A BRIEF HISTORY
The Lowcountry has long been a stage for exploration, conflict, and settlement. Before the British founded Beaufort in 1711, the region saw multiple colonial attempts by the Spanish and French, each leaving a lasting mark.

SPANISH BEGINNINGS
As early as 1520, Spanish explorer Francisco Gordillo named the region Santa Elena, making it one of the oldest European place names in America. By 1566, the Spanish built the fort San Felipe and established Santa Elena on Parris Island—once the most significant Spanish outpost north of Mexico. Attacks, including one by English privateer Sir Francis Drake in 1586, led to its eventual abandonment.
FRENCH AMBITIONS
In 1562, French captain Jean Ribaut explored the coast and founded Charlesfort on present-day Parris Island. He called the harbor Port Royal, a name still in use today. But struggles with supplies and native relations doomed the colony, and it was soon deserted.
RETURN OF THE SPANISH
After defeating Ribaut’s second colony in Florida, Spanish forces reclaimed the area, establishing outposts along the southeastern coast and again building on Parris Island.
ENGLISH SETTLEMENT
By the 1600s, English explorers arrived. Dr. Henry Woodward, South Carolina’s first settler, helped pave the way for colonists. Though initial efforts in Port Royal were redirected due to Spanish threats, English influence grew. By 1711, Beaufort was officially founded by prominent settlers Thomas Nairn and John Barnwell.
GULLAH CULTURE
Today, Beaufort is also home to one of the most vibrant and well-preserved Gullah communities in the United States—descendants of West African slaves who have maintained their unique language, customs, and traditions for generations. Their rich cultural contributions are deeply woven into the Lowcountry’s identity and continue to shape the spirit of the region. A key center for preserving and celebrating this heritage is the Penn Center on St. Helena Island, one of the first schools in the South for formerly enslaved Africans and a cornerstone of Gullah culture and history.
Visit the Historic Beaufort Foundation on Bay Street to see how they preserve the city’s legacy.

MILITARY PRESENCE
Parris Island, South Carolina, spans 8,095 acres, though only 3,262 acres are habitable, with the rest consisting of salt marsh. Marine Corps recruit training for enlisted men began there in 1915, and for women in 1949. Since then, the Depot has trained Marines for every major conflict of the 20th and 21st centuries, including World Wars I and II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Desert Shield/Storm, Restore Hope, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq—training hundreds of thousands of recruits throughout its history.
The first Marines arrived at Parris Island as part of the Atlantic Blockading Squadron during the Civil War. Led by Navy Capt. Samuel F. Du Pont, they seized Port Royal Harbor, which became a key Union Navy base. Parris Island transforms young men and women into United States Marines through rigorous training, a proud legacy, and a deep commitment to core values— preparing them to serve with honor and win our nation’s battles.

The Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort supports the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, II MEF units, and nearby Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. As the East Coast hub for all Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet squadrons, it hosts Marine Aircraft Group 31, which carries out anti-air warfare and offensive air support missions. The air station is a cornerstone of the region’s military presence, ensuring the readiness and strength of Marine aviation and recruit training operations.

"THE NOISE YOU HEAR IS THE SOUND OF FREEDOM"

The phrase “The noise you hear is the sound of freedom” has become a familiar slogan in Beaufort, South Carolina, particularly associated with the operations of Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Beaufort. This expression is prominently displayed at the entrance of the air station and is used to frame the noise from military aircraft, such as F/A-18 Hornets and F-35B Lightning IIs, as a symbol of national defense and freedom.
In 2019, MCAS Beaufort closed its main runway for extensive repairs, diverting all air traffic to a secondary runway. This change led to increased jet noise over residential areas, including the historic district of Beaufort. The air station encourages those looking to buy or build a home in the area to use the Air Installations Compatible Use Zones (AICUZ) Planning Map as a guide. Many residents have found they are on the edge of the 60-65 Day-Night Average Sound Level (DNL).
The next time you hear the roar of a military plane or helicopter overhead, take a moment to appreciate that the sound you hear is a reminder of the freedoms and security we enjoy every day.
MCAS BEAUFORT AIRSHOW
The MCAS Beaufort Air Show, hosted at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, delivers an action-packed weekend of thrilling aerial performances and family-friendly fun. Headlined by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, the show also features the F-16 Viper Demo Team, Red Thunder, Goulian, and Vampire Airshows. Guests can explore static displays, enjoy helicopter rides, test their skills in the Top Gun Experience, and relax in the Kids Zone with plenty of food vendors. This free event celebrates military aviation and the strong bond between the armed forces and the local community.

One Realty Leads by Example in Supporting the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry Communities
By Hannah Massen
When it comes to real estate in the Lowcountry, Charter One Realty has been an established leader for more than three decades – with the agency’s depth of market knowledge, negotiation skills and years of experience inspiring trust and confidence from their many clients. However, along with the team’s passion for real estate, the agents at Charter One Realty are also driven by another passion that is helping them lead the way, and truly “lead by example” in the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry: their passion for giving back -and for being a good neighbor by giving their time, energy and donations to those less fortunate in the community.
“All of us here in Charter One Realty recognize that we have been blessed with success due to the support for our business from our community,” said Tom Reed, Broker-in-Charge, who among other philanthropic activities serves as Chairman of the Board of Osprey Village, a nonprofit organization developing housing options and support services for local adults with developmental disabilities. “Giving back to our community as a way of saying ‘thank you’ is in our
“We value the strength of the relationships we have built with those neighbors, and the community we are all building together.”
company’s DNA. Every year, we donate 10% of our profits to support area non-profit organizations whose missions align with our goals for benefiting the community. We recognize that these organizations are enriching the lives along with the quality of life for all of the citizens in our community. The way that we look at it, we are simply doing our part. We view it as both a privilege and a responsibility. Our community supports us and we owe it to the community to reciprocate.”
Since its inception, Charter One Realty (which has ten offices throughout the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry) has supported the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra and watched it grow into one of the most renowned small-town symphonies in the world. They also support the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina as they elevate the Lowcountry’s thriving arts scene through producing plays, hosting art classes, and holding gallery shows for local artists.
The real estate firm does not only support arts and culture organizations – they are proud to lead efforts to
help support a number of other established and important community organizations throughout the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry, including Deep Well, Hilton Head Heroes, First Presbyterian Day School, and the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing. Charter One was named a Diamond Sponsor by Volunteers in Medicine and was proud to present VIM with a check for $20,000 last year. The firm is also leading the way and setting an example for others by providing financial support to help local organizations make much-needed purchases, helping to purchase two box trucks for Osprey Village and three box trucks for Hilton Head Regional Habitat for Humanity.
In addition, not only do the agents at Charter One Realty lead the way in helping people buy and sell their homes, but they are leaders in helping to give of their time and talents in helping to build homes for an important cause, as well. Many of the agency’s volunteers help Hilton Head Regional Habitat for Humanity build houses for families in need on and off the island.
A proven leader in so many ways, the charitable arm of Charter One Realty donates a significant portion of its profits to local organizations every year – but notes that their dedication to helping the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry thrive, and their love for their community, goes far beyond the numbers.
“The Coastal Empire and Lowcountry are our home and the people behind these organizations, and those they serve, are our neighbors,” said Reed. “We value the strength of the relationships we have built with those neighbors, and the community we are all building together.”
That’s what leadership and being a good neighbor are all about.
