Sudoku
EASY
Directions Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook penne according to package directions. Meanwhile, heat butter and oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook onions for 10-15 minutes, stirring often. Once they’ve become caramelized, add the mushrooms and cook another 4-5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from the pan, and set aside. In the same pan, add the chicken thighs. (If needed, add another drizzle of oil.) Cook for 7-10 minutes, or until golden brown on both sides and cooked through. Remove from pan and set aside. Return onion and mushroom mixture to the skillet. Add heavy cream, and stir well, scraping all the bits from the bottom the pan. Simmer on medium-low for 2-3 minutes, or until cream has reduced slightly. Taste for seasoning, and adjust as needed. Slice the chicken into large pieces. Add the cooked, drained pasta to the sauce, along with the sliced chicken and parsley. Toss well, and serve with freshly grated Parmesan cheese.

To the Chase Sunflower, My name is Mitch Ward and I work doing outreach to migrant workers with Kamloops Immigrant Services. As we enter another growing season, I just wanted to write a little note recognizing the important contributions of a group of people who often receive very little attention for their contribution to our local food systems. Each year migrant farm workers travel from their home country to work on farms in the Thompson-Nicola and several end up living in or around Chase. They come from several different countries including Mexico, Guatemala and Jamaica. Workers often leave their home in hopes of supporting their family and their labour has come to be relied on at many farms in the region. They are usually employed on a work permit that lasts from a number of months up to two years and only lets them work for one specific employer. During this time, they pay taxes, EI and CPP while filling a labour shortage that has been identified by the federal government. There are thousands of these workers who come to the Interior each season and they do everything from picking cherries, to driving tractors to sorting grapes. However, while here, they face a number of unique challenges. From isolation, to difficulty accessing services because of language, to a lack of recourse in situations of abuse. Furthermore, the COVID-19 has had a particularly devastating impact on migrant farm workers across the country who often live in communal bunk-houses and face many barriers when it comes to accessing healthcare. Within this context, many farm workers and advocates are pushing for change. Freedom to move between employers and improved working conditions are usually at the forefront in calls for something better and would dramatically improve worker safety. The challenges that these workers face are often rooted in the rules of programs they work under, but any meaningful change will require a collective shift on the ground as well. As those of us who live on this land, we must these your voices infamily our community Happy Thanksgiving to include you and planning, our local food movements and in our dreams for a world with justice for all. CHASE STREET LIGHT REPLACEMENT
Dan's Plumbing & Gas
What is the street light replacement project and why is our community participating? Over the next few weeks, BC Hydro will be replacing high pressure sodium (HPS) street lights in Chase and across the province with energy-efficient LEDs. This is an important project to meet federal regulations that require all light ballasts containing Poly-Chlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) be removed by the end of 2025. Across Canada, many communities are

switching to LED street lights for much the same reason people are using them in homes: They use far less energy, are more reliable, last longer, and are more sustainable. ○ LED street lights also help improve public safety by increasing the visibility of sidewalks and roads at night, as well as help reduce light pollution. ○ The project will begin on April 5th and should complete by April 14th. ○ We will be converting 178 lights.

Obituary Douglas Kieth Piggott Sept. 2, 1978 – Mar. 8, 2021 “Gone too soon” It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas Piggott. Left to mourn is his grief-stricken family: his mom Maureen (Terry), dad Bill (Cindy), sisters Monica (Ewald), Cora, Pam (Dan) and Cheara, stepbrother Steven, grandpa Jim Piggott as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Doug will be remembered for his love of hunting, fishing, biking, and camping. Doug also enjoyed his time at Sun Peaks, where he worked on the ski hill and volunteered on the Fire Department. He was also employed at Mica Dam as a custodian where he was regarded for his work. For those that remember, Doug was a “neat freak”. Most people will remember Doug for his Chatty personality; he was a social butterfly and had a great love for his friends and family. Doug was the type of person who was always willing to help. It didn’t matter if it was moving furniture or working on mechanics on a friend’s vehicle, he always liked to be a part of things. This being said, he would look for where the action was going on, he was a thrill seeker, always seeking out the next adventure! Doug had a great love of animals. In lieu of flowers a donation to the SPCA or Wildlife Federation in Doug’s memory would be a great way to honor him. Our families will never be the same as Doug’s passing has left a huge void in our lives. Part of us went with you ~ we love you Doug. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Now, with the travel option gone, people are flocking to the local trails where they can experience the beneficial power of nature. command our attention, including some massive old growth Douglas fir vets with their blackened thick bark from a long-ago forest fire, the giant leaners that defy gravity, the large, twofoot diameter fir that splits into two trunks just a few feet off the ground, the wizened, twisted and bent scrub tree and the wildlife rich snags that are slowly decaying. It is a steep, challenging climb up the hillside, but well worth it as these hikes are such a great way to exercise. Last year, I was able to do the hike 142 times and this year it could be even more this winter, given that warm temperatures deter us from skiing. One day, the Lee Creek Bluffs will hopefully become well-used by the public, as part of the CSRD trail network, as it has been in the parks plan for over a decade and the Trail Alliance has prepared the initial design. We are privileged to live in the Shuswap where there is so much accessible public land to explore and so many diverse trails to enjoy.
