An on-call casual employment opportunity in the Village Office for an on-call casual office assistant.

The on-call casual office assistant is required to provide occasional fill-in support to the Village administration.

Obituary

Virginia “Ginny” Barkman

Virginia “Ginny” Barkman passed away on February 24, 2024, at the age of 71 years, of natural causes. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. Born Virginia Elise Bucklew in Columbus, Ohio on April 24, 1952, she was the daughter of Lewis V. Bucklew and Isabelle A. Bucklew. Ginny lived most of her adult life in Chase, British Columbia following her marriage to Charles “Chuck” Barkman on March 20, 1998.

Ginny graduated from The Ohio State University, with a degree channeling her interests in natural science and math education.

Ginny will be remembered for her strong artistic spirit that resonated in her watercolor and acrylic paintings, pen and ink drawings, framing design, Ukrainian egg dyeing and knitting projects. Her talents were recognized by others, having won several juried art awards at local festivals. She took her appreciation and talents further through her efforts as an avid and ecologically minded gardener of common and unusual fruits and vegetables, accented with the colorful array of flowers that attracted birds and butterflies into her backyard. She shared this diverse educational background and expertise in the arts with family, friends, students, fellow seasoned artists, and those wanting to learn the skill.

In addition to her parents, Ginny is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Chuck Barkman, her grandparents, Virgil and Virgie Bucklew of Coshocton, Ohio, Joseph and Susie Antol of Canton, Ohio, and sister, Jane Hutt of Olympia, Washington.

She is survived by her cherished daughters Melissa Tinzmann (Eric Banta) of Maryland Heights, Missouri and Erica Ly (John) of Webster Groves, Missouri, her dear step-sons Rick Barkman (Jolene) of Chase, British Columbia and Bryan Barkman, of Florissant, Missouri, her beloved grandchildren Kaleb, Harper, Bridgette, and Grayson, her sister Jennifer Schwarz (Peter) of Lewisville, North Carolina, brothers Daniel Bucklew (Patricia) and David Bucklew (Carole) both of Westerville, Ohio, Paul Hutt (brotherin-law) of Olympia, Washington, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, and steadfast friends.

Those wishing to honor Ginny’s memory can consider planting a tree or making a donation of one’s choice to an organization supporting the arts or nature, to help carry on her passion.

Chase & Area Family Services – New Programming is a Hit!

Formerly the Chase & Area Young Learners Society, a newly named and formatted organization is providing specialty programmes and choices for children and families.

The recently incorporated not-for-profit group, Chase & Area Family Services (CAFS), recognized gaps in what was available within the Village and area—and set about addressing those disparities.

Programming founded by a group of families with young children in 2019 has steadily evolved, to meet the CAFS mandate of providing opportunities for children and families in the Chase area to access resources, activities, and community spaces that will enhance quality of life.

That process of development has involved some very special projects including artistic murals and modules, pollinator gardens, plant sales, cycling programmes, and the EverWild Explorers group that explores nature-immersion for 5 to 12-year-olds—whether that be birds and their nests or cooking over a winter fire.

However, in addition to outdoor activities, CAFS Executive Director Ashton Sweetnam emphasizes that one of the key aspects of the group’s Riverstone Resource Centre is to provide a functional space for indoor events.

“We’ve recently offered well-attended family yoga, a cardmaking workshop, a play group, and Mash Music Mondays,” reports Ashton, “as well as a science club and a social get-together, all led by prescreened, experienced individuals and CAFS volunteers. However, while it’s great to have our own space, it is limited in size, and we are often seeking larger

locations for programmes, in order to reduce wait lists.”

In addition to outdoor education and physical activities, the arts component of CAFS options has been well developed.

Artistic programming has been offered each summer and will be available again in 2024. Executive Director Ashton reports that last summer an arts team of 17 to 20 year old locals secured space on Shuswap Avenue which was dedicated to artsbased activities. They offered three weekly classes to various age groups on topics such as drawing, sketching, painting, the murals, and mixed media art, which were presented in a ‘light’ format to keep it all fun for the participants—as well as for the summer-job team who ran the successful undertaking.

Many of the CAFS programmes are free of charge, while others involve minimal fees to cover necessary costs. Bursaries are also available when such support is helpful to families wishing to access events or activities.

“It’s important that what we are able to offer is accessible to as many locals as possible,” reports Ashton. The foregoing, as well as the CAFS mandate, are enthusiastically supported by its volunteer Board of Directors: Shannon Byrnes, Lexie Redel, Roy Hegelstad, Jen Fryatt, Kate Cairnie, Gulshat Valishina, Breanne Boivin, Kary Pittendreigh, and Bev Amundrud.

Recent CAFS growth—and its ongoing expansion—were made possible by a grant provided by the Community Services Recovery Fund, through three national funders: the Canadian Red Cross, the Community Foundations of Canada, and the United Way Centraide

Canada. This funding is designed to enable organizations serving diverse communities to adapt and modernize their services following the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic.

CAFS currently has two paid staff and hires about ten additional staff during the summer. In addition to its Executive Director, Kassidy Porlier has been hired as Resource Manager, involved with programme planning and implementation, along with administrative duties. The organization hopes to create additional jobs in the future.

Another important aspect of CAFS is its partnerships with local First Nations communities. “The process of working to ‘de-colonize’ our operation is ongoing and supports the goals of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission,” states Ashton. “Inclusivity has been one of the founding factors of CAFS since its inception. For example, with our music programmes we ensure a child can participate regardless of their skill level or reading ability. We find ways to include them. And we plan to offer Early Years programming for children zero to five years of age, as well as for youth 13 to 18 years, in the future.”

Ashton goes on, “CAFS is not a social services agency, but we hope to offer access to various service providers with regard to parenting programmes, occupational counselling, and physiotherapy by having these professionals available at our location, thereby eliminating the need for transportation and travel to them. CAFS could serve as a satellite office for such services, but that will depend on funding and development.”
