T
he Chase Lions club would like to thank all the volunteers who stepped up to help with the Easter Egg’stravaganza on Sunday, April 17th, especially the Chase Fire Dept for their services both leading the parade and in creating the Firefighter Challenge. This event was a super successful day. We hunted for 10000 eggs before commencing with the games. There was a photo booth, fishpond, egg toss, potato sack race, egg
on a spoon, egg mini golf, a prize wheel, the Firefighter Challenge course, crafts, face painting, S’more making, and we cooked and gave out 312 hotdogs. A super fun day was had by all ages, young and old alike. To everyone that attended, thank you for supporting our community event. The Chase Lions Club has always served this community and will continue to do so with your support. Thank you.

Chase and Area Young Learners Society 2nd Annual
A PASTORAL PERSPECTIVE: Turn off That Screen
Mothers Day Plant Sale Fundraiser May 6 & 7 TRU Hardware
by Tyler Harper, Pastor at Chase Evangelical Free Church As a parent of young children, it isn’t uncommon in our house to hear the dreaded four words — “turn off that screen”— followed by moans and complaining. Most of us know that over use of screens isn’t a good thing for kids. Sitting in Intro to Psychology, I learned that children learn and develop through play — the whole of the child grows through play, but when screen time replaces play time young children can be developmentally delayed. Over stimulated brains and under stimulated bodies can have lasting consequences. Technology brings fantastic opportunities to communicate, explore, learn, and relate in new ways. Throughout the pandemic I have been so grateful to be able to continue relationships with those near and far whether it is by phone calls, video chats, or even simply text messages and emails. But the gifts produced by technology also assume certain responsibilities and elicit subtle dangers – and not just for those in short pants. In the words of that great philosopher, Spiderman (or at least Spiderman’s Uncle Ben), “with great power comes great responsibility.” I am sure I am not the only one who has found myself unaware of those around me, those who I love and am devoted to, with my focus instead on some video, animation, or chat. If we will stop and pay attention, I think that we will all notice that at times the blessings of these ‘virtual’ forms of communication remove us from the flesh and blood forms that we crave and that we were created for. The Christian faith teaches that we are created body, mind, and spirit. At times we engage one part of our selves more than others: reading this article engages more of the mind, shoveling the driveway engages more of the body. The temptation of technology is a new form of an ancient error. The temptation to focus on our mental life at the expense of the physical can be traced back to the
writing of ancient Greek philosophers. In our virtual age we can easily forget about the physical aspects of life, particularly in relationships. At times our interpersonal connections have been reduced to screens and voices in order to keep others safe or maintain relationships with loved ones who live far away. These interactions can be lifegiving and important, but they do not resemble a fully human connection— to be together as humans: body, mind, and spirit. But sometimes, those four dreaded words aren’t just for kids. Sometimes, us adults need to also turn off our screens. There are times we need to remember that we aren’t just minds, that to be connected to other people means that we need to be with other people. As C.S. Lewis shows us in his novel That Hideous Strength, it is dangerous to think of ourselves as only a brain, and this thinking denies the deepest reality of what it means to be human. In the original text of the Bible the word that we translate as ‘church’ in English directly means ‘the gathered’ — a physical reality— because life isn’t only in our heads. We are made for relationships and relationships aren’t just between minds, but include the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. This means that while we should be grateful for the blessing of being able to keep in touch with physically distant friends and family, we also can’t deny our need to be with other persons, other bodies. As the weather warms and the pressure on society changes, we can’t forget our need to connect with others— other minds, other bodies, other spirits. Friends, let’s turn off those screens when we can and let’s enjoy being with other humans, other bodies, other minds, other spirits. It is the human thing to do. Obituary Rosemarie Yerbury Foster 1940-2022
Rosemarie Yerbury Foster recently passed away in her home in Kamloops, BC from natural causes. She was a longtime resident of Pritchard BC, and more recently Langley BC. She was pre-deceased by her husband George, her parents Ivy Lorraine (aka “Dolly”) and Fredrick Charles; as well as her sister Florence Elizabeth Jane. In her immediate family she is survived by her brother Frederick (aka “Fred”); and her daughters Patricia and Candice. She is also survived by her extended Yerbury family and her husband’s family throughout the interior of BC, the lower mainland of Vancouver (so many amazing people to name here!) who all have wonderful memories of her generous spirit and her talented hand at crafts and landscape painting. She was a big Tenors fan, John Wayne movie-loving, dedicated knitter who was also especially known for her amazing whipped shortbread at Christmas; and her summertime homemade raspberry jam and “mustard pickles”. We would like to thank her dedicated family and friends who helped her in her old age as her health declined and their understanding when times were difficult for her. As per her wishes there will be no service and we would generally encourage her friends and family to commemorate her by sharing their memories in ways that are meaningful to them.

Page 11 • April 22nd, 2022 • Chase Sunflower Obituary Clarice Helena Davidson Clarice Helena Davidson, beloved wife of John Watson, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Kamloops Royal Inland Hospital on April 12, 2022. Helena will not be soon forgotten. She was adventurous, fun loving, always surrounded by friends, and led a life full of courage, compassion, thoughtfulness, spirituality and understanding. Her life journey took her in many directions, transforming her into a farmer’s wife, a theatre director, a mother, a backwoods pioneer, a scholar, a hippie, and a well-known social worker (though not necessarily in that order). Helena was born in Calgary on September 24, 1941. She attended Western Canada High School and in her late teens she was given the opportunity to visit relatives in the Isle of Man and England. This was a seminal experience for her, and she maintained close family ties throughout her life on both sides of the Atlantic. After high school, Helena married Henry (Hank) Jonker, and together they raised two wonderful children, Ann, and Lawrence. During this time, Helena followed Hank on many adventures, ranging from chasing cattle in the Alberta foothills, to hog farming in the Fraser Valley and on the Alberta prairies, and to many years of city life in Calgary. In the 1980s Helena re-invented herself. With the children older and the marriage over, she followed both her intellectual and altruistic impulses and put herself through university to obtain a master’s degree in social work. This led her to a career in the area of eating disorders, working at the Vancouver General Hospital. Her successful methods were shared and used by many others in Canada and elsewhere. In Vancouver she met John Watson, and they were soon married in a beautiful ceremony that brought family together from across the country and from England. These were good times, and as well as being in love and experiencing a burgeoning career, Helena reignited her passion for the theatre, which she had studied in her youth under the Calgary thespian icon, Betty Mitchel. She was involved in numerous productions in the Vancouver area. In the 90’s Helena and John moved to Seymour Arm, a small town on the north end of the Shuswap lakes where they were among the handful of people who lived there year-round. Helena and John became a backbone of the community, providing friendship to all and services to many, and Helena became famous for launching, producing, and directing the widely acclaimed annual Christmas theatrical production! During this time, Helena became a grandmother. From the time he was born, visiting his grandma at the lake became an annual summer event for Austin. In 2018, John and Helena moved to Chase where, even in their late 70’s they were able to meet and establish new friendships and become a part of the community. As well as always being very close to her children, throughout her life Helena kept close ties with her own parents, Bill and Betty Davidson, from whom she received much support and guidance. DONKEY REFUGE OPENING FOR VISTORS AFTER 2 year COVID closure Turtle Valley, BC, April 14, 2022 – The Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge is hosting their Volunteer Day on April 23, 2022 to celebrate the re-opening of the Refuge to visitors. Founder Shirley Mainprize hopes “to see new and old friends here to helps us get the Refuge ready for our visitor season. We’d love help with painting, gardening, tidying the yards during this day where we invite everyone out to the Refuge.” Mainprize noted participants are encouraged to wear work clothes and pack a lunch. She is hoping to recruit some new faces for donkey grooming, gardening & to help with future events. “The Memorial Garden is one of our big projects this year, and we do have a few volunteers on board for planning, building, and plant care, but we are hoping there may be more people looking for an opportunity to get outside, make new friends and lend a helping hand.” Following Volunteer Day, the Refuge
will be open for Donkey Visits on weekends starting April 30th. Visitors can expect to be able to drop-in on the weekend anytime Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM. For those c on c e r n e d about social distancing, or just looking for a quieter day, Tu e s d a y s are available to be prebooked for up to 15 guests during a 2-hour visiting block. “We wanted to give visitors a chance to see the donkeys during the week, and our new Quiet Tuesday helps us to accommodate any guests who might be worried about a crowd,” notes Mainprize.
This year the Donkey Refuge is also offering a new program for Seniors which is partially funded by the New Horizons for Seniors, a grant from the Government of Canada. The “Grandma/ Grandpa & Me – All About D o n k e y s Program” is for a senior and a youth to come out to the Refuge together and learn the basics of Donkey Care & Grooming. The program, Saturdays May 14th, 28th & June 11th, includes donkey care class, a delicious vegetarian lunch, as well as an optional walk with the Donkeys in the afternoon.
