hat a Winterfest, well it was colder this year, but many braved the weather to come out and participate downtown on Saturday, February 17th.

Our 1st inaugural Pet Parade sponsored

by K9 Kutzz was a great Success. First place went to Georgia the Lion, 2nd place went to Koda the snowboarder dog, and 3rd went to the youngest puppy Echo dressed like a football. We had cake and cupcakes galore that were given away in the cake walk, and cookie decorating.

Then the Great Chili Cookoff., sponsored

by Selnes family farm. The winner was Herb Kilback, 2nd was Clayton Beadle, and 3rd went to Chase Fire Dept. The outhouse races, sadly we only had 2, but the Haldane “PAC Potty” got best costume, while Chase Fire Dept in “Pooper 2” were the race winners. Also the craft fair and raffles we raised $352.00 more to support the Scotch Creek Fire Hall replacement. The winning 50/50 ticket was John August.

Thank you to everyone who came out, and those that participated. You all make Chase great by joining in and participating.

This contribution will go towards furnishing Riverstone Family Resource Centre in preparation for the launch of future early years services. Ken Coates

Ken Coates passed away peacefully at home on February 14, 2024 in Mission, British Columbia. He was born in Vancouver, British Columbia at St. Paul’s hospital to Myron “Bud” Coates and Ruby Coates. He married Isabelle Maureen on July 27, 1968 in Chase, British Columbia and they had two children Bruce and Dallas.

Ken served for three years total in the Queens Own Rifles, including his important contributions as a member of the United Nations Peacekeepers in Cyprus during the peacekeeping mission beginning in 1964.

He served in that arena for six months. After his military service, he worked in corrections in maximum through minimum security penitentiaries in the Mission, British Columbia area until his retirement in 2002 after thirty years. He was also a member of the Canadian Legion #45.

He was a passionate gardener, winning awards for his beautiful dahlias, lilies, and lawns. He was an avid reader who loved to read Westerns, Crime novels, and Military history – among others. Ken had a great sense of humor and was well known as a bit of a trickster, pulling pranks, and making jokes with family and friends alike.

Ken is survived by his wife Maureen, siblings Dave (and Carole), Gary (and Sandra), Judy (and Bert), Holly (and Pete); his sons Bruce and Dallas (and Ramona Elke); his grandchildren Dylan (and Haley) Anderson, Kendra Anderson, and Dante Coates; and his great-grandchildren Brynlee and Leland Anderson.

He was preceded in death by his father Myron “Bud” Coates, mother Ruby, and brother Kevin.

A celebration of life will be happening in the summer.

Gordon Lightfoot Tribute Concert Coming to Chase

Gordon Lightfoot’s voice, lyrics, and ballads entertained, indeed touched, Canadians for over 60 years. And to honour the late Canadian icon, Wildwood Productions will be mounting an afternoon concert, featuring his memorable music performed by talented local musicians and singers, on Saturday, April 13, at the Chase Community Hall.

Last November’s shows at Gleneden Hall both sold out—a testament to the popularity of Gordon and his marvellous songs.

As a boy soprano in his hometown of Orillia, Ontario, Gordon performed on local radio, in oratorio and operetta, at weddings and in music festivals. At age 13, he appeared in a concert of Kiwanis Festival Winners at Massey Hall in Toronto, the venerable site of many of his later triumphs.

In addition to being a star track and field athlete, as well as playing on his high school football team in his teens, Gordon studied piano, learned to play drums, and sang in a quartet called The Collegiate Four, which won first prize in a CBC TV talent competition called Pick the Stars. In his late teens, Gordon studied orchestration at Westlake College of Music in Los Angeles, while earning a living writing and arranging commercial jingles.

From 1959 to 1961, Lightfoot performed on CBC TV’s variety show Country Hoedown, and also began singing folk songs and playing guitar in Toronto, notably at The Riverboat, Canada’s most famous 1960’s and 1970’s coffee house that featured such other gifted artists as James Taylor, Simon & Garfunkel, Joni Mitchell, and Neil Young.

Although initially recognized as a talented songwriter—Ian & Sylvia, Peter, Paul & Mary, Elvis Presley, Marty Robbins Harry Belafonte, Judy Collins, Richie Havens and The Kingston Trio, among others, recorded his songs—Gordon had

a hit single with “I’m Not Sayin’” in 1965, and his 1966 debut album Lightfoot! achieved critical and commercial acclaim nationally and internationally. And as is said, the rest is history!

An acclaimed Lightfoot history comprises decades of sold-out annual performances at Massey Hall (his favourite venue), 300 songs written, including “Canadian Railroad Trilogy” commissioned by the CBC to mark Canada’s 1967 Centennial, hugely successful international and national tours, the respect of fellow performers, the devoted admiration of millions of fans, and 41 prestigious awards including three honourary Doctorate Degrees, the Order of Canada, and a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Don’t miss the upcoming tribute to Gordon, who dedicated his life to telling remarkable stories through music and who will live on through the meaningful words and beautiful melodies he’s left with us.

The Chase performance will be from 2:00 to 4:00 pm on Saturday, April 13.

Tickets at just $15 each (cash only) will be available in town at Safety Mart Foods, PharmaChoice Food & Drugs, Willows Natural Foods and the Chase Visitors Centre.

Note that the Visitor Centre is currently open from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Proceeds from the concert will be donated to and in support of the Chase Environmental Action Society.

The Board of Directors of the Thompson-Nicola Regional District gives notice that it will hold a Public Hearing in the TNRD Boardroom, 4th Floor - 465 Victoria Street, Kamloops, BC, to consider proposed Bylaw 2838, 2024.

What is Zoning Amendment Application No. BA 259, Bylaw 2838, 2024?

It would consider a site-specific amendment at 1585 Lance Road, in Prichard, BC (PID: 030-292-522), as shown outlined on the adjacent map, to enable a subdivision of the northeast corner of the subject property, creating a new 4900 sqm parcel, pursuant to s.514 of the Local Government Act (subdivision to provide a residence for a relative).

All persons who believe that their interest in property may be affected by the proposed bylaw shall be afforded a reasonable opportunity to provide input at the Public Hearing.
