Arena Named $100K Winner of Reno Contest

n Monday, March 18th some very news was announced in Chase, and along with it comes a six figure dollar amount. The Vancouver Canucks, in collaboration with LiUNA Local 1611 have named the Art Holding Memorial Arena as the $100,000 winner of the “Game Changer Reno” contest. The winner was chosen by a select panel of judges.

“Answering the phone and hearing the news brought me close to tears,” said Owen Christon, Facility Manager, Rink Rats Contracting. “Winning the “Game Changer Reno” contest will boost current plans to update the arena.”

Obituary

Glenna Anne Berry September 27, 1956 – March 8, 2024

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our mom, Glenna. She passed away comfortably in the early morning of March 8th with us by her side.

Mom is predeceased by; her dad Henry, mom Evelyn, husband Bill and brother Daryll. She will be forever loved and missed by her daughter Kari, son Mitch (Terra), sister Elaine (Ken), grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and her fur babies Willie, Taz and Levi.

Mom spent her early years growing up in Chilliwack and eventually moved to Surrey/Delta where she worked and raised her family. Mom was an avid ball player who dominated first base and kept the outfield on their toes when she was at bat. When she wasn’t playing her own ball, she was still at the field coaching and cheering on her kids.

In 1998, mom met the love of her life, Bill, through a radio station dating line, they made an instant connection and shared a life together for 19 years.

They loved road trips, often holding hands along the drive and taking in the beauty of B.C. They moved to Chase in 2013, immediately falling in love with its small-town vibe, the lake, and the people.

Mom had a passion for bowling and playing darts; she would fire a dart or bowling ball with accuracy and force. The friendship and support of her bowling/ dart family meant a great deal to her, especially after the loss of her husband in 2017.

Mom endured many years of ongoing health challenges, including two separate lung transplants that she faced with courage, strength, and positivity.

Mom showed us how to never give up hope, to always rise to a challenge and fight with grace. Her unwavering grit and determination to make the best of every moment is a true testament to the strong, amazing woman she was.

Through thoughtful gestures, mom always went above and beyond to let you know she cared and was thinking of you, but don’t be fooled, if she felt you had wronged her, you’d be sure to get a phone call! Family was everything to mom, and one of her greatest highlights was being Great Granny G to Declan, Paisley, and Mya. Mom loved crafts and spent endless hours scrapbooking, cardmaking, sewing, doing diamond art and macrame. She was always trying new recipes and the family will especially miss her delicious desserts.

Mom had an infectious laugh and was famous for her silly faces and funny noises. The past few summers mom enjoyed going out on the family boat, taking in the views, and soaking up the sun.

Mom, you were always our biggest fan, our loudest cheerleader, and our fiercest protector; our boat rides, ballgames and life just won’t be the same without you. We will forever cherish our memories and you will always be in our hearts.

SECWÉPEMC LANDMARKS PHASE II The Landmarks project team is pleased to have submitted to Kukpi7 and Councils, for their feedback and approval, the six Landmarks Phase II artist designs.

The sculptures are to be installed during the spring of 2024 at the following locations: Tsutswecw Park, Quaaout Lodge, Stelteglxús (Chase Creek Falls), Skmana Lake, Cpéqetkwe (White Like)—and will reflect Secwépemc oral histories which were shared by local Elders.

ADAMS LAKE INDIAN BAND (ALIB) Welcome to the ALIB Team The ALIB Title & Rights group welcomes Nicole Wood, RPF, as Government Relations Manager, supporting governmental agreements and advancing ALIB interests related to forestry, stewardship, and land, as well as natural resources. Nicole’s career encompasses forestry and resource management, as well as yoga instruction and forest therapy which fosters wellness and connection to the natural world.

Gagan Gil, Certified Medical Office Administrator and Hospital Unit Clerk, has joined Sexqeltqin Health & Family Wellness as a medical office assistant.

Having more than two years experience with the Kamloops and Skeetchestn Indian Bands, Gagan has also been employed by healthcare organizations, medical clinics, and long-term care homes.

His ALIB responsibilities will include assisting and directing clients, as well as providing crucial administrative and operational support to health care providers.

ALIB member Pam Nevdoff, with seven years experience, has been hired as a Clinical Counsellor, providing mental health counselling, and working on-site in Glen Eden.

Okanagan College graduate Naomi August has joined ALIB as the Community Navigator assistant, having six years involvement with governmentto-government collaboration as a core team member for many boards and working groups.

Snowrose Dennis, member of ALIB, is the new Community Career Coordinator with Social Development at the Wellness Centre.

With three years experience at Indigenous Services Canada, the Salvation Army, and Island Health, Snowrose will assist ALIB members with employment support, as well as enrolment in training, workshops or educational programmes which will enhance their employability.

Kelly Jacobson, Okanagan Nation and Penticton Indian Band member, comes to the ALIB Wellness Department Team as Social Worker, with over 12 years in that field, having worked in family support and advocacy.

ALIB Member Ginger Bakken, has returned to the area from Northern BC, and is the new Custodian at the Sexqeltqin Health & Family Wellness centre.

K’omoks Nation member Dana Chapman, with University degrees in Indigenous Specialization Social Work as well as related experience, is pleased to be providing comprehensive counselling support to ALIB members as needed.

January 27th—a year that involved both progress and challenges. Securing funding for band initiatives has been a priority. Council has been actively engaged with Indigenous Services Canada and the Federal Government in this regard.

Two new band offices have been an exciting development, providing improved working environments for NIB staff.

Progress has been made regarding land development in Salmon Arm, which holds the potential for significant future financial benefits for NIB. Community events were enjoyed over the last 12 months as well, particularly the Mother’s Day Breakfast and the barbecue for NIB members and Pow Wow guests honouring NIB students graduating from secondary school.

Kukpi7 (Chief) Wai reports that the past year has seen significant strides forward in numerous areas, whether that be securing funds for essential projects, providing employment opportunities or supporting neighbouring communities during crises— all of which built a strong foundation for the NIB future.

Another Free Online Seminar in Our Series “Lose the Lawn - Rewilding Your Yard”

SCAS is holding an educational seminar, “Plan Bee for Your Lawn: Tips for Supporting Plants and Pollinators”.

Wednesday March 20 at 7:00 pm – We are having a third virtual seminar in the Lose the Lawn series, “Plan Bee for Your Lawn: Tips for Supporting Plants and Pollinators”.

This session will feature Sarah Johnson, a Salmon Arm business owner working towards her PhD in ecology.

Her research is currently focused on pollinator conservation, in particular how bumble bees respond to wildfire in BC. She has over a decade of experience applying her knowledge in

pollination biology and was the founding president of the Native Bee Society of BC. We are pleased to have Sarah speak about the potential impacts of climate change on our precious native bees, what has been observed so far, and how we can assist them by providing much needed habitat in your yard.

This follows two previous Lose the Lawn sessions with gardening experts aimed at helping you rewild your yard and both are available for viewing on our website.
