The New Pesticide Bylaw in Chase submitted by Chase Environmental Action Group

On behalf of the Chase Environmental Group (CEAG) and all concerned citizens of Chase, we would like to thank Brian Lauzon, Joni Heinrich, Michelle Tsutsumi, and Cindy Kennedy for the newly established Pesticide Bylaw and its support from the Mayor and council. This bylaw represents almost a year’s worth of hard work since Brian Lauzon initiated the proposal and the CEAG further reiterated the urgency.

It was collectively our hope to protect and enhance the environment and pollinators in our community. The work included many meetings, a public survey, and consultation with Integrated Pest Management and other government agencies.

The importance of protecting biodiversity and ecosystems cannot be stressed enough, but still so many of us take it for granted. Some may wonder how something as small as a bee can play such an important role in our survival, but we are all connected-pollinators, animals, water, land, air, and us- all sharing the same space. Pesticides don’t dissipate with the eradication of what we call a pest. What affects one species has a ripple effect on all those connected to it. Choosing to disregard these things has already revealed the impact on our food supply and health.

The CEAG has taken on the role of assisting the public in choosing alternatives to pesticides. Our hope is that we can live happily with less perfection, thereby preserving the natural environment on both private and public land. This involves seeking remedies made of natural ingredients, rather than our past methods of quick

convenience. Often we seek out a bottle of toxic “Round-up” to eradicate unwanted weeds, with little regard for the soil, ground water, and our health.

We also need to find out what the bugs are really doing in our gardens, and understand that they may be our allies, act as pollinators, or keep our soil healthy.

If we have rodents, we should take time to determine what is attracting them and rid our yards of that first.

In the coming months, we will provide articles and alternatives to pesticides on the Village website and the Chase Sunflower.

We will promote pesticide-free displays at the Library and Farmers’ Market.

We encourage you to purchase “ Pe s t i c i d e - F r e e” signs, created by one of our members, and available at two local businesses, “The Willows Natural Foods” and “Amongst the Weeds. So go ahead, brag about leaving those dandelions and other weeds in your yard! To further promote biodiversity, we hope to assist with the creation of the first “Dandelion Festival” in the spring of 2022. This project will further enhance making peace with weeds and learning about their beneficial uses, while creating an entertaining experience for the entire family.

Every resident should take responsibility for good stewardship in our yards and around our community. This Pesticide bylaw is a small, but important step, in the fight for a healthier environment for our children, our citizens, and will allow us to live in harmony with the world around us.

RCMP REPORT submitted by Chase RCMP July 1-17th, 2021

SUSPICIOUS VEHICLE: On July 1st, 2021 at noon, Chase RCMP received a suspicious vehicle report in the Lee Creek area. The complainant advised that an old pickup truck tried to pull him over on Squilax Anglemont Road. The vehicle was passing on double solid lines and had flashing lights on the dash. The complainant stated that he did not stop for the vehicle. Police located the vehicle, which was being operated by the local fire chief. The fire chief was responding to an emergency—a brush fire thought to be threatening nearby homes. This was permitted under the Motor Vehicle Act and was not suspicious.

HECKLER On July 3rd, 2021 at 8:50 pm, during routine patrols, Chase members stopped a red Dodge truck with 4 passengers in the cargo bed. In speaking with the driver, Police noted an odour of alcohol on her breath. Samples of her breath were obtained roadside, which resulted in a three-day suspension of her driver’s license under the Motor Vehicle Act. The driver and passengers were cooperative with Police and the interaction was routine and pleasant. Comic relief was provided by an intoxicated local, who heckled the driver, her passengers and Police, from his back deck throughout the entirety of the traffic stop.

TWO VEHICLE COLLISION On July 9th, 2021 at 6:24 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Coburn Street and the Trans-Canada Highway. Based on witness statements and evidence at the scene, police determined that a red Dodge pickup entered the intersection from Coburn Street, directly in front of an eastbound semi hauling a 53’ trailer. The semi driver slammed on his brakes; however, he was unable to avoid the collision. Fortunately, the semi struck the pickup on the passenger side, near the cargo bed rather than the cab directly. The three passengers of the pickup were transported to hospital by ambulance with injuries ranging from minor to serious.

The matter is still under investigation.

NOT A COLLISION On July 5th, 2021 at 3:06 am, Chase RCMP were advised of a single vehicle collision on Squilax Anglemont Road in Lee Creek.

The complainant reported that there was a car half in the ditch and half blocking the eastbound lane. The complainant did not stop to check on the occupants and had no further information to provide. Police, BC Ambulance Services and the Lee Creek Fire Department were all dispatched to the collision. It turned out that the vehicle was simply high-centered on the edge of a steep driveway. The driver left the vehicle, thereby creating a traffic hazard. Police arranged to have the vehicle towed.

ROAD RAGE On July 13th, 2021 at 6:30 pm, Chase RCMP were dispatched to a report of ‘shots fired’. The complainant—a truck driver— reported that he believed the window of his semi-truck was shot out during a road rage type of incident. He explained that as he approached end of the divided highway, a vehicle was catching up behind him in the passing lane. He merged early, forcing the other vehicle to brake but ultimately preventing a possibly collision in the merge lane. At the next possible opportunity, the vehicle in question—a white van—passed him. Just as the van pulled up along-side, the truck driver’s side window shattered spraying glass all over him. He caught up to the van almost immediately as both vehicles were stopped in the Chase construction zone and he read the license plate to the 911 operator.

Based on the information obtained from the license plate, Police located and arrested the driver, a 30 year old male from Chase and the passenger, a 37 year old male from Salmon Arm.

FAUX FIRES On July 7th, 2021 at 9:51 pm Chase RCMP received an anonymous report that there were multiple campers with campfires at the Adams Lake Provincial Park. Police

ERRATIC DRIVER On July 17th, 2021, at approximately 1:30 am, Chase RCMP were advised of a possible impaired driver on the Trans-Canada Highway, travelling eastbound.

RCMP REPORT, continued from previous page The complainant reported a black Dodge SUV driving erratically. Police were unable to locate the vehicle. At 2:24 am, Chase RCMP received a second complaint regarding the same vehicle, this time travelling westbound. The complainant reported that the SUV was travelling well under the speed limit and crossing the centre line.

Police located the vehicle parked in the ditch, with the front of the vehicle nearly hanging off a cliff.

The driver advised that she was headed to Alberta but stopped for a rest before continuing on.

She had no idea she was going in the wrong direction. As the conversation continued, Police suspected she may be suffering from a medical issue. Ambulance attended and transported the female to hospital for further assessment.

STOLEN TRUCK On July 17th,

2021

at

approximately 8:00 am, Chase RCMP were alerted to a stolen vehicle that was thought to be in the Chase area. The Ford F350 was stolen from Kamloops during the night. Police located the vehicle near Ska Cheen Drive and attempted to stop it. It fled from Police, travelling eastbound on Kamloops Shuswap Road at a high rate of speed. Chase RCMP co-ordinated with Tk’emlups RCMP and Police Dog Services to reacquire the vehicle in the Pritchard area. The vehicle fled a second time but sustained extensive damage and was disabled in the process. The driver then fled on foot. Police Service Dog ‘Fargo’ and his handler tracked the male through the forest for several kilometres before he was located and taken into custody without further incident. The 31 year old male from Kamloops will be facing multiple charges with regards to this matter.

August 7th s o we will be holding an online 50/50 and perhaps Sunday August draw starting August 1st. COMMUNITY and we are out and volunteer during this hoping the public will support weekend. Volunteers are asked our club through buying some 50/50 to bring landscaping tools such as rakes, tickets. Tickets will be easily available weed eaters, shovels, gloves, etc. with for the public to get as they will be able them when they come. The work bee to buy the tickets at home or on their starts at 9 am. There will be a light lunch phones. Your 50/50 numbers will be provided for volunteers. We are really delivered to you by email and you can use hoping to see many volunteers because credit or debit cards. You do not have to many hands make light work! contact a CDFGC member! It can all be

done at home. CDFGC was unable to do any fundraising in 2020. We were unable to hold our annual banquet or our annual 3-D shoot so we are really hoping the public will support us in this fundraising venture and that our members will spread the word.

Lastly, we are pleased to announce that instead of a 3-D shoot this year the CDFGC wants to do something different and invite the CDFGC community to a FAMILY AND FRIENDS ARCHERY FUN DAY! On Sunday, September 5th from 10 am to 2 pm we plan to set up novelty targets, some 3-D targets and some static targets for archers to shoot at. Continued on next page....

There will be some prizes for the youngsters at the novelty targets and we are hoping to introduce to anyone who is interested how much fun it can be shooting at 3-D targets.

There will be a concession. All our members will be invited to bring out their bows and family and friends to have some fun shooting at novelty targets, some 3-D targets and some static targets. A concession will be available to buy some drinks, chips, hot dogs etc.

There are some junior compound bows and arrows available in the club house for youngsters to borrow if your family has no archery equipment. Parents are required to attend with their children.

Write this date on your calendar as you may be able to borrow some equipment if you know someone who can lend you some. Unfortunately, we do not have any archery equipment for adults, but we are always open to donations!

IMPORTANT NOTICE! At this time the Range is closed to members because the fire hazard is too high and the range is close to our landlord’s house and property and he has requested it be closed. We are requesting our members be respectful of this request. There has been a padlock put on the gate that your key will not open.

When the extreme fire hazard decreases the range will be reopened and we will let members know it is open right away.

If you are interested in fishing, archery, trap and skeet, environmental projects and upkeep, or hunting and shooting skills you may want to join our club and new members are always welcome.

Funding for Chase Hall Roof Replacement Chase has been awarded $250,000 through our federal and provincial partners in infrastructure. The federal funding is through the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan that supports 27 infrastructure projects in the OkanaganKootenay Region including Chase. The Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia are investing over $24.5 million in these projects through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure

Program’s new COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream. Canada is contributing over $20.8 million (80%), while B.C. is contributing almost $3.7 million (20%).

This is welcome news for the aging roof at our Community Hall. Upgrades to the community hall structure include roof replacement and reconstruction of walkways and deck. The tendering process is expected to commence immediately.

Lay burgers on an oiled barbecue grill over a solid bed of hot coals or high heat on a gas grill (you can hold your hand at grill level only 2 to 3 seconds); close lid on gas grill. Cook burgers, turning once, until browned on both sides and no longer pink inside (cut to test), 7 to 8 minutes total.

Remove from grill.

Lay buns, cut side down, on grill and cook until lightly toasted, 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Spread mayonnaise and ketchup on bun bottoms. Add lettuce, tomato, burger, onion, and salt and pepper to taste. Set bun tops in place.

Page 11 • July 23rd, 2021 • Chase Sunflower Obituary Helen Beauchamp August 22, 1937 - June 29, 2021 Helen passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at home in Chase, BC. She was a wonderful, kind and positive person and is deeply missed. She is lovingly remembered by daughter Wendy, son Jeff and 3 nieces and their families. She was predeceased by first and second husbands Dan Pomeransky and Ted Beauchamp and sister Joy Hemmings. Helen was born and raised in Calgary and spent many summer days with her family in the Rocky Mountains. She obtained a Chemistry Lab Technology diploma from SAIT in Calgary and later worked in a food safety lab in Lethbridge, AB. She met her first husband Dan while working for the summer at Chateau Lake Louise. They both loved being outdoors but sadly, their time together was short. Helen later lived in Lake Louise with husband Ted and their family. In 1977 the family moved to Chase and Helen enjoyed the milder climate and living by a lake that was warm enough for swimming. She became an avid gardener and loved fresh fruits and vegetables and tending to her flowers. She filled the pantry with preserved fruit, jam and home-pressed grape juice. Over the years she had much fun with the “Stitch Group" and besides crocheting, she enjoyed all the social activities and birthday celebrations. Helen also liked bowling, golf, curling and playing cards and board games with friends and family. Helen especially enjoyed outdoor activities like hiking, picnics, bicycling and cross-country skiing. After Ted retired, he and Helen went on many bus tours in Canada and the US and made longlasting friendships. Helen also went on many sightseeing car trips with Ted and on car-camping and hiking adventures with Wendy. Helen remained vibrant and active her whole life. She was proud to live independently in her own house and to have space for cherished family visits and Christmas dinners. Community says farewell to Dr. & Mrs. Quinn Submitted by Joan Anderson and Dave Lepsoe

A group of neighbours, representatives of the Chase Heat and the Rotary Club, former employees and numerous other friends gathered at Sunshore Shore Golf Club on July 15 for a farewell dinner to honour Wayne and Mona Quinn, who are moving away.

Wayne first came to Chase in 1974 as a Forrester and fell in love with the Shuswap area where he enjoyed all aspects of outdoor life. A few years later, Wayne left the area to further his education and pursue his new career as a chiropractor.

In 1998, Wayne returned to Chase with his wife Mona where he established his chiropractic practice. Mona continued her career as a nurse working both in the Chase Medical Clinic and the D and T Centre where she was known to be both a dedicated professional and a compassionate patient advocate.

Both of the Quinns served on various local organizations during their time here. At various times they were active in Citizens On Patrol and the Chase Rotary Club. They were avid supporters of the Chase Heat, billeting players, attending games, and for whom Wayne provided chiropractic care. Wayne was also an

active member of the Chase and District Chamber of Commerce, including serving a term as president.

Both Mona and Wayne enjoyed hiking and camping in the area and were strong advocates for the environment. They were both actively involved in the efforts

to retain the last remaining piece of lakefront in Chase as an environmentally protected greenspace.

This couple will be very much missed by the community. We wish them well as they enjoy their grandchildren and their new life on Vancouver Island.
