Town Hall Meeting to Address Crime

T

Submitted by Joni Heinrich, Village of Chase

here is a Town Hall Meeting being held April 22, 2016 to discuss crime reduction strategies. Village of Chase Mayor and Council, in partnership with the local RCMP detachment and RCMP crime experts will be on hand Friday, April 22, 2016 starting at 7 p.m. in the upstairs room of the Chase and District Curling Rink to talk about recent criminal activity in Chase and how the community can work with the RCMP to make our community less attractive to criminals. Various individual property owners and other residents have been experiencing theft from their vehicles, sheds and outer areas of their homes over the past couple of months. Some of the crimes have been ‘crimes of opportunity’, that is, unlocked vehicles, storage sheds and the like have been targeted. Items

such as garden equipment and even loose change have been reported stolen. Other thefts have been more serious, and have included break-in type activity. Mayor and Council of the Village do take these concerns seriously, as do the local RCMP. The meeting being held is intended to help the community members understand why these crimes are occurring, and what we can do as individual residents and neighbours to make our community more difficult for thieves to obtain money and items they can sell for money. Together, with more information and knowledge, we can all work together to keep thieves out of our community. Please join us Friday, April 22, 2016 at 7 p.m. at the Chase and District Curling Rink (upstairs) for an informative and educational meeting.

Ever wonderered ‘what does alligator taste like’? Shaun Taylor and Tara Barker are offering you the chance to try real ‘gator, and other unique items meals from their Southern themed food truck, Hush Puppy Po’Boys The couple, who live in Chase started Hush Puppy after they took a trip to Tennessee and Mississippi and fell in love with the food and the vibe of the South. RIGHT: They also have “Food was maple ice cream complete cooked slowly, with bacon with love, and simple ingredients. Nothing was fancy about it- but the flavours were out of this world! We kept travelling and exploring and every time we returned home we’d try to replicate the food we had tasted,” said Barker. The food-loving couple moved from Chase to Charlottetown, PEI in 2013 and started up Hush Puppy there, but instantly felt homesick for BC. “However, we were so homesick for BC, and knew after a few months that we wanted to return home to Chase. Luckily we kept our house here, and were able to come back as soon as our second season had ended. We are so grateful to be back home,” explained Taylor. The truck’s menu consists of a few very traditional menu items like BBQ Shrimp and the Roast Beef Debris, but they have added on our own spin for items like the Lo’ Country Po’Boy – based on a lowcountry boil popular in Georgia and

South Carolina. “We added a Fried Gator Po’boy to our menu because there’s nothing more southern than real gator! It’s a fun draw to our food truck- we always tell people to ‘Eat it before it eats you!’” said Barker. One of their most popular items they serve is fried chicken in a bacon waffle cone. That’s a homemade waffle cone with pieces of bacon infused in it, filled with coleslaw, fried chicken and topped with maple syrup, hot sauce and their own “comeback sauce”. The pair have staked out a spot in Salmon Arm for the summer and they couldn’t be happier with how it’s going so far. They have been very well received so far and said they have been so busy they probably will need to hire an employee. “Chase and the Shuswap are such a spot of sunshine for us, we are so proud to be doing business here, feeding our neighbors and becoming part of such a close-knit and caring community,” said Barker. You can find Hush Puppy at 1160 Trans Canada Highway in Salmon Arm, across from the old Kal-Tire, Wednesday Sunday from noon - 6 or 7 pm. They are planning on staying open until Halloween. You can find Hush Puppy online at www. facebook.com/hushpuppyfoodtruck/ “We’re definitely here to stay and we hope to feed every single last one of you!”

Feedback wantedby Kelsey on Snelgrove beautification project The Village of Chase has a plan to tidy up the Hysop Road Right of Way, and they want your feedback. The plot on Hysop Road is currently designated as a public right of way, so public access is required by Legislation. “[The plot] was obtained as part of a dedication of land that was required by a subdivision of local area lands that took place quite a few years ago,” said Tammy Pretty, Deputy Corporate Officer for the Village of Chase. Last year Council decided to undertake making the area more welcoming and appealing, passing a resolution in September of 2015 to have public works draft a plan. Once the draft was ready they agreed to obtain public consultation before Council approved the plan. The Village of Chase Council wanted to tidy up this area for tourist use as well as local residents.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR EXTENDED VERSION

LETTER TO INFORM VILLAGE RESIDENTS Re: A Community Embarrassment (and health issue) The residents of Sun Valley and neighborhood have been suffering various degrees of dust and dirt contamination for more than five years. The culprit is the dust storms that originate from the Dust Bowl portion of the Arena Parking lot. Our petitions to the Village have basically been met with disrespect and inaction. Several so-called dust control measures have been a waste of money and ineffective. Each time a vehicle drives through this lot it raises a dust storm. The frequency of traffic has increased substantially with the installation of the large recycle dumpster – including the regular H.D. Truck service activity. During windy days we suffer from dust storms rolling through the neighborhood . Additional problems happen during late hours when young drivers use the dust bowl to practice do-nut spins which spray dust and rocks in all directions. We have made official presentations to council and staff and offered several cost effective remediation proposals. One effective solution would cost less than one-half of one percent of the annual Village budget all to no avail. In fact, it is our contention that the TNRD ought to contribute upto one-half of the cost, which would reduce the Village cost even further. This is the only gravel/dirt/dust area in the Village...even the Village Works

yard is substantially paved. The dust problem is a major respiratory health issue for a number of residents and, of course a sanitary issue. (Many days residents cannot leave doors or windows open) Furthermore, it is an embarrassing eyesore for residents and visitors alike....... Meanwhile, the Village “...was very surprised to receive a $158,000. grant from the Federal Government Small Communities Fund”...and the TNRD is contributing $$ for some kind of “arena upgrade.” The Village committed $80,000. for a “new rescue truck,” $68,000. for “Fire Department Upgrades,” $30,000. for a “Volleyball court.” (Not to mention a waste of $$ contributed to an obviously ill conceived rebuild to two tennis courts – that are not even on Village property) Personally, I’m beginning to wonder what the “real” cost will be for the curling club property. It seems to me, if the residents need a “week long open house event” to consider what some street improvements (@ unnamed $) “might look like”, surely, the 100 plus residents in the Sun Valley neighborhood could expect a more sincere response from our Village Politicians. Sun Valley Resident Dick Leppky, dicat993@gmail.com

Local children’s book based on real experience Submitted by Glenda Mosher

I wrote the "Little Blind Calf” after a real life experience on our ranch occurred. While e-mailing my family daily describing what we had done from day to day on our ranch, my Cousin encouraged me to write this story. The calf was born blind but had a strong desire to survive! She was struggling to find mama’s udder and upon seeing this we bundled up the baby and raised her in the kitchen until she was strong enough for a pen in the barn. Just as we humans overcome our disabilities so did this little calf. She quickly

learnt our voices for her bottle and later where food and water were placed. She grew into a fine young heifer! The story is just another little way of proving that “Just because you have a Disability” …. “You can still be a Winner”. A sample of this children’s book is available at the Chase Sunflower. Every child, (and even adults) this book is read to enjoys the story immensely. Makes a great gift! The book is for sale for $5.00 from Glenda glengaryranch@gmail.com or 250 6794400, I will deliver! Written and articulated by local people!

VIRTUAL WALK LETS CHASE RESIDENTS MAKE MEMORIES MATTER

As many Chase families know, dementia doesn’t just affect the person diagnosed. Caregivers, family members and friends are also impacted, and caregiving is often required 24 hours each day, 365 days each year. It’s a hugely challenging responsibility -- and one that requires a variety of support. So it’s fitting that Chase caregivers are among the honorees for the Investors Group Virtual Walk for Alzheimer’s. The innovative fundraising event for the nonprofit Alzheimer Society of B.C. allows residents to get involved online. All they have to do is visit www. walkforalzheimers.ca and sign up for a Virtual Walk. Residents can then take a stroll with family and friends on Sunday, May 1 and collect pledges, or make a donation to the campaign. The Virtual Walk is province-wide, and uses the theme “Make memories matter.” “Memories make us who we are,” says the Society’s Special Events Officer, Daphne Tsai. “When you walk, you honor those who have passed and support our work to help provide help and hope for those living with the disease today.

“Everyone will be touched by dementia, whether it’s a relative, a friend or someone in your community. You can make a difference.” Caregiving affects people emotionally and physically. It requires determination, empathy and kindness. And caregivers require support for everything from assisting with legal and financial decisions to helping with everyday tasks. The journey of dementia can’t be made alone. That’s why individuals and teams from Chase are invited to join the Virtual Walk. Funds raised support programs and services in the community that: * improve the quality of life for people living with dementia and for their families * support other activities like education and public awareness Walk for Alzheimer’s is Canada’s biggest fundraiser for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Already approximately 747,000 Canadians have the disease, with 70,000 of them living in British Columbia. That number will nearly double in the next 20 years, as age is the biggest risk factor and people are living longer. Residents who are interested in starting a Walk in the community next year can contact Daphne Tsai at dtsai@ alzheimerbc.org for more information. For more information on local resources to help families live well with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, visit www. alzheimerbc.org.
