The Secwépemc Landmarks project team proposed at the following locations: Salmon is honoured to announce the unveiling of the Arm wharf (Complete); Haney Heritage Tsqúqw7e Landmark sculpture on Saturday (May 2023); Little Mountain (June 2023); Fly May 13th 2023, at 1 pm in Tsqúqw7e (Chase Hills Skyview Rotary Lookout (July 2023); Memorial Park). The Tsqúqw7e Landmark South Canoe Bluffs (August 2023); Tappen was created by the late Mike “Savage” Peters, Bluffs (September 2023); Bastion Mountain assisted by his son Lone White Wolf Peters (October 2023). Village of Chase Employment Opportunity Temporary Labourer - Public Works A temporary employment opportunity exists in Public Works for a Labourer for approximately 6 months.

The Temporary Labourer will report to and work directly under the guidance of the current Team Lead Hand. They are responsible for performing a variety of unskilled and routine semi-skilled manual construction and maintenance tasks that may occasionally involve considerable physical effort and agility. Weekend work may also be required.

Main duties include: • The performance of a variety of labour-intensive work including heavy outdoor manual tasks • Performs a variety of parks and cemetery tasks including but not limited to picking up litter, pulling weeds, cutting brush, raking leaves, watering grass, watering flower baskets, operating manual mowing equipment and weed trimmers, and assisting in the maintenance of gardening plots • Cleaning of culverts and drainage ditches as required • The performance of routine repairs and maintenance to street pavement, boulevards, street signs • Uses hand tools for routine repairs and maintenance and changing of equipment attachments • Assists with grave digging, installation of headstones, trench digging, backfilling • Cleans up after construction projects or around buildings, easements, clearing and sorting salvage material as required Education/Experience/Qualifications • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean abstract (air brake endorsement considered an asset) • Three years’ experience with sound knowledge of materials, methods, tools, equipment, practices and standards of public works • Confident with sound judgement • Ability to maintain records, make written and oral reports to co-workers and supervisor • Must be able to deal tactfully and professionally with the public, other staff members and elected officials • Maintains an excellent quality of service and high degree of accuracy in their work The complete job description is available upon request from the Director of Corporate Operations.

Village of Chase – Emergency Preparedness Public Information Day

The Village of Chase along with Emergency Preparedness staff from the TNRD and the City of Kamloops will be hosting an information session on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the pocket park in downtown Chase.

A large amount of information will be available including: What are individuals’ responsibilities in an emergency and how can YOU prepare?

What are the Village’s responsibilities in an emergency?

What supports and plans are currently in place?

Who does what and when?

Emergency Social Services – ESS During an emergency event, Emergency Social Services provide short term support for anyone evacuated from their place of residence and have no alternate place to stay.

Are you interested in volunteering in an ESS program in Chase in the event of an emergency? The Village of Chase with help from the City of Kamloops ESS Coordinator will have information available about what is ESS, why is it important, and how you can get involved!

RCMP REPORT Submitted by Chase RCMP

VEHICLE FIRE On April 1st, 2023 at 6:42 am, Chase RCMP were advised of a vehicle fire in the Lordco parking lot in Chase. Chase Fire Department had the blaze under control before Police arrived. The vehicle a white GMC Jimmy - was serving as the owner’s primary residence. When the fire started, the owner was asleep in the driver’s seat. A noise woke him, and he managed to escape. However, he was unable to save any of his belongings.

A kind neighbour gave him shoes. The cause of the fire has not been determined. Anyone with information regarding the fire is asked to call the Chase RCMP Detachment at 250679-3221. File number 2023-694 refers.

ASSIST AMBULANCE On April 1st, 2023 at 8:34 pm, Chase RCMP were requested to assist BC Ambulance Service with a patient who required transport to hospital. Paramedics had concerns for their own safety, based on the male’s past behaviour, and required Police to ride in the ambulance during transport to Kamloops.

STOLEN AND RECOVERED TRUCK On April 3rd, 2023 at 1:49 am, Chase RCMP were advised of a stolen vehicle. The caller reported that a Dodge Pickup was just stolen from Alymer Road. Police learned that the vehicle required repairs to a seized wheel bearing. Police noticed fresh tire tracks on the road and followed those tracks directly to the stolen vehicle, which now had a seized wheel bearing and flat tire. One unhappy male, who is known to Police, was arrested at the vehicle. He was subsequently released

on an Undertaking with a court date and conditions which included a curfew.

IMPAIRED DRIVER On April 15th, 2023 at 3:07 pm, Chase RCMP received a report of a possible impaired driver leaving an establishment in Chase. The caller reported that he watched a man stumble to his vehicle and drive away.

The caller phoned 911 and followed the vehicle, providing updates to the dispatcher until Police were able to intercept. In speaking with the driver, Police noted he had symptoms of impairment by alcohol, including glossy eyes and slurred speech.

The driver was required to provide samples of his breath into a roadside screening device. The breath samples produced ‘fail’ readings which indicated his ability to drive was impaired by alcohol. He was therefore prohibited from driving for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

CONTROLLED BURN On April 20th, 2023 at 12:29 pm, Chase RCMP were dispatched to a dropped 911 call near Neskonlith Lake. On route, Police learned a man had been burned and required an ambulance. At the scene Police were told that the man had been conducting a controlled burn on his property when his own clothing caught fire. There was no water on hand and the man’s injuries were quite serious. Adams Lake Fire Department attended and worked for hours to control and extinguish the fire.

CURFEW BREACH On April 19th, 2023 at 4:50 am, Chase RCMP conducted a curfew check at a residence in Chase.

The subject was not at home and was therefore not in compliance with his release conditions.

On April 20th, 2023, Kirklen Petkau-Desjardin was charged with one count of Fail to Comply with Undertaking and remains in custody.

His next court appearance is May 1/23.

DAMAGE TO SORRENTO PARK On April 19th, 2023, Chase RCMP were advised of ongoing issues at the Sorrento Blind Bay Park. On several occasions park equipment was purposely damaged, including smashed lights, overturned picnic tables and damage to washrooms. Video surveillance captured images of several people at the park between the hours of 11:30 pm and 3:00 am on multiple occasions. They are suspected to be teenagers and were on foot. Chase RCMP will be increasing patrols of the area.

BREAK AND ENTER On April 19th, 2023 at 3:20 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a residential break and enter in Chase. The caller reported his door was pried open and many belongings were missing. The missing items included expensive jewelry, ID’s, passports, and electronics. Police attended and conducted an investigation which resulted in the identification of a suspect. The following day, Police arrested a 34 year old man from Kamloops for break and enter and theft. He was released on an Undertaking with a future court date. All of the missing belongings were located by Police and returned to the homeowner.

FIGHT AT THE BEACH On April 23rd, 2023 at 2:12 am, Chase RCMP received a 911 call from a female teenager reporting that she was being chased by another teenager, with a knife, after a fight at the Chase beach. Police responded and found the caller safe at home. The circumstances surrounding the fight are still under investigation. Chase RCMP are requesting that witnesses to the fight please contact the Chase RCMP Detachment at 250-679-3221. File number 2023-895.

UPDATE: DAMAGE TO BUSINESS On February 8th, 2023 Chase RCMP were advised of mischief to a bathroom at a business in Chase. A considerable amount of damage was done for no apparent reason.

With assistance from the public, a suspect was identified. On March 23rd, 2023, Alfred James Chouinard of Chase was charged with Mischief Under $5000.

Citizens on Patrol – Contributing and Caring

It has been said it takes a village to raise a child.

To that could be added it takes a community to preserve and protect a safe place to live.

The Citizens on Patrol (COP) organization translates that belief into action.

The main goals of COP are: • Deterrence through observation, documentation, and reporting, as a presence in communities • Education of volunteer members • Increase awareness of suspicious, unusual, or dangerous activities.

• The safety of well-trained members • Enjoyment for its dedicated volunteers— taking short breaks, chatting with other patrollers, socializing Chase COP has been functioning for many years, indeed for decades, serving the Village from the May long weekend to Halloween, followed by the Chase Country Christmas event.

President Joan Anderson has been a member of Citizens on Patrol for 17 years. When she joined, the local group consisted of 40 volunteers. Currently there are only about 11, with an additional three members in process.

Joan advises that 25 are required. COP members age out at 80 years, and as with other segments of society and the workplace, many elderly Baby Boomers are retiring—from jobs and from contributing to causes they enjoy.

With enough volunteers, members put in just four hours a month—however, the present limited number has resulted in doubling that time commitment and, unfortunately, also a decreased presence in the community.

COP President Joan reports that, in fact, there was considerably more criminal activity in the past than at present. Unfortunately, incidents posted on today’s social media are inaccurate and often do not reflect what actually may have taken place—thereby misrepresenting the local crime scene.

With regard to the reduction in street crime, in addition to the work of COP, the efforts of groups such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and their message have made a difference—as have the penalties, fines, and substantial increase in insurance rates if a driver is found to be behind the wheel while impaired by alcohol or drugs and charged. As well, a criminal record is known to lead to an extremely difficult life for the perpetrator. The prevalence of security cameras at residences and business may also have acted as deterrents to theft.

COP commitments consist of vehicle patrols, foot patrols, as well as speed and cell phone watches. At least twice a shift, its members traverse every street and alley in Chase.

Volunteers are also a presence at community events such as Canada Day, Music on the Lake, and Cornstock. As additional ears and eyes for the RCMP, their efforts can prevent crime as well as eliminate suspects.

President Joan advises that it is essential to remove all visible valuables from vehicles and lock them. Criminals will not spend time trying to enter a locked car or truck. It’s the unlocked ones that provide money and/or items to be stolen.

Although the day-to-day operations of Chase Citizens on Patrol are directly supervised by the local RCMP detachment, COP is not designed to replace policing, but rather it allows police officers to concentrate their services on areas of potential crime.

Support of COP takes many forms within the community. In the past, ICBC and Sunflower Bicycle Repair have sponsored a large bicycle safety programme. Aylmer Road Storage provides gratis storage space for the organization. Meetings at 7:00 pm on the second Tuesday of each month, April to November, are held free of charge at the Sunshore Golf Clubhouse, complete with coffee provided for attendees. As well, residents of

the Chabalos community in Chase generously save all their bottles and cans for COP to cash in twice a week, May to October. Each of the foregoing assists with the significant services provided by this important community group.

Volunteers state that the appreciation of the community and the sense of giving back to the village are particularly rewarding, as is the camaraderie amongst COP members. Likeminded individuals, accomplishing something that is needed, not only sustain the town, but also support one another.

COP qualifications and responsibilities are: • volunteers 19 years of age or older • resident of Chase or Chase business owner • be of good character • pass security screening through RCMP Criminal Record Check • commit to the prevention of unlawful activity in Chase • be able to contribute a minimum of four hours each month to the COP activity of choice • participate fully in all training sessions • follow all COP policies and procedures which includes upholding strict confidentiality • maintain a positive and respectful presence in the community Further information is available through the Chase RCMP (250.679.3221), by contacting Joan Anderson at 250.320.7472, and at the Chase Visitor Centre (250.670.8432 - 400 Shuswap Avenue) where COP applications are available.

The Rotary Food Drive held on Saturday April 22 was very successful. Our community of Chase is always so generous in helping those in need. We collected over 1300 pounds of food for the Chase Hamper Society. Thank you to Maureen Macdonald and the Hamper Society volunteers, and to the Chase Rotary members for picking up the bags!

Garbage Drop-Off Site at Curling Club Parking Lot

Please note that a garbage drop-off site is now available at the Chase Curling Rink parking lot (227 Willson Street). While the garbage truck is broken, residents and businesses can drop off garbage in sealed/ tied black garbage bags in large bins provided at the site.

For those who are unable to lift bags into large bins, designated areas are located near the bins to drop off garbage bags. Residents are also encouraged to consider neighbours who may not be able to take garbage to the temporary transfer site at the Curling Rink. Only garbage is currently accepted, and residents are asked to hang on to recycling until repairs are completed or further information is provided.

We apologize for the service interruption and appreciate your patience. Repairs to the garbage truck are being completed as quickly as possible.
