health. She graduated from Centre College with a degree in French before achieving her Masters of Public Administration with a focus in Community Development and Nonprofit Management. She has worked extensively in public health both domestically and internationally, specifically with the International Red Cross in Switzerland and Congo.

Emmalyn Cochran ’02 Washington, DC

After attending Chatham Hall, Emmalyn went on to pursue a degree in Electrical Engineering from Clemson University. Currently she works as an Electrical Design Manager for NAVFAC Washington. When not working she enjoys spending time with her son, Noah and twin daughters, Langstyn and Emery. Emmalyn and her fiancé currently reside in Washington, DC.

Deja Flowers ’14 Plainfield, NJ

Deja is known to be multifaceted with talents in many areas. During her years at Chatham, she devoted time to writing poetry and hosting Open Mic Nights and was also an original member of the school’s Robotics Team 5086. She continues her love for science and health currently by serving as an EMT and is in school for nursing.

Deja is well on the journey to becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesist (CRNA), a dream she has held since early childhood. Recently, Deja helped start an important conversation regarding student experiences at Chatham Hall, which resulted in the development of the session titled “Reflections on Inclusion and Identity,” held during the 2019 reunion weekend.

Margaret Googe ’09 Knoxville, TN Margaret attended Wake Forest University where she received her B.A. in Elementary Education. After graduating in 2013, she returned to her hometown of Knoxville, TN, to begin her teaching career. In addition to teaching, Margaret worked for two years as the Associate Director of Milton Collins Day Camp at the Arnstein Jewish Community Center. She currently works as a 5th grade English teacher, the middle school girls’ basketball coach, and Athletic Director for The Episcopal School of Knoxville. Margaret and her fiancé, Michael, will be married in Knoxville on September 28, 2019.

Kappy Genieve Gheesling Lapides ’86 Gatlinburg, TN

Kappy has a BFA from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville & Arrowmont School of Arts & Craft in Gatlinburg, TN. During her studies, she opened her first business in the food and beverage industry with her brother. In 1995, she married her husband, William. They have three boys, one son, 23, and two godsons, 22 and 37. They are her big job and big love. In 2018 she trained and earned her RYT-200 Yoga Teacher certification with Yoga Alliance. She believes in the benefits of the practice of Hatha Yoga, mindfulness, and meditation for the health, longevity, balance and wellness of our body, mind, spirit, and souls. Currently she is painting, writing and taking photographs daily, as well as teaching yoga in Gatlinburg, TN. She is a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, stays busy with family and friends and enjoys doing yoga in the forest, on a creek in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Lori is originally from Raleigh, NC. She moved to Missouri after being accepted to the nation’s number one journalism school at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Lori is a Senior Account Executive for Amedisys Home Health, where she has worked for eight years. She received the company’s top honor of Chairman’s Club in 2012 and 2018. Lori and her husband Brandon live in Missouri, where they restored a Heath family farmhouse. They have two daughters, ages 9 and 4, Parker Leigh and Scarlett. Lori is an avid horseback rider as are her daughters, and they own three horses on their farm.

Stephanie Klein-Davis ’79 Roanoke, VA

Stephanie is a full-time photojournalist for “The Roanoke Times,” in Roanoke, VA and freelance photographer for many national publications and universities. She received her B.A. from Tulane University and M.A. from the University of South Carolina. Klein-Davis has been an adjunct faculty member in Photography at Virginia Western Community College for 16 years. Notable among awards she has received are the Dart Journalism Award-Excellence in Reporting on Victims of Violence and the National Architectural Board Award. Her work is in permanent collections of the Taubman Museum of Art and the Harrison Museum of African American Culture. Klein-Davis has two children, Wyeth and Aria, and enjoys competitive road and trail running, book club, hiking, biking, yoga and kayaking.

Dasia Moore ’14 New York, NY

Dasia Moore ’14 is a journalist and writer who currently reports on the global economy for Quartz. Her work has also been published by The Nation and Katie Couric Media. After graduating from Chatham Hall, Dasia studied ethics, politics, and economics at Yale University. There, she served as the sole undergraduate member of a university committee charged with creating guidelines for renaming buildings with fraught histories. True to her Reidsville, NC, and Charleston, SC, roots, Dasia is a co-founder of Go South, a nonprofit that encourages students and their universities to invest time and resources into southern community organizations. She also serves on the board of the Yale Alumni Nonprofit Alliance.

Along with Deja Flowers ’14, Dasia planned the inclusion and identity workshop at the 2019 reunion and looks forward to helping create a more inclusive Chatham Hall.

Rebecca Smith Perdu ’10 Charleston, SC

Rebecca earned her B.A. in Historic Preservation at the University of Mary Washington. During her time at UMW, Rebecca participated on the Women’s NCAA Rowing Team, serving as the captain her senior year. Since graduation, Rebecca has worked in fundraising at private schools in both East Hampton, NY, and Middleburg, VA; the Tech Industry in Charlottesville, VA; and has recently landed at Meadors Inc., an architecture, design, and construction firm specializing in historic structures in Charleston, SC. She loves traveling with her husband, Christophe, spending time outdoors (especially on the water), and discovering new places through food.

Amanda Stewart-Gonzalez ’09 New York, NY

Amanda is originally from Costa Rica but has been living in NYC for the past five years. She received her B.A. in Political Science and a double minor in French and International Relations from Boston University. After graduating BU, she worked for the Mission of Costa Rica to the U.N. and found sustainable development to be the axis of her career. She has been able to learn the nonprofit and government aspects of working towards a cleaner and more inclusive future. Amanda recently graduated from Baruch College with a Master of Public Administration.
