Paramedics call for bychange to bargaining rights Cavelle Layes Chase residents are being asked to rally together in support of the paramedics that provide service to the area.

On February 25th a petition will be set up outside Safety Mart, taking signatures in support of amending the Fire and Police Bargaining act.

The petition that will be available to sign would allow BC paramedics to join the same bargain group as firefighters and police.

Currently, BCAS paramedics are not required to continue services should a strike action occur.

However, they want to ensure areas such as Chase are able to receive uninterrupted care, despite potential labour disagreements. Joining the Fire and Police Bargaining Group would allow just that.

BC paramedics were supposed to be added to their own bargaining group as part of their last agreement in 2009.

Instead however, they have been placed as part of a Facilities bargaining group, which includes services such as custodians and other non-emergency services. These services share little in common with BC paramedics and their concerns do not reflect that of emergency responders.

Joining with the fire and police bargaining group would allow them to collectively negotiate together, seeking solutions to common problems the impact all three emergency services, including allowing continued uninterrupted care.

BCAS paramedics have 90 days to gather enough signatures to allow the amendment.

During this time they must collect 10 per cent of the signatures from registered voters in every riding. If all ridings get 14 per cent of signatures, except for one riding that collects 9 per cent, the amendment will not succeed.

There will be a number of locations set up until the first two weeks of April, however, the newly added Feb. 25th date will be the only one in Chase.

Those who would like to support their local paramedics, and help ensure Chase receives continued, uninterrupted care, can stop by Safety Mart on Feb. 25th from 11 am until 3 pm. They will need to provide their name, a signature as well as address. Only registered voters can sign the petition, and signing only takes a few minutes.

Though it may not look like it outside, summer is only a few months away and that means Chase Memorial Beach will once again be the place to go for family fun and activities. The Chase & District Festival Society is proud to be the umbrella organization for many of the community events that happen at the park over the summer including: National Aboriginal Day, Canada Day, Chase CornStock, Music on the Lake, and Culture Days.

With 15 days of scheduled events and activities during 2017, there are always opportunities for volunteers to share their talents or expand their abilities. The more volunteers and organizations who become involved throughout the year, the greater and more vibrant the events will be.

RCMP Report

The Chase RCMP Detachment are reminding drivers that temperature and weather conditions for this time of year create road conditions that can quickly change. Drivers are asked to be watchful for changing road conditions and to drive accordingly.

Theft On January 28th, 2017 Chase RCMP received a report of mischief to a vehicle.

The owner advised they parked the vehicle at the Senior Centre in Sorrento at 9:45am. When they returned at 12:15 pm they found the window had been smashed. No items were noted missing from inside the vehicle.

On January 28th, 2017, Chase RCMP received a report of a possible attempted theft of vehicle during the previous night.

A resident on Hysop Rd, Chase BC, reports finding his vehicle with damage to the ignition with small items missing form inside the vehicle.

On the morning of January 29th 2017, a resident on Caen Rd, Sorrento, awoke to discover that during the previous night someone damaged the interior of his car, including the ignition, leaving it with the hood open and emergency lights flashing.

On February 7th, 2017, Chase RCMP received a report of mischief to a vehicle.

The vehicle owner advised that after parking their vehicle in a lot on Shuswap Avenue, Chase BC for the afternoon and early evening. They returned to find the driver’s window smashed. The vehicle was gone through but no items of value were kept in the vehicle and nothing was taken.

On February 8th, 2016 the Chase RCMP received a report of a theft of an 80 gallon propane tank from the Sorrento/Blind Bay Park in Sorrento, BC.

Submitted by RCMP, Chase Detachment On February 15th, 2017 staff at the South Thompson Eco Depot located at 1595 Martin Prairie Road, Pritchard BC determined through surveillance video that a male entered the premises in the early morning hours and steal several electronic waste items. Chase RCMP are investigating to determine the identity of the male suspect.

On February 17th, 2017, Chase RCMP received a report of two males entering unlocked vehicles on Juniper Street at approximately 4:00 am. A resident of the street reviewed the surveillance on his property and found it captured two males entering a vehicle at a neighbouring residence.

On February 17th, 2017, a resident on Shuswap Chase Creek Road, Chase, BC determined two unknown males attended their residence the night before at approximately 9:00pm. No one was home but the males acted suspiciously by looking in windows. Entry was not gained to the residence and the males left in a green Ford SUV. On February 18th, 2017 at 2:35am, Chase RCMP attended a report of a single vehicle collision on the Trans Canada Hwy, near Francois Rd, in Chase, BC. Upon arrival police found an unoccupied Ford F150. Police contacted the registered owner to ensure the safety of the occupants and were advised the truck had been stolen from a residence on Larch St in Chase BC. On February 19th, 2017 at 4:34 am, Chase RCMP were dispatched to a break and enter at the Underwood Hotel in Chase, BC. An adult female was identified as suspect in this matter, arrested and released with a court date of April 27th, 2017.

received a report of a Bravo boat leg taken from the owner’s boat on Chase Rd, Celista BC. The Chase Detachment is aware of the suspect activities in the area and is increasing patrols using both marked and unmarked police vehicles. We are asking residents to please be aware of any unusual activity in the area and to contact police when it occurs so we may respond accordingly.

Other On February 10th, 2017 at 9:20 pm, Chase RCMP were dispatched to a fight in progress at the Chase Plaza parking lot at 305 Brooke Drive, Chase, BC. Five individuals were reported to be involved.

Two intoxicated males were arrested for Causing a Disturbance. They were lodged in cells until sober and released with a warning against similar behaviour in the future.

On February 16th, 2017 at approximately 10:48 am, Chase RCMP received a call from a concerned resident in Chase BC. The resident noted a set of snowmobile tracks leading out onto Little Shuswap Lake and appeared to end at a white and yellow object. Due to warm temperatures ice on the lake was melting raising a concern of someone stranded on the ice.

Shuswap Search and Rescue attended with a four member Ice Crew who were able to walk to the location. They confirmed that the object was a pile of snow and the snowmobile tracks continued away from the area.

Q • How long have you lived in Chase a n d what do you like about it?

A • I have lived in Chase for a year now. I love that we have music on the lake and all the summer camps for the kids and the amazing beaches .

Q • Where did you move from?

A • I moved from Kamloops.

Q • You have many roles in the community - what are they and what do you like about them?

A • I volunteer with Chase Fire Rescue and I volunteer with St. John ambulance in Kamloops. What I love most about it is knowing I can potentially save someone’s life with the skills I have acquired. And I do aesthetic services from home.

Q • How long have you been with St. John’s Ambulance and Chase Fire Rescue and what led your down this route?

A • I have been with St. John ambulance for 1.5 years roughly and I have been on the Chase Fire department for 3 months and I look forward to many years to come.

Q • If you were stranded on an island what three things would you not be able to live without?

A • If I were to be stranded on an island the 3 things I wouldn’t be able to live without are: my kids, my nail supplies, and mashed potatoes with gravy, haha!

A • I have 3 kids.

WATER SPLASH PAD UPDATE The Chase Lions have been busy gathering information and working with Engineers for the proposed Water Splash Pad at Memorial Park. Spray Park designs, engineering and specifications are complete, and formal submissions sent to Interior Health for an “Application for Pool or Operating Permit”. Cost Estimates have been projected and a committee is currently working on monetary and in-kind donations to fine tune the overall budget and planning. The Chase Lions are planning an open house Community meeting to allow the public to attend, review the plans and ask questions, and most important... gauge the overall support within the community. Date will be released in the

next two weeks.

WHAT DOES A SPLASH PAD DO? Splash parks create an environment that children of all ages and abilities will enter with equal enthusiasm. The tiniest toddler can play with the gentle ground sprays while the older kids commandeer the cannons in an effort to spray their friends and family. With rain caps that give the sense of hiding from the water, to group volcano’s that inspire kids to work together, and ground lily pad activators that are low enough for all, including children with wheelchairs easily access spray parks. For children who are unable to see, the sense of touch is both cool and exciting. Children who cannot hear love the bright colors, the extra thick and tall components and the soft mist upon their face. Splash Pads know “no age”.

SPCA’s National Cupcake Day

On Monday, February 27th, which is the SPCA’s National Cupcake Day, you will find NATTY CAKES cupcakes available by donation at Miller’s Cabin and Village Lanes Fun Centre in Chase.

The funds raised will have a significant impact on the shelters, clinics and animal cruelty inspectors in our c om mu n it y.

So please join me and the SPCA to help fight for those animals who cannot speak

for themselves.

Residents of the TNRD (ThompsonNicola Regional District) can come to the library and register. Picture ID and proof of address are needed (e.g. driver’s license, status card, BCID). If new to the area, a piece of mail showing the new local address plus picture ID will do the trick.

Children 12 and over can register for a library card by themselves. ID such as a medical services card, status card, birth certificate, or student card are sufficient.

Children under 12 can get a card when parent/guardian signs for them, with the same ID requirements as for older children.

Chase library is part of the TNRD public library system and a cardholder has access to the entire collection, which includes libraries in Kamloops, Merritt,

and other smaller branches. Chase is the last library in the TNRD before the Okanagan Region.

Residents of other parts of BC can borrow items from Chase library by first registering at a library in their region, then bringing the card into Chase library to have it registered as a BC OneCard. This agreement is useful for people who live close to Chase, but are in the Okanagan Regional District. Scotch Creek or Blind Bay libraries are the closest ones in the Okanagan Regional Library System.

Residents from other regions can also pay $30 for a 6-month non-resident card.

Folks from other provinces who work temporarily in BC may prefer this option.

Anybody can come in and use the library space, whether or not they are a cardholder. The 3 computers are available, first come-first serve, on a time limit.

“Honor Books” are a small selection of paperbacks that can be borrowed without a library card, on an honor system. People who are just visiting or can’t get a library card for some other reason can take a book home to read in this way. Check out the book sale shelf and the box of giveaway magazines and books in the front entrance, or find a comfortable spot and enjoy reading in the library. Wifi is also available.

REGULAR SEASON DONE, PLAYOFFS COMMENCE

By Scott Koch two meaningless games to wrap up the Regular Season. Friday night at AHMA resulted in a 9-0 victory over the Sicamous EAGLES. In this contest Nic Bruyere earned a shutout, Travis Beaubien reached 100 points in his Junior career, Josh Bourne enjoyed a five point night including a hat trick and Spencer Farstad had 2 goals and 2 assists. In the 2nd game the HEAT travelled to 100 Mile and saw the tables turned taking an 8-2 trashing. A bright note saw Zachary Fournier achieve 100 points in his Junior Career, all with the HEAT. Michael Fidanza finishes the campaign with 23 goals and 43 assists for 66 points, for a 4th place tie in overall KIJHL scoring. Josh Bourne finishes in 10th place with 28 goals, 29 assists for 57 points. Nic Bruyere finishes 5th in save percentage at 0.922 and 10th in goals

After 47 Regular Season games the Chase HEAT achieve 1st place in their Doug Birks Division and claim home ice advantage for the first two rounds of the Playoffs.

This Friday the 24th at the Art Holding Memorial Arena the intensity increases as the HEAT face the Revelstoke GRIZZLIES in a best of 7 opening round. Game 2 goes Saturday the 25th at AHMA at 7:00 pm. Games 3 and 4 shift to the Revelstoke Forum on Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th. Game 5 if necessary is in Chase on Thursday March 2nd, Game 6 in Revelstoke on Friday the 3rd and Game 7 back in Chase on Saturday the 4th. The winner of this series will meet either the 100 Mile House WRANGLERS or Kamloops STORM in the 2nd round starting March 7th.

In other news the 6th Annual HEAT Awards Banquet took place Sunday the 19th at the Adams Lake Indian Band Conference Centre. Over 200 enjoyed a succulent meal provided by tireless HEAT Volunteers. Ms. Salmon is a former luge Olympian and 6 time Canadian Champion. Head Coach Brad Fox gave a passionate address thanking all those who have made his 7 years to this point in Chase a very rewarding experience.
