Letter from the

ACTING HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Chatham Hall Community, It has been a beautiful fall at Chatham Hall, and our opening semester has been exceptional. We welcomed 51 new girls to our campus, including 31 ninth graders. Our faculty and staff have worked diligently to make sure that our new students are introduced to the many traditions of Chatham Hall and it has been fun watching them blossom.

As a School community, we remain focused on being the best Episcopal girls’ boarding school in the nation. At face value, this doesn’t seem very innovative as it has been a Chatham Hall tagline for 129 years, but underlying our focus is the need to find the best path for girls in the 21st century. It is a balancing act to remain true to what we have always been but to do so in a manner that reflects a dynamic culture and ever-changing social milieu.

Beth Barksdale, dean of the Chapel & Spiritual Life, has done a wonderful job creating thrice weekly Chapel services that are grounded in our Episcopal tradition yet reflective of the diverse faith traditions we have on campus. In particular, she has allowed our girls to have an active role in choosing the music and readings, and has supported their individual faith journeys. Beth has been supported by Mother Becky Crites, Rector at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in town, and by an increased presence of the Rt. Rev. Susan B. Haynes, Bishop of the Diocese of Southern Virginia.

I feel comfortable in saying we are faith-filled and joyous in our diversity.

Our commitment to educating girls never waivers, and that means ensuring that a Chatham Hall graduate will be a successful thought leader in a world that increasingly rewards innovation and novelty. It was a true joy to welcome so many parents and family members into classrooms during Family Day in October to see this in action.

Our students question, wonder, and explore daily, and it’s a privilege to witness them challenging themselves so often during their educational journey on campus.

We remain focused on our boarding school status at a time when so many of our competitors are becoming day student oriented. Presently, we are approximately 67% domestic boarders, 26% international boarders, and 7% day students, a mix that we feel best provides for a variety of student viewpoints and experiences. I believe it is an essential quality of Chatham Hall that we live in a 24-7 community as this produces true friendships for life.

Except for a few hours of sleep, even our day students are an active part of our daily community as well.

There is much happening on campus and I am thankful for the support of our greater community.

2023-2024 School Year Opens with Fall Convocation The annual fall Convocation ceremony took place on Aug. 30, the evening before the first day of classes, and officially kicked off Chatham Hall’s 129th school year.

Held in St. Mary’s Chapel, the ceremony included remarks from Acting Head of School Dr. Chris Proctor, the recognition of students who had achieved Rector’s List and Dean’s List honors, and the naming of those who earned Scholastic Medals with the highest grade point average in each class from the 2022-2023 school year. Scholastic Medal honorees included Marilyn Mack ‘26, Aliah Rodriquez ‘25, Mikaili Madden ‘24, and Mia Swanson ‘24.

Selected by the acting head of school, dean of academics, and dean of students, Priscella Bennsion ‘25 was recognized as the recipient of the Virginia Henry Holt Award due to her “character and deportment, industry and accomplishment, resoluteness and kindness, purpose and exactitude, and grace and good humor.”

During his remarks, Dr. Proctor discussed what it means to be a success and the importance of setting your own goals.

“I don’t want you to let your individual picture of success color your definition,” he said. “Set up some success points that lie along the way towards a greater goal. You’ll find it much easier to reach those goals.

Once you reach them, you can readjust and work for the next goal. Don’t think you have to be great at something to be a success. You can be a success just by meeting your own individual goals.”

This year’s student body includes 122 students making their way to campus from 14 states and 13 countries, including Afghanistan, Austria, Bahamas, China, Egypt, Georgia, Germany, Jamaica, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Spain, and the United States.

Callands Coffee Owners Honored on 33rd Lee-Yardley Day On Sept. 26 during its 33rd Lee-Yardley Day Chatham Hall recognized Jennifer Reynolds and Dean Rogers, coowners of Callands Coffee, with the Alice Overbey Award.

Each year, Chatham Hall recognizes those whose lives have impacted the School on Lee-Yardley Day, named for former Rectors Dr. Edmund J. Lee and Dr. William W. Yardley, who served Chatham Hall for a cumulative 43 years. The Alice Overbey Award is given to individuals from the greater Chatham community for demonstrated, outstanding commitment and service to Chatham Hall.

Overbey was a beloved neighbor, past parent, and former 26-year employee of Chatham Hall.

During the ceremony in St. Mary’s Chapel, Acting Head of School Dr. Chris Proctor and Dean of Academics Martha Griswold spoke about this year’s deserving recipients and their impact on the School community throughout the past several years.

“A trip to Callands Coffee has become central to the student experience at Chatham Hall since 2018 … From an academic perspective, Callands has made themselves available to our student entrepreneurs who learn about local businesses’ opportunities and challenges,” Dr. Proctor said. “You support our students, our teachers, and our extended community by providing a wonderful product with good service and a cheerful greeting. You make a difference not only to the Town of Chatham, but particularly to the daily life of the Chatham Hall community. We are delighted to honor you today.”

As noted by Dr. Proctor and Dean Griswold in their remarks, Callands Coffee is a beloved local coffee shop and roaster frequented by both faculty and students daily. The family-owned and -operated shop located on Main Street Chatham fresh-roasts specialty coffees in small batches, and provides their products to restaurants in the region. They opened in 2018 after establishing themselves at the Competition Alley Farmers Market.

Ruby Inspires as Writer in Residence During this year’s Writer in Residence keynote address, novelist Laura Ruby shared her fascination with the “weird and creepy” with the entire School community in the Van Voorhis Lecture Hall on Sept. 18.

To the theme of “feral child,” Ruby’s address included accounts of her early enamoration of books and storytelling, including telling herself stories while staring outside the window during class.

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a lover of stories … As much as I loved running amuck with my friends, my greatest adventures took place in books,” she said.

An author of mystery and spooky young adult fiction, ghosts, monsters, and “lots and lots of bees” always seem to find their way into Ruby’s stories. Throughout the keynote, she also touched on themes of perseverance and following your own path, even when people don’t understand or support you.

“Read what you love and write what you love…

Everyone has a story, and there’s a million ways to tell them,” Ruby told students. “Your stories are worth telling, your art is worth sharing. You have a unique perspective.”

The presentation, which included a reading from Ruby’s next novel, was followed by a standing ovation, Q&A, and book signing. The next day, Ruby visited classes and met with small groups of students. To prepare for her visit, all incoming ninth grade students read Ruby’s Bone Gap over the summer while Advanced English III students read Thirteen Doorways, Wolves Behind Them All.

“Stories are a shared experience. My books are not complete without the readers,” Ruby said.

Laura Ruby has authored 12 young adult (YA) novels and many other works which have earned myriad accolades, including being recognized as a National Book Award Finalist; winner of the Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature; NPR’s Best YA Novel; Booklist’s Best YA Novel; School Library Journal’s Best YA Novel; Shelf Awareness Best YA Novel; and Book Page’s #1 YA Novel.

Support for the Writer in Residence program is provided through the Chatham Hall endowment.

When fully funded, the program will be named the “Claudia Emerson ’75 Writer in Residence” in tribute to the Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Chatham Hall Trustee, alumna, former dean and faculty member, and Chatham native who twice served as a Writer in Residence. Faculty Participate in Professional Development, Mental Health First Aid Ahead of the 2023-2024 school year, faculty participated in several professional development activities.

On Aug. 21, faculty met with Director of Diversity & Inclusion Deborah Glymph and DEI Task Force member Cierra Fitzgerald to continue the ongoing discussion and strategic work about diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as Cultural Consciousness & Intuition (CCI), new to Chatham Hall this year. The training, designed by Fitzgerald, included information about the dimensions of diversity, code switching, and implicit bias. Faculty were also given the opportunity to participate in learning exercises about culture and bias.

The following day, New York Times bestselling author and industry expert Dr. Lisa Damour virtually met with faculty. Dr. Damour has partnered with the School for several years to further prepare

teachers and administrators for working with girls in an everchanging world. The discussion focused on helping students who feel anxious; growth-giving stress versus unhealthy stress; feelings of helplessness and how to problem solve; managing both internal and external motivation; and wellness practices such as breathing exercises, recovery time, and relationships to technology.

Later in the year, Dean of Academics Martha Griswold will participate in a TABS discussion about the book Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic–And What We Can Do About It by Jennifer Breheny Wallace. She will also be attending a workshop by educator Cindy Blackburn that’s designed to help teachers understand AI and how ChatGPT can be used as an educational resource.

In addition to CPR training, faculty and staff members also had the

opportunity to participate in Mental Health First Aid training.

The training, which included virtual and in-person workshops, is skillsbased and helps people identify, understand, and respond to signs and symptoms of a mental health or substance use challenge.

“We offered the Mental Health First Aid course as a part of the School’s commitment to Living Well at Chatham Hall,” said Dean of Students Josh Doyon. “The training really helped faculty and staff learn how to better evaluate and take steps to better care for every student in a variety of possible situations.”

800 CHATHAM HALL CIRCLE LaDuke Inducted into the VISAA Hall of Fame Cathy “La” LaDuke was posthumously inducted into the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) Hall of Fame on Oct. 16 in recognition of her 20 years as Chatham Hall athletic director and overall commitment to sports.

A ceremony for her and the other three inductees was held in Richmond, Va. Several community members were present, including Trustees Hunt Whitehead P’22 and Adair Hendrickson Ravencraft ‘02, Dr. Taylor Taliaferro ‘06, current Parent Advisory Committee President Kimber Keating P’20, ‘22, 24, and faculty members Corinna Hedge Howell ‘12, Jennifer Hiltwine, and Christine Cutright Knight P’19.

“An accomplished athletic director, coach, colleague, and friend, La was a person of deep faith, and this guided her. She was a leader who understood people, what motivates them, and how to tap into their strengths as a player, student, and mentor. She was a natural connector,” said Knight, who worked with LaDuke in the School’s Office of Advancement & Alumnae Relations. “Later, she became our official Keeper of Traditions and for many she personified Chatham Hall and the values it embraces.”

LaDuke served Chatham Hall for 34 years, including as athletic director from 1996-2015.

She was instrumental in the founding of the Blue Ridge Conference (BRC) where she served in a number of roles, including webmaster, treasurer, and vice president. During her time at Chatham Hall, she coached several sports, including field hockey and lacrosse for which she served many years on their respective VISAA committees.

In 2004, LaDuke was selected by the VIAAA as Athletic Director of the Year for Independent Schools, and was honored posthumously in 2021 with the VIAAA Distinguished Service Award.

As noted on its website, VISAA provides accredited member schools with the resources and competitive environment in support of education-based athletic programs that establish a foundation for excellence founded on integrity, sportsmanship, and leadership.

Payton ‘26 Organizes Art Show for World Mental Health Day In honor of World Mental Health Day, Hannah Payton ‘26 organized the Significant Arts of Mental Health show in the Van Voorhis Lecture Hall on Oct. 9 to help students celebrate their journeys with mental health.

“I wanted to do something for World Mental Health Day because I know how important mental health is for myself, and I’ve been in a lot of environments where others were struggling in different ways,” Payton said.

The art show featured pieces created and submitted by students that illustrate their feelings around mental health. Submitted art ranged in subject matter and medium, and represented a range of experiences and perspectives. Additionally, Payton curated a display of professional art that depicted mental health challenges.

“I decided on the art show because it brought subtle awareness, and people didn’t feel pressured to stop by,” she said.

The event also included an ode to the senses. Tapping into one’s senses is said to be a valuable grounding

technique and a form of self-care. Students and faculty were able to take an item that had a unique feel, use smell boxes, taste baked goods and drinks, listen to music, and view the art displays. By connecting through the five senses, attendees were able to be present in the moment.

“I really liked putting the final details together, especially the five senses stations. I tried to imitate grounding techniques where it takes you out of your mind and into the space around you,” noted Payton. “I think the show will help students think about mental health more.”

Zhang ‘24 Named National Merit Commended Student Xinyue “Stella” Zhang ’24 has been named a Commended Student in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship program.

“I am grateful to be awarded the Letter of Commendation for the National Merit Scholarship,” Zhang said. “Thanks for all the teachers that showed support during the preparation period.”

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.

Commended Students such as Zhang placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2024 competition by taking the

2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success and represent a valuable national resource. Recognizing the contributions of such students is vital to advancement of academic excellence in our nation.

“We are all so proud of Stella, and glad that her hard work has been recognized at the national level,” said Dean of College Counseling Dr. Erin McHugh.

Chatham Hall to Establish Campus Arboretum What do you think of when you think of Chatham Hall? One alumna and current Trustee thinks that the abundance of beautiful and majestic trees on campus are one of the School’s most iconic and important assets. Turns out, she’s not alone.

“Chatham Hall has this marvelous campus, and we have a lot of trees, so it just makes sense that we should take care of them,” Trustee Kate Bulkley ’77 said.

Bulkley has always admired the trees on campus, but she was inspired to create the Chatham Hall Arboretum Task Force after she met Sherley Young ’57 when Young won the Chatham Hall Distinguished Alumna Award in 2022.

“In her acceptance speech, Sherley spoke passionately about many things, including establishing the Washington Square Park arboretum in Philadelphia,” Bulkley said.

She asked Young how difficult it would be for Chatham Hall to have an arboretum of its own. “With typical Sherley verve, she told me all it would take is determination because we certainly have enough beautiful trees on this campus, just look around!”

With that inspiration, Bulkley pulled together several more like-minded alumnae and fellow Trustees to form the task force. In addition to Bulkley and Young, the Task Force includes trustee Jennifer McKay ’84 P’20, whose family created The Crosby Arboretum in Mississippi to honor her grandfather, and Molly Davis ’79, director of The Arboretum, State Botanical Garden of Kentucky.

The next step was to talk to the

School’s faculty, staff, and students to see how the project resonated with them.

“What’s been really great is the enthusiasm we’ve felt from the School about the trees and stewarding the trees,” said Bulkley.

“This really is a joint effort of alumnae, the Board of Trustees, the School, and the girls.”

Chatham Hall is now in the process of establishing a Level 1 accredited arboretum with a dedication planned for the spring to coincide with Earth Day on April 22.

“I’m thrilled to be part of the arboretum project with my Global Entrepreneurship class because I believe it provides us with a unique opportunity to leave a lasting legacy at our School for generations to come,” said year two entrepreneurship student Stephanie Cano Barranco ’24.

The School’s Global Entrepreneurship students are driving the arboretum project, including photographing and creating fact sheets for the 25 trees chosen to meet the species requirement necessary for this level of accreditation. Other campus groups involved in the project include the Nature Club, Sustainability Club, and Art Department, including the Makerspace team which will design and prototype the tree labels.

“I am so excited about being able to work on this project as I believe it shows promise to positively impact our campus and sustainability efforts as a School,” said Sophia Hurst ’25, year one

entrepreneurship student and president of the Sustainability Club.

Director of Entrepreneurship Beth Barksdale has been working closely with the Arboretum Task Force, Wolf Josey Landscape Architects, who are building the tree database, and students to ensure the Chatham Hall Arboretum contributes on multiple levels. For example, the arboretum will feature interpretive and educational stations including mosaic stepping stones, registered bluebird birdhouses created by community members, a pollinator garden, and guided meditations to create a fully immersive experience.

The Chatham Hall Arboretum will be dedicated on April 22, as part of the School’s daylong Earth Day celebration, including campus workshops, performances, a dedication ceremony, and studentguided tours. We hope many will be able to join us on campus to celebrate this exciting project!

Students Travel to Staunton for Production of Hamlet On Oct. 7, 21 Turtles and four faculty members took a trip to Staunton, Va. for the American Shakespeare Center’s (ASC) production of Hamlet at the Blackfriars Playhouse.

emphasis on the humor of the scenes was absolutely brilliant, and it made the play so much more fun to watch as new life was imbued to the characters. I enjoyed every moment!”

The trip was sponsored by the Art Department to correspond with this year’s Fall Play, Bernhardt/Hamlet, which will be staged in November. The group was also introduced to the Staunton Augusta Art Center and its exhibition of contemporary portraits by Andrew Davis called “LAUGHING PICTURE,” and enjoyed spending time in downtown Staunton.

The opportunity to see a live production of Hamlet was serendipitous considering this year’s Fall Play selection. Bernhardt/Hamlet follows Sarah Bernhardt, an actress in the 1890s on a mission to perform Hamlet as the titular role. Upon finding out that the ASC’s production in Staunton would be led by a woman, just like the play-within-a-play in Bernhardt/Hamlet, the actors and director jumped at the opportunity to see it.

“Staunton is a lovely town; I enjoyed listening to the cellist while eating lunch, shopping in the downtown shops, and was entranced by the production. I’d like to do this trip every year,” said Ms. Valerie Doucette, English teacher and trip chaperone.

The production of Hamlet, put on in a replica of a Shakespearean theater, delighted all of the attendees, including several students who are a part of the Fall Play ensemble.

“The costuming, energy, and moments of both humor and heartbreak were stunning,” said Catherine Nichols ’24. “The performance was an inspiration for all of us in fall theatre, and seeing the unique ways that the actors brought Hamlet to life was very exciting. My fellow actors and I were all very moved by the end of the show.”

“It was a truly wonderful experience to be able to see such a unique interpretation of Hamlet. Every detail from the costumes to the performance itself is a reminder of how stories constantly reform themselves to adapt to new times,” said Meaghan Kress ’24. “I thought the gender-bending of the characters and the

“Even though I have read the play, I had never been able to see Hamlet performed live until now. Watching how the cast worked with line delivery, movement, and costuming was phenomenal and gave me inspiration on how to work with the Hamlet scenes for Bernhardt/ Hamlet,” said Sophia Taylor ’24, who is set to play Bernhardt (and therefore Hamlet) when the show is performed on campus on Nov. 3 & 4.

The Chatham Hall actors have taken inspiration from the professional performance, and all attendees enjoyed experiencing the world of both performing and visual arts.

Assam ‘25 Wins Gold in Pleasants Landing Triathlon On Oct. 7, international boarder Zuri Assam ’25 placed first out of female participants ages 1519 during the Pleasants Landing Triathlon at Lake Anna after a twoyear journey in the triathlon world.

have my team, and all my friends are on the team.”

Running since age 12 and swimming since she was a baby, Assam decided to combine her skills into the unique triathlon format when she joined the Jamaica National Triathlon Team.

Since then, she’s competed in approximately 15 triathlons.

In addition to friends, her siblings are also her teammates while they compete in the endurance multisport race which includes running, swimming, and biking.

Since coming to campus in August, Assam has been training through Varsity Cross Country and using a mounted bike on dorm. This fall, she also competed in two local 5Ks where she placed first and second, respectively.

“I just love doing it. There’s something about it, it’s kind of fun,” Assam said. “Back home I

in the Commonwealth Games someday.

“I was happy because it was my first triathlon since the summer, and it was a pretty good time as well,” she said.

Students Explore Creativity During Spring Performing Arts This spring, Chatham Hall actors and dancers explored their creative sides during two productions.

In the Black Box, theatre students presented Hotel Cassiopeia, an experimental play by Charles L. Mee that takes place in the mind of artist Joseph Cornell, played by Catherine Nichols ’24.

Throughout the play, the audience witnesses many short scenes from Cornell’s internal vantage point including his reliving memories, remembering film scenes, and grappling with loss and loneliness. The play relies on audio and visual displays, as well as the supporting actors that bring this troubled story to life. The Spring Play was directed by Mr. Cameron Ayres and supported by assistant director Ginny Hopkins ’23 and Nichols, who made directorial contributions. Additionally, Marland Bustamante ’23, Keri Campbell ’24, and Elizabeth Stafford ’25 organized many of the audio-visual components.

The spring dancers used their medium to tell stories of love and heartbreak. The layout of Van Voorhis Lecture Hall (Dutch) was altered so the performance could take place on the main floor among the audience, giving them the opportunity to be a part of the show while the dancers moved around them. Each audience member had a unique vantage point during each of the six short performances. Spring Dance was led by Ms. Kaykeel Dillard with select pieces choreographed by Sheker Atayeva ’23, Anaiah “Ana” Charway ’26, and V Edwards ’23.

Spring Sports Experience Growth, Success Throughout the Season It was a successful season for Chatham Hall’s lineup of spring sports.

In its second season as a competitive sport at Chatham Hall, the Varsity Golf team had another tremendous season. After numerous regular season wins, the Turtles claimed the inaugural BRAC Girls Golf Championship title with Milan Berry ’23, Ellery Blurton ’24, and Sophie Leak ’23 all recognized with 1st-Team All-BRAC honors and Coach Zach Smith being recognized as Coach of the Year.

Additionally, four golfers competed at the VISAA Girls Golf State Invitational, all finishing in the top 30 in the intermediate division including Leak, who placed 5th.

Varsity Soccer also experienced growth and success throughout the spring, including advancing to the VISAA State Quarter Finals. Three players earned All-BRAC

honors, including Arina Seicas ’24 (1st Team), Sophia Bossard ’25 (2nd Team), and Avery Deigl ’23 (2nd Team).

Seicas was also recognized as 2nd Team All-State.

Also in its second season at Chatham Hall, the Varsity Track & Field team continued to strengthen its program and saw improvements across each event with all team members achieving new personal records. During the BRAC Championship, the 4x100m relay team earned medals and Sophie Becker ’25 placed 2nd in the triple jump and 3rd in both the long jump and 300m hurdles.

Eight student-athletes qualified for the VISAA State Championship in the 4x100m relay, shot put, long jump, triple jump, 100m dash, 100m high hurdles, 300m hurdles, and high jump, respectively.

Way to go, Turtles!

Lin's '24 Art to be Displayed at U.S. Capitol Krystal Lin’s ’24 digital painting “The Whale” has been selected for display at the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. Lin created “The Whale” during the January Term Illustration course, and it was submitted to the Congressional Art Competition by the Art Department chair.

Five high school students are selected from each district in the U.S. Pittsylvania County is part of Virginia’s fifth Congressional District, which includes the majority of Southside Virginia. The judging panel for the competition was composed of Liberty University Arts Department faculty.

According to the Congressional Art Competition webpage, “each spring the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.”

Lin’s work was honored at a district award ceremony and recognized at a national ceremony in Washington, D.C. It will be displayed along with other winning works for one year.

Record Number of Global Scholars Present Research Eight seniors presented at this year’s Global Scholars Symposium, a record number for the program that formed in the 2019-2020 school year.

Diving deep into topics as diverse as Journalism in the Middle East and the Influence of Cultural Perspectives on Shark Conservation in Fiji and Papua New Guinea, the students presented the findings of their 25-page capstone theses.

“Becoming a global citizen begins with a curiosity about the global forces that connect us and a drive to make impactful contributions to this borderless world. Chatham Hall’s Global Scholars recognize and understand the interrelated and interdependent relationship world citizens share with each other and its environment,” said Mr. John Kingery, History Department chair and co-director of the Global Scholars Program with Ms. Christa Anderson.

“The work they put in, from interviewing professionals to international field work, provides them with the necessary tools to engage and appreciate the world we share from a variety of perspectives.

The range of interests and passion our scholars display inspires me greatly, and Ms. Anderson and I are extremely proud of what they have and will accomplish.”

Designed to give students the opportunity to immerse themselves in globally minded pursuits, the Chatham Hall Global Scholars Program is open to students in grades 10-12. To be admitted to the program, students must submit a 500-word essay outlining their interest in becoming a Global Scholar, including personal experiences (or lack thereof) which have sparked their desire to become global citizens.

Once accepted, students must maintain a 3.5 GPA for the entirety

of their program participation; complete four years of study of a world language; complete at least 5.5 credits of courses determined to have a global component; actively participate in an internationallyfocused club for at least two years with one year in a leadership role; participate in community service linked to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals; and complete a 25-page capstone thesis, as well as present it to the public in a symposium in the spring of their senior year.

“I am incredibly proud of the scholars in this year’s program,” said Anderson. “Their remarkable dedication and unwavering commitment to their independent study has truly showcased their ability to tackle complex challenges with determination. They have not only demonstrated their intellectual prowess, but also their passion for learning. This is an exceptional group of students.”

Global Entrepreneurs Design Additions to Chatham Community Seven first-year student entrepreneurs were invited to present at this year’s Global Entrepreneurship Symposium, each with an idea to add value to Chatham Hall, the local Town of Chatham, or a specific community in the U.S. From local small batch honey to a new performing arts and concert venue, a retro diner-themed eatery to a local thrift shop, the students presented their ideas to the School community after determining a need to be fulfilled.

Uniquely designed by Director of Entrepreneurship Beth Barksdale for Chatham Hall, the School’s Global Entrepreneurship program is a two-year program that ensures students have a hands-on learning opportunity to create value in their school, their local community, and the wider world. In each of these experiential locations, first year students identify and validate a viable business idea, develop and present a comprehensive business plan, and determine how to move the idea forward. Having mastered the skills of ideation, planning, and pitching, second year students

actually launch and scale their own businesses, pivoting as needed to achieve product-market fit and longterm sustainability.

Since the entrepreneurship program was launched in 2019, four value added programs have been implemented at Chatham Hall, seven student businesses have been successfully launched, 41 unique proposals have been developed to enhance the town of Chatham, Va., and student entrepreneurs have purchased and branded their own food cart, Bite of the World.

Additionally, the students started the $ Club, also known as the Money, Money, Money Club, consisting of student investors and business leaders that also support studentrun businesses on campus.

Barksdale created the curriculum for the program, teaches the classes, and serves as a personal consultant to students who have launched their own businesses. Her former career as a CEO of a national healthcare company enables her to bring practical experience into the classroom, while also helping students develop the initiative,

confidence, and leadership skills to be successful in the future.

“I absolutely love working with our students to help them discover their true passions, and then working with them to cultivate an idea that could make a positive impact in our world,” she said.

Tracy Tian’ 24 says of the program, “Learning entrepreneurship as a high school student prepares us for future experiences in society, and no matter what major you study or career you choose, the skills we develop such as communications, public speaking and proposal writing will always be beneficial.”

Vicky Gao ’24 loves that she can use her creativity and imagination in the class as a way to combine her interest in music and business. “This program makes me feel like nothing is impossible!”

Eve Dunnagan’s ’23 favorite aspect of the class is “Case Study Fridays” which give students in the program the opportunity to fully explore a company with products available in the market today.

Congratulations, Class of 2023!

Chatham Hall’s Class of 2023 graduated on May 27 with a ceremony on Pruden Lawn.

Earlier in the morning, the graduates, faculty and staff, and family and friends celebrated a Baccalaureate service in St. Mary’s Chapel. Mr. John Kingery, chair of the Department of History and one of this year’s elected Honor Council advisors, delivered the Baccalaureate Address while Ginny Hopkins ‘23 delivered the Student Address.

During the Commencement ceremony, Acting Head of School Dr. Christian J. Proctor delivered remarks to the Class of 2023.

“Look carefully at our senior class. They are all different.

But they all at one time were New Girls, became Old Girls, and soon they will be Chatham Hall alumnae,” he said. “I hope they are bound by the ability to apologize, forgive, and call people into conversations that educate. After one short year, this is how I view Chatham Hall: Esto Perpetua.”

The Graduation ceremony included inducting several new members of the Cum Laude Society for superior academic achievement in an independent secondary school, including graduates Sophie Croker Poole, Madison “V” Edwards, Marisol Helms, Sophie Leak, Anny Lin, Eva Melendrez, Liliana Stinson, and Taylor Xu. Class of 2023 members Bianca Garcia, Marisol Helms, Sophie Leak, Eva Melendrez, Riquel Owusu, Liliana Stinson, Carolyn Whatley, and Taylor Xu were awarded Global Scholar certificates while Nuura Abdilaahi, Carolyn Whatley, Tiffany Wu, and Tina Zhang were recognized with Global Entrepreneurship certificates.

Bianca Garcia ‘23 was recognized as the Honor Council president with the Honor Council Award, while Sarah “Fish” Leineweber ‘23 was recognized with the Purple & Golden Rule Citation for being the graduate who best lived the precepts of the Purple & Golden Rule and educated others

5 QUESTIONS WITH FACULTY DEBORAH GLYMPH WHY TEACH AT CHATHAM HALL? As a member of the faculty for the last eight years, I am both honored and privileged to be able to teach such talented and insightful students.

Equally as important is my ability to be and stay curious.

The ability to stay current and to access numerous resources allows me to hone my skills to reach my “superpower” as I teach and learn from students whose superpowers also rise as they experience the journey of high school at Chatham Hall.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT BEING AN EDUCATOR? Talking to young people.

Learning from young people. I am a mother of two daughters and a grandmother of three beautiful grandchildren, Ivy, Mason and Violet, who inspire me to be the best I can be.

Being around them, as well as my Chatham Hall students, allows me to witness, firsthand, their changing awareness, their insights, and their view of the world they live in. I have taught a range of age groups from kindergarten to college, and I am still learning so much every day. I am such a fortunate educator to have experienced so many lifechanging moments with my students — to be a facilitator of their journey as well as my own. As I have previously mentioned, Chatham Hall, for eight years, has supported my interests and my curiosity, which is so reassuring to an educator.

WHAT HAVE YOU ENJOYED MOST ABOUT WORKING IN DEI/CCI SO FAR? The journey. Working in this realm is deliberate and intentional work which has its ups and downs, ins and outs, but it is always exciting, invigorating and challenging. I know I am giving my best and I am content, but not satisfied.

To quote our colleague, former Rector Rachel Connell, “keep going, keep rising.”

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ITEM IN YOUR CLASSROOM AND WHY? My Harkness table, absolutely!

So many wonderful, difficult, inspirational, challenging, frustrating and amazing conversations have happened at my table. Discoveries, reflections,collaboration, empathy, empowerment, all the glorious things that make up a Chatham Hall school year.

I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to watch students grow right before my eyes.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE CHATHAM HALL TRADITION AND WHY? Christmas-all of it! The caroling, Senior Night In the Well, holiday movies, campuswide decorating, and food, food, and wait for it... food!

Actually, I love everything that starts with Halloween! Two years ago, my grandchildren were at my house to help me pass out the treats. They were so excited, even though we were still wading through the pandemic. I was so gratified to see the Chatham Hall community be so welcoming to my family and it added so much joy to the experience.

chat WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO CHATHAM HALL? A friend told me about the open position here, and I was looking to go back into management.

When I came to campus for my interview and was shown around campus, this place and the facilities really sold it for me.

WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF BEING A MEMBER OF THE MAINTENANCE TEAM? The best thing is being a part of a great team. I feel like we can conquer anything. Also, everyone is so appreciative. People don’t always realize how much we do behind the scenes, but when things get fixed and they see the improvements, they understand what we do and how hard we work.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE CHATHAM HALL COMMUNITY? It’s like one big family. People take care of each other and are very respectful. When you fix something, they’re very appreciative; it’s not just one thank you, it’s a bunch of thank yous. The people are great here.

My supervisors have tremendously helped me in my career too, it’s been a wonderful process.

WHAT’S THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB? The most rewarding part of my job is seeing things get accomplished and actually fixed like they should be, and not just putting a Band-Aid on it. That’s rewarding to me. I also like being in an environment with the next generation. I have two daughters that I raised, so this is not new to me, and it makes my job more interesting.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE EVENT TO WORK OR PREPARE FOR? My favorite event is Graduation.

It’s probably one of the hardest to set up, but to actually see the girls getting ready to start their new adventure in life is rewarding in itself.

Five Turtles Continuing to Women's Colleges Five Turtles have decided to continue on to women’s colleges on the strength of their education at Chatham Hall. They will be attending Smith College, Wellesley College, Barnard College, and Mt. Holyoke College in the fall.

relationship with Columbia University. The focus the school has put on STEM programs and accompanying majors, in particular, was a draw. Continuing on at a women’s institution was an added bonus.

“For me, I feel much more comfortable in a women’s environment,” said Sheker Atayeva ’23, who will be attending Wellesley. “I feel more supported by my peers. I really like how at Wellesley, students have a lot of rights and the ability to impact school policies.

Being able to oppose even your school allows you to really explore new ideas.”

“Having my voice heard is important to me. When I attended a coed high school, very often it was the male students who got to speak. It was a STEM magnet school and oftentimes I would have a lot of male teachers or students who really had the attitude that as a girl I wasn’t as smart. It was so frustrating. Attending a girls’ school has not been any less rigorous, we are all incredibly intelligent people.”

Liliana Stinson ’23 will be attending Mt. Holyoke to study political science, a field that at many schools can feel dominated by male voices.

Dr. Erin McHugh, dean of college counseling, is heartened by the rise in popularity of women’s colleges among Chatham Hall students.

“I’ve liked my experience here, being at a girls’ high school. Specifically, it allows us to have our opinions and share our thoughts and have them really earnestly considered. Especially going into political science, it’s often dominated by male voices. I think it’s nice to have a space where I won’t necessarily have to compete with that aspect. My mentality is, give yourself as many opportunities as you can while you have them. There’s no reason to be limited unnecessarily, no one should have to settle for that. Historically women’s colleges teach people that.”

“Students are here at Chatham Hall, an all-girls institution, for a reason. Often, when they look ahead to college, students feel like they are ready for a change and look for a coed institution. But I love when students are open to continuing their education at a women’s college and looking at each school individually. There are so many great things about women’s colleges — students will get four more years in supportive environments in which they are the focus in the classroom. They won’t be fighting to be heard.

There is plenty of proof that those who go to singlesex institutions are more confident in speaking up, and four more years of that after Chatham Hall will be wonderful.”

Alumna Spotlight: Susanna Hogg ‘15 Since graduating from Chatham Hall and the University of Michigan, Susanna Hogg ’15 has blasted off into the world of aerospace engineering.

“I think space is really cool, and I’m excited to be sending stuff there,” she said.

Hogg studied aerospace engineering in college, quickly finding her footing and completing two summer internships with Northrop Grumman before the start of her senior year. She then started a full-time job with the same organization after graduating in 2019.

Currently, Hogg serves as a propulsion engineer and is continuing work on stage one of the Antares rocket which sends supplies to the International Space Station. Since 2019, she has been a part of approximately 10 rocket launches.

“My absolute favorite part of my job is when I get to go out for launches,” she said. “I work crazy shift hours, but I get to be there for the week leading up to do all the pre-launch operations. That’s doing checks on the lines, integrating the rocket horizontally and then bringing it up to vertical closer to launch. On the actual day of the launch, I’m on the team that loads stage one of the rocket with propellant. It’s a really cool thing to work on.”

Despite developing strengths in reading and writing early on, taking advanced science classes at Chatham Hall helped her discover what she was really interested in and would want to later pursue.

“I think Chatham Hall gave me the confidence to understand that a test score isn’t everything. I really enjoyed science and I realized that’s what I should be going into,” Hogg said before discussing another way her time at Chatham Hall prepared her for college life. “The smaller class size was pretty important. I think having close relationships with your teachers at Chatham was pretty encouraged, and that made me a lot more comfortable going to office hours, not being scared of professors, and asking questions in college.”

Her advice for current students focuses on the importance of getting involved, perseverance, and interpersonal skills.

“Try to figure out what you really enjoy doing, work really hard, and don’t get disheartened by one bad test grade,” she said. “I think Chatham Hall can be really good for developing interpersonal skills because you’re living with your friends and you have to learn how to navigate conflict really well ... Continuing to cultivate interpersonal skills along with working really hard at school can be more valuable than people realize.”

A former student-athlete, lover of Cookie Break, and Gold Team captain, Hogg encourages current students to hold on to their time here while they can and “enjoy it all.”

OUT & ABOUT alumnae news Donor Profile: Sally Saltonstall Willis ‘58 Why did Sally make philanthropic contributions to Chatham Hall?

Chatham Hall meant a great deal to Sally. She formed several friendships during her four years there that lasted throughout her life. She enjoyed the camaraderie and gettogethers on an annual basis with her Chatham Hall classmates. Sally felt she benefited greatly from the Chatham Hall experience, and she wanted to give others who perhaps couldn’t afford to attend the School the same opportunity to enjoy the wonderful experience she did.

Why is it important for other people to support Chatham Hall financially?

Sally felt that it was only with strong alumnae participation that Chatham Hall would grow in strength and endure. She felt that she could provide leadership with that and hoped that she could encourage others to contribute.

What did Sally like most about staying involved with Chatham Hall?

Her friendships! Sally had such wonderful times at annual gettogethers with Chatham Hall friends. She also recognized that

Chatham Hall took a shy girl and fostered her, encouraged her, and developed her into the wonderful person that she turned out to be.

She felt that Chatham Hall played a principal role in that development.

What did being an alumna mean to Sally?

Sally felt the bond she developed with Chatham Hall was so strong that she wanted to continue that for the rest of her life — just like her friendships. The School’s values were all part of her personality: kindness, providing a supportive environment, and caring for one another. She cherished the values that the School instilled in her, and she left Chatham Hall with wonderful memories. It really developed her in a way that other schools could not have.

Sally’s dedication to her family, Chatham Hall friends, and to the School was a source of inspiration.

Her devotion to Chatham Hall was made evident in her anonymous gift matching challenges to encourage the robust endowing of the Class of 1958 Memorial Scholarship Fund, as well as her gift to the Boundless Potential campaign for a new scholarship

in her name. The scholarship will provide financial aid for one or more students who might not otherwise be able to attend Chatham Hall and demonstrate strong character, exemplary citizenship, and deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of School life.

Sally lived fully and, in true Chatham Hall form, she appreciated the journey. She sought joy and lightness in service to others, her family, her community, and her School.

Howard ‘10 Coaches at Special Olympics World Games in Berlin This summer, Jennifer Howard ’10 traveled to Berlin, Germany for the Special Olympics World Games as a coach representing Team Bermuda.

“The moment that stands out the most was walking into the Opening Ceremony where more than 100,000 people were there to support our athletes,” she said. “The amount of pride they had in representing Bermuda and to see them making connections with other athletes from around the world is something I will never forget.”

Over the past year, Howard has

helped coach Team Bermuda in both swimming and equestrian events.

During the World Games, Team Bermuda took home an impressive 11 medals, including two golds, one silver, and eight bronze, as well as numerous other placings.

“Being a part of Team Bermuda in a coaching capacity was a once in a lifetime opportunity,” noted Howard. “The athletes are inspiring, and I have learned so much from them in such a short time. I think a lot of people look at the opportunity as a way to give back to others when in reality I’m the lucky one.”

Howard currently serves as administrator of the K. Margaret Carter Center, a day program facility that helps adults with disabilities, mental health conditions, and traumatic brain injuries increase their independence and learn functional and life skills. Earlier this year, Howard was recognized by the Alumnae Council as the 2023 Leader on the Rise. She was also recently named Big Sister of the Year by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bermuda in 2022.

Guth Leader in Residence Program Celebrates 20 Years

By Susan Johnston Taylor For the past 20 years, the Polly Wheeler Guth '44 Leader in Residence program has brought female luminaries to the Chatham Hall campus to interact with and inspire students.

As a philanthropist and a founding member of the New York Women’s Foundation, Polly Wheeler Guth '44 was Chatham Hall’s first Leader in Residence during the 1993-1994 school year. The program was sustained annually through the Partridge Foundation until Guth made a significant gift in 2008 to endow the program permanently.

During the past two decades, the Guth Leader in Residence program has welcomed primatologist Jane Goodall, activist Gloria Steinem, tennis trailblazer Venus Williams, and Pakistan’s former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, among others, to campus.

Often, the Guth Leader in Residence’s area of impact connects with what students are talking about in class or around campus.

Chief Advancement Officer Christine Knight P’19 added that many of these women share what it’s like to be a working mother or how they’ve excelled in a maledominated industry.

“Often these women are really candid about the path that they've taken and the opportunities and challenges that they've had,” she said. “I think those messages really help girls see a path forward.”

“Because we are a girls’ school, it is really important to expose them to role models. We know that in the world, the funnel narrows for women in various roles, and so we need to equip these girls with the skills and the confidence that they can persist and succeed.”

“We had [basketball coach and former WNBA player] Lisa Leslie last year, and we're doing a health and wellness initiative,” said Dean of Academics Martha Griswold. “She's somebody who cares very much about that, so she talked about that with students.”

In November 2023, Chatham Hall will welcome former Secret Service special agent and TV correspondent Evy Poumpouras. Griswold said her selection process focuses on “strong leaders who have a sense of the fortune that they have attained and now have found a way to give back to society.” She adds that the leaders help show students different ways of defining and

In contrast to programs that bring a leader to campus for a single speech or Q&A, the Guth Leader in Residence program hosts its guest on campus for 24 hours across two class days, during which they meet with smaller groups of students as well as give a keynote address.

Students can sign up to be part of a study group that presents on some aspect of the leader’s life such as their biography or an aspect of their career. Then, they get to share a meal or conversation with the leader in a more intimate setting.

“Because we are a girls’ school, it is really important to expose them to role models,” said Knight. “We know that in the world, the funnel narrows for women in various roles, and so we need to equip these girls with the skills and the confidence that they can persist and succeed.”

The leaders get to know some of these students, and sometimes they’ll reference those students while addressing the larger group.

to her because you have a similar interest,’” Griswold recalled.

Having multiple interactions with the Guth Leader in Residence gives students time to process what they’re learning and generate thoughtful questions.

“The thoughts that these women inspire in them shows an open mindset on the kids’ behalf because they're willing to listen, to take some advice, and mull it over,” Griswold says.

After 24 hours on campus, the leaders feel enriched by connecting with students, and the students come away invigorated.

“Even some of these women whose names you wouldn't have known, you'll hear about them year after year after year from students and alumnae because the message was so powerful,” noted Griswold.

Sophia Taylor '24, who attended presentations by two recent leaders, Tiffany Shlain and Lisa Leslie, agreed.

"I feel like it's good for students to gain perspective from people who have succeeded in multiple ways,” she said. “The Leader in Residence program brings people from all perspectives to campus — Lisa Leslie and Tiffany Shlain are in completely different fields. I think that the program is really beneficial to the students at Chatham Hall, because we're exposed to different types of leaders, and so when we want to make an impact, we understand all of the multi-faceted ways that can look."

Reopening the World

Global Travel Programs Return Post-Pandemic

By Susan Johnston Taylor For many Chatham Hall students, travel—whether it’s a Spring Break trip to Africa or a summer spent with the Student Diplomacy Corps—enriches their academic studies, forges new friendships, and broadens their perspective. What better way to see world history, art, or languages in action? As the world reopens following the COVID-19 pandemic, students are once again exploring the globe.

“Getting outside your comfort zone, whether that be outside of your town, state, or country, the benefits of travel are transformational,” said Dean of Academics Martha Griswold.

“Kids always come back with their eyes wider and just breathless at experiences that they’ve had.”

Spring Break Trips This school year marks the first spring trip since the 2019 excursion to South Africa, which included a meal with Nelson Mandela’s prison guard. Chief Advancement Officer Christine Knight P’19, who chaperoned a similar trip, said, “we’re helping them shape their experiences now that will have a lasting footprint throughout their life.”

Spring Break trips have been on hiatus, but in spring 2024, they will resume as a group of Chatham Hall students and faculty visit Kenya and volunteer at the Sasyeni Primary School.

“For many kids, this is their first international experience,” Griswold said, adding that they try to choose destinations that are a little harder

to visit for a truly unique and memorable experience. Visiting a country with unfamiliar customs and perhaps a new language helps students build their resilience.

Student Diplomacy Corps Over the years, many Chatham Hall students have participated in Student Diplomacy Corps (SDC), a summer study away program. In summer 2023, Eleanor Butterfield ‘25 traveled to Haida Gwaii, an island off the west coast of Canada, to study traditional ecological knowledge and Indigenous cultures.

For her, the highlight of the trip was traveling by Zodiac boat to a floating lodge.

Australian Exchange Conversations about setting up an Australian exchange program started before the pandemic. The exchange was finally able to move forward in summer 2022, when Sophia Hurst ‘25 became the first Chatham Hall student to participate.

“It was important for me to participate in the SDC because I want to travel everywhere and learn everything,” Butterfield said.

“This was the first step in what I want to do with my life and I am so grateful I got the chance to be in this program.”

Hurst spent several weeks at the St. Margaret’s Anglican Girls School in Brisbane, Australia, during winter in their region.

In addition to her Australian exchange, Hurst attended a SDC program in France this past summer, where she learned about French culture and language and discovered an interest in diplomacy and possibly a college major in international relations.

“I learned a lot communicating with people, meeting new people, and the importance of having different connections in different places,” she said. “I understand if others are scared about going, but they shouldn’t let their fear stop them from doing it because we are going to grow and learn most when we are outside of our comfort zones. That’s definitely something that Chatham Hall teaches us.”

Hallam Hurt & iQuest For students who want to explore the world on a more individualized

basis, the Hallam Hurt Travel Award and iQuest programs let students form a research question, submit a proposal, and compete for funding to go explore that question. Knight leads a grant writing workshop to help students craft their proposals.

Through these programs, Chatham Hall students have traveled to Jerusalem to explore what it’s like to live in a city with all three major world religions, Italy to learn about its mental health systems, and Los Angeles to experience raw and vegan food. Students arrange meetings with experts and plan their own itinerary, then present their discoveries with the School community upon their return. Often, this means a formal presentation, but some students get more creative.

“We had two students who went to France, and they made a beautiful video of their dancing,” Griswold said. “It was amazing!”

Support for Travel Programs These experiences can positively impact a student for the rest of her life. That’s why Chatham Hall donors provide funding for students who otherwise wouldn’t be able to participate, whether it’s a full or partial subsidy.

“We have generous donors who have given because they understand the value that travel provides to a person and to the community,” Knight said. “They see the value in what we’re doing and believe in Chatham Hall’s mission for girls.”

CAMPAIGN UPDATES The Boundless Potential campaign is in full swing! Below are the latest updates about each of the campaign priorities.

ATHLETICS, HEALTH, & WELLNESS

We continue to believe in taking a holistic approach so our students can thrive in all of their endeavors while building healthy habits for life. Now we introduce a comprehensive center for teaching, modeling, and inspiring wellness across our campus in every dimension.

Opening in fall 2024, construction is underway for this 33,000 square feet home to our gym with a bouldering wall and running track, a student commons, athletic training and fitness rooms, a multipurpose room for meetings and events, studios for yoga, fitness, and dance as well as a modernized Health Care Center with a conference room, counseling offices, exam rooms, and overnight care rooms.

With adequate program spaces for movement, mindfulness, and education, imagine the ways a girl will be able to leverage her knowledge of women’s health and self-care and unleash peak athletic performance. Imagine her confidence after a yoga workshop that steadies her mind for standardized tests. Imagine families who truly want what’s best for their daughters walking through these doors and realizing they’ve found exactly what they are looking for and more.

The design of the building will utilize environmentally friendly and sustainable principles by incorporating geo-thermal heating and cooling. Light-filled spaces, patios, and porches contribute to individual well-being. Surrounded by courtyards, trees, and lawns, the benefit of green space will continue to be a hallmark of the Chatham Hall experience.

ENDOWMENT & THE CHATHAM HALL FUND

Enhancing the student experience is at the heart of the Boundless Potential campaign. How Chatham Hall delivers on the student experience is what sets it apart from other schools. With financial aid for families with demonstrated need, we are able to make access to a Chatham Hall education possible. Signature programs, such as Writer in Residence, engage students with role models who inspire and motivate achievement. Creation of the Global Entrepreneurship program, robotics, and Makerspace for design thinking and innovation bring student and faculty ideas to life.

Annual support for the Chatham Hall Fund makes an immediate impact on the School each year. Alumnae, parents, and friends enhance the student experience by adding $1 million every year in support for the Fund with more than $7 million in gifts over the course of the campaign. Every donor and every gift makes a difference.

Gifts for emerging priorities including the Riding Pogram, Robin Peake Stuart Collection of modern art, and other initiatives have provided over $3 million in additional support.

Endowments establish permanent support for our signature programs, financial aid scholarships, and faculty development to ensure that these remain part of the Chatham Hall experience going forward. We have added more than $7 million to the endowment to date.

Members of the Esto Perpetua Society plan for Chatham Hall’s future through planned giving in the form of estate plans, trusts, and beneficiary designations of retirement and life insurance plans. To date, the Boundless Potential campaign recognizes nearly $7 million in designations with a goal of 150 members of the Esto Perpetua Society.

1946 Nancy Howland Washburne Though I have seen a few Chathamites since I graduated, I had a Chathamite sister-in-law, Mary Marsh Washburne ’48. For entertainment aside from TV, I do crossword puzzles, play Rummikub, Hand & Foot (a Canasta game) and Bingo. I gave up Bridge some years ago. Though the school has changed greatly since the days of Dr. Lee, it is still in my heart and I remember my classmates well and with affection.

1950 Cynthia Murray Henriques I continue to live in the Ocean View retirement community in Falmouth, ME, I have a nice cottage and share it with my 18-year-old Jack Russell terrier Chipper. He is deaf, confused about where he is with sketchy eyesight, but certainly knows when it’s cocktail peanut time!

I have to be careful not to trip over him, but he’s good company in spite of his advanced age. I enjoyed a small gathering of Chatham alums in Portland in early August and we were delighted to hear about doings at the school. My kids keep in close touch and visit when they can. Have six greatgranddaughters. The two oldest, nine and 11, are taking piano lessons and we play with each other when they visit. Please,

Serving as Class Agent for the Class of 1950, I am providing updates from a few of my classmates.

Ellen MacVeagh Rublee sounded pretty good when we spoke, told me that she had happy years at Chatham, and that she still has their house, I think in Peterborough, NH, which is her escape hatch from the retirement community where she is based. She has some help, as do all of us in our 90s. Her grandson is doing graduate work at Johns Hopkins which she is proud of. We found she knew some of my cousins so we found plenty to talk about. And she remembers my mother, Alice Baldwin Murray, who was on the Board at Chatham for a few years.

Nancy Gwathmey Harris is in Northeast Harbor in Maine for the summer where she has lots of friends. She leaves her retirement community outside Philadelphia as early as she can and stays in Northeast Harbor as late as she can, and is able to fly back and forth.

She sounds wonderful and we both enjoyed our conversation, catching up on things.

Roo Herty Brown is as busy as ever, musically and otherwise! To celebrate her 91st birthday she flew to England to visit her son Tim and family who live in Hereford. She stayed there for a week and was joined by son Charlie, daughter Liz, and their spouses.

While watching a local soccer match between the Hereford Bulls and the Aston Villa Under 20, they sat together and harmonized. I imagine it was quite a musical event!

Betty Barker Frank is still living in her house in Englewood and is really grateful to be able to do so. She has 24/7 help and sounds very cheerful in

There reside other graduates of the school like Christina Sawtelle Teale ‘51 and her sister Audrey Sawtelle Delafield ‘60. Also Ann Rose ‘53 and the indomitable Sally Lawrence Clark ‘40 who has remained bright and beautiful at 101! Janet Sawtelle Houghton ‘54 lives close by. I still talk to Povy LaFarge Bigbee ‘51 and Susan Fair Boyd ‘51.

1954 Caroline Young Moore I traveled by boat from Florida to Sydney, Australia this winter. Now waiting for spring here in Colorado with lots of snow. My family is doing well. One granddaughter graduated from Colorado University this spring, another from Milton Academy.

1955 Carlotta Hellier Parsons I am continuing to love living in Sarasota, Florida at a wonderful Continuing Care Retirement Community, called The Glenridge on Palmer Ranch. I am still loving to travel and rented an apartment in Madeira this spring, where I was visited by my oldest daughter, a granddaughter and her 11 year old son.

Four generations had a fabulous time exploring beautiful Madeira. I’m going to the Greek islands with my other daughter in November. I feel very blessed that I am able to have so many adventures with my family!

1958 Wissie Thompson I so enjoyed our 65th Reunion this spring. It was wonderful to be back at the school and great to be reunited with classmates Ellie Silliman Maroney ‘58, Amanda Mackay Smith ‘58, and Leila McConnell Daw ‘58. It was also fun to see

1965 Mary Fry Edmunds Haywood In March our daughter Mary Lewis married her long time German boyfriend in Copenhagen.

Then in April we welcomed our eighth grandchild, Mary Kate Haywood, daughter of Rob and Katie.

1966 Nancy Hanes White Sara Clay Branch ‘66 and I survived the challenging hike of Humpback Rock together. We enjoyed smelling the flowers (catching our breath) along the way.

Katherine Reynolds Chandler ‘68 and her three granchildren, Alice, Can, and Emma, from the UK had lunch at Grotto Pizza in Lewes, DE with Esta Baker ‘68.

1967 Anne Bryant Having retired from the National School Boards Association in 2012, I have continued learning through several notfor-profit organizations.

Currently I’m a trustee for the American Council of the Education Development Center based in Waltham, MA. I have also become active with an organization called the Posse Foundation, which identifies students with extraordinary talents, and leadership potential for college scholarships.

1969 Robin Peake Stuart Sandy and I traveled to the Pantanal in Brazil with Charlotte Caldwell ’70 and her husband Jeffrey Schutz in August 2023.

In eight days we saw jaguars, giant otters, giant anteaters, capybara and a million birds. It was truly a naturalist’s dream. GO PURPLES!!

1970 Elizabeth Hasert It was a summer of weddings! My youngest daughter, Marella, was married last month.

Eldest son, Rob, formerly a confirmed bachelor, is getting married in August.

I think I’ll enjoy being mother-of-the-groom more than mother-of-thebride! Rob’s wedding will be small and intimate and they’re planning to have a “wedding weekend” so both families can spend time visiting. Great idea!

fiance race dirt bikes all over the country in their spare time. Rob was hit by a truck while dirt biking five days before Marella’s wedding and broke his leg! Fortunately he is in excellent shape and wears good protective gear so the break was minor — if a broken leg can be minor!

Never a dull moment! I am still getting settled in my new house and yard in Washington. I’m on a small private lake and enjoy the waterfowl antics immensely. Geese and ducks like to prank each other! We also have diving birds like mergansers and grebes and cormorants. I was stressing a bit trying to find a boat light enough

I could manage to get out in the water — son Chris said “Mom, just get an inflatable!” Duh-oh! Lol! My kids are smarter than me these days!

Cynthia Halsey Mernick It is with great sadness that I relay the passing of my mother, Martha L. T. Blankarn ’47, on Sunday April 30, 2023 in Bluffton, SC, where she lived with her husband Sandy to the age of 94.

She participated in varsity sports at Chatham but her love was horseback riding and she won awards for her abilities. Her family is heartbroken but she is with God now and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her kind ways.

1971 Margaret Malloy Sanders I had a great visit with Irene Siragusa Phelps ‘71 while in Florida. I have also kept up with Nona Upshaw ‘71 and Edith Willliams ‘72.

Anne Bowman Gowing The last 18 months have been a journey. I retired after 22 years working in a veterinary clinic in June of 2021, we lost our 18-yearold Jack Russell Terrier Kitt in September, then followed multiple trips to Connecticut to visit my mother (Class of 1946).

Such good times and

many memories with her and my siblings. I was with my mother when she died in March of 2022. It was sad but such a blessing to be by her side. My husband officially retired in June of 2022 and we’ve been enjoying all this time together. Our son Ben lives in downtown Seattle and has a cat Oliver who is our grandcat. And we welcomed the newest addition to the family — Reggie — a 15-week-old Norfolk Terrier who has brought much joy and laughter into our lives.

Hope all in the class of 1972 are doing well. I was sad to have missed our 50th Reunion but was happy to order photos of our class — you all look great!

Sarah Morris This spring I was delighted to visit Dolly Barrett ‘72 in Florence, Italy. It was a wonderful reunion for us as we both attended Sarah Lawrence College as well as Chatham Hall together. Later that month, I welcomed classmates Sallie Wise Chaballier ‘72 and Marion (Dolly) Harris ‘72 in Athens, Greece.

We had fun visiting local sights and catching up on news since our 50th reunion last year. In September, back in the U.S. at our family home in North Carolina, I look forward to visiting Beth Unger ’73 (AKA Babe Kirk, my New Girl) and her family in Roaring Gap. I enjoyed a day in New Orleans with her sister, Catherine Kirk Fogarty ‘70 in January. Once I retire from teaching next year (yay!) I hope to travel more and see more friends from Chatham!

1973 Virginia Cates Bowie Our class, the largest to ever graduate from Chatham Hall, had so much fun — we are planning a re-do May 3-5, 2024. Ann MacTaggart ‘73 came from the Bahamas, Mary Newcomb ‘73 from California, and Cynthia Coe Devine ‘73 (who married a cowboy) came from California too!!! I found out I am related to Lucia Holliday Buie ‘73 through marriage as the Bowies came from a neighboring isle in Scotland!!!

AND going to Chapel Sunday morning got me thinking — where is Ken Whittington — our choir and music director???

He is a Catholic priest in

the mountains of North Carolina!!!! I called the church and he happened to answer. We need to get him on a Zoom to tell his story!!! We discussed the possibility of expanding our next Class of ‘73 reunion weekend to Tucson to see Isabelle Selby ‘73 and maybe to the Bahamas to see Ann!

1975 Julia Morris Kashkashian Robin Symonette ‘75, Joan Stone ‘75 and I met in Geneva for 10 days of walking and eating a path across the higher elevations of Switzerland and France. Kathy Sagemeister-Fox ‘75 made the long journey by train from her home in Austria to spend a couple days with us. Proving once again that every day is a blessing and nurturing relationships is a vital element to life!

1977 Frazier Millner Armstrong What a happy turn of events! My step-grandgirls attended Chatham Hall Summer Camp this year, all the way from Mill Valley, California! They had a wonderful experience! It was so good to be back on campus for the drop-off and pick-up. Camp staff were welcoming, efficient and really made the girls’ time there special.

Jane Wilson I visited with Maggie Taylor ’79 and her husband at a book signing for Maggie hosted by Weston Gallery in Carmel-by-the-Sea on September 3. Chatham classmates were vacationing. Jane lives in Carmel-by-the-Sea with frequent trips back East to visit her one-year old granddaughter. My sister, Leigh Wilson ‘75, is nearing retirement after many years as a professor of creative writing. Her sport of choice these days is golf.

1978 Hunter Estes Barrat The highlight of my summer was a July weekend visit from Tish Berlin ‘78 and Grace Houghton ‘78 at my home near Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. We tarried for hours on the screenedin porch overlooking the

Shenandoah River, talking, laughing, eating, drinking and did I say laughing?

Yes, until tears streamed down our faces and our stomachs hurt! We spent a perfect summer afternoon kayaking down the Shenandoah and took a few strolls around the neighborhood, all the while catching up on times past and present, with the Chatham Hall yearbook within reach to help us remember names and faces because in our minds, no years have passed, and we are all still in our teens. Back in the real world, I’m still working remotely as a technical writer/ editor and doing some project management for

a cybersecurity company, CISO Global. Tish is living in California with her wife, Frances, where both work as freelance recorder players and teachers.

Grace and her husband, Jack, live in South Portland, ME, where she’s the guidance clerk at the local middle school.

1999 Morgan Brawley Hi Turtles! This spring I graduated from LenoirRhyne University with a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

I am finding my niche in mental performance for equestrians. When I am not counseling I can be found at the barn or playing agility with my dogs and with my daughter and future Turtle, Lillian. Go Gold!

2003 Whitney Jones Allen The Class of 2003 was a vocal but small contingent for our 20th Reunion year!

Many classmates sent their regrets to us in advance and we had fun texting photos and keeping them informed during and after Reunion weekend with nice catch-up visits and social media posts. A few of us in attendance mused about the possibility of our daughters maybe being classmates together someday... and proudly discussed the exceptional careers of our classmates.

IN MEMORIAM Barbara Mallory “Bunny” Hathaway ’39, a World War II veteran and philanthropist whose home and meticulously maintained gardens were nationally recognized, died of heart failure on May 12, 2023 at her Owings Mills residence.

Pauline Harrison Winans Finn ‘43, lifelong resident of Bedford, NY, died on May 7, 2023 surrounded by her four children. Pauline is the aunt of Muffy Dent Stuart ‘68 and Pauline Dent Ketchum ‘70.

Marion Evelyn Jones Kingsford ‘45 passed away on May 16, 2023 in Peterborough, NH, at the age of 95.

A constant and fluent source of energy, ideas, passions, and perhaps most important, deep love and empathy, Eleanor Forbes Owens Earle ‘46, died on March 13, 2023. She is survived by her five children, including Amanda Ciccarelli ‘79.

Martha Blankarn Halsey ‘47 of Bluffton, SC, and a long-time resident of Locust and Rumson, passed away peacefully April 30, 2023 at the age of 94.

She was born Feb. 8, 1929, and is survived by her daughter Cynthia Halsey Mernick ‘70.

Liliane Rufenacht Selby ‘50 passed away on Jan. 26, 2023. She is survived by her daughters, Lydia Selby Eitel ‘71 and Isabelle Selby ‘73.

Jean Bahr Waltrip ‘52 passed away March 4, 2023, following a brief hospitalization.

Elizabeth Jefferys Dees ‘54 died peacefully on April 30, 2023 at the age of 87 after a short illness, with her two children by her side.

Carol McGown Blaine ‘59 left us peacefully on March 25, 2023 after a day filled with friends who dropped by to tell her how she had influenced their lives and their own spirituality.

Paula Wright Lipman ‘64, age 77, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2023 at Chesapeake Regional Hospital.

Having spent her last hours with her loving family, Muffin Dalton Grant ‘66 stepped into her heavenly home on May 31, 2023, after a battle with metastatic breast cancer.

Reunion Class Gifts to Benefit the Athletics, Health, & Wellness Center In celebration of their milestone reunions, both the 50th Reunion Class of 1973 and 60th Reunion Class of 1963 raised funds in support of the Boundless Potential campaign. Each class set a fundraising goal of $100,000 to name an alcove in the new athletics, health, and wellness center.
