New Name for Local Society Submitted by Ashton Sweetnam

Our organization is making some changes over the autumn months and we will be changing our name from the Chase and Area Young Learners Society to Chase and Area Family Services. This name change comes as we shift organizational directions towards the goal of filling service gaps in our area that exist for children and families.

We intend to continue with the

programs and services that we have offered since 2019 including: • Nature education programs • Mountain bike programs • Arts & recreation programs • Community building and beautification installations such as pollinator gardens and murals • Advocacy for children and families We are excited for the opportunities that will present themselves with this new directions, and as always, we appreciate the support of our community and look forward to growing together.

Interior Health supporting evacuees returning to Parkside Community in Chase CHASE – Interior Health has begun to support the return of residents to Parkside Community in Chase now that evacuation alerts for that area associated with the Bush Creek East wildfire have been rescinded.

Repatriation will occur gradually and carefully to ensure appropriate staffing and resources are in place when residents return to their homes.

Families will be notified directly as their loved ones are moved back. Anyone wishing to confirm their loved one’s current location can call 1-833-4699800. Hours of operation are Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Messages can be left after hours for a call back.

Interior Health supported the proactive relocation of 53 residents of Parkside Community on Aug. 18 to neighbouring communities due to local evacuation alerts.

As localized alerts and evacuation orders are rescinded, a dedicated team will continue to lead the complex

planning work of repatriating residents and clients to their homes.

Interior Health proactively relocated nearly 900 people from nine seniors care homes due to the threat of wildfire. Seven seniors care homes have already begun repatriating residents home.

Interior Health continues to support the wildfire response in our region, and our heartfelt thanks goes out to our care partners in neighbouring health authorities, first responders, community volunteers and local and provincial governments.

WASPS

They’re everywhere this time of year!

Try dining outside this time of year and suddenly it seems that wasps just won’t leave you alone.

A wasps presence is annoying, their attitude and sting is a source of fear.

Wasps are a helpful part of our ecosystem but they are also a problem.

Now, I am not an entomologist but Seirian Sumner — professor of behavioural ecology at University College London — describes why wasps become such a nuisance in late summer and early fall.

Worker wasps live to collect protein for the colony and particularly for the larvae that are maturing in the colony. Feeding this protein to the larvae, the workers receive their primary food source, which is created by larvae.

In late summer, the birth of larvae decreases as the queen slows and eventually stops laying fertilized eggs. This transition means that worker wasps are ‘furloughed’ as Dr Sumner puts it. These mature wasps lack purpose and meaning and they are also malnourished.

These changes transform normally busy and productive worker wasps into ill-tempered disturbances. These wasps that were once busy keeping their siblings alive are now hungry and bored, brutish and listless. Dr. Sumner describes how this ‘furlough’ — a loss of purpose and lack of meaningful life — radically changes the behaviour of wasps — and largely not for the better.

Meaning and purpose are significant in the lives of worker wasps, and it is important for humans too. We are creatures that crave meaning, that yearn for purpose — and when we lose it, we can hunger for more, and we can become bored or brutish. This loss of purpose is experienced by empty nesters and recent retirees.

What we do brings us meaning and purpose, whether it is raising children or caring for family members, managing people or projects. One of the first questions people often ask of a new acquaintance has to do with employment or vocation — what we do matters, what we do shapes our identity.

Like worker wasps, humans experiencing a ‘furlough’, a loss of purpose and meaning can radically change our behaviour and personality.

Do you ever wonder if there is more to life than this? Does it feel that there might be a greater purpose?

Are we called to something more meaningful than what’s on our job description or our work history?

How we understand ourselves and the meaning we find in our lives can either help us be the people we were always created to be or be bored, listless, or brutish. We are created to enjoy meaning and purpose that runs deep within us.

Alpha is a program that helps people explore meaning and purpose in a warm and relaxed environment where no question is out of bounds and everyone has a chance to explore. Chase EFC will be hosting Alpha this fall on Thursday evenings at Natty Cakes starting September 21st @ 7:30 PM.
