Chase Rotary Club Awards

Left Photo: Nancy Behrms received "Spouse Award". Right Photo: Jacquie Everett recognizedBlack as 'The Rotarian that Connects World" 19-0893-03 & White Newspaper Versionthe Size: 4.33”w x 7”h

Chase Rotary selected Jacquie Everett as 'The Rotarian that Connects the World". On October 17/19 the current District Governor presented Jacquie with her award when he visited the Chase Rotary Club. This award recognizes a Rotarian's contribution and the recipient is selected by their peers and therefore, carries a lot of recognition by those who work side by side with Jacquie. As noted during this presentation, she was surprised, unaware and totally humbled by such an award. The second award that was presented by the Governor, was the Chase Rotary Club's "Spouse award" recognizing a person who volunteers and contributes to the successful completion of a number of fundraising opportunities that Chase Rotary gets involved with during the course of a year. This year's recipient is Nancy Behrms, wife of Kym. Congratulations to both Jacquie and Nancy!

Ingredients 1 head green cabbage 1 lb ground pork 1/2 lb ground beef 2 small onions diced 3 cloves garlic minced 1/2 teaspoon dill weed 3 tablespoons fresh parsley 1 can diced tomatoes (14 oz) salt & pepper to taste 1 cup uncooked rice 1 egg 1 1/2 cups + 1/3 cup tomato sauce or pasta sauce divided 1 can tomato soup Instructions Boil cabbage leaves about 2 minutes or until soft. (See note below for removing leaves). Set aside to cool. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cook rice according to package directions but reduce cooking time by 5 minutes so the rice is slightly underdone. Set aside.

Cook beef, pork (or turkey), onions, garlic & seasonings until no pink remains. Drain any fat. Add in rice, diced tomatoes, 1/3 cup of tomato/pasta sauce, salt & pepper. Stir in egg. Mix tomato sauce and tomato soup in a bowl. Spread a very thin layer of the tomato sauce mixture in a 9x13 pan. Remove or thin any thick stem on cabbage leaves. Lay the cabbage leaf flat and add 1/3 cup filling to the center of the leaf. Fold in the sides and roll the cabbage up. Place seam side down in the pan. (See note for small leaves). Repeat with remaining cabbage. Pour sauce over the cabbage and cover tightly with foil. Bake 75-90 minutes. Let cool 15 minutes before serving.

Benedetto hot in the Heat’s crease by Emanuel Sequeira, photo from Peter Kalasz Photography

It didn’t take long for Vince Benedetto to develop a strong bond with his Chase Heat teammates. “I’m a pretty social guy. Arriving a little late, it’s not too hard for me to connect with the boys,” says the Edmonton native. “It’s been really good so far. All the boys have been awesome.” The 20-year-old goalie joined the Heat from the Red Lake Miners in the Superior International Junior Hockey League. Heat coach Brad Fox was able to snag Benedetto since the Miners had an “exceptional” 20-year-old goalie and couldn’t carry two. The Heat reached out through a liason they had with the Miners and made it work. “Any time you can get a quality 20-year-old goaltender in this league, it makes all the difference in the world,” says Fox, after his team picked up a 6-2 road win against Grand Forks with Benedetto between the pipes. “They add to the win column for you.” Benedetto has stolen three to four games for the Heat, which Fox says, “that’s worth its weight in gold. You can’t put a price tag on that.” The opportunity to handle a heavy workload was something the goalie didn’t want to pass up. “Nothing but good things so far, I’m loving it,” says Benedetto, who is 6-3 with a 2.63 goals against average and .929 save percentage. He has earned game star for the Heat four times already. “We have been playing awesome as a team. Offence is great, defence is great. We have been connecting really well out there,” says Benedetto. “The team has been playing really well in front of me. I have to give a lot of credit to the boys. They have been making it really easy for me

back there.” Benedetto has been impressed with the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL), saying it is comparable to the SIJHL. “I was very surprised coming out here, the skill level is unreal,” he says. “Nothing but good things about the league. Top notch.” At five-foot-11, 175 pounds, Benedetto says quickness is his strength and puck tracking. He has good vision and because of his size, tries to play higher out. Idolizing Jonathan Quick, Benedetto tries to play similar to the two-time Stanley Cup champion. He loves to play the puck, which is essential to the Heat’s break out, especially defenceman. An area that Benedetto, or Benny to his teammates, works on to improve is his rebound control and calmness in goal. In the short time with the Heat, he has adopted the inner drive to chase their goal of winning the Okanagan Conference, then the KIJHL. “Our coach has been saying it since day one, since I have been here,” said the well-spoken Benedetto. “It’s going to be a battle to win the conference. We can do that. That would be unreal to bring that back to Chase.” What Fox loves about Benedetto is how composed he is in goal. Fox described Benedetto as very methodical and understanding when to challenge shooters and when to play deep. “He pushes pucks away. The rebound control is exceptional,” says Fox. “He battles hard for rebounds. The poise is amazing. He has got the same demeanour all the time. That's a great quality in a goaltender.”

Obituary Shelest, (Alice) Lesia Olive 1930 - 2019

It is with great love and sadness that we share the news of the passing of Alice Shelest. Alice passed away on November 1, 2019 in Kamloops, BC from complications in the final stage of Alzheimer’s. Alice was born Lesia Olive Sorochan August 17, 1930 in Lamont, AB to Ukrainian Canadian parents. As a young child, starting school was difficult for the shy young girl as she spoke little English. Her family moved a few times but she found her ground in Prince George, along the way attending business college in Edmonton and serving as a civilian member stenographer of the armed forces. She met Frank in Prince George, marrying in 1953 and they were blessed with their two children. The family relocated to Needles, BC in 1957 and to Chase in 1959 where they stayed for many years to raise their family, living an active life until they found the need to move to Kamloops in 2014. Mom was a fabulous homemaker, wife and mother. She was a great cook, gardener, crafter and sewer. Many will remember her decorating their wedding cakes, buying her amazing petit point and viewing award winning entries to area fall fairs. Although she had a busy home life, she worked alongside Frank in their endeavours involving the community, Lady Lions, Lions, the Curling Club, Arthritis Society, Chase Queen’s Committee and the Salute to the Sockeye. Alice was a charter member of the Chase Lady Lions and one of the first five women to be inducted into the Chase Lions Club. She earned community recognition as Chase Citizen of the Year in 1998. Many Lions awards made her proud and you would rarely see her without her small Lions collar pin. Alice had a strength and resilience that bode her well through her life and she would never back down from a planning challenge involving family or community event. She enjoyed and valued the ‘coffees’ with friends and neighbours and the travels she and Frank took. Offering particular peace were the short but meaningful times they spent together at Lion’s conventions and their intermittent camping trips. Alice will be missed by her loving husband of 66 years, Frank and their children Sandy (Glenn) Vogstad of Kamloops, Rob (Sherree) of Princeton, her grandchildren Lee (Yuki) Vogstad, Tessa (Scott) Cooper, Jen Shelest and Nikki (Brad) Wutke, great-grandchildren, Lily, Dylan, Leland, Emily and Noah. She was predeceased by brothers Robert and David, survived by her older brother Walter (Lucy) and sister Marie. Alice was so lucky to have her many in-laws as best friends. Many nieces and nephews will remember her smile and loving nature. The family would like to thank the staff of Kamloops Seniors Village for their care and understanding of Mom’s needs. In lieu of flowers donations in Alice’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or Chase Lion’s Club, Box 12, Chase, BC V0E 1M0. No service at this time. A WEEK OF MIXED RESULTS submitted by Scott Koch

The local Chase HEAT managed to lose on the road, win at home and get a point in a double overtime loss in front of the fans at the Chaos Castle. There aren’t too many other scenarios a team could manage in a span of 5 days. Add to that the opposition was some of the best in the KIJHL and 3 points out of 6 is a decent outcome, or is it? Forrest Gump and his box of chocolates would have a hay day analyzing the three outcomes. It was an emotional period experienced by fans, volunteers, staff and the players, a stumble, a step up and finally a trip. So, Tuesday night and a meeting in the central Cariboo versus the 100 Mile House WRANGLERS. In a reversal of roles the HEAT tried to out wrangle the WRANGLERS and after 52 penalty

minutes discovered it didn’t work. The Cariboo Cowboys managed 3 powerplay goals and that was more then enough to claim a 4-1 win. 4 ½ minutes in Colton Nikiforuk struck gold from Rhys Lepine. What followed was a circus of absurdity as lazy penalty after lazy penalty set the table for defeat. Friday night in the Village our friends the Kelowna CHIEFS paid a visit to the Art Holding Memorial Arena. At the outset of the game a brief tribute to the late great Grant Sheridan, owner/ governor/general manager of the CHIEFS was presented. Grant passed at 47 in July, he was a visionary for the future of the KIJHL and a close ally of the HEAT. He will truly be missed. In a turn around performance, the HEAT allowed the visitors an opening man advantage goal. The 1st period ended 1-0 visitors. In the 2nd the local muskets fired a trio of volleys past one of the best goalies in the KIJHL. Brandon Gremaud aided by Haden Nordick and Gavin Mattey, followed by Luke Recchi assisted by Cam Watson. Hayden Wiebe popped the 3rd tally in from Breckin Erichuk and Nordick, after 40 minutes 3-1 for Chase. in the books as a 4-1 win over very good competition. After a stumble and a step up, we now arrive at another misstep or trip. A Saturday night special on November 9th featuring the Doug Birks Division leading Revelstoke GRIZZLIES. Faced once again with excellent competition the visiting Mountain Mecca Bears roar off to a 3 goal lead on 5 shots in the first 3 minutes and 25 seconds. Having dug a deep hole in the hopes of success the HEAT pop in a powerplay goal from Evan Hughes assisted by Nikiforuk and Mattey. The GRIZZLIES add one to their lead, its 4-1 after 20 minutes. In the 2nd Mattey from Biensch followed by Erichuk on the man advantage from Nikiforuk and Hughes, draws Chase to within one. However, before 40 minutes is done, the Stoke lads add to their total, its now 5-3. In the wild west 3rd, Erichuk from Haden and Corson Nordick gets the HEAT close. Watson ties the game on a blast assisted by Brett Alexander. Mattey then bulges the twine from Evan Vinterlik and Watson and the locals take the lead. The GRIZZLIES find a way to pop a counter and regulation play ends 6-6. In double overtime the visitors stick a dagger in the hearts of players and fans with the game winner, 7-6. A single point is earned from the 60 minute tie. The HEAT visit Nelson and Castlegar next weekend on a two game road trip to the West Kootenays. The next clash at the local Chaos Castle is Saturday the 23rd versus the POSSE from Princeton. Heat Beat: Saturday night the game commenced with a colour party from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 107-Chase. All in attendance took a moment to respect and honour our veterans and the sacrifices made on our behalf. The HEAT for a 3rd year are wearing camouflage jerseys for the month of November. At months end they will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to the Poppy Fund to assist local veterans. Never forget the courage, the love, the hope given to us by those who survived and those who did not. LEST WE FORGET.
