Ingredients 1 lb. lean ground beef 1 1 ounce packet taco seasoning mix 1 ½ cups refried beans or 1 ½ cups drained and rinsed black beans ¾ cup corn kernels 3 cups cooked rice 6 large 10-inch flour tortillas 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese Instructions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray 9 x 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray and set aside. Cook b e e f with taco seasoning m i x , according to seasoning package instructions.
To prepare 1 burrito: spread ¼ cup beans down center of tortillas; top with ½ cup rice, beef, 2 tablespoons corn, and ¼ cup cheese. Fold in opposite sides of each tortilla, then roll up, burrito style. Place, seam-sides down, in prepared dish. Repeat with remaining ingredients to prepare 6 total burritos. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes (until heated through). If you are baking the burritos from the refrigerator w h i l e they’re still cold, it will take about 3 0 - 3 5 minutes for them to heat through.

Of New Years and Wishes...
by Carolyn Parks-Mintz, Author, Journalist & Freelance Writer The beginning of any year often includes resolutions, vows to improve on something, to change something, to do better. Given that 2020 marks the start of a new decade, it perhaps feels even more significant. The last 20’s were described as ‘roaring’ in light of post-war prosperity, positive cultural change, booming business and the advent of technology. With the exception of economic advances and stability, I tend to hope this century’s 20’s are somewhat more muted. And along with that, any resolution-ary bent I may have is in the form of wishes rather than steadfast resolves—whether they be international, national, regional, local or personal. I wish for: • A conclusion to the unsavoury situation and its repercussions between Canada and China involving Huawei executive Meng Wanshou and her extradition demanded by the USA through the current Canadian-American extradition agreement • Release of the two Canadians incarcerated in China, seemingly in retaliation to the above • Conclusion to ongoing, seemingly never-ending, Brexit negotiations between the United Kingdom and the European Union—for better or for worse • Global acknowledgement of and solid action designed to slow and mitigate climate change—I know, I know, a pie in the sky wish • Development by worldwide corporations of a conscience that goes beyond the bottom line, more than profit above all else, and one that considers the future of the globe and its peoples—more pie in the sky, I
fear • An end to the tenure of narrow-minded, egocentric, unpredictable, bullies of limited intelligence pretending to be ‘leaders’ of various countries • A national Pharmacare plan for Canada—people should not have to choose between necessary medication and their next meal. • Increased equity in pay and benefit practices and adequate income support when people are between jobs or too old or too young to work • Further concrete steps toward eradicating the unfair and harmful impacts of colonization on Canada’s Indigenous Peoples • Affordable and consistently good child care nationally • An end to real estate speculation and a solid start to providing affordable housing nationally • Fairness in a tax system under which everyone pays as they can and should, for the amenities and services we enjoy; tax evasion offshore and elsewhere stops, and the top 1% pay their share. • Effective gun control that becomes a fact of life within Canada • The end of gossip, harassment, intimidation, bullying and victimization on social media (so cowardly) and in person • Appreciation that by an accident of birth or an immigration choice, we live in the best country in the world • Acknowledgement that we are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers, and that life is too short to be mean-spirited or selfish • Recognition that what goes around comes around. Reap as you sow is a fact. And I especially wish the very best of life’s good things for you and yours in 2020 and beyond!

JUST SAYIN’ A Column by The Old Cowpoke
It’s OK to pat your own back… When I arrived in this neck-of-thewoods a couple of months ago, like all newcomers, I began the process of finding out who’s-who, what’s-what and where you could get stuff. It was not only a pleasurable task but in the process I uncovered a greater number-than-usual folks who went that extra mile to meet, greet, seat, and eat with me. Although I didn’t record names nor make notes a number of memorable moments are mine to enjoy. After moseying main street, probably the shortest main drag thoroughfare in my recollection, I stopped at the sole Chinese restaurant on the strip and while the only lunch customer at that time, was treated by the proprietor like his long-lost cousin. On that dull and crappy day he delivered up hot green tea and a full-on menu within just seconds of arrival. I was thinking that already the service level at this little place was grander than most so checked that part off my list. Wanting to try a sampling of everything, to test the kitchen and to see just how far the place would go at the quieter time slot, I ordered up one of those selections that Chinese restaurants seem famous for: a plate of almost everything. Was also figuring on ample time for speedreading the local papers (like this one for example) so getting to know my new neighborhood. Lunch arrived ahead of my schedule and was everything hoped for and didn’t leave me with anything to do ‘cept let my belt out a notch or two. Next destination was that unusually-
named grocery store tucked into a mysterious little plaza… Safety Mart. Everything within eyesight knocked my socks off: with little shops within the bigger one the layout was as welcoming as most of the better grocery chains I’ve shopped and created a feeling that I was visiting a private little village. And never have I seen a couple of his/her washrooms with leather armchairs in its foyer, a usedbook shelf at the entrance, and just along from a the flat-screen equipped coffee shop. It was the bakeshop area that started the customer-service ramp-up big time. Not able to get my hands on a few Frenchstyle baguettes I inquired at the counter if more were coming, was informed that although the shelf was just made bare, she would be pleased to bake me a couple while I shopped the aisles. “Remember, crusty on the outside, soft on the inside, well-wrapped for a long ride to the ranch” I said. “And leave one end open so I can tear off hunks of fresh-baked warm bread on the drive.” Store layout very mosey-able, housekeeping clean-as-a-whistle etc. etc., yadda-yadda. Didn’t pass one staffer who didn’t meet-n-greet and offer up searching help for stuff, one guiding a walk past half the aisles to reach for a chutney. Then back for the baguettes at the bakery (with that experience reminiscent of me stacking loaves under a bungee cord on the back carrier of my Lambretta in France). And then came checkout time… having searched out what I thought was the best Shuswap paper-towel bargain I was a bit
surprised when the cashier chimed in with, “Did you know we actually have a better deal than this? Although you have to buy a few more rolls, the price per roll makes it well worth it”. She put everything on hold and off she went to scoop some up. The whole Safety Mart experience truly exceptional! No wonder they won the country’s top grocery store in their category. Well deserved… just sayin’ . And what about that call from ICBC’s clerk at the Credit Union… “… sorry to trouble you but the other day when we were closing out we noticed you overpaid your insurance by $50.00. Just drop by, we have it in an envelope.” And what about my new pharmacists… “We’ll call your original pharmacist and sort out your meds and have everything ready when you’re back from shopping.” And what about that amazing cadre of Wound-Care nurses who make sure I’m well-equipped and well-advised for home-care should I get drifted-in, or Hydro-less and call to see why I’ve missed an appointment and if I might need anything. And what about that gas station just east of Chase up on the hill? In this day and age, what’s with the owner trotting to my truck… AND serving gas just like the good-ol’ days. “No, I don’t charge extra… I enjoy meeting my customers and thanks for stopping by!” And so if you know any of those folks I’ve been referring to in this little ramble, give ‘em a pat on the back for me. If you can’t I hope they see my comments and do it themselves… just sayin’ !

CHHC 2020 RESOLUTION SUGGESTIONS It’s the first days of the New Year and hence the time when many wishful people put together some resolutions, in a concerted effort to improve themselves, as well as others. With that in mind, the author sat down and scratched his bald head bright red with thoughts on how to improve things for you and our Chase HEAT Hockey Club. 1. If you haven’t been to a home game this season you should make the effort to attend one per month. At this point that means a minimum of 3 games this 2019-20 season. Adults are $10, Seniors $8, Students $6 and 6 and under free. 2. Meet your new neighbours. If you haven’t met them yet, it’s because they are at the game. The arena is a great place to meet your new neighbours. 3. What to do with the spare bedrooms. Your kids need a big brother, and if they have grown up and left, then fill that void in your life with a player or two and join a very special group of billet home parents. 4. What do your friends do on weekend nights. They are at a hockey game and are wanting to meet up with you at the arena. So just a few shared thoughts on a fresh start to the new year. We will provide some useful information at the end, after we cover the two games contested in 2020
submitted by Scott Koch to date. Friday night the 3rd of January the HEAT travelled to the Revelstoke Forum to play the GRIZZLIES. Five minor penalties in the 1st period and zero scoring. In the 2nd the hosts opened scoring, one lone minor infraction called. In the 3rd one more minor infraction and a battle till the final 5 seconds. Revelstoke scored an empty net goal, and the top team in the Division won a squeaker, 2-0. V i n c e Benedetto shone throughout stopping 46 of 47 shots and was named the Chase Star. Saturday night the 4th the HEAT hosted the Summerland STEAM at the Art Holding Memorial Arena. In the 1st stanza no scoring, nor any penalties. In the 2nd the STEAM popped in goal one, alongside taking 3 of 4 minor infractions. In the 3rd there were 8 minors and 3 misconducts with Summerland scoring three and Chase getting a single. New kid on the block Cameron McKenzie getting his first as a HEAT assisted by Rhys Lepine and Danton L’Heureux.

Needless to mention, he received the Home Star, even though he didn’t score! Next Friday the 10th Resolution 1 can be kicked off, as the 100 Mile House WRANGLERS visit Chase at 7:00 pm. Resolution 2 will require some elbow rubbing and bumping into strangers that may become your future best friends. Friends you know and meet at the game don’t require elbowing and bumping into as per #2, tall tales and bafflegab are your best weapons for Resolution 4.
