Grateful to Give Thanksgiving is not only a time to be grateful but a time to help those that may be struggling. This season has been particularly tough for many people and that has not been lost on us. There have been unprecedented raging wildfires, hurricanes, tropical storms and of course, a pandemic. Working together our teams have looked for ways to bring comfort and hope to those in need both near and far.

while Manhattanville Dining Services initiated a clothing drive to help our world neighbors in Central America who lost so much to Hurricane Eta. Locally on our campuses we continue to find ways to fight food insecurity, filling food pantries, working with our partners and donating food to individuals and families in need.

In this season of giving thanks, I’d like to take this time to thank our partners, guests and associates for their continued support. I am grateful for your partnership and all that we have achieved together these past few months. I wish you all a wonderful holiday season and hope the stories found on the following pages warm your heart as much as they did mine.

We’re banding together to fill our pantries and fight food insecurity on campus. Beyond stocking the shelves with staples and snacks, creative collaborators are finding more ways to help feed the hungry.

* With so many students on campus struggling with food * Chartwells’ associates at Lamar insecurity, for World Food Day team MSU Dining collected and donated more than 700 canned goods to the student food pantry. Way to go!

TEXAS WOMAN’S UNIVERSITY

* To help combat food insecurity, Pioneer Dining at Texas

Woman’s joined forces with TWU CARE (Campus Alliance for Resource Education) for a frozen food program. Leftover food from the dining hall is packaged, labeled with reheating instructions, frozen and delivered weekly to the CARE center.

It’s then distributed to students in need. This program provides an average of 25 to 40 meals per week, supporting the campus community and reducing food waste.

TEXAS WOMAN’S UNIVERSITY

University wanted to give back to their local community while also inviting guests to participate. To help feed the hungry, Lamar students could buy pre-packaged donation bags at their Market C-Stores, which include non-perishables and healthy snacks. They could even pay for them with what was left on their declining meal-plan balances. So far 75 bags have been donated! It’s a win-win all the way!

The WSU Dining Pantry is now open! Inspired by their partnership with the local food pantry on campus, the WSU Dining team decided to open a well-stocked “cupboard” for their team. To fill the shelves, extra food and beverage items nearing expiration were shifted in. The catering team also offered extra storage space and a cooler. Along with ready-to-eat items, there are toiletries, toilet paper, laundry detergent and more. Everyone on the team is encouraged to use it and donate items if they’d like. So far, it’s been a hit.

Comforting Tradition

Buffalo State Dining Services partnered with the FeedMore WNY Foundation to help offer dignity, hope and a brighter future for area residents. FeedMore WNY provides nutritious food, friendship, and skills training to WNY neighbors in need. The Buffalo State team donated more than 1,295 pounds of extra product for their Meals on Wheels and The Food Bank of WNY programs!

It’s comforting to think that in a year where everything is different, some things do stay the same. Continuing with tradition, the on-site bakery at UW-La Crosse is again donating 50 homemade pies to the La Crosse Community Thanksgiving

Dinner. An annual tradition that began in 1982, everyone is invited to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner at no cost. It will be a little different this year, as no one will be gathering. But dinners will be delivered, and it is still being run by volunteers – showcasing the best of their community. UWL Dining Services is humbled and honored to be a part of it once again.

KEENE STATE COLLEGE

Heaping Baskets Full Associates at Keene State Dining are eagerly participating in the 34th Annual KSC Thanksgiving Basket Drive. Keene State Dining associates traditionally fill from three to 10 heaping baskets with much-needed canned and dry goods.

Last year, Keene State College collectively contributed more than 60 baskets of nutritious food to the Keene Community Kitchen, which helps families in New Hampshire’s Monadnock region.

The University of Pittsburgh and Chartwells teamed up with community organizations to distribute 5,000 food boxes to individuals and families across Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Pitt Dining team initiated the community outreach and assisted in meal coordi- B O X E S nation and distribution distributed! to help those in need.

Each fall semester, SUNY Plattsburgh Campus Dining associates donate $20 to wear jeans on Fridays knowing that all money raised will go to charities in surrounding areas throughout the school year.

“Working with Sysco and other local partners and community groups has been an amazing opportunity to get support directly to our local communities,” says Senior Executive Chef Danielle Gallaway.

A partnership between the USDA and farmers, food processors and others, this program provides Americans with access to wholesome food during the COVID-19 national emergency. More than 1 million boxes have already been distributed.

SUNY Plattsburgh’s first week of November was filled with giving. Friday “Jean Day” money raised $250 for the Campus Food Pantry. They also donated $200 to Project Help, which provides food vouchers to local grocery stores for area families that are struggling.

In addition, they purchased $350 in toys and clothing for county children in need.

Weathering Storms When disaster strikes, there is no way to prepare for the devastation. But by banding together, Chartwells’ associates brought hope, donations and comfort to those in need.

SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY

MANHATTANVILLE COLLEGE

Hope and Hydration Clothing Drive Spartan Eats proudly executed a “Love, Spartan Eats” event. The Spartan Eats staff bagged 1,000 respite bags of goodies and delivered them to students.

Most were sequestered in their dorm rooms due to not only the pandemic but multiple wildfires burning within 100 miles of the campus, making the air quality outside toxic. The respite bags included Aquafina, Voss water, Rockstar Energy Drink, homemade cookies and a fruit cup. In addition to helping students on campus, San Jose State opened its housing to the local UC Santa Cruz students displaced by one of the major wildfires.

On November 4th, Hurricane Eta struck Central America leaving thousands devastated. Many families lost their loved ones, homes and clothing. The Manhattanville Dining Services team decided to help by donating clothing to the families who were affected. So, they initiated a clothing drive for November 12-13th. It was a last-minute relief project, but with the help of social media and many student organizations on campus, they were able to collect 40-plus bags of clothing!

The Pozas-Cruz family, who regularly help families in Honduras, will distribute these donations. The Chartwells team is thankful to everyone who generously participated in this important initiative!

Throw-It-Down Thursday!

UH Dining is proud to implement The Front Porch at Cougar Woods. This casual, outdoor space features a rustic-chic ambiance and offers ample room for safe distancing, fresh air and a delicious meal. String lights suspended over tables, chairs and whiskey barrels give this dining spot plenty of character. Every week, The Front Porch features “Throw-It-Down Thursday,” a time for the UH culinary team to show off their talents on the big BBQ smoker. With mouthwatering aromas, trendy lighting and Texas moonlight, The Front Porch is just the space students need.

Jennifer Dignin at Florida Poly recently read an ar ticle about a study stating that those “who wrote in gratitude journals participated in signi ficantly less gossip, rudeness an d backstabbing at work .” So Ph oenix Dining Services distributed note pads and encouraged as sociates to write in them. The hope is that co-workers will retu rn in Januar y energized for sprin g semester with a “glass half-fu ll” approach.

According to Lauren Locklear, a doctoral student wh o collaborated on the study , “We found the gratitude journa l is a simple, inexpensive interv ention that can have a signific ant impact on changing employee behavior for the better.”.
