We have a need for fresh food donations at this time of year when gardens and orchards are yielding fresh produce!

We have two regular days per month, the first and third Mondays, that the Food Bank is open. Thanks to refrigeration grants from Food Banks BC, we now have coolers to keep our

produce fresh for several days, and can store donations that come in ahead of Food Bank Days. Agriculture is an absolute calling for Peter and Raymonde Murray --and aren’t we glad!

The Murrays have a strong connection Leaving his position as company doctor to the land—whether that be through a for Alcan Aluminum in Kitimat during genetic trait or a learned affinity. And Pete the early 1970’s, Haakon and wife Ruth Murray’s Corn Farm at Wagon Wheel Ranch just west of Chase is the thriving result.

Pete’s grandfather was a physician, practising in Trinidad, then a British Crown Colony.

Wherever she’s lived the colour and beauty of flowering plants have always been important to her and fill an important niche in her surroundings to this day on their rural property.

And whenever Pete Murray was on a farm he was enjoying himself—whether during travels to South and Central America or at home in Canada. If he were surrounded by wide open spaces and crops, Pete was content. Definitely in his happy place.

One of his first summer jobs was at Golden Ears Farm on Planters Road outside Chase, working for Don and Barb Ely. “When Don was tragically killed in an accident,” Pete says, “Barb asked if I wanted to lease their farmland. I was just 22 years of age but immediately said yes.

That’s when farming corn began for me.”

Henry Grube, founder of Golden Ears and a long-time agriculturalist in the area who’d sold to Don and Barb, was a mentor to young Pete as he undertook farming 30 acres. “Henry had experience in this area and with its climate,” states Pete, “always had answers for my questions. And I’d plant four acres in corn on his property which he’d then look after.”

“And Henry grew beautiful gladioli,” adds Ray, “that he’d put in lovely bouquets for the locals.

Growing things seems to be something that’s difficult to give up.

Pete eventually leased land from Dan and Joyce. “Dad always wanted to see the property yielding vegetables,” reports Ray, “and both he and Mom were very happy to have Pete farm it, to have produce coming off it.

Given her corporate background, Ray capably handles the accounting, payroll, and scheduling for the farm, all the business minutia of a successful enterprise.. “And she’s a very good cook too,” adds Peter with a smile.

This practical and positive partnership frees up Pete for all the farming work necessary to their operation—which includes planting early and effectively, crop rotation, scouting the fields, proper drainage and irrigation, fertilizing, and weeding.

Corn Farm

“Every step is important,” says Pete.

“The land prep and getting the soil ready creates a smooth seed bed for seed/soil contact. Our seeding is done by machine and fortunately the land drains well. We do flame weeding to control weeds, which is done before crop seeds have sprouted.

I don’t like using chemicals personally and also for my customers, and haven’t used sprayed-in herbicides in 35 years.

Crop rotation is effective.”

The Murray’s corn crop is hilled as well.

“This kills weeds that may have come up and provides more nutrients to the plants from the soil,” Pete reports. “And I scout the crop land regularly.”

With hired help that totals six to eight field and shed staff each year, the corn is hand-picked fresh every day, providing the best product for their customers, whether it be at the Murray’s roadside stand or at the weekly Kamloops farmers’ market.

Manure and hay waste is composted and spread on the fields—definitely a significant part of a ‘green’ operation.

Their larger clientele extending to northern British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan indicates that the reputation of their quality produce has become well known.

Today, the Murrays cultivate about 75 acres, which yield corn, potatoes, pumpkins, hay and silage. Their business also comprises production of honey from the hives on their farm and raising sheep.

You could say it’s a ‘meat and potatoes’ operation that also includes vegetables and dessert. The full meal deal.

Following their parents’ examples, this busy couple manages to contribute to the community as well—donating dozens of ears of corn to Chase’s CornStock event and taking part in the Christmas parade with their popular hay wagon rides.

When asked about agricultural challenges, both Pete and Ray agree the biggest thing is the weather. “It’s something you can’t control and is variable in so many ways,” says Pete.

“When I started farming with Peter, the unpredictability of powerful weather was a steep learning curve for me,” says Ray. All the work and time that go into putting in a crop can be wiped out in a day. Agriculture is a gamble and you have to have a lot of faith.”

“And the climate is definitely changing,” adds Pete. “We on the land know this.”

“We grew lots of strawberries successfully for years,” relates Ray. “But the last five years were either too hot or too cold and then pests arrived. And lack of pollination was a problem too.

That’s when we decided to get bees.

But eventually we gave up trying to grow good strawberries.”

Challenges and Rewards of Farming

To add to the weather conundrum, crop insurance carried by larger operations doesn’t cover all losses, whether they be financial or the emotional investment that is involved in a livelihood based on a living, growing entity.

Describing the incentives of his work, Pete says, “For me personally, it’s a passion. I just love it. Watching all we grow absolutely works for me. Being part of food production is what it’s all about.”

When Ray is asked about the rewards of farm management, she pauses momentarily—and that’s when a smiling Peter interjects, “Me?” Smiles all around!

She then goes on, “I think providing good, healthy food for people is a big part of it. And seeing how excited folks get about it. Then there’s the opportunity to see families grow up as they come to our stand or market—kids who came with their parents eventually arrive as a couple, then they’re engaged, married and coming with their own children.”

“We particularly see this in our pumpkin

patch visitors where kids get the chance to see how food is actually produced, that it comes from the ground and from nurturing care—not magically sprouted in a package on a grocery store shelf or display.”

Ray and Pete agree that being selfemployed has its benefits. “We have some flexibility,” they say, “for instance, being able to work in this interview.

And the couple especially want to express their heartfelt thanks to the loyal customer base that has been with them for so many years—40 years says it all. The Murrays raise excellent products and people respond, for which Pete and Ray are very grateful.

When questioned about what they like best about living where they live, Pete enthusiastically says, “Look around!

It’s a wonderful place to be. Moderate temperatures year round. The river. We live on the place from which we make our living and there’s the history of our families here.”

Ray adds, “It’s like living in a unique bubble. And there are so many different layers to being here. Living in my family home, with the original 1939 barn nearby, on my parents’ land that’s now our land is special. As well, it’s a gathering place for family and friends too. We feel fortunate.”

“And we put in a lot of hard work to be here,” says Pete. “But it’s satisfying and worthwhile work.”

The Murray’s story reminds your scribbler of a Country & Western song by Travis Tritt, in which the entertainer sings about a farming father counselling his restless son: “Hard times are real There’s dusty fields No matter where you go And you may change your mind ‘Cause the weeds are high Where corn don’t grow.”

Corn and Cherry Tomato Salsa Ingredients 1 can (15 ounces) diced fireroasted tomatoes* 1 clove garlic, roughly chopped ½ cup roughly chopped white onion (about ½ small onion) ¼ cup lightly packed fresh cilantro leaves ½ medium jalapeño, seeds and ribs removed, and roughly chopped 1 tablespoon lime juice, more if needed ½ teaspoon fine sea salt Instructions Drain off about half of the tomato juice from the can (about ⅓ cup) and discard it.

In a food processor, pulse the garlic to chop it more

finely. Add the tomatoes and all of the remaining juice from the can. Add the onion, cilantro, jalapeño, lime juice, and salt.

Process the mixture until it is mostly smooth and no big chunks of tomato or onion remain, scraping down the sides as necessary. Season to taste with additional lime juice and salt, if necessary.

Serve the salsa immediately or store it for later. This salsa keeps well in the refrigerator, covered, for about 10 days.

This recipe yields about 6 pint jars.

RCMP Report submitted by Chase RCMP

TRAFFIC On August 10th, 2019 at approximately 7:00pm, the Chase RCMP Detachment received a report of a single vehicle collision on Squilax Anglemont Road in Celista. A 2000 Saturn automobile left the road striking a fence.

Police believed the female driver was operating the vehicle while impaired by alcohol. The driver failed to provide samples of her breath. She was issued a 90 Day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days PROPERTY On August 10th, 2019 at 8:30am, the Chase RCMP Detachment received a report of theft of a 1996 White Dodge 2500 pickup truck with Alberta licence plate CCN5888.

The truck was stolen from the driveway of the residence on Holding Road in Adam’s Lake, BC. Later this date, at approximately 6:20pm, the owner’s saw their vehicle driving near Kamloops Shuswap Road in Chase, BC. The truck fled the area. Extensive patrols were made by police but the vehicle was not located.

On August 18th, 2019 at 9:40am, the Chase RCMP Detachment received a report of theft of a 2003 grey Honda Civic with BC plate JB984F. The car was stolen from a residence on Hillside Avenue in Chase, BC. The vehicle has not been located.

On August 22nd, 2019, just

after midnight, patrolling members of the Chase RCMP Detachment were advised of a dirt bike being towed by a truck on Pine Street in Chase, BC. Police located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop.

The dirt bike was found to be have been stolen from the Salmon Arm area several days prior and was seized by police. This incident remains under investigation.

The Chase RCMP Detachment is asking that anyone with any information regarding these investigations, or any other crime, to contact the Chase Detachment at (250) 679-3221 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-2228477.

2:50pm, members of the Chase Detachment were on patrol when they observed a male riding a dirt bike on Hillside Avenue in Chase, BC. Police activated their emergency lights and sirens in attempts to have the man stop but he fled on Hillside Road, eventually fleeing off the roadway. On August 18th, 2019 the man was located and arrested by police. He was found to be breaching conditions of his recognizance and was held in custody to appear in Kamloops Provincial Court. Criminal charges have since been formally laid by the BC Prosecution Service. Troy Ian MICHEL, 37 years-old of Chase, BC, has been charged with Flight from Police and Breach of Recognizance.

OTHER During the months of August, September and October of 2018, the Chase RCMP Detachment received several reports of a male fraudulently using a stolen credit card at businesses in Scotch Creek and Sorrento. Police investigation identified the suspect as a 52-year-old man of no fixed address from the Salmon Arm area. Criminal charges were formally laid by the BC Prosecution Service.

Back to School – The Buses Are Back!

Summer break is ending and preparations are underway for the first day back to school for the 2019 - 2020 school year in the district, on Tuesday, September 3.

With a new school year quickly approaching, the Canada Safety Council would like to remind drivers to be extra cautious as school buses return to the roads.

Despite it being an annual occurrence, the return of school buses often brings about episodes of impatience, confusion regarding some of the rules of the road and a spike in fatalities and injuries among young pedestrians from September to November.

With this context in mind, here are a few tips to ensure that everyone, from you to the littlest bus rider to the driver getting them to school, is staying safe on the roads: Leave yourself a bit of extra time to get wherever you’re going. Being in a rush is no excuse for disobeying the rules of the road and endangering the lives of others.

When a bus has its arm extended and flashing lights, stop. It’s the law. Do not proceed until the lights are turned off, as there may still be children coming or attempting to cross the street. In most cases, traffic in both directions must stop unless separated by a median.

Slow down in school zones. Be vigilant and careful in residential areas where children are present as well. Moving slowly and predictably can help children feel more at ease and make them less likely to try and rush.

Avoid doing manoeuvres like threepoint turns and U-turns in school zones.

Children are often unfamiliar or simply not expecting these, which can cause them to be in the wrong place at the wrong time as a result.
