Chase’s Terry Fox Run
– Fun and for an Excellent Cause by Carolyn Parks Mintz, Author & Freelance Writer
Chase Fire & Rescue is again organizing something special—the countrywide event that’s taking place in Chase on September 16th, a day that unites Canadians in remembering an amazing young man, raises awareness of cancer, a disease which seemingly touches every family—and procures funds to fight it. The Terry Fox Run is all that and more. Terry Stanley Fox was born July 28, 1958 in Winnipeg. By all accounts, Terry was determined and tenacious even when a youngster, and as a teen-ager, regardless of being of average height, became crazy for basketball. His enthusiasm and hard work at the sport he loved meant that Terry was soon a starting guard in high school and received an Athlete of the Year Award in Grade XII—all while maintaining high marks in his studies. Besides improving his basketball skills, Terry was a first class soccer player and a gutsy rugby player. Sports were Terry’s spark to try harder, to run raster, and to test and prove himself. Entering university to study kinesiology with plans to teach high school physical education, Terry decided to try out for Simon Fraser University’s elite basketball team. The grueling two week camp was designed to sort the wheat from the chaff and again Terry’s dedication and hard work meant he made the team. He simply out-gutted the other hopefuls with his physical and mental toughness. At age 19, in 1977, this dedicated athlete would begin the fight of his life. Terry was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma, bone cancer, in his right leg which had to be amputated. While undergoing treatment, the

suffering of other cancer patients touched him and he made the decision to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. So began Terry’s Marathon of Hope. In the wake of securing sponsorships and support, his Marathon started in April of 1980 when he dipped his prosthetic leg in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Newfoundland at Mile Zero and headed west. For the next 143 days, Terry ran an average of 41 kilometers (26 miles) every day—his grit and determination carrying him through a race against time. On September 1st in Thunder Bay, Ontario, he would be forced to end his run as the cancer had spread to his lungs. But by February 1981, his Marathon of Hope achieved Terry’s dream of raising $1 for every person in Canada—$24.17 million! In June of 1981, this remarkable athlete left us, at just 22 years of age. However, Terry Fox forever changed Canadians, and his legacy continues to this day. During 2016-17, $23.6 million was directed to innovative cancer research by the Terry Fox Foundation, a leading national investor in the study of cancer and its treatment Chase Fire & Rescue is organizing a Terry Fox Run—which is actually a “walk, run, ride or roller blade” event—even horseback riding can happen. Routes of 1 km, 5 km, and 10 km will be laid out. Registration, pledge sheets and fundraising can be accessed online at www. terryfox.org/run, and will be available on race day at the start site, Safety Mart Food’s parking lot. More on page 5

Terry Fox Run Fire Chief Brian Lauzon and his brigade are looking forward to a good turnout for this year’s event. “Everyone’s welcome. Supporting a cause like this,” he states, “is good for the community and especially important to the development of new treatments for cancer. Who hasn’t been touch by that disease?” “All Terry Fox runs are volunteer-based, and we’re pleased to put together the one here in Chase. We have t-shirts and “I’m running for ________” tags that make the run extra special.” Since 1980, Terry’s legacy of compassion and care for others has funded nearly 1,300 research projects—with 82¢ of every dollar raised going toward the study of what has become the plague of the millennium. So complete your registration, get your gang together, contact your favourite running/walking/riding partner, lace on your run/walk shoes or roller blades, or saddle up, and take part in something
that makes a difference. Terry Fox ran for us all—let’s do this for him, for ground-breaking science—and to mark what would have been Terry’s 60th birthday year. Long may he run! Terry Fox explaining his goal to raise money for research: “I realized that would only be half my quest, for as I went through the 16 months of the physically and emotionally draining ordeal of chemotherapy, I was rudely awakened by the feelings that surrounded and coursed through the cancer clinic. There were faces with the brave smiles, and the ones who had given up smiling. There were feelings of hopeful denial and the feelings of despair. I could not leave knowing these faces and feelings would still exist even though I would be set free from mine. Somewhere the hurting must stop … and I was determined to take myself to the limit for this cause.”

Dozens of Roses for the people who look after the flowers of Chase. The hanging baskets and flowers in front of the community centre are awesome. Good work. Dozens of Buckets of Thorns for whoever is responsible for the high price of water now. Many people are letting their lawns go dry. Too bad.

WEST MY FRIEND submitted by Chase & District Festival Society
Described as everything from indieroots to chamber-folk, West My Friend has an acoustic blend of instruments and three-part harmonies that challenges the conventions of popular music. The band features pure and thrillingly elastic vocals with catchy arrangements of guitar, mandolin, and accordion that draw from jazz, classical, folk, and pop influences. Inspired by artists such as Owen Pallett, the Barenaked Ladies, Joanna Newsom, the Beach Boys, The Decemberists, and the Punch Brothers, and forged from a sonically adventurous acoustic music scene on Canada’s west coast, West My Friend is proving to be a key part of a new generation of grassroots folk music. With performances ranging from the Edge of the World Music Festival to the West End Cultural Centre to the Copenhagen Folk Club and everywhere in between, West My Friend’s commitment to creating original indie-roots music always catches hold of audiences. The wealth of musical experience and classical training in the group creates an interesting backdrop for their songwriting, allowing for levels of detail, intricacy, and counterpoint balanced with moments of simplicity. Their diversity in taste and influences and a keen interest in both traditional sounds and innovation leads to constant exploration of new sounds that places them as a distinctive voice in the landscape between Canadian folk and indie-pop. Quiet Hum, produced by Canadian mainstay David Travers-Smith (Wailin’ Jennys, Pharis & Jason Romero) is the
third outing from West My Friend since the band formed at the turn of the decade. Its 2012 debut, Place, garnered several nominations, including “Roots Album of the Year” and “Song of the Year” at the Vancouver Island Music Awards. Its follow-up, 2014’s When The Ink Dries , was nominated for the Oliver Schroer “Pushing The Boundaries” Award at the Canadian Folk Music Awards and received the Readers’ Choice award for “Best New Sound of 2014” at Sleeping Bag Studios. With the release of Quiet Hum, the members of West My Friend build admirably on the body of work coming out of Victoria, Vancouver, and across British Columbia. Caravan gears up for peak of salmon cycle submitted Communities from Vancouver to the Adams River are preparing for the fourth annual celebration of wild salmon - our keystone species, which also marks the peak of the four-year Sockeye cycle. With ancient ceremonies and songs, we will call the wild salmon home to the rivers, lakes and streams of the Fraser Basin and Salish Sea Corridor. Following the theme of mermaids, which symbolize transformation, change and our close relationship to salmon, our art and cultural workshops are busily preparing community-engaged art for this year’s parades and programs. Starting in Vancouver with a parade on Saturday, Sept. 22, the 2018 Wild Salmon Caravan will travel to Chilliwack, Lillooet and Merritt and will finish with a parade in Chase on Saturday, Sept. 29. We invite people of all creeds and cultures to join us in our journey as we follow the Sockeye to their traditional spawning grounds. Caravan vision holder Dawn Morrison says, “The creative life-giving energy of regeneration and resiliency helps educate, inform, and transform the darkness surrounding the industrial storm endangering wild salmon. “ “We invite everyone to help raise awareness of the serious challenges facing wild salmon - from open net fish farms in the Broughton Archipelago to the impacts of deforestation, pipelines, rising water temperatures in the Fraser and Shuswap/Adams River watersheds and disasters like the Imperial Metals contamination of Quesnel Lake. “Wild salmon need us more than ever to honour and show gratitude for their generosity and powerful life-giving roles in our land and food systems and environment,” says Morrison. The Wild Salmon Caravan is led by the Working Group on Indigenous Food Sovereignty in partnership with more than 100 organizations (visit wildsalmoncaravan.ca for more information).
