‘Tis the season …… by Carolyn Parks-Mintz, Author and Journalist

…..however, ‘tis a season like no other ever experienced by most of us. That being said, many are finding ways to brighten a time of year when evening’s darkness arrives early, weather turns cold, and at present, when health precautions and restrictions abound. While many of our traditions will be missed this year, ‘tis still the season of giving—and Chase citizens, as well as businesses, organizations, and area communities are proving that, in spite of a viral pandemic. On a personal level, individuals are extending help to others by running errands, shopping for groceries, picking up prescriptions, and shovelling snow. Phone or video calls to people confined at home or in care do much to enhance their day. Seamstresses, knitters, and quilters are generously donating beautiful handcrafted gifts that will undoubtedly bring smiles to those who receive them. The Chase Hamper Society reports that contributions have been generous again this year, whether financial, foodstuffs, or the invaluable hours put in by its volunteers, whose numbers have grown since March and include a jolly Santa delivering gifts. In addition, a local business and its staff undertook a musical drive-by donation pickup throughout the village. And many businesses are participating in the “Light up Chase, Sponsor a Tree” initiative which supports the food bank and Chase Minor Hockey. The economic and employment downturn due to COVID-19 have resulted in dire need for many who have Sponsored by Todd

never been in such a position before. And the Hamper Society is there to help, whether by providing nutritious food or gifts for children. Alleviating hardship is a good thing. It’s said that we truly own only what we give away—or as the late singer-actress Dale Evans once said, “Christmas is love in action.” Those of a certain age—the generation known as “well-experienced” —are at high risk of catching the insidious virus among us and have been isolated for many months. They are especially being remembered this year through gift programmes overseen by Parkside Community Retirement Living, the Chase Hamper Society and a core area retailer who has set up a ‘donation tree.’ Contributions to the Chase & District Museum’s annual Christmas Store have been especially prolific this year. Established as a source of economical gifts, while supporting a village nonprofit organization, this unique retail outlet is particularly important during the current holiday season. And it’s not only locals who’ve stepped up, dug deep, and showed they care—at this writing, British Columbian citizens and businesses have contributed over $2.5 million to CBC’s annual food bank fundraiser which will continue until December 31st. Whether observing the Winter Solstice or the religious aspects of the season, First Nations families gather to remember and honour the gifts passed down by their ancestors and draw on the strength of

their time-honoured cultural teachings. In recent decades, the Adams Lake First Nation through its Council, Executive Director, and Managers has developed new tools to deliver services in a changing world, with varied opportunities to create and advance band programs, develop economic initiatives, and provide meaningful employment for more families. Kukpi7 (Chief) Cliff Arnouse advises that various customs are followed within their community this time of year, resulting in a blend of activities. “Taking care of one another is always a priority though,” he reports. “Band members raise or donate money to help those who are ill, injured or in need. Salmon and game are shared throughout the community year-round.” The Little Shuswap Lake Band enhances the overall quality of life of its community by uniting its members through a community base that preserves its lands, assets, history and knowledge to share with future generations. Kukpi7 (Chief) Oliver Arnouse, states, “We know who is in need, and we help out. The community also provides Good Food Boxes to our Elders each month. And we’ve expanded our emergency crews, fire department, as well as the Band Office staff to handle any urgent situations.” The Neskonlith Indian Band offers a comprehensive home and community care program that encompasses health, wellness, housing, education and social services, throughout the year. Championing Chase

Kukpi7 (Chief) Judy Wilson adds, “Sharing with one another is a key cultural belief and way of life, especially for those who are doing without. However, this year we will forego the annual holiday dinner and presents at the hall. Instead, the band office is arranging food cards and other supports to members, who understand that celebrations this year must be different. Their patience and cooperation are appreciated by all.” She points out that the Winter Solstice this year on December 21st is extra special, with a planetary conjuncture, which is celebrated through prayers, offerings, drum songs and meditation.

Whether your season marks Hanukkah, Diwali, Winter Solstice or Christmas, the true meaning of the holidays is the same—remembering, being grateful, offering kindness, spending time with loved ones (even if only via technology), enjoying good food, and sharing what we have. Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukkah! Season’s Greetings! Happy Diwali! Le7es ke7 su7ecs ne xyum te sitq’t! And may all the very best of life’s good things come your way in 2021!

Amongst the Weeds Herbal Apothecary Advertorial by author and journalist Carolyn Parks Mintz

The Place 723 Shuswap Avenue, Chase, BC 250.679.3440 www.amongsttheweeds.com Email: friends@amongsttheweeds.com The Management Dallyse Good, Owner/Manager The Story Herbalism and recognition of the medicinal benefits of plants predate written human history. Archaeological evidence and prehistoric burial sites from 60,000 years ago indicate that ancient inhabitants worldwide used herbal remedies. And Indigenous peoples have always looked to the plants around them to treat health issues. The experienced owner of a new business in Chase drew upon this link between historical evidence and modern healthful supplements when she opened Amongst the Weeds. Trained in botany, plant-based preparations, and herbalism, Canadian-born Dallyse Good brings enthusiasm and knowledge to helping others with their personal care, along with her confidence that herbalism can work very well with contemporary medicine. What plants and herbs can contribute to wholesome living is a significant part of Dallyse’s business and personal philosophy. Sharing this encouraging information with clients is her mission. Having operated a successful homebased herbal business in the USA, upon moving to Chase in late 2019, Dallyse soon opened a shop on the village’s main street, in order to make herbalism available to the residents of Chase and area. From her own experience, she knows it is empowering and enriching to

have a hand in one’s health and lifestyle. In addition to bulk herbs, Amongst the Weeds also has an extensive stock of allnatural body products, as well as a wide range of loose-leaf herbal teas, the most popular of which are blended by Dallyse herself. And to go along with those warm brews so comforting on a winter evening, the retailer carries hand-thrown ceramic mugs, candles, books, and beautiful gift items—whether as a treat for yourself or for someone special. While continuing with her own lifelong learning through education, Dallyse plans to offer herbalism workshops for the public in the future—as well as finding time to create her own salves and tinctures as she’s done in the past. So, stay tuned. And do drop in to say hello and check out the unique inventory of this new shop. You’ll be glad you did!

Obituary Darcy Donald Railton

With heavy hearts we announce that on December 7th, Darcy Donald Railton passed away peacefully at the age of 60. He fought a long difficult battle with melanoma and refusing any strong medications so that he wouldn't miss a moment of life. He was amazing to everyone who cared for him. He is survived by his wife Linda who was also his child hood friend knowing each other for 50 years. Also survived by his daughter Jesse and husband Mike McCrindle, grandson Wyatt. His brothers Lionel Railton (Kelly) 3 nephews, Scott Railton (Julie). Mother and father in-law Jim and Beth Bolton, brother in-laws Jim and Jerry (also best friend). His special and dear Aunt, Lynn Ashcroft, cousins Lyle and Brad Railton. Also survived by many more relatives. Predeceased by his parents Don Railton and Darlene Railton. Also paternal grandparents and maternal grandparents. Darcy was born in Dawson Creek on July 25, 1960. Raised as a child in Mica Creek (where he met Linda) and later moving to Kamloops as a teenager. His career began in following the men in his family's footsteps and operating heavy equipment in the union with Local 115. Then operating drill tecs for his Uncle Meryle's company Westrail construction. After years of construction Darcy ended his working career as a Kamloops city bus driver for 10 years. 4 years ago Darcy moved with family members onto a hay farm in Chase. His daughter has Cow Pony Equestrian and he helped with starting Little Wyatt's Petting Zoo. His ideas and efforts at the farm were a great asset and are going to be forever missed. Darcy loved his pets cats, dogs and Sqeeker the dwarf goat. His special love was for Hunter his border collie dog. Darcy loved fishing and camping trips, especially the yearly holiday at Canyon Hot Springs His hobbies included working on vehicle projects or growing his yearly beautiful tomatoes. A special thank you to Kamloops Hospice for their great care and all his doctors. A Celebration of Life for Darcy will be held with family and friends in May 2021 at the Chase farm. Instructions Whisk the egg yolks and sugar together in a medium bowl until light and creamy. In a saucepan over medium-high heat, combine the cream, milk, nutmeg and salt. Stir often until mixture reaches a bare simmer. Add a big spoonful of the hot milk to the egg mixture, whisking vigorously. Repeat, adding a big spoonful at a time, to temper the eggs. Once most of the hot milk has been added to the eggs, pour the mixture back into the saucepan on the stove. Whisk constantly for just a few minutes, until the mixture is just slightly thickened (or until it reaches about 160 degrees F on a thermometer). It will thicken more as it cools. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla. Pour the eggnog into a pitcher or other container and cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate until chilled. It will thicken as it cools. If you want a thinner, completely smooth consistency, you can add the entire mixture to a blender with 1 or 2 tablespoons of milk and blend until smooth. Serve with a sprinkle of cinnamon, and fresh whipped cream, if desired. Store homemade eggnog in the fridge for up to one week.
