Moonlight Movie Tour Coming to Chase Press Release

he highly anticipated event of the summer is back for another year. Interior Savings and Chase Minor Hockey are excited to announce the Moonlight Movie Tour will be landing in Chase on Aug 19 and you’re invited!

A screening of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World will be shown on a giant inflatable screen beginning at sundown, and that’s not all! Prior to show time, there will be family-friendly activities and a concession stand that will quench your thirst and satisfy your sweet tooth. While there is no charge to attend the event, a donation of $3 per person or $10 per family is suggested. The band, Hanne Kah, and their charismatic female front singer Hanne are onto something big. Working on their new album the band wants to establish the genre folk as a steady part of Germany’s musical landscape.

In late summer of 2018 the band released the first album single COME ON, which hits the musical and lyrical spirit of the time. The song discusses a curiosity about life and motivation to make the best of it, as well as a certainty in values and respect for the challenges it can bring along.

It is a flagship for the Generation Y lifestyle, the limitless way of thinking while still keeping both feet on the ground. The authenticity of COME ON lies in the fact that the band itself will now try to take a leap into international realms and meet their long set goal.

On February 15, the band released the second single of their new record called “GRETA“ which is a homage to Greta Thunberg a 16 Year old climate activist from Sweden who kicked off a whole movement around Europe called “Fridays For Future“, where thousands of people go on the streets to protest for a better environment.

The course is already set for a promising future: in 2016 Hanne Kah and producer Marc Jullien released their first album ‘Hand full of secrets’ and landed directly on the VIAs (VUT Indie awards) longlist.

Right before that, the single CARDS was released and played supporting Nena’s (99 red balloons) concert in Mainz and presented in various TV Shows.

Since then, the band played about 200 shows as well as a Canada-tour in 2017, where they were invited to play at the Vancouver Island Folk Festival and renowned clubs such as Guilt & Company Vancouver and Needle Vinyl Tavern Edmonton.

At the end of the same year Hanne Kah was next to Hollywood composer James Newton Howard at his Europe tour finale, on stage at the Jahrhunderthalle Frankfurt where they were performing ‘The hanging tree’ from the film series ‘The Hunger Games’ accompanied by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra.

The path is clear, Hanne and her band managed to make a name for themselves and are excited to be back in Canada this summer!

A PASTORAL PERSPECTIVE: A mid summer confession

So I have a confession to make. (Our tradition doesn’t have formal times of confession, there is no confessional as there is in other Christian traditions).

But I feel it is important that I share a confession at this time, not so that I can be forgiven, but so that we can all grow in something that we need.

As I sit down to write this article in the middle of July, looking out my window all I see is rain falling from the sky, it seems like this summer has only really tempted us with the hot weather our region is known for, and the rest of the time it has been cold and wet.

And this has been made worse because I like the heat. After spending too many years in the Lower Mainland I Love being outside on those hot summer days when the air around you feels as if it is the same temperature as your morning coffee. I know, not everyone shares this pleasure, but that is my preference.

And because so many days this summer have felt more like an abandoned cup of hours old coffee than something straight out of the pot, I have complained.

More than once I have looked at the weather forecast and grumbled.

Now I don’t think there is anything wrong with having a preference

when it comes to something like weather, but complaining so often is forgetting about context.

I complain about the weather but I forget that when I walk outside— rain or shine — there is fresh air to breath.

We complain about taxes but turn on the tap and suddenly have fresh, clean drinking water at our disposal, any time of the day, no carrying or carting required. We complain about our health, but our life expectancy is higher than it ever has been and we have access to care options that even a generation or two wouldn’t have been able to dream of.

These are just a few of the blessings that we experience on a daily basis.

Blessings we so easily over look, I don’t seem to notice the green grass when I am focused on the raindrops.

There are certainly things that are not good in our lives and in our world.

The rain has ruined a picnic or two, I am sure that other problems have had more serious outcomes in all of our lives. Our lives are far from perfect (and we can talk about why). But there is so much to be thankful for.

There is a historic song we sometimes close our Sunday morning gatherings with that begins with the words “Praise God from whom all blessings flow”. Sometimes I don’t praise, sometimes I am not thankful.

But that doesn’t mean the blessings aren’t there.

So rain or shine, steaming or tepid, sunny or soaked. I am choosing give thanks instead of gripe.

Alice (Fraser) MacDougall Loves Life in Chase

Jane and Will Fraser moved to Chase from Brennan Creek in 1927. Among their seven children was three year old Alice, who with family and friends, celebrated her 95th birthday on July 13— and part of the celebration was that she’s still living in Chase in a house that once belonged to her dear parents, and with her youngest sister, Aileen, as her next door neighbour in a home their father built.

With regard to their move to Chase, Alice reports that “Mom taught the older children to read and write, but education was important to her, and she wanted her children in school.”

“My mother was kept home from school at about age six to help care for a newborn sibling.

She always wanted to go back, which she did at age 29 as a teacher’s aide because education was there. It meant everything to her to be at school.”

And Jane’s urge to learn, that drive to know, would eventually be passed on to her daughter, Alice, who in turn imparted it to her children and grandchildren.

Growing up in Chase meant that the Frasers knew many of the founding families in the village—the Buysses, Penttilas, Haldanes and of course, some of the Chase family.

Alice reports that, in addition to picnics, some of the main social events back then were the dances held at the Knights of Pythias Hall which was located where today’s credit union building stands at Shuswap and Chase Streets. “Mom and Dad were fairly strict,” she states. “I didn’t go to a dance until I was about 17.”

Hard work was a big part of life for men and women back then, with the main local industries being forestry, farming and the railroad, along with the heavyduty chores needed to raise a family.

When asked about significant events of the 20th century in Chase, Alice immediately replies, “The flood of 1935!

Chase Creek had been dammed to produce power for the mill in the early 1900’s. And the dam failed. Water just poured into town, especially swamping the low-lying areas. Fortunately, our home wasn’t impacted though.”

She adds that World War II definitely had an impact on the village, taking their young men away to battle. “53 went to war. Two were lost—my brother, Joe, and Howard Chase.”

“I had planned to go into nursing,” Alice recalls, “but when the male teacher at Monte Creek joined the Armed Forces in the early 1940’s, I was offered the job at the school when I was in my late teens. even though I hadn’t yet attended Normal School.”

‘Normal School’ was the term derived from the 1790’s École Normale Supérieure, in France, designed to develop and implement teaching methods to be used in all schools within the government’s jurisdiction. The first Canadian Normal School established to teach elementary teachers was opened in 1847 in Ontario.

“I attended Normal School in Victoria, where my sister, Anne, lived,” Alice says.

“And I taught for one year at Surrey and then in Darfield, between Kamloops and Little Fort, because I wanted to be closer to home and family. The train was slow but it got me there.”

It was especially important to Alice that she be able to be with family regularly at that time, as her beloved twin brother, Joe, who had joined the Air Force, had died at age 19 in Prince Rupert when munitions he was loading exploded, taking his life and that of another young man, as well as injuring two others. It was a dark time for the Fraser family.

The Darfield move would prove to be a good one for Alice in another way, for it was there she would meet Alan MacDougall, her husband of 65 years.

Alice and Alan were married in 1947 at Fulford Harbour on Saltspring Island.

She was 23.

Alan worked in forestry which in due course took them to Brennan Creek where Alice had been born. As the number of families increased there, a one-room school was built and opened in 1958 with Alice as its first teacher.

“I had three of my own children in the school,” she reports with a smile, “as well as three cousins, and three others.

So I was called Mom, Auntie and Mrs. MacDougall, all in the same classroom.”

As a side note, the Brennan Creek School was the last one-room schoolhouse to operate in the Shuswap area, closing in 2012.

Alice and Alan would have nine children—Nan, Charlie, Rob, Tim, Lib, Mary, Joe, Pauline, and baby William who succumbed to a heart condition at one month of age. And eventually the family moved back to Chase.

“I wanted the children to live where I’d grown up, to attend school here,” says Alice. “I loved that school. When I look at that building, I think of all the good times and of all the years I spent there.

I originally attended a four-room school on that property.”

Alice would eventually teach at the now closed Chase Primary School for 20 years—the calling of pedagogy having never left her.

“I think it would be great to have an Outdoor Education School there.

Children learn in different ways and having options would be a good thing.”

“The thing I enjoyed most about teaching was the look on a child’s face when they had grasped a concept or idea or had done something worthwhile. That was wonderful!”

Alice’s love of learning led her to continue studying toward a degree while she was teaching. After their school day, she and a colleague would drive to Kamloops to take courses through Open Learning, the first iteration of distance

education—with ‘distance’ definitely being the operative word in their case.

This enthusiastic educator and learner earned a Bachelor of Education degree when she was 79 years of age in 2003.

Alice also tackled computer skills following her retirement at age 60 and continued taking courses 'til just a couple of years ago.

As well, she volunteered with the One to One reading programme at Haldane Elementary School until recently. Once a teacher, always a teacher.

Recalling the past in Chase, Alice says that the incorporation of the Village in 1969 was a key experience. “We had our own local government then and people seemed to take more interest in the town, paid more attention to what was happening. Our taxes were going to a local jurisdiction.”

And a fun happening was the Chase Fall Fair held at the community hall on Labour Day each year. “I used to keep my students’ art work and crafts to put them on display in the hall. There were competitions in baking, sewing, quilting and produce. It was a big event, after which the children returned to school. A great way to end the summer.”

“Everyone also enjoyed Chase’s drive-in theatre run by the Beatty brothers. Alan and I would load up the van—the kids could fall asleep in the back while we enjoyed the movie.”

Alice says that the best thing about having lived in Chase is that it is where she grew up. “It’s where my roots were put down. It’s home. The friendships, the lake, the sense of community, all important.”

And the word that perhaps best describes Alice MacDougall is dedicated— dedication to her faith, to her family, to lifelong learning and to her career as an educator. She did it all and did it very well!

Alice is the loving grandmother to 20 grandchildren and (soon) 21 great grandchildren when a baby arrives in August.

Louise Hutchinson October 19, 1934 - July 13, 2019

It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma, Aunt and dear Friend.

Louise will now be taking her journey to the other side to finally be with the rest of her family who she missed so much!

Her parents, Herber and Ethel Clement, her brother Lloyd, her husband John, her father of her children Mickey. Her children, Denita (Ron), Tami and Danny. Her Grandson Kevin and many others.

The Youth Action Committee's Summer Youth Program has been going since July with weekly with free, drop-in activities for teenagers. So far the program has been great!

Come out for some fun summer activities! You can find the program pamphlets and all the information on the YAC

facebook page or at our local businesses.

We have many more events coming up for youth between the ages of 12-18. I will post the location two days prior to the event that is taking place.

Sour Cherry Pie 4 cups pitted sour cherries, with their juice 4 tablespoons sugar ½ cup all-purpose flour ¼ cup whole-wheat flour ⅓ cup light brown sugar ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon 6 tbsp cold unsalted butter ¼ cup chopped walnuts ¼ cup rolled oats Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine the cherries and the sugar and let stand

In a medium-size bowl, combine the all-purpose and whole-wheat flours, sugar, salt and cinnamon. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Add the walnuts and oats and toss lightly to combine. Cover the cherries with the topping and bake until the topping is crisp and the juices are bubbling, about 40 minutes.

Place on a rack to cool slightly before servings.
