Senator George Stuart Nixon circa 1940

Rich in History The Nixon Mansion was built in 1907 on land purchased from U.S. Senator Francis Newlands by U.S. Senator George S. Nixon - five years before he died. Senator Nixon amassed his fortune from the ground up, starting at an entry position in banking. His business partner was George Wingfield, a renowned developer in Reno’s history. In 1920, the Mansion was purchased by Dr. William Johnston and his wife – daughter of U.S. Senator Francis Newlands and granddaughter of Senator William Sharon. In the last years of her life, Mrs. Johnston managed the Palace Hotel in San Francisco that she inherited from Senator Sharon. When the Mansion was built it had 33 rooms that included 11 bedrooms, 7.5 baths and 7 fireplaces. It was one of the first early homes in Reno to have an elevator. In the mid 1970s, the property was purchased by a physician who had his sights of moving his medical practice to this historic property. However, a devastating fire in 1979 rendered the home uninhabitable. In 2002 the home was purchased by its present owner who dedicated ten heartfelt and painstaking years to redesign and rebuild what is without question a landmark estate that overflows with time-honored history, characteristic architecture and classic elegance and grace.

Reno &Lake Tahoe

Close to Lake Tahoe, the Reno area is bursting with economic renaissance, welcoming numerous well-established companies to its business-friendly environment.

Reno Highlights

Tahoe Highlights

Reno is located 39.53 latitude and -119.81 longitude and is situated at elevation 4,400 feet above sea level. It’s population of 225,221 makes it the 3rd biggest city in Nevada. It is 180 miles from San Francisco via Interstate 80. Nestled at the base of the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains, Reno bills itself as “The Biggest Little City in the World”. Formerly known for gaming at many casinos, its popularity has shifted to emphasis on the arts, a resort-like experience in its major hotels, special events and is a gateway for all kinds of outdoor adventures, from climbing the mountains, to camping, fishing and boating in the Truckee Meadows/Lake Tahoe region.

Within 40 minutes of Reno, Lake Tahoe is North America’s largest alpine lake, measuring 12 miles wide, 22 miles long and 72 miles around. It is the third deepest lake in the world with an average depth of 989 feet and is two- thirds in California and one-third in Nevada. Its capacity is 122,000,000 acre-feet, enough to cover the state of California with more than one foot of water.

Reno offers a Philharmonic Orchestra, Nevada Opera, Nevada Ballet, Reno Chamber Orchestra and the accredited Nevada Museum of Art. It is also home to the University of Nevada Reno. With a strong Western spirit all its own, the Biggest Little City offers wonderful farmers’ markets, great restaurants, and the annual event of Hot August Nights followed by the Great Reno Balloon Race in September, both big draw for both tourists and locals. Nearby Historic Virginia City takes one back to pioneer days of the silver mines. The Reno Tahoe International Airport, serving the Northern Nevada and Lake Tahoe/Truckee area, continues to increase its direct service destinations.

Because of several decades of stringent growth and development ordinances, the lake remains 99.7 percent pure. The average surface temperature of the water varies from 41º in winter to 68º in summer and never freezes. The forecast for Lake Tahoe’s weather is 84% chance of sunshine in any Season. With low humidity, average winter temperatures are 40-50º and 70-75º in the summer. Although snowfall fluctuates from year to year, average is 350 inches. Tahoe’s many recreational activities include golfing, hiking, swimming, boating, fishing, camping, sailing, biking and horseback riding. And in the winter, Lake Tahoe proves its reputation as one of the world’s finest year-round playgrounds with America’s highest concentration of ski resorts (14), including Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows, Northstar California, Heavenly Valley, Sugar Bowl, Diamond Peak and Kirkwood. In addition, the Tahoe region, including Truckee, California, is known for its restaurants, art galleries, shopping and bistros.
