The Editor’s Spot: by Kelsey Snelgrove Home Again, Home Again Jiggity Jig I wrote last week about how glad I was to be home, but this weekend found myself travelling to Alberta again. This time to Calgary to spend time with Paul’s side of the family, including a fresh, new little smushy nephew named Leo. After getting last week’s paper delivered we got frantically got ourselves packed and ready to go Thursday night.

We had a jam packed long weekend of activities with family and friends including the super fun Telus Spark Science Centre as well as Studio Bell, which is five floors of exhibits that tell the story of music in Canada.

Before moving to Chase back in 2010, Paul and I lived in Calgary, so we both feel levels of nostalgia for the city. So we had Colouring Queenies! a great time just walking around downtown looking at what has changed and feeling the vibe the big city. Luckily Pia, loved that part just as much. At her request we also rode the C-Train back and forth in the free fair zone downtown for a couple hours. We looked at statues and Christmas lights downtown and Pia declared we were part of a parade. She is a night owl and we were on a weird travel schedule too... it was a funny juxtaposition watching

people jostle to get into some apparently hot club while walking past with our 4 year old.

A highlight of the trip might have been connecting with a friend who is an artist.

He recently created a colouring book that showcases a dachshund named Queenie in many different roles. We ordered a one a few weeks ago and as soon as it came through the mail we were all captivated with colouring Queenie as doctor, a joker, a knight, and so on. We came across our friend at the coffee shop (he is always there, he says he can’t work at home because his cats are too distracting) and he was in the midst of drawing and colouring MORE Queenies.

For Pia to see the artist behind the work, and the creation in progress was a really magical art moment. Hard to explain but delightful to experience.

With all that said, now I am really, REALLY glad to be home now with no foreseeable trips on the horizon. We’ll just stay home, make our giant snowmen and colour our Queenies.

A New Year—a New Slate

2018 has arrived. And as we contemplate the beginning of a new year, it would seem appropriate to reflect on the one just past—nationally and individually.

On an international level, Canada has acquired new stature and status through diplomacy, rational decision-making, and standing firm on our foundation of equality, and justice. Keeping the lines of communication open with countries that are difficult to deal with or who have poor human rights records is a progressive move, given that the world has indeed become a global village.

The inclusion of environmental issues and indigenous rights in North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) negotiations is forward thinking. A firm defense of Canadian interests and fairness in the lumber, agriculture and automotive industries is imperative, as is maintaining interaction and consultation with the USA and Mexico. Dispute resolution mechanisms and the USA’s proposed five year NAFTA expiration date will be contentious issues, but I am confident that Canadian negotiators will protect our country and its competiveness within North America.

Seeking additional adjudication and alternate markets for Canada’s lumber and aircraft in light of exorbitant USA duties and tariffs seems a good plan. And in fact, the demand for our softwood lumber south of the 49th, “Canada’s basement” as per comedian Mark Critch, has moderately increased regardless of its extra cost to American contractors and ultimately to the US consumer.

Nationally, much has been achieved or is in process. The Supreme Court’s ruling that mandatory minimum sentencing is unconstitutional is a step toward reforming our country’s antiquated incarceration system Except in the most heinous acts of violence, which deserve life sentences (or psychiatric confinement), jailing simply produces better criminals.

Canada remains far behind other

countries in dealing with those who commit unlawful acts.

Progressive action toward restorative justice and rehabilitation is what is needed.

Administrative segregation (solitary confinement) is being limited and is also under examination with regard to the psychological damage it causes.

Ontario’s judicial system has declared isolation unconstitutional and is moving toward restricting its use and duration.

Our country needs secure hospitals where mentally ill offenders can be confined, to protect themselves and others from harm. Closing so many of these years ago was a short-sighted mistake. Prisons are not appropriate nor effective substitutes.

Re-vamping of veterans benefits, the Canada Revenue Agency’s tightening of rules and pursuit of off-shore tax cheats, funds to improve water supplies and education in Indigenous communities, support for coastal habitat restoration, new lifeboat stations, bolstering of the federal Fisheries Department and Canadian Coast Guard, the Indigenous Community Response Training project, the Coastal Nations Search & Rescue course, Canada’s comprehensive immigration policy and the federal action on climate change are just a few of the positive initiatives of 2017.

Provincially, the cash for access governmental scenario seems to be attenuated, as is the too tight relationship between government and big business and unions. New funding for wildfire infrastructure, prevention, and habitat renewal are all steps in the right direction to hopefully mitigate the “B.C. Burning” scenario in the future. Restoration of classroom size and composition to 2002 levels and new classrooms to address overcrowding will do much to improve education in the province. And the increase in social and disability assistance is a constructive change.

Yet despite all the positive action on numerous fronts, there are issues that continue to require attention, such as electoral reform, the ICBC deficit and false claims, prying marijuana out of the hands of organized crime, as well as the untenable, ongoing and complex First Nations situation.

And on an individual level what should we assess? How did 2017 shake down?

What did we do well and what could we do better? Does 2018 present the opportunity for resolution or revolution?

Sometimes the price of staying the course is simply too high. And frequently the prospect of comprehensive change is

daunting. But often, in order to move forward, it’s important to look back— whether as a country, as a province or as a person. Learning from mistakes is their purpose, and making improvements is strengthening in the long run.

As a definition of success states: “To leave this world a better place, whether through a beautiful garden, a redeemed social condition, a job well done, a loving friendship, or a healthy child, this is to have succeeded.”

To that, this scribbler would add “Do no harm.”

We had our Christmas break from leagues are we are officially into the swing of things once again!

This past weekend was a very exciting one for us here at the lanes! On Saturday, we had our Annual Interior Championship Tryouts!

24 men and women from Chase, will be representing Village Lanes at this years Championships!

Congratulations to the Men’s A Team: Matthew Griffin, Bill Pacholok, Kelly Collins, Darcy Munday, Derek Vigue, and Elmer Dodds! Travelling with them representing the Ladies A Team are: Shelley Munday, Cathy Hosier, Ali Maki, Sam Steil, Rita Carlson, and Wanda Pickell! These twelve competitors will be bowling among the elite bowlers across British Columbia in Kelowna on March 16th and 17th. The B Interior Qualifiers will be heading to Princeton in two weeks time! Congratulations to the Mens B Team of Guy

Alden, Heinz Torbohm, Dan Johnson, Fred Torbohm, Rae Semple and Rod Thiessen. The Ladies B Team consists of Janet Alden, Terry Vandevosse, Sharron Mindel, Susan Waters, Sandra Coates, and Your’s Truly! Congratulations to all who tried out on Saturday, here’s to hoping Chase can bring home the gold!

On Sunday we held the Hawaiian Pick-A-Partner Zone Finals to see which two teams from Village Lanes would be heading to the Provincial Championships bowling to win a trip to Hawaii! At the end of the day, Ali Maki and Dan Stevens placed second, while Jeremy Merrill and April Natrall clinched the first place spot! Good luck to these four bowlers, and feel free to take Kelly and I to Hawaii with you when you win!

Vegetarian Black Bean Enchilada Casserole 24-28 corn tortillas onto the tortillas, fully coating them.

3 1/2 cups red enchilada sauce Sprinkle half the beans, half the corn, 1 tablespoon Jalapeño sauce and half the of the bell pepper on top of the 1 red bell pepper, diced sauced tortillas and top with a third of the 1 green bell pepper diced cheese blend.

1 1/2 cups yellow corn kernels, cooked Repeat the layering process starting 2 15 oz can black beans, rinsed and drained again with the tortillas, then add sauce, then 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese and the rest of the beans, bell pepper, corn, and monterey jack cheese blend another third of the cheese.

Fresh cilantro, diced for garnish Top this second layer with another 8 Green onion, thinly sliced for garnish tortillas. Coat with the remaining sauce and sprinkle the rest of the cheese on top.

KIJHL PROSPECTS SHOWCASE A SUCCESS

The weekend of January 12th to 14th was action packed with a KIJHL Prospects Game and Banquet as well as the Leagues semi-annual Executive meeting.

The Prospects Game is a showcase of the best 16-18 year old players from the Kootenay and Okanagan Conferences meeting to flash their talent and skills. Scouts from the NHL, WHL, BCHL and Colleges were in attendance to view potential prospective additions to their rosters.

They weren’t disappointed as the fast and high calibre of play thrilled the packed stands at the Rutland Arena in Kelowna.

HEAT Director of Hockey Operations Brad Fox coordinated the event for the second year in a row. Fox was the keynote speaker at the Showcase Banquet and those in attendance provided rave reviews on his “Underdog” theme. Fox the never quit believer, provided underdog stories from his years of experience.

That included undrafted players that now represent Canada at the Olympics to 19 year old rookies at the Junior B level that go on to receive scholarships and go into law, all because they didn’t believe in giving up.

The KIJHL is considered a top development League in Canada and the goal is to maintain that reputation and improve on it. In other news, the HEAT clashed in Chase with the North Okanagan KNIGHTS from Armstrong on Friday Night the 12th. The local’s lack lustre effort resulted in a 4-1 loss in front of 285 fans. Based on sales in the “Wobbly Pop Emporium” fans attempted to drown their angst and sorrow during the evenings F rated performance.

Those fans will enjoy a weekend off as the HEAT head to the South Okanagan to clash with Osoyoos and Summerland.

Next home game at AHMA is Friday the 26th versus 100 Mile House WRANGLERS, where ten gallons of head gear will be in fashion. Saddle up and ride down to the barn for the night, parking is free.
