Salmon Arm “Shuswap Coffee House” Happenings

Wildwood Productions and the Gleneden Association are pleased to again present the popular Coffee House evenings—entertainment events that ran for ten years during the 1970’s and 80’s— to be held at Gleneden Hall located at 5151 49th Street NW, just west of Salmon Arm, running off TransCanada Highway opposite Pierre’s Point Road.

So, what is a “Coffee House?” The Oxford Canadian Dictionary defines it as a place serving coffee and refreshments, as well as (more significantly) live performances presented cabaret style.

And that’s what will be re-staged at the Hall every third Saturday from January 21st to May 2023. Shows will be Open Mic format, with talented local singers and instrumentalists stepping up to

Obituary Bertha (Betty) Elizabeth Campbell February 28, 1932 – January 4, 2023 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Betty Campbell at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, BC. Betty was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Tom, in 2016, brothers Lloyd Smith (Barriere), and Bud Smith (Langley), and sister Marge Foster (Kamloops). Betty is survived by her children and their families: Crichton (Julie Ann), grandsons Tommy, Hayden, and step-grandson Andrei Vivar of Lee Creek, BC, and daughter Kathryn (Gardner) of Ottawa, Ontario. Betty will also be missed by caring cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends made over the years.

Betty was born and raised in Langley, BC. She attended both Milner Public School and Langley High School. In 1949 she started teacher training at Vancouver Normal School. After some practice teaching in locations in British Columbia’s Interior, she met and married Tom Campbell in 1953.

The family would like to extend a thank you to the staff at Kamloops Seniors Village for the care, kindness and compassion given to Betty. A gathering to honour Betty’s life and memory will be planned for spring 2023. Donations in memory of Betty Campbell to the Intensive Care Unit at Royal Inland Hospital, 311 Columbia Street, Kamloops, BC V2C 2T1 would be appreciated.

Mayor’s Report

Hi everyone, I hope everybody’s enjoying the great weather lately. This is of course why we all live here in the best place in the world.

As per my election promise to connect the community, this will be my first of many letters to the community.

I have now been your Mayor for two months and I’m settling in.

Our Council is getting along well, and we have made a few changes already. One of the changes is to start holding the council meetings at the Village Office.

This will allow for greater efficiencies and better use of staff time. The other procedure we have changed is our council agendas will now be ready for

the public on the Friday before our Tuesday meeting instead of the Monday before. This will allow the public a better chance to review the agendas before our meetings. The Councillors now have their Liaison appointments and we have had a few training sessions for new councillors. Overall, I am very happy with the Village staff and council.

Everyone is fitting nicely into their new roles.

I was very pleased with the Public Works staff over the holidays in the minus 30-degree weather. We had a sewer lift station freeze, problems at the Water Treatment plant, and some water meters froze. As well as dealing with this they kept our roads open.

In December our new CFO (Chief Financial Officer) started working and we’re very happy with the progress she has made.

Lost in translation. I will be working on explaining council issues in layman's terms.

I’m also working on connecting all the clubs and talent we have in this village. One of the duties of the Mayor is to represent the Village at the TNRD, (Thompson Nicola Regional District). I will write more on how this works in a future article.

As I am writing this, I am enjoying the Coffee House music at the Legion.

So, Happy New Year to all and enjoy yourself while living in the best little Village in the world.

RCMP REPORT Submitted by Chase RCMP

Aggravated Assault Investigation File # 2023-5 On January 1, 2023, Police located a male in medical distress at an address in the 3800 block of Ska Cheen Drive. Police determined the male was suffering from injuries consistent with an assault. Investigation has revealed this to be an incident that was not random and there is no concern for the public at this time. Anyone with information regarding this incident can contact the Chase RCMP Detachment at 250679-3221.

Hit and Run Investigation.

On January 1, 2023, Chase RCMP were called about at hit and run accident on Pine St in Chase. The investigation revealed that at 330 am, a white pick up truck was north bound on Pine St, when it veered off the road to the right and slid across a front yard before striking some shrubbery and then crashing into a fence, causing the fence to break and damage another vehicle parked in the neighbour’s yard.

The vehicle then drove out of the driveway and fled north bound on Pine St. The pick up truck is described as being white with a lift kit and either a canopy or box in the bed of the truck. The truck will have sustained damage to the front passenger side and probable undercarriage damage.

Fatal Motor Vehicle Accident On January 3, 2023, at approximately 2:20 pm, Chase RCMP responded to a 2 vehicle Motor Vehicle accident on Hwy 1 just east of Chase on Jade Mountain. Upon police arrival, it was determined that a west bound SUV and collided with the flat deck trailer of a semi truck that was entering the roadway to travel east bound. The impact resulted in a fatality to the lone male occupant of the SUV. Hwy 1 was closed in both directions for approximately 6 hours as police investigated the accident. The Victim in this accident was a 79 yr old male from Lee Creek. The accident remains under investigation to determine events leading up to the accident.

WE’RE GOING TO MAKEsubmitted SOME NOISE

by Scott Koch Friday night January 6th, 2023 Heat President Darryl Adamson exclaimed the above on the inaugural “Heat Wave” on HockeyTV during an on air interview with the voice of the Heat Steve Smyth. It was a response to what the team is prepared to do for the rest of the season, and early signs have fans jumping back on the band wagon.

“Big D” may have something up his sleeve as the trade deadline fast approaches (Jan 10th), the team has brought back Bhavin Serown in an acquisition from the 100 Mile House Wranglers.

That same night the Heat hosted the suspension laden Nelson Leafs at the Art Holding Memorial Arena. This winnable contest for those in attendance or watching on hockeytv. com was entertaining. Bryan Fraser threw out an old style hip check early and was called for tripping. Mama mia a rare hip check and a beauty! Nelson took advantage and twitched the twine and they did it again 5 minutes later, but not a third time as Roderic May guarding the crease made a huge glove save. The end of 1, it’s 2-0 Leafs with the locals firing 14 shots in the period. In the 2nd the old adage “you can’t score if you don’t shoot” was to bear fruit. Ryan Keylor from Trevor Kennedy and Cohen Kallin, followed by a Nelson tally.

Hauled down on his way to the foe’s fort Maddex Bignell was awarded a penalty shot and it counted, a backhand stick side

dandy. Next up Kennedy from Kallin and Keylor with a sweet pass and tap in. After 2 it’s 3-3 and the Heat fired 18 shots!

Unfortunately for the fans Nelson scored a man advantage goal in the 3rd to claim victory 4-3. Overall the Heat fired 43 shots, a huge step in the right direction. A total team effort.

Saturday night found the team headed west to face the Loops lads of the Storm. The 1st period concluded 0-0. In the 2nd the Storm scored on a powerplay, shortly thereafter Aiden Brown from Malachi Franklin tied the contest up. Late in the period Kamloops forged ahead on a broken play. Late in the 3rd the Storm added a third tally to take this one 3-1. Chase shots on goal 32 so that statistic remains positive, however they allowed 44 against.

Meyer Gaume was awarded the star by the Kamloops broadcasters and that choice is hard to argue with.

Honourable mentions Franklin and Kaleb Preymak who played like he had fire ants in his pants.

While not winning there are positive signs popping up all over the roster. Physicality has increased, veteran leadership appears to be back, new acquisitions have been good additions, tenders are solid and the shot totals, everyone likes shots! The boys are away next week as they enjoy a killer bus trip to Fernie and Creston, most definitely a bus legs journey with an all nighter on the trip home. Catch them on hockeytv.com. Village of Chase Temporary, Casual On-Call Employment Opportunity Relief Driver - Public Works Reporting to the Director of Corporate Operations, and taking direction from the Team Lead Hand, a casual on-call employment opportunity exists in Public Works at the Village of Chase for a Relief Driver. Tasks include but are not limited to: • Performing pre and post trip inspections and driving the tandem axle solid waste truck, the front end loader, the snow plow truck and other heavy trucks and equipment • Ensuring trucks and other maintenance are appropriately reported and either repaired at the Public Works shop or arrangements are made for repairs to be done by an independent repair shop • Other duties as assigned Being a position within the Bargaining Unit, and in compliance with Article 11 of the Collective Agreement between the Village of Chase and the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 900, this notice is being provided to all Village of Chase Bargaining Unit staff as well as being posted externally.

The successful candidate will have: • A minimum Grade 12 education or equivalent • Valid Class 3 drivers’ license with air brake endorsement • Sound knowledge of heavy equipment and large trucks • Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with employees and members of the public • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions • Basic knowledge of precautionary work procedures to ensure public safety • Sound judgment The wage for this position is $33.05 per hour with 6% paid in lieu of annual vacation. The position is a casual on-call position, consisting of full and part-time hours as operationally required, and may involve weekend shifts as required. This position will not exceed nine (9) months in duration.
