he Chase area saw some 3800 residents receive their first COVID 19 Vaccination Shots during March and April at either the Chase Community Hall or the Art Holding Arena Clinics. Interior Health Authority, as per Ministry of Health anticipate the 2nd round of COVID 19 Vaccinations will take place approximately mid to late July, 2021.

Many many members of the Chase area community expressed admiration and gratitude for being able to attend a local Vaccination Clinic, rather than having to travel to either Kamloops or Salmon Arm. The Interior Health Authority / Chase Health Centre Teams received hundreds of compliments about how well organized, positive and upbeat the Chase COVID 19 Vaccination Clinics was, especially

with all the volunteer helpers.

The Chase & District Health Services Foundation volunteers are extremely proud of the efforts of the Nurses, Doctors, and Staff of both the Interior Health Authority and the Chase Health Centre for their above and beyond commitment to ensuring that our local C h a s e Vaccination Clinics were a positive, successful experience.

We had Nu rs e s t r av e l l i n g daily, even on their days off, to attend and help out at the Chase COVID 19 Vaccination Clinics.

KUDOS to Interior Health and the Chase Health Centre COVID Vaccination Clinic Teams, and a great big Thank You to all the Clinic volunteers.

When his father immigrated from Greece to Canada, Dad undertook what many Greeks did and opened a dining spot, ultimately owning popular Grecian eateries for most of his life. Pete liked what he saw growing up in and around restaurants, and having his own seemed like a natural career move—that and setting up in his hometown village meant that Pete’s Pizza & Pasta opened here in 2008. And its eventual move into the village’s business core has resulted in a loyal customer base drawn from the Village and the entire Shuswap area, including some regulars from Kamloops and Salmon Arm. Obviously, this keen cook’s reputation for good food has become quite well known.

Everything on the restaurant’s menu is made from scratch—the sauces, the dough, salad dressings, even the bread

used in its garlic toast. Taking a page from his Dad’s cookbook, Pete prepares handmade dishes with fine ingredients using recipes handed down through his family. After much culinary R&D experimentation in his kitchen, a new product he’s recently introduced is a gluten-free cauliflower pizza crust—a tasty alternative to the usual wheat-based crust.

In addition to pastas and pizza, this food outlet’s bill of fare has grown to include tasty chicken wings, baby back ribs, cheese sticks, meatballs ‘n mozza, and Greek salads. And on Friday’s and Saturday’s, Pete’s Pizza serves up various specials, such as flavourful calzones with a hand-made eight-inch pizza crust, a choice of toppings, and cheese, folded over, ovenbaked, and brushed with garlic, butter, parmesan cheese, and Italian seasonings. Delicious and different!

Other Greek treats will soon find their way onto weekend menus as well.

Along with topnotch customer service, contributing to the community is another aspect of the business philosophy of Pete, wife Megan, and their staff, whether that be to the foodbank or local charities.

Ingredients 1/3 cup lime juice 2 teaspoons sugar 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 beef top sirloin steak (1 inch thick /1 lb) 1-1/2 teaspoons pepper 3/4 teaspoon salt 2 tbsp unsalted dry roasted peanuts, chopped 3 cups hot cooked brown rice Directions In a small bowl, mix lime juice, sugar and garlic until blended; set aside. Cut steak into 2x1x3/4-in. pieces; toss with pepper and salt.

Thread beef onto four metal or soaked wooden skewers.

Grill kabobs, covered, over medium heat or broil 4 in. from heat 2-4 minutes on each side or until beef reaches desired doneness. Add peanuts to sauce; serve with kabobs and rice.

Coffee and the News

We are in anxious times. Things seem to be changing so quickly. A few weeks ago our province was beginning to open up, COVID cases were steady, and the weather was improving. But now we face tougher restrictions, a growing number of COVID variants of concern, and an uncertain season before us.

The news seems to change every day; recommendations and geo-political realities mutate seemingly before our eyes and these changes flood us with anxiety.

Change happens, we could say that change is a part of living, but this change brings so much anxiety into our lives. We feel the ripples of these changes not just in our political lives or social lives, but also within the core of who we are. We lose sleep over what we can’t control.

And this is because the news has become central to our lives. 19th century philosopher Georg Hegel once wrote that, “Reading the morning newspaper is the realist’s morning prayer.” When we’re honest—whether we agree with Hegel or not— this is the reality that many of us live out. How often do we, even those of us who confess faith in God, start our mornings and end our days with broadcast news or the scroll of a news feed on our smart phones. How much time do we devote to the news compared to the things we consider of ultimate importance?

Engaging with the news is like caffeine. I have long been someone who loves a good cup of coffee. In controlled amounts and at particular times coffee is enjoyable and can even make life better (who doesn’t enjoy being a little more awake?). But consumed without awareness and reflection it is uncomfortable and can even diminish our quality of life. As a 21 year old, I once decided to make myself a whole pot of coffee at 10 p.m. Not only did I rob myself of the enjoyment of that coffee, but I also consumed so much caffeine that my hands shook and I could feel my heart racing.

Being aware of the world around us helps us live appropriately, being overly aware can leave us overwhelmed and paralyzed with anxiety.

What then are we to do? We can’t remove ourselves from the events of our world, we can’t ignore the realities of our world, our country, and our community, but we also can’t lose our past and our futures to the events of today.

Just like with my pot of coffee, we need to be aware of the ‘clock’ and have limits on our consumption.

This is why the grand narratives of our lives come into play. Different traditions and perspectives hold to different stories, but these stories remind us of what ‘time’ it is and remind us of where we have been and where we are going. These narratives provide a big picture context that keep our consumption of the news in focus and reminds us of what truly matters.

For me, as a follower of Jesus, I need to understand life and our world as shaped by the narrative of the Bible, a narrative that centres on Jesus of Nazareth. I have to ask not just if this particular news item seems important to me now, but does it seem to matter against who I know Jesus to be? If I truly believe in this story, then the stories of today should foster different responses: sometimes trust, sometimes compassion and action, and sometimes apathy (after all what is the real importance of the latest celebrity gossip?).

Consuming the news with these grand narratives in mind means that some stories will be revealed as being shallow, fleeting and even silly, while others will come to have deeper meaning and lasting significance as they are viewed in the context of life through the lens of eternity.

Coffee is a delicious treat that energizes and awakens. The news is a helpful tool that informs and provides valuable perspective.

But when we don’t have our eye on the clock and our whole selves embedded in a larger story (particularly in times of upheaval) these good things will leave us jittery and anxious. When we keep our eyes on the eternal realities, the realities of the news cycle come into clearer focus.

Invasive Plant Workshops Press Release

CSISS is hosting free online workshops next month!

Covering a broad range of topics, these workshops aim to facilitate learning and inspire action to protect biodiversity in the Columbia Shuswap region.

In honor of Invasive Species Action Month, the Columbia Shuswap Invasive Species Society will be hosting two Invasive Plant Identification and Management workshops and one webinar focused on native plants and pollinators.

You can register for the events here.

On May 5th learn to identify key invasive plants that are often found along trails and in recreation areas in the Columbia Shuswap region.

This workshop is especially applicable to trail stewardship groups, park and recreation area users, Indigenous Peoples, trail builders, and trail users of all kinds! Topics covered include invasive plant identification, best management practices for reducing the spread of invasive plants, control options and reporting.

High priority invasive plants with yellow flowers will be the focus of the workshop on May 27th.

On May 19th, join and guest speakers to learn about

how you can support plantpollinator relationships in your garden. CSISS will be speaking about the PlantWise program, which encourages gardeners to choose noninvasive and native plants for their gardens. Brenda Beckwith and Valerie Huff will be presenting Pollination Networking for Your Garden: Tips and strategies for enhancing gardens to build habitat and connectivity with the greater pollination network that surrounds.
