Obituary

Rene Evans (Robertson)

It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Lorine “Rene” Evans on November 8th 2018 . Born in St Paul Minnesota June 15th, 1953, she leaves to mourn her husband Greg of 27 years and step daughter Teneill and granddaughter Erika. Predeceased by parents Dr. Hugh Robertson, mother Helen, brother James, and four days later brother Murray (Candace), she is survived by brother Bryan (Jill) and sister Janice Kirychuk (David} and countless nephews and nieces. Wilma Downing influenced Lorine as she excelled in many sports as a student at Sheldon Williams. Through her high school and university years she developed long lasting relationships with so many she called best friends for life. She would go on to play on championship basketball teams, win provincial tennis titles, run track and later enjoyed a run playing 3 years for Canada’s national volley ball team leading up to the 1976 Olympics. She was an academic and when at UBC while playing national volleyball, would finish her Bachelor of Education in 1978 at the University of Regina, all the while returning to play women’s basketball for the university. She accepted a position at Lakehead University coaching the woman’s basketball team and instructing in the physical education degree program. While at Lakehead University she completed her Master of Science degree in 1985. Lorine obtained her Bachelor of Law degree form the U of S in 1988 and shortly after moved to Kamloops BC. She was admitted to the bar in 1989 and while there met her future husband Greg Evans. They were married in 1991 in Regina and enjoyed 27 years all the while practicing law in Kamloops and Chase the last several years with Cates Ford and Epp. Family was always first with Rene and during her parents later years she became a prime care giver and was always there when needed. Rene became an avid gardener (obtain her horticulture degree) and enjoyed cycling along with her husband Greg. Rene was a courageous, generous and loving person and her passing leaves a deep wound in not only her family but in all who new her. A celebration of Rene’s life will be announced at a date forth coming.

Village of Chase - Council Meeting Highlights - November 13, 2018 submitted by the Village of Chase

Thank you to everyone who attended Council’s meeting on November 13, 2018! Council held a public hearing to hear from anyone whose interest in property is affected by the implementation of a land use designation on a portion of property below Hillside Avenue that used to be an

undeveloped road (laneway). The Village had exchanged this piece of land for one adjacent to Hillside Avenue to provide for future road widening. Roads do not have land use until the road is ‘closed to traffic’ and zoning is applied. One written submission was received by Council at the public hearing. After Council resumed the NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING Regular meeting, VILLAGE of CHASE Council considered third reading of VILLAGE of CHASE the Zoning bylaw OFFICIAL COMMUNITY PLAN AMENDMENT BYLAW NO. 859-2018, that had been the OFFICIAL COMMUNITY PLAN AMENDMENT BYLAW NO. 863-2018, subject of the public OFFICIAL COMMUNITY PLAN AMENDMENT BYLAW NO. 864-2018. hearing. Council The Village of Chase Council will be holding a Public Hearing pursuant gave the Zoning to Section 464 of the Local Government Act, to consider amendments bylaw third reading to the Village of Chase Official Community Plan Bylaw No. 635-2002 and adopted the for the following properties shown as “subject property” on the sketch bylaw. Village of Chase. various local area organizations. Councillors Lauzon and Maki agreed to organize the rest of Council and any staff members to participate in decorating a float for the 2018 Chase Country Christmas parade. Council approve a grant-in-aid to the Chase Country Christmas committee to help pay for the liability insurance for their

Christmas store location, and approval was given to close Shuswap Avenue between Haldane and Chase Streets from 4:30 to 8:00 p.m. on November 30, 2018 for the annual Chase Country Christmas Block Party. Councillor Maki’s attendance at the upcoming Shuswap Tourism Fall Networking Event was approved. Council approved the attendance of Mayor Rod Crowe, Councillor Fred Torbohm and CAO Joni Heinrich at the Shuswap Regional Trails Strategy Annual Roundtable Meeting in Sicamous later this month. Council deferred a decision about an annual increase to Council’s remuneration. One of the issues that Council was being asked to consider was whether it wished to have an adjustment made to remuneration to compensate for the change in taxation rules that come into effect January 2019. Currently, 1/3 of remuneration for elected officials is tax exempt, however that rule is changing. Some communities in BC are adjusting the Council’s remuneration to reflect the fact that 1/3 of it will no longer be tax exempt. The issue of providing health benefits to Council members was not pursued. Council received information that the Village has been successful in receiving a grant for $15,000 to help pay for the Village’s Asset Management program. Council received a letter from the Village of Valemount regarding charity gifts for speakers’ presentations at UBCM. Currently a donation is given to charity instead of a gift for a speaker and those charities are typically in the lower mainland. The Village of Valemount wishes that donations on behalf of speakers be provided to charities Province wide. Council received for information an invitation to an Elected Officials’ Legal Orientation session being hosted by Lidstone and Company. A letter from the Chase Royal Canadian Legion was received regarding disparity between the Legion and the Golf Course in relation to an aspect of permissive tax exemptions. The letter will be included in Council’s deliberations regarding permissive tax exemptions in 2019. Council’s next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 27, 2018 starting at 4:00 p.m.

Checking Out the Chase Library submitted by Andy Finnen

Hi, my name is Andy Finnen and I am the Branch Head at the Chase Library. I moved to Chase and started at our little library on Shuswap Avenue in May. It has been a great six months! Everyone has been very welcoming and kind. I asked Kelsey if the Sunflower would like to host a small article on the happenings at the library and she graciously said YES! So for today’s article, I will just introduce myself and let you know what things we may cover in future bits for the Sunflower. For me, the library has always been a magical place. I have worked in school, academic and public libraries in my career. It has definitely changed over the years. I no longer have to search the old card catalogue or date stamp books when they are checked out. Now my days are full and varied, working with patrons

downloading books, signing up for tech workshops, singing with families during a program or any other daily thing that may crop up. The library has so much to offer and that is why I wanted to write an article for the Sunflower. Fun things that you can do with a library card: Borrow the BC Wildlife Park Pass and the City of Kamloops Family Fitness Pass. Use databases that give you access to movies, magazines and newspapers from around the world. Borrow games for gaming consoles, like the WiiU, XBox One and Nintendo Switch. Please stop in and say hi! I look forward to meeting you at the library. Cheers! Chase Library 250.679.3331 www.tnrl.ca

REFLECTIONS ON REMEMBRANCE DAY Remembrance Day is a time of reflection and a reminder of how fortunate we are to be Canadian, a Chase resident, and living in what may be simply put as a life of tremendous freedom. We have so much to be thankful for as a result of the sacrifices made by the women and men who came before us. My Grandfather, Thomas Dick a Scotsman, was in the “War of all Wars”, the First World War and I occasionally read his love letters home to my Grandmother. A different time, a different place and a far harder existence than we enjoy in today’s world, it is hard to imagine the hardships, but the love you can feel. My Dad, Bob Koch enlisted in WW2 and was a wireless operator in the RCAF. Likewise, my soulmate Glenys’ Dad, Bill David, was an aircraft mechanic in the RCAF. Year after year, while my late father was alive, we made it an annual father

son event to attend the Chase Remembrance Day Service. To this day I uphold that special father son bond. Those three men got to come home, something a lot of families lost out on. I consider myself to be a very lucky man, with a responsibility to attend the service out of respect and thanks. The Chase Royal Canadian Legion Branch 107 once again provided a well done Service and warm comraderie afterwards. Furthermore, a graveside ceremony was held at 3:00 pm in recognition of the 100th Anniversary of Armistice. Twenty years ago Glenys and I met at our Legion on Remembrance Day. The day as a result holds an extra special meaning for the two of us, what we consider to be our anniversary. I close by thanking our local Legion for a day well done. Lest We Forget. Scott Koch

WEEKEND REPORT – THE HEAT This past weekend was Remembrance Day on the 11th at which the 100th Anniversary of Armistice brought to our attention the “War of all Wars”, and the sacrifices made by so many for future Canadians. It is as a result of those sacrifices that we enjoy our freedoms and standard of living not found in many places around the world. One of those freedoms is the ability for young men and women to enjoy the pursuit of sports, alongside the many fans, and while so often taken for granted, it shouldn’t be. The 11th is a day of remembrance and a reminder of our good fortune in the pursuit of happiness. Lest we Forget. The Chase HEAT took part in the Remembrance Day Parade and Service and continue through the month of November, to assist the Chase Legion Poppy Campaign through wearing camouflage jerseys that will be silent auctioned on the 24th. The profits from that initiative will be donated to the Poppy Fund. On the hockey front the HEAT enjoyed a successful weekend nabbing 3 of a possible 4 points in a pair of home games. On Friday the 9th the Neil Murdoch Division leading Nelson LEAFS were the opposing team. Nelson is currently one of the top teams in the 20 team KIJHL. In the 1st period the visitors gained a 2 goal lead before Evan Vinterlik scored assisted by Brendan Moore and Breckin Erichuk. In the 2nd the LEAFS popped in 2 more to take a commanding 4-1 lead. Vinterlik with his 2nd from Erichuk and Quinn Slezak gave the homeside hope. Nelson counted another goal, prior to Cam Watson on the man advantage slapping a bullet in the net from Evan Hughes and Brandon Gremaud. In the 3rd the HEAT mounted a gallant comeback, leading scorer Gavin Mattey from Gremaud and Cody Allen, followed by a one timing Allen blasting a point shot into the mesh from Watson and Erichuk. After 60 minutes the game was tied at 5-5. Two 5 minutes periods of overtime changed nothing and the two foes shared a kiss your sister tie, good for a point in the standings.
