Skate Park Ribbon Cutting: Great Photo-Op

he Chase Skate Park committee is gaining momentum for a summer of fundraising and excitement with many events planned. To kick off this season there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony and unveiling of a sign at the location of the future skate park. Mayor and Council will be on site (near the wading pool on Pine Street) at 1 pm on Saturday, June 13th to unveil the sign.

Everyone is welcome to attend, especially youth, and especially youth with boards in tow. This is important because photos and footage showing community support and youth interest are

Grateful Grad Class of 2015

The goal was to raise enough money to cover the costs so that every grad would be able to attend these events without creating a financial burden on any of the families.

Thanks to the generosity of the community, that goal was achieved.

After the commencement ceremony on Friday, May 29th, the CSS Class of 2015 enjoyed a fun and safe night together at a private location near Chase. There was music, food, and activities to keep them going well into the night. The next day, they all got dressed up, and along with family and friends, they attended their dinner and dance at the Adams Lake Indian Band gymnasium. This was a special evening for the grads and their families, and a good time was had by all. None of this would be possible without the support of local business owners, residents of Chase and the surrounding areas, and all of the hardworking students and family members who were determined to make these events happen. It would be impossible to mention every person or business by name, but The CSS Dry Grad Committee would

like to thank everyone for their generous donations and support throughout the year.

There were quite a few fundraisers held during the year, and the community supported us time after time. The class sold poinsettias, participated in the Chase Country Christmas craft fair, held a very successful bottle drive, had a hot dog sale at the Community Hall Flea Market, sold hanging baskets, and hosted a fashion show and silent auction for the community.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Life in Pleasantville

The taxes went up in Chase. Was it because we did not want stinky pellet plant. Some people don’t realize we have a wonderful industry called tourism. We have a beautiful waterfall and Chase Creek which meanders through this mecca I call pleasantville.

Why hasn’t Chase Creek been put to its full potential. I have walked this creek many times its like going into the forest without leaving town. We should have a walkway all along the creek where people could picnic, visit, even fishing for the kids. When the four lane comes through our property taxes will rise, our homes will be worth more money and more taxes. We are, and always will be the bedroom of Kamloops. Enjoy Chase as it is peaceful, quiet. Hopefully we can keep our town a great place to live and adjust to the changes.

Encountering him in the Saharan desert surprises a stranded pilot, and narrator of this story. It would be surprising to meet a very small philosopher dressed in the clothes of a prince anywhere in the world, I think. The little prince asks the pilot to open his imagination and draw him

The prince is very real, but he is also a phantom of childhood, a reminder to look at the very simple and beautiful things that make life worth living.

Simple and spicy pickled radish recipe ready to eat immediately!

Ingredients: 1 bunch radishes ¾ cup white wine vinegar ¾ cup water 3 tablespoons honey 2 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes ½ tsp whole mustard seeds (optional) Slice off the tops and bottoms of the radishes, then use a sharp chef ’s knife or mandoline to slice the radishes into very thin rounds. Pack the rounds into a pintsized canning jar. Top the rounds with red pepper flakes and mustard seeds.

To prepare the brine: In a small saucepan, combine the vinegar, water, honey or maple syrup and salt. Bring the mixture

Obituary

Wendell, Norman Jacob July 29, 1927 – June 6, 2015

Norman Jacob Wendell passed away at the Royal Inland Hospital at the age of 87 surrounded by his family. Norman was born July 29, 1927 in Vernon BC and is predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Rosenna Wendell as well as his two brothers, Jack and Alan Wendell and two sisters Eileen Hamilton & Jeannie DeMarni.

Norman will be greatly missed by his wife of 62 years, Florence Wendell, his children Gerri & Dennis Herbert, Cindy & Ken Bertrand, James & Joyce Wendell. Grandchildren; Norma Herbert, Kelly & Adriana Herbert, Darcy Faulkner, Miranda & Tyson Kamps, James & Shannon Wendell, Katrina Wendell, Kristopher & Dee Wendell as well as great grandchildren; Michael, Christa, Kelly, Percy, Lieneke. Norman is also survived by his brother Fred Wendell, and two sisters Rosemary Hill, & Irene Gorley.

Many numerous nieces, nephews and many dear friends will also miss Norman.

Norman moved his family east to Alberta to pursue a career in Auto Body mechanics. He followed that career until retiring in the Chase area in 2000.

Norman enjoyed camping, fishing, whistling and loved stoking the camp fire. He will be fondly remembered for the many “tin men and bird feeders” he made over the years.

Thank you to the medical staff of the ICU step down unit at the Royal Inland Hospital 309S for your care and compassion during his brief illness.

A celebration of Norman’s life will be held on July 25, 2015 at the Creekside Seniors Hall from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. Should you wish to do so in lieu of flowers donations can made to a charity of your choice in Norman’s name.

Word Search - Shuswap Lake

Shuswap Lake has four arms, forming a shape reminiscent of the letter H. The four arms are called Salmon Arm (southwest), Anstey Arm (northeast), Seymour Arm (north), and the main lake (west). Pésellkwe is lake in Secwepemc. To the northwest it is fed by the Adams River. Shuswap Lake apparently has a monster legend, a 25-foot long serpentine creature, known as “Shuswaggi”. It is great fun to walk around our little Village of Chase to discover the clever things people are doing to brighten up their homes and places of business! This week we found a welcoming outdoor table and seating at Pebbles Place, a garden plot at Interior Savings featuring a unique mix of plants and a real hidden gem at the Underwood Hotel where a restful patio complete with fountain is now available for diners.

A walk down Pine Street will put a smile on everyone’s faces as they spy the really fun way one homeowner has designed a happy garden around a tree stump and another has incorporated “little red wagons” into the landscaping. A little further along people stop to admire the beautiful gardens at Magpie Gallery before continuing on to check out the

beauty of the river at Mill Park.

It’s great too, to see our local Citizens on Patrol out on “Crime Prevention” foot patrols. Not only do they help to make us aware of ways we can protect our vehicles from theft and remind us when our insurance is about to expire, but they are always happy to provide visitors with directions and information about local tourist attractions.

Thanks to everyone for the continuing efforts to do the little things that mean so much to us all. Let’s keep encouraging each other to make a positive difference: the rewards are endless. Local Aboriginal Day Celebrations The Adams Lake Indian Band, Neskonlith Indian Band, Little Shuswap Lake Indian band, Village of Chase, and the Chase & District Festival Society have partnered together to host an Aboriginal Day celebration on June 19th. This is an exciting event to recognize the importance of Aboriginal culture, heritage, and knowledge, in shaping not only our local community but our nation as well.

A variety of events for members of all our communities to attend and participate in.

The night will start off with a free BBQ at 5pm at the Adams Lake Recreation Centre.

Following dinner, there will be workshops on traditional crafts and activities, as well as face painting. There will also be a Lahal Tournament, with registration closing at 6:30 followed by a traditional game and the tournament starting at 7pm.

The committee would like to thank Heritage Canada who has provided financial support for this event, making it free and accessible for everyone to enjoy.
