Highway Project Blasting Notice
CIF Construction would like to notify the public that they will be beginning blasting operations on the south side of Highway #1 on March 7th for the Chase East project. This work will continue until approximately June 15th. Blasts are expected to take place between 1300 – 1500h daily (with the exclusion of Sundays and holidays). Traffic will be held at pre-identified locations both east- and westbound on the TransCanada as well as at the eastern exit of Shuswap, Foothills Road, the intersection of the TCH and Coburn and for westbound traffic exiting Chase off the west end of Shuswap onto the highway (see map): CIF will be holding foot and bike traffic at trailheads for the Scatchard Trail network and will complete a sweep of the restricted area prior to blasting. Please respect the devices and personnel monitoring these locations as they are there to protect you. Closures will be up to 20 minutes in
duration to ensure the safety of motoring public, Chase residents and CIF staff. To eliminate flyrock, blast debris will be controlled with the use of blast mats and strategic execution. Some noise and vibration of approximately one second per blast will be associated with the explosives used for this work. Blast signals and timing will be posted at the eastern and western blast zone boundaries as well as at trailheads for accessing the Scatchard Trails. Two minutes prior to blast, twelve short whistle signals will be sounded at one second intervals. Two minutes after the last of twelve signal blasts, the blast will take place. Following the blast, one prolonged whistle (minimum five seconds long) will signal the “all clear.” If you have questions or concerns about this upcoming work, please do not hesitate to contact CIF Construction at 250-961-6685.

Jann Arden, Tom Cochrane, Antibalas among performers confirmed
As the sun dips behind Mt. Ida and casts vibrant hues of purple and orange across Shuswap Lake, music fans from across the region flock towards the main stage. Excitement fills the Friday night air. It’s been two years since fans last celebrated together at ROOTSandBLUES. And then he hits the high note. “Life is a highway, and I wanna ride it all night long.” Back after two years of virtual performances, the Salmon Arm Folk Music Society announced Tom Cochrane and Jann Arden as two heavy hitters in the starstudded lineup for the 30th annual Salmon Arm ROOTSandBLUES Aug. 18-21.
“We’re thrilled to announce this first slate of artists scheduled to perform at the 30th-anniversary festival,” says Kevin Tobin, artistic director. “The overwhelming support we’ve received from sponsors, volunteers, and the community makes us even more excited about today’s announcement as we look forward to celebrating together once again.” Best known as the frontman of the rock band Red Rider before receiving acclaim for solo hits like No Regrets, Tom Cochrane will take the main stage Friday night after performances by Northern Cree and Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar. On Affordable Housing On the news last week both Federal and Provincial governments were talking more about their programs to create more affordable housing but bemoaning the fact that projects were often hitting roadblocks at the Municipal level. While some Municipalities are providing land and forgiveness of some charges others, like Chase, are less accepting. While the recent study done for the Village identified the need for affordable housing their actions actually discourage it. The proposed 31 unit non-profit housing coop is a case in point. When the Development Permit was issued a requirement was inserted for major off site works on Hillside Avenue which would double the land and servicing cost of the project. This was not discussed or anticipated. As proposed the continued...
project would contribute over $60000 in Development Cost Charges as well as pave and upgrade the MacPherson Street frontage and lane. These things make the economics tight but would still qualify for the CMHC affordable housing criteria. The insertion of the additional requirements means the project no longer qualifies for funding and leaves its future as affordable housing in doubt. The CMHC eligibility criteria include the requirement that there be “demonstrated Municipal support”. That has not been the case but private support has made the project possible to continue to date. It seems that The Village is more intent on working against affordable housing rather than supporting it. I hope that changes in time to save this project. Don Cavers

TODD'S COINS CASH FOR SILVER AND GOLD!
On February 24, 2022, John Froese of Chase B.C. completed his journey and went to his final destination to be with his savior whom he loved and served. John was born on April 13, 1943 in Vanderhoof BC, he was the youngest of 10 siblings born to Abe and Suzanna Froese. With a household of that size, a couple of skills that John had to learn in order to survive and thrive were to talk and care. And thrive he did! John used these skills throughout his life in the many business and sales positions in which he worked. More importantly to John though, he used those skills to encourage, build into the lives of those he came in contact with, from his fellow workers to the foster children they took in, to the employees who worked for him and even the servers at his favorite A&W. John always had a big smile, a kind word and a “dad joke” or one of his favorite “magic tricks” for his grandkids whom he adored. John is survived and greatly missed by the love of his life, wife of 56 years Leona (nee Wolfe), his children Stuart (Jeanette), Stan (Raechel), Jodi (Bill), Bonnie, Curtis. Also missed by his grandchildren: Amy, Armand John, Arynne, Joel, Emily, Allison, Hannah, Emma, Griffin, Elijah, Zachariah, Dani, and Aubray. John will also be missed by his three remaining brothers, nieces, nephews and a host of friends. A celebration of John’s life will be held on Saturday at 2:00 pm at the River of Life Church 2405 Centennial Drive, Blind Bay B.C. (Shuswap Lake Estates building).

NOVICE
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Dale Franklin Robinson on February 19, 2022 at the age of 82 with both of his children by his side. Dale was born in Peace River, Alberta on January 19, 1940. In the early years, Dale enjoyed playing guitar, singing around campfires, curling, and golf. He loved boating with family and friends in the summer, snowmobiling trips in the winter, and never passed up a good business opportunity. Reunions and gatherings with Dale’s large family were some of his favourite times. Later during his time in Chase, he continued to curl and play his guitar. He loved being outdoors and especially enjoyed commuting around Chase in his golfcart. Summer was his favorite season, he always looked forward to the company that visited and adventures that took place. He was always the first one up, helping everyone prepare for their boating or fishing day. When you arrived home, he was always at the dock to greet you with a smile and hear about your day. Grandpa loved to entertain all the children with shadow dancing, singing, campfire stories and making pancakes for all to enjoy in the morning. Dale was very social, loved being around people, and was known for always laughing and making jokes. He had a smile that lit up a room and made your day. He was very generous, caring and kind, never missing an opportunity to assist others in need. Nothing made Dale happier then spending time with his grandchildren and he especially loved meeting his first great granddaughter. They all were his pride and joy. He lived life to the fullest, even trying to waterski at the age of 80. He was adamant to get up and drop a ski, but when the event proved to be unsuccessful, he claimed the boat did not have enough power. There is not a time anyone can remember that Dale was not the life of the party. Dale is predeceased by his parents George Robinson and Alice Kyle, his foster parents Herman and Annie Hebner, sister Dorothy and brothers Ray, Earl, Rance, and Bill. He is survived by his children, Alex and Dalin, his grandchildren Tayler, Courtney, Alycia, and Abigail and his great granddaughter Emma. Left behind to mourn is his twin brother Dennis (Anne), sister Joyce, brother Randy (Patsy) and former spouse Linda. Chase, BC – Celebration of Life for Dale will be held at 546 Aylmer Road on July 2, 2022. Peace River, AB - Celebration of Life for Dale will be held at Leddy Lake on July 30 & 31, 2022.

THE HEAT – KIJHL PLAYOFFS UPDATE submitted by Scott Koch
First Round best of 7 series between the Doug Birks Division Kamloops Storm (2nd) and Chase Heat (3rd) commenced February 22nd and by the March 1st 6 games were done, and the 7th and deciding game to be played in Kamloops Wednesday March 2nd. So, a brief recap on those contests.
itself on a 5 on 3 shorthanded situation in the 3rd when Aiden Brown comes streaking out of the penalty box on a Storm line change and outduels the Loops goaltender to score a brilliant counter. Unfortunately, not enough on this penalty pockmarked contest as Kamloops takes a 3-1 series lead.
Game 1, in Kamloops, Tuesday the 22nd and Brayden Haskell starts the goal scoring on a 2 on 1 with Jacob Biensch who got an assist. Storm gets that one back and then Bryan Fraser on an uncharacteristic beauty breakaway with help from Mikkel Hrechka and Dylan Handel pops in the 2-1 goal after 20 minutes. In the 2nd Kamloops gets a pair to take the lead 3-2. The 3rd is all Chase, Biensch from just inside the blue line scoring unassisted to tie things up. Trevor Kennedy with a seeing eye lazer from the hashmarks aided by Hrechka and Matthew Poole scores the winning 4-3 goal. Jack Osmond stops 31 of 34 Kamloops shots between the pipes.
Game 5 returns to Kamloops and Chase is in a do or die situation. The cream tends to rise to the top even during mayhem filled milk carton shakeups. No scoring in the 1st the Heat fend off a couple of minor transgressions to a supposed none to their foes. In the 2nd the Heat explode with 3 tallies in what has been a relatively low scoring series. Brown from Corson Nordick and Tyson Mallet scores a well earned effort by all three. Sigouin from a shot from the corner aided by Ben Schmidt and Handel and then Kennedy on the powerplay helped by Sigouin and Biensch makes it 3-0. 1 minor infraction to the Loops lads is called. In the 3rd it is a horse of a different colour with Kamloops scoring twice on the man advantage to make it close. Lots of touch and go action with a tremendous amount of contempt displayed sets the 2 teams up for Game 6 in Chase. Oh, the Chase victory from the comeback kids has the series now at 3-2 which was also the final score of Game 5. Osmond faced a 51 shot barrage and only allowed 2 markers for the win.
Game 2 again in Kamloops Wednesday the 23rd and the Storm wakeup. Only goal in 1st goes to Kamloops. In the 2nd the Storm score twice before Handel on the man advantage from Biensch and Jarod Sigouin get the Heat going. Storm score again after 40 it’s 4-1. In the 3rd the Storm increase their lead, and Sigouin from Haskell shorthanded scores with the final being 5-2 Loops. With a one day break in action, Game 3 moves to Chase on Friday the 25th. No scoring in the first 20, in the 2nd Haskell unassisted gets things started. Kamloops equals that and after 40 it’s 1-1. In the 3rd Kamloops gets two prior to Biensch from Kennedy getting to within 1. The game ends 3-2 with a Kamloops win. Osmond repels 32 of 35 Storm shots. Game 4 in Chase on Saturday the 26th plays out in the Chaos Castle and while the scoring was light the mayhem was not. The two teams clearly have a dislike of each other that tends to happen in the playoffs. Kamloops scores once in the 1st period and once in the 2nd for a 2-0 lead. Chase finds
It’s Game 6, Tuesday March 1st, with a win required by the Heat to continue on in the series. The anticipated mayhem didn’t occur to the degree expected in this one before a packed house at our Chaos Castle. No scoring in the 1st and one minor penalty that went to Kamloops. Smack dab in the middle of the 2nd Garrett Martin deposits the puck in the opposition net, ably assisted by Jarod Sigouin. The Storm receive the only minor infraction of this frame. Early in the 3rd Chase receives their only minor penalty of the game and the penalty killers deny the efforts of the Storm. It’s a serious nail biter as the hopes rest on a 1-0 lead. What happens next has the dust bunnies
in the rafters jumping as well as the Chase fans in the stands as Justin Vinterlik jams in the winning goal from Malachi Franklin and Sigouin. Adding a little icing to the cake Captain Biensch assisted by Assistant Captain Haskell gets an empty net bonus goal, it ends 3-0 Chase. The “Mesh Master” Jack Osmond starring in this contest while earning a well deserved shutout. With the series tied at 3 games apiece, Wednesday night March 2nd Game 7 in Kamloops will decide which team advances to face the Revelstoke Grizzlies (1st) in the Division Championship series. Just maybe a new version of the “Cardiac Kids” has been created through all the adversity faced so far in this series…lets hope so as it means more fabulous and thrilling hockey action for our ardent fans.
