Are you interested in getting your foundations Welding certification right here is Chase? Chase Secondary, in conjunction with TRU, is bringing the TRU trades trailer to our community from August 6 until February. The trailer can house 12 students and we currently have 3-4 spaces available. The cost of the program is the same as it would be at TRU but the trailer will be located right here in the community. Here is a short description of the program: Welder: Levels 1 and 2 (Foundation Program) Introductory program that prepares learners for entry level positions as apprentice welders in most sectors of the economy, including manufacturing, construction, transportation, resource extraction and resource development.

Students engage in a variety of classroom and shop activities. In the classroom, they learn theoretical principals of welding. Shop sessions provide the hands on opportunity to learn processes and master practical welding skills.

Legionnaires Care – for the Past, their Members and their Community

In November 1925, the Canadian Legion was founded by veterans for veterans in Winnipeg, Manitoba, as the Canadian Legion of the British Empire Services League, and was incorporated in 1926 by a special Act of Parliament.

It grew steadily through the 1930’s and expanded rapidly following World War II. In 1960, Queen Elizabeth II granted the Canadian organization royal patronage and hence, it became the Royal Canadian Legion.

Its mission is to serve Veterans, including current members of the military and RCMP and their families, to promote Remembrance, as well as to assist communities and the country.

At the 1925 formation of the Canadian Legion, the poppy was chosen as its national symbol of commemoration. In 1948, the Federal Government awarded the poppy trademark to the Royal Canadian Legion to protect its image from misuse. To this day, the emblematic poppy is restricted to remembrance under the legion’s authority.

Donations to the Poppy Trust Fund are all placed in trust and used to assist Veterans and their dependents in need and to honour their sacrifices.

There are currently 1,350 Legion branches nationally, served by nearly a quarter of a million members, comprising men and women veterans, associates, and affiliates—one of the largest volunteer bases in the country.

Legions exist in order that Canadians never forget.

The organization understands the importance of honouring

past sacrifices, remembering what was accomplished, and acknowledging the courage of those who served, and still serve today. It provides access to services for Veterans and their families at no cost—whether legion members or nonmembers.

Through Remembrance Day ceremonies, the Poppy Campaign, commemorative activities, and more, Legions contribute much to the national social order and engender respect for the past.

In addition, not-for-profit Legions assist seniors, provide youth programmes, raise funds from which they make generous donations, volunteer help—and offer a place to gather for fun and celebration.

Fortunately, the Village of Chase is home to an active and caring Royal Canadian Legion Branch 107, whose members generously influence community life in so many ways.

Founded in the early 1960’s, the local Legion now has 300 dedicated members, which include 40 Veterans.

Upon retiring from the RCMP, the present Legion President, Harry Danyluck, was eventually convinced by some Legionnaires to join the Chase branch—that was 28 fulfilling years ago for Harry.

“I’ve been involved with pretty much everything the Legion undertakes,” reports Harry, “and there’s such a good group of members to be involved with.

The camaraderie is as significant as the contributions we’re able to make individually and as part of the Legion.”

In light of his many years of duty and varied assistance to the Legion, he was honoured with a Life Membership within the organization. Harry used to mow the lawn and shovel snow at its site just because it needed doing, and for the exercise.

“Of all the activities I’m involved with,” he says, “my favourite is the meat draw.

Even when I was a member of Village Council and Mayor, I helped organize the meat draws.”

“And as with all the Legion’s fundraisers,” he goes on, “85% of the funds raised by the draw are donated to a community project or to a charity.”

The Chase Legion contributes financially to local community organizations, to veterans’ associations and their functions, to cadets, to the military, as well as providing bursaries for local high school students, all this capably managed by Legion 1st Vice President Susan Murray.

Longtime Chase Legion member and piper, John Angus, has a history with legions that began in his teen years in Scotland.

“My Dad was a piper with the Seaforth Highlanders in Scotland and taught me to play the bagpipes,” John relates. “I joined the town of Dingwall Royal British Legion pipe band in 1964 when I was 16 years of age, and at 18, was able to join the Legion.”

When asked what brought him to Canada, John smiles and replies with one word—”Love!”

“I came to Canada on a holiday in 1974 to Notch Hill,” he says, “and met the girl who would eventually be my wife during that trip. I returned three times after that and eventually immigrated to Canada in 1979, living in Notch Hill. I joined my first Canadian Legion at Salmon Arm in January 1980—and married that lady in September 1980.”

However, John’s bagpipe days would be suspended for several decades as he enjoyed a young person’s social life, worked fulltime, raised a family, and helped with household tasks. Spare time was in short supply.

Eventually, he joined the Chase Legion and when members there discovered he played the bagpipes, they asked if John would play at ceremonies. His legion musical contributions gradually expanded to barbecuing hamburgers every Friday evening, organizing colour parties and flagbearers for parades and events, poppy day activities, and candle light vigils—as with President Harry,

John is pretty much involved with all Legion events including Remembrance Day, the Vimy Ridge ceremony, Poppy Day, parades, and the Robbie Burns Day dinner.

One last point John brought up is that he’s looking for a local adult who is interested in learning to play the bagpipes—he’ll teach ‘em.. As he says with a grin, “I’m not as young as I used to be and need a replacement.”

Upcoming Legion events include a golf tournament on June 8th, and on July 20th, a Motorbike Poker Run which starts and finishes in Chase and is open to anyone with wheels, not just on motorcycles. A Poker Run travels through five local stops, such as Sicamous, Enderby, and Chase. At each stop, riders are given a playing card, and the rider with the best poker hand at the last stop (in Chase) is the

Council Highlights for the April 23, 2024 Regular Meeting submitted by Village of Chase

The Regular Meeting of Council was held on April 23, 2024 at the Village office and via Zoom.

15 people attended in-person and 9 people attended virtually. Councillor Stevens attended via Zoom.

Public Input on Current Agenda Items.

Members of the public spoke about various agenda items, including the installation of public washrooms and water rates.

Tom Mataseje – Mountain View Mobile Home Park - Highway Noise. Tom Matajese addressed Council regarding his repeated requests for noise mitigation. Mr. Mataseje has expressed that noise from Highway 1 increased following the raising of the speed limit from 60 to 80 km/h, the noise remains excessive without construction due to traffic, and the excavated cliff is intensifying the problem by reflecting sounds.

Sun Valley Housing Society. Members of the Sun Valley Housing Society addressed Council regarding water rates and the minimum consumption charge of 60 m3, expressing that the change will cause considerable hardship for its residents due to the magnitude of the increase.

Members also expressed concerns that because of the minimum consumption charge, efforts to reduce water consumption are no longer incentivized and costs are being unfairly passed on to seniors and low-use households.

Flushing in the Spring allows us to take advantage of snow melt water and helps us to flush our storm water system at the same time, removing sediments that build up over time.

Water used in flushing our water mains is de-chlorinated and repurposed for flushing catch basins, leads, mains and culverts.

Why are we flushing our water mains? The flushing program is conducted annually and provides the following benefits: • Improved water quality • Improved system hydraulic capacity • Improved system operation by identifying weak or problem areas • Improved/restored chlorine residual • Decrease turbidity within the system when large volumes of water are used in such cases as firefighting and bulk water use How does water main flushing affect your water?

During the flushing process, low pressures and discoloured water may be experienced for short periods. Any discolouration is temporary and is not a health hazard. Village staff collect and test water samples for chlorine residual throughout the entire distribution system regularly, by law, to ensure that the water is safe for consumption. If any discolouration is noticed, residents are asked to open their outdoor cold-water taps (after flushing hours) and allow it to flow until the water becomes clear.

It is important to note that even if flushing is not occurring directly on your street, the connecting streets in your area could be affected as well.
