by Carolyn Parks Mintz, Author & Journalist ADAMS LAKE INDIAN BAND (ALIB) Chief & Council News A community engagement gathering was held in early November with regard to lakefront resort development at Sandy Point and Pierre’s Point, to gather input on site configuration and what could be offered as part of the redesign of the area.

Remembrance Day ceremonies were held at the ALIB Spiritual Centre to honour local Indigenous veterans who gave their lives for freedom and peace, as well as to remember all veterans who fought for liberty.

Obituary William (Bill) James McLean May 31,1947- November 18,2022 It is with profound sadness that I announce the sudden passing of Bill McLean at Kelowna General Hospital. Bill is survived by his wife of 38 years Fran McLean and his daughter Christine , grandsons Kyle and Trevor, brother Bruce, his cousin Arlene Minosky as well as many other cousins. He also leaves behind Fran’s brothers and sister, nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews in Manitoba and special friends Ryan, Tarryl, Neil and Lucas Hartling. Bill was predeceased by his two sons Derek and Glenn and his parents Bill and Mary McLean.

Bill was born in Blairmore, Alberta and his family moved to Kamloops when he was a young boy. Bill had a close relationship with his Aunts and Uncles growing up.

Bill spent his entire career with the Ministry of Highways and shared many stories of his work travels across the province. Bill played an important role in the introduction of sealcoating across BC. Bill and Fran moved to Chase from the coast in 2007 and have both enjoyed their small town life. Bill enjoyed camping boating and golfing and was a member of the Chase Legion.

Special thanks to Kelowna General and Kelowna Cancer Clinic for their exceptional care and the compassion shown towards both Bill and Fran. Thanks also to the caring staff at Chase Clinic.

News From First Nations An update: fortunately, the significant structural fire which occurred at the resort in May spared the lodge’s main lobby, pro shop, restaurant, conference centre and spa, all of which had minimal damage. With an adjusted main entrance, the resort was able to resume golf operations, dining in Jack Sam’s lounge, and services at the Le7ke Spa during the summer through to mid-October.

Following a special ceremony, demolition of the burned-out accommodation wing began in September. Closure of the resort took place in October, to allow work on additional projects and enhancements, in preparation for re-opening of the restaurant, golf operations, and the spa in April 2023.

Update from Chief Wilson Chief Judy Wilson was invited to speak at the October Amnesty International Missing &

Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Two Spirited webinar on behalf of the Vancouver MMIWG2S Coalition.

Chief Wilson’s efforts to hold banks accountable for financing fossil fuels have caught the attention of Canadian regulators. She is one of six applicants filing a complaint with Canada’s Competition Bureau, accusing the Royal Bank of Canada of greenwashing, which prompted the regulator to launch an inquiry into whether RBC misled customers about its climate action. RBC has denied the allegations, claiming the complaint is unfounded.

Holding corporations accountable has worked in the past, and although the inquiry could take more than a year, environmental advocates hope that, if successful, it will send a message to the industry and that other banks will take note.

Chief Wilson states that there is no time to waste in cutting emissions, as Indigenous peoples are disproportionately affected by climate change. Chief Wilson, who plans to attend the United Nations Climate Implementation Conference (COP27) in Egypt in November, believes issues must be tackled holistically: politically, legally, technically, spiritually and internationally— something she learned from her late Uncle George Manual, an internationally-renowned Indigenous activist and founder of the World Council of Indigenous Peoples.

Fish and Game Club Update Of course you can’t enter unless you are CDFGC member and have taken an orientation on the rules and regulations, or unless a member brings you up as a guest and orientates the guest on the rules and safe use of the range. On our range we have a Clubhouse that has a kitchen that can feed a group and a large outside deck.

We have one running water toilet at the clubhouse (used in summer) , and 3 brand new vault toilets that are spread out across the range for members. We have a 60 yard archery range for archery practice that members can use anytime except when Trap or Skeet practice is on. We have a Trap field and a Skeet field with throwers for shotguns. The club’s electric throwers are only available under supervision, but any member can bring their own throwers and use the fields. We have a 100 yd rifle range and rifle house and a 25 yd pistol range and shed. We have 2 horse shoe pits and a forested section with trails that is

perfect for setting up 3-D archery targets in the trees and creeks. We have free dry camping for families who come to the range to participate in weekend activities such as our annual 3-D shoot. Many other clubs consider our facilities as one of the nicest to attend. Everyone should at least see what the Fish and Game has to offer our community at least once.

Membership are coming due at the end of December. You can get a membership at Village U-Brew or you can download a membership form off our website at cdfgc. ca on December first for 2023. Locks to the gates will be changed Jan 1st. It costs $5 for the key, which you can’t get until you take a one time range orientation. Our club meets the 3rd Monday of the month at 7 pm at Creekside Senior Center. We do not meet in July and August. We hope to see our club continue to grow. We have had steady growth these last few years which helps keep our club healthy.

A little farewell, Just wanted to do a quick letter, for the Chase Sunflower - our local hero newspaper - to say farewell.

It has been a really neat experience living in a smaller community. Life has a way of changing our plans sometimes though, and I have moved back to my hometown to be closer to family.

To every single person who has shown me kindness, support and friendship during my four years here, especially during this past year, I want to say THANK YOU! Keep being the sweet community that waves to one another, cares passionately about issues that create debate and of course, keep using your local library.

Hockey Team fortunes can be won or lost on the ability to remain healthy during the regular season. In respect to the local Chase Heat as temperatures rise amongst the roster their fortunes have taken a down turn game after game. While not everyone has been down due to everything that has gone around, the overall effect has seen the tires fall off. How they plan to rebound is anybody’s guess and the upcoming schedule is not kind. The past week found the team on the highways to hell for a pair before they came home.

Tuesday, November 15th the faceoff involved the last place 100 Mile House Wranglers. Chase suited up a 3 player short hodge podge roster of the least ill, the Wranglers a full roster. !00 Mile House tallied once in the 1st period. In the 2nd the Wranglers fired 3 more past Roderic May between the pipes. Owen Dean cracked the goose egg on a 2 man advantage for something to cheer about with an assist to Garrett Martin. In the 3rd the Cariboo crew added another counter to provide a 5-1 loss to the Heat. The 100 Mile House play by play crew gave May 1st star honours and it was hard to argue with that as he did his best in trying circumstances.

Back on the road again, Friday the 18th versus the Division rival Sicamous Eagles.

Back between the pipes again Roderic May who once again stood on his head for 40 minutes of “May Day Moments”. After 2 periods it was 5-0 Eagles on 42 shots. Kael Beauregard came on in relief for the final 20 minutes. The highlight for the locals came in the 3rd with veteran rearguard Mikkel Hrechka firing a shot from the right point, helpers to Jalen Davidson and Maddex Bignell. Sicamous out sped the Heat to the tune of 6-1. Another contest that included plenty of lazy penalties as well as those of the self serving but not team helping kind.

The last contest of the week played out at the Art Holding Memorial Arena where the Heat hosted the Summerland Steam. This game featured the Heat getting the first and last goals, while Beauregard drew short straw to stand between the pipes. New kid on the block Hudson Ketsa scored his first Heat goal in front of the home crowd. The Steam then scored 4 times, before Aidan Brown

from Malachi Franklin and Hrechka scored in the late stages of the 3rd period. Lots of sin bin minutes in this one that turned nasty at times. Beauregard gets accolades as time after time the goalies are left to fend for themselves.

Lazy penalties such as tripping, hooking and slashing are often the result of playing a step behind due to being sick and tired. You can’t beat them if you can’t catch them and missed assignments are too often happening.

The fans remain loyal and supportive and hope a revival happens soon.

Next up on the schedule is this Friday in Chase with the Castlegar Rebels coming to town. The Heat then hit the winter highways for a pair, Saturday the 26th in Summerland and the 30th in 100 Mile House. Stay warm and healthy out there!
