hase Fire & Rescue do things right— and their annual feast of a favourite Maritime specialty was no exception recently. Feeding nearly 300 hungry folk is no small feat. As usual, the lobsters, salads and desserts were delicious. Topping off the evening of food, friends and fun were the talented and rockin’ musicians of “Shattered Blue.” Dancing definitely happened. And hey, the dedicated gals and guys of the Chase fire brigade and LOBSTER IS SERVED! their volunteers are already planning next year’s Photo by Dave Lepsoe extravaganza. Stay tuned, funseekers!

CHASE YOUTH ACTION COMMITTEE (YAC) submitted by Terri Mindel
The Chase Youth Action Committee will now have a bi monthly article in the Chase Sunflower. The goal is to keep Chase informed about YAC and to recruit new members, specifically youth to the committee. UPDATE FROM THE LAST FEW MONTHS: The Youth Action Committee (YAC) has amalgamated with the Chase and District Skatepark Society to have all youth focused services and programs connected. They also are getting mentoring and leadership support from the Chase Rotary, which has a comprehensive International Youth Interact Program as best practises. The Youth Action Committee has developed a new Terms of Reference, which has the committee acting as an advisory committee to Chase Council and the Village of Chase. This will be approved by Council in July. Councillor Ali Maki will be sitting as a liaison to Council but the chairperson will be an elected position from the general membership. The Youth Action Committee now has youth representation sitting on the committee from the High School Leadership Class and will be working closely with the three local First Nation communities to have regular community representation, specifically youth.
Currently there is an art project taking place with two Indigenous artists and Chase Youth to paint the Skatepark. More features are still planned for the Skatepark, we are just waiting on an available carpenter for the construction. Kamloops YMCA will be bringing a youth mental health program called Mind Fit to the community for the summer. This program is open to youth ages 13-19 years of age and is being funded by the YMCA, YAC and the Village of Chase. Mind Fit is for youth experiencing mental health challenges and it will also incorporate physical activity. The Coordinator Jenna Nickle will be going to the High School and the bands to promote this free program in the next few weeks. YAC is also exploring having a paid part time youth worker to plan recreation activities for youth 13-19 years of age during the summer, specifically at the Skatepark. Nothing is confirmed to date. The next YAC meeting is set for Monday, June 25th at 5:00 pm at the Chase Council Chambers and we would like to have more community involvement Working with youth for the youth! E V E R Y T H I N G SHUSWAP COMES TO THE SOUTH SHUSWAP submitted by Curt Copeland.
Author Jim Cooperman to speak about his popular book Now in its second printing, Everything Shuswap will be the topic for PowerPoint presentation on June 21st at 7pm at the Cedar Heights Community Centre in Blind Bay. Jim Cooperman, a dedicated environmentalist and back-to-thelander, spent 12 years researching and writing this comprehensive, bioregional guidebook that includes 36 maps and over 350 stunning photos. Thanks to author Jim Cooperman gifting the proceeds to Okanagan Shuswap School District #83, the first printing raised $24,5000 for outdoor learning. Everything Shuswap has received rave reviews in various publications. The Vancouver Sun described the book as “a compelling portrait of land, waters, wildlife and human history.” Author and former Globe and Mail columnist Mark Hume pointed out how “Everything Shuswap should be mandatory reading for anyone who lives in or visits the Shuswap.” University of Victoria professor Michael M’Gonigle wrote in his BC Studies review, “...not just a thoughtful, well-researched study of a region, but an on-going contribution to it.” The presentation, sponsored by the South Shuswap Historical Society, will provide an inside look into the story behind the book, explain how the publication benefits the community and provide some local history insights. Copies of the book can be purchased at local stores and will be available at the free event.

Dear Citizens of Chase, The Chase RCMP Detachment wants to express their appreciation for your generosity in support of the “Cram the Cruiser” Food Drive of June 13th, 2018. Over 400 lbs of food and $300.00 money donation were received. The food and money you donate will make a positive difference in Chase and will help reduce food hunger for families in crisis. Your generosity means so much to us but even more to the Chase Hamper Society. Thank you from all of us. Sincerely, Chase RCMP Detachment Re: Chase splash pad On behalf of parents and grandparents of Chase, I would like to extend showers and buckets of thanks to the Chase Lions for their tireless effort in fundraising and producing an amazing asset to our community! They have endured dust, rain, hard work, and some criticism. The end result is a beautiful water park funded entirely by these volunteers. Our grandkids can hardly wait for opening day. Thank you so much. Sincerely, Kenn and Cathy Moore Garbage in the Water I was fishing at Cinnimousen Narrows on Shuswap Lake last Saturday on shore ( pit stop ) when a houseboat going too fast comes through but what made me mad was the guy was kicking his cans an trash into the water! I wish I could have gotten video and the name of the houseboat. Who needs people like that on our waters? I’ve posted about this in a local facebook group and in the responses people reported that they too had seen this behaviour and the garbage washed up on beaches. Charles McKenzie

Page 11 • June 22nd, 2018 • Chase Sunflower Obituary Helen Ryde (Komar) 1940 – 2018
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Helen Ryde on June 13, 2018, formerly of Chase, B.C. She leaves behind her loving husband Robert (Bob) Ryde, daughters, Kim (Jack) Neufeld, Lee (Jerry) Neufeld, Wendy (Jeff) Lewis, 2 granddaughters, Katie and Sylvia, 2 grandsons, Jesse and Adam (Kelly) as well as 6 great grandchildren, Charlotte, Sydney, Sianna, Brooklynn, Cooper and Greyson, and sister; Anne Wheatley of Ontario. Predeceased by parents, Helena (1978) and Daniel (1987), daughter Susan (2016) (Vince) D’Agostino and brothers Dan (2017) (Darlene) Komar & William (1938). Helen was born March 13, 1940 in Natal-Michele, a small community outside of Fernie BC. Later her family relocated to Creston BC. where Helen grew up with her younger brother and older sister on the family’s fruit and berry farm. In the 1950’s, she met Bob Ryde, originally from Cranbrook BC. and they married November 09, 1957. Helen was a stay at home mom raising 4 daughters until the girls started school. They lived for a short time in Victoria BC. and moved back to Creston, then Raymond, AB, and Fort Langley, before finally settling in Aldergrove, BC. in 1975 where Helen worked for the city of Langley. With a talent for gardening, she worked making Langley beautiful. Her favourite part of the job was taking care of a small park, Sendall Gardens, which was often used for wedding photographs and picnics. Once she and Bob retired they purchased a house on Deka Lake and spent several wonderful years there. She often caught the biggest fish of the day, and enjoyed being on the water. Helen had a great talent for cooking and shared her secrets and recipes with all who asked. She was known for her apple buns and kulbasa, which she and Bob made together. Helen was able to take any leftover and make it taste like a gourmet meal. She made delicious soup from a pile of bones. No one ever left the Ryde house hungry, she made sure of that. Helen’s talents were not only gardening and cooking, she did beautiful embroidery. She could make an embroidered rose on a piece fabric look as real as if it was just picked from the garden. She learned from her parents how to turn unusable clothing and rags into beautiful woven rag rugs, which she and Bob worked on together—the original recyclers. We will miss her smile, quick wit and charm. She will remain in our hearts forever. The family would like to thank the professionals at RIH for their care of Helen. A Celebration of Life will take place 3:00 pm on Sunday July 29, 2018 at St. Andrews on the Square. In lieu of flowers, donations in Helen’s memory can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Arrangements entrusted to Alternatives Funeral & Cremation Services 250-554-2324. Condolences may be expressed to the family from www.myalternatives.ca
Obituary Pearl Evelyn Thompson
Pearl was born on October 20, 1928 and passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 12, 2018 at the age of 89 years. Pearl was predeceased by her husband (Bradley), parents (Stan and Minnie) and brothers (Frank and Doug). She leaves to mourn her passing her children: Kathleen (Darrell), Alexis (Bram) and Ian as well as her 2 grandsons Nick and Jake (Dominique) and her furbabies, Rusty, Baby and Luna. As a young girl, Pearl’s dream was to be a teacher, but she was forced to quit school to look after her ailing mother in grade 9. When her children were younger, Pearl fulfilled her childhood dream by teaching / mentoring many children through teaching Sunday School as well as being a Brownie and Girl Guide leader and Commissioner. Through the years, we have heard how Mom impacted the young ladies she worked with. Brown Owl will never be forgotten. If anyone needed a hand, you had to look no further than Pearl. Mom was always looking at ways to help people. She was very active in the Women’s Institute over the years…her Fiesta Beans were always requested at catered events the WI were involved in. She ran the thrift shop for many years and lots of laughter could be heard from the kitchen as she and Dora sorted clothing. Mom was also involved in the Legion and the Fall Fair. When Mom was named the “Citizen of the Year” she was so proud! Such a highlight for her to be recognized for the many, many volunteer hours she put in to make her community a better place. Back in the day, Mom was an avid Bingo player; when she wasn’t running the WI one, she was making treks to other games. In her later years, she discovered her love of darts. She travelled to many seniors games winning gold medals. She was so proud of her medals. As her health deteriorated and Mom became more of a shut in, her social outlet became the wonderful care aides from High Country who came to help her throughout the day. She so looked forward to their daily visits; she would give them “her attitude” and loved to get it back. Mom moved to Ponderosa Care Facility in December 2017. As dementia took its nasty grip on her life, the “fun” Pearl slowly faded but the care aides all loved her. They had tears in their eyes as Mom’s time here on earth neared its end. Our family cannot thank the amazing caregivers from High Country and Ponderosa enough for their kind and loving care. A Memorial tea will be held on Saturday, June 30th from 1:00 – 3:00pm in the basement of the Royal Canadian Legion in Chase. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you please make a donation in Mom’s name to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.Condolences may be expressed at: www.schoeningfuneralservice.com
Obituary Persida Puharich Persida was born July 9, 1928 and passed away peacefully on June 19, 2018. Persida (nee: Danilovic), born in a small village in Yugoslavia, she had two brothers, Peter and Branco and a sister, Miriam. Life was not easy growing up in Yugoslavia and her family had to endure being exiled from Croatia at the onset of WWII. After the war her family returned to their farm where, as a teen, she met and married Marko. With dreams of a better life and nothing other than the clothes on their backs they fled Yugoslavia in the dark of the night and ran on foot over the Slovenian Alps to Austria. It was at the refugee camp in Salzburg where their oldest son, George was born. They were put on a boat headed for Canada and settled in Hamilton, Ontario where there other two sons, Dushan and Stevan, were born. Eager for adventure, Marko and Persida travelled across Canada to BC and chose Chase to retire to. For many years they maintained a house in Ontario, one in Florida and one in Chase, driving between the three every year. Persida was extremely talented at any hand work she attempted including pine needle basket weaving, crocheting, shell work, and various needle crafts to name a few. She enjoyed working in her gardens where she grew wonderful flowers. She attended church whenever possible and met many friends along the way. Persida loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren with all her heart. She looked forward to visits from them whenever they could. She cherished time with children the most. Persida was predeceased by her husband Marko, grandson Dallas, her parents and brothers and sister. She is survived by their three sons, George (Wendy) of Chase, Dushan (Val) of Victoria, and Stevan (Lisa) of Kamloops. Grandchildren; Ani, Krystyna, Marcus, Erik, Boris, and Mila. Great grandchildren: Khoen, Diondre, Sawyer, Kane and Eli. Graveside service will be held on June 22, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Hillside Cemetery, Kamloops, BC. In lieu of flowers donations to the Kamloops Hospice Association would be greatly appreciated.

THE CHASE HEAT JUNIOR HOCKEY SOCIETY NEEDS YOUR HELP!!
BILLET HOMES NEEDED We need Billet Homes for the 2018/2019 hockey season!! Season is September until end of February/March We need you to open your home! Please help us keep THE HEAT in Chase.
Each billet home receives $600.00 per month / per player and one general admission pass. The Chase Heat will be arriving in town in August to start their 2018-2019 hockey season. Once the team has been selected the out of town players will need a place to live for the hockey season (September 2018-March 2019). The boys come from all areas of British Columbia and beyond and vary from 16 to 20 years in age. Some boys are still in school (these players attend Chase Secondary during their stay in Chase) and some have already graduated. What they all have in common is their love for the sport and their desire to provide Chase with many hours of exciting hockey. Being a billet family is a rewarding experience and adds a whole new dimension to the otherwise dreary Chase winter. It is important that you are able to welcome these boy/boys into your home and provide him/them with healthy meals and a safe environment. This ’home away from home’ is important to enable the boys to be successful on the ice and in everyday life. Providing a smoke free living area is essential. If this opportunity sounds intriguing and you would like more information please Contact Lana Adamson 250-574-3681
