The Editor’s Spot: by Kelsey Snelgrove Let’s Not Wreck Ourselves

I found myself awake in the middle of the night last week. Instead of doing some deep breathing to get back into a slumber, I tapped the smart phone to life and began a sleepless quest to personally right the Internet of all the misunderstandings, lies, and scams. When the sun rose, my family found me bleary-eyed, and rambling about the state of critical thinking skills in our society.

We have all heard the phrase “fake news” ad nauseum in the last year.

But this “awareness” doesn’t seem to be creating a more truth-filled media landscape. At all. It seems to have backfired, with huge swaths of people rejecting the “mainstream media” and turning to alternative sources.

As a punk at heart, that SOUNDS great to me in theory, because yes, history has shown us that we do need to question the government and media institutions. But when the “alternative” sources peddle harmful conspiracy theories with no reliable sources or facts, we have a problem.

Now I won’t target specific sources, but I am wondering what is the point of rejecting the “mainstream” media if you are just going to be spoonfed all of your ideas from one or two other sources. That’s like the punk who snubs their nose at H&M, and then buys their whole wardrobe at Hot Topic in the mall.

If you are exclusive to one or two

websites that cater to what you already believe, it allows you to go further and further into your biases without checking them. As the old adage goes: you’d better check yourself, before you wreck yourself... or wreck the rest of us.

Of course, conspiracy theories aren’t anything new, but what is new is the speed at which they spread and turn to public pronouncements.

With more and more Canadians using social media to get their news, we all have power and responsibility.

From urban legends to fake coupons to politically-charged tales designed solely to incite anger, we all need a discerning eye and to chill on the ‘share’ button until we have given it the critical once-over.

Sometimes it feels like a lot to ask of the average person.

The real-world consequences may seem abstract, especially from a warm bed at 4 in the morning, but every falsehood that is shared muddies the water a bit more. It becomes exponentially harder and harder to know what to believe.

As technology writer Zeynep Tufekci argues: “The most effective forms of censorship today involve meddling with trust and attention, not muzzling speech itself.”

I’d like to continue the conversation on identifying biases and using critical thinking to navigate the Internet; I’d love feedback on what you think.

Even though we strive to avoid overload, sometimes life delivers unavoidable extra work or commitments. That’s when it’s time to take a serious look at the three R’s: Reduce, Reschedule or Re-assign. It can be done.

Too often society tends to label us by ‘what we do’ rather than ‘what we are.’ It’s OK to buck that trend, to give ourselves permission to be tired and to rest, to say ‘No, I can’t manage that,’ to ask for help, to explore options, to take time for selfcare—and to do any of these without guilt or worry, the most useless of human emotions.

We are not our jobs, not our kids, not our parents, nor our accomplishments, or our partner’s title. We are complex and individual, trying to learn the art of living well in the midst of living. Find a quiet place to simply exist, whether it be in a park, by a lake, on a mountain, in a bubble bath, or just in your mind. We all benefit from such times of self-indulgence.

Achieving balance throughout one’s life means there will be balance when we retire from formal work—because retirement is a whole new box of frogs.

What is to be done with all the extra time?

Travel? Work part-time? Volunteer? Help with the dear grandchildren? Don’t want to stagnate. And the retired husband can be a challenge if he hasn’t planned for life after the job. It’s all about adjustment and purpose.

There have been a number of suggestions in this piece and there’s just one more thing to add: you don’t have to buy into any of them. That’s right, change nothing, but embrace your life as it is. It is after all yours!

But remember if life is sometimes a zoo, become the zookeeper. If it’s a circus, become the ringmaster…or the clown!

A PASTORAL PERSPECTIVE: THE WORLD AROUND US

by Tyler Harper So what do you think of the world around us?

I am not talking about the lakes, hills, and trees. I mean something deeper. Where we come from and what era we came of age in changes how we see the world around us. We basically have three options of how we perceive things around us: the world is getting better, staying the same, or getting worse.

These different ways of seeing the world mean that perfection is either: just around the corner— in the next technological advance, a pipe dream that is impossible— something that will never happen, or it is something that the world is devolving from— we had a golden age which is becoming a distant memory.

I was born in the second half of the twentieth century and came of age in a world that was adopting new technologies at an alarming rate. Car phones turned into cell phones that turned into smart phones.

Foreign countries went from places that were experienced in books and between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. on the CBC to places that can be experienced in real time. Democratic uprisings went from something that we supported through the slow grind of government bureaucracy to crowd funding.

It seemed that the utopia of the Star Ship Enterprise was just around the corner. It's not that traveling at the speed of light was anywhere nearby, but the ability to communicate across languages and cultures

felt to be just an invention or two away from reality.

We were told that the world was the most peaceful it had ever been.

But this doesn't seem to be the world we experience today.

The distant conflicts of far flung countries came to the shores of North America on a warm September day in 2001.

Our innocence was broken and now our western nations are coming apart at the seams.

Hate and violence seem to be spreading and even in our backyard.

Our hearts break with the news of innocence lost, of lives taken— for no reason.

Life doesn't seem to be just an innovation away. We don't seem to be one great idea away from anything— other than more problems.

This begs the question, so what do you think of the world around us?

But while the world around us may show the cracks that were always there, we can still have hope.

Hope is possible if it is grounded in something bigger than ourselves.

Hope is impossible when our world ends with you and I, with humanity.

But when we look to something greater than family and friends, greater than nationality and background, greater than humanity as whole.

So, what do you think of the world around us?

MP Concerned by Mounting Public Debt

Press Release Mel Arnold, Member of Parliament for North Okanagan- Shuswap, is calling the federal budget presented in the House of Commons Tuesday another failure for the Trudeau government.

“Never has a government created so much debt to accomplish so little,” MP Arnold said. “Rather than exercising some fiscal responsibility, the Trudeau government has chosen to add another $18 billion to Canada’s public debt- debt that Canadians will be paying back for decades to come.”

Budget 2018’s projected deficit of $18 billion follows federal deficits of $17.8 billion and $19.9 billion in 2016-17 and 2017-18, respectively. During the 2015 campaign, Trudeau promised to keep deficits under $10 billion and for only two years. Budget 2018 also forecasts deficit budgets for the coming 27 years adding $450 billion of public debt.

MP Arnold did identify possible opportunities for the North OkanaganShuswap in some budget proposals. “Over the past couple of months, I have worked with elected leaders from across the riding to identify needs and priorities of the people we represent and I submitted these to the Minister of Finance,” MP Arnold said. “Budget proposals for housing, dealing with the growing opioid crisis and improving water supply on reserves align with needs identified in these consultations and I will be tracking these initiatives and others to help connect federal funds with projects in local communities.”

However, other funding needs and priorities identified by communities and submitted by Arnold such as municipal water and waste water infrastructure, Trans-Canada highway improvements, aquatic invasive species prevention in BC and an elimination of the new escalator tax on spirits, beer and wine were not provided for in the budget.

MP Arnold concluded, “I am committed to connecting constituents with the opportunities that this budget may represent and will also continue to advocate for a fiscal policy that supports our communities without creating increased tax burdens that future generations will have to pay back.”

Dear Kelsey, You gave a rewarding glimpse into the life of an editor and parent last week in “Puzzling Metaphor”. Internal grins spread through your readers, many of us picturing bits of the Sunflower, the jigsaw and a blossoming child; merging.

But the extraordinary account by Wilf Bennett is the reason for this letter.

Missing the proofreading stage left us an evocative picture curiously true to time and character. I hope embarrassment to your editorial side is not too deep; the strength of Wilf ’s personality is likely to have transcended the gaff.
