Welcome to 2022’s edition of The Greyhound, the magazine for the Charterhouse community. As last year’s edition was landing on doorsteps we were celebrating the news that pupils were being welcomed back to School after the UK’s third Lockdown. Soon after came a nationwide vaccination rollout, the like of which we have never seen before, and, as the School prepared to go fully coeducational, a sense of optimism and celebration reverberated through our community.

Inside this fifth edition of The Greyhound you’ll see a return of some of our usual activities including School plays, sports’ fixtures and Artifex, but also some exciting new additions such as our new Entrepreneurship Diploma, new musical ensembles for junior pupils, and, of course, the new cohort of female pupils and our stunning new Boarding Houses.

SCHOOL UPDATE

School Update After almost four years of preparation and an enormous amount of planning, September 2021 saw Charterhouse welcome girls into the Under School for the first time.

This means that after fifty years of a coeducational Sixth Form, the School will have girls in every year in September 2022 – just a few months away.

T

his year was almost certainly the year with the single largest intake of new pupils ever. 110 boys entering as Fourths were joined by nearly 60 girls, 24 girls in the Removes and more than 100 boys and girls in the Specialists. In total we had more than 300 new joiners, and, in another first for the School, more girls than boys.

And it all seemed so completely normal.

Of course, for the great majority of the

new Fourths who now come from mixed Prep Schools, a mixed Year 9 was nothing remarkable, and Charterhouse moved into the fully coed era without missing a beat.

However, in the background, a great deal of work had gone into being ready for the start of the year, and despite the significant impact of Covid on construction projects, a steady flow of minor miracles, ably coordinated by the Estates Department, meant that our two new Houses were looking fantastic for the start of the year. Both are new-build Houses, with Saunderites relocating to the first and our newest girls’ House, Northbrook, opening its doors for the first time in the other. These are first class new facilities, with light and airy social spaces and common rooms alongside a mixture of quads and double rooms

Other parts of the campus have also seen a lot of activity. Sutton moved into the newly refurbished building that has been vacated by Saunderites, and have firmly established themselves as a girls’ House in the centre of the School. Scholars’ Court now boasts ‘Oak’ – our new central dining space for the Old Houses and adding a lovely social space and coffee shop for staff and pupils alike outside those hours.

The new Chemistry and Maths Centre opened in 2018, offering fantastic new facilities and a dramatic vista, but work has also continued on Phase 2 (summer 2021) and Phase 3 (summer 2022) of the Science developments.

Most OCs will remember the old lab benches and stools, but the original Science Block, first opened in 1882 (although probably not with those benches), is much of the way through a major upgrade. The three floors of the building now house Physics and Biology – Chemistry having moved into the new Centre – and this has allowed significant refurbishment of the teaching spaces and a welcome re-flowing of some of the layout of some of the hashrooms.

The work finishes this summer, and completes a very significant programme of investment in Science and Maths.

OC ORIGINALS Ralph Vaughan Williams, Composer (R1890)

Ralph Vaughan Williams ‘Noisy’, ‘talking’, ‘playing the fool’ – these are all beaks’ comments on a normal, lively 14-year-old named Ralph Vaughan Williams. They may not have appreciated his singleminded passion for music, but his potential was certainly not lost on Mr George Robinson, Master in Charge of Music and founding Housemaster of Robinites.

alph came to Charterhouse in 1887 to join his older brother in Saunderites. It was not uncommon for pupils to arrive at different points throughout the year and, if space was not immediately available in their House, they were temporarily allocated to Robinites, which acted as a small junior holding House. Ralph stayed briefly in Robinites and then duly moved to Saunderites, with the Headmaster, William Haig Brown, as his Housemaster.

Far more unusual was the fact that, two years later, he then returned to Robinites on the invitation of the Housemaster to be Head Monitor.

It is not unreasonable to assume that Robinites offered a calmer atmosphere than the much larger Saunderites House, far more conducive to composing and music practice.

Music was not taught as part of the School curriculum but, nevertheless, a variety of musical experiences were available. Parents could pay extra for individual music tuition – the violin teacher at Charterhouse was an eminent but very elderly violinist named Joseph Dando, so it is likely that he would have taught Ralph the viola; he also learnt the piano and organ. In addition, there were a number of instrumental and choral groups. The School orchestra was run

by Mr Frederic Girdlestone (BH18671912) who was a keen amateur musician. “I was one of the two violas, the other being the famous Mr Stewart (‘Stewfug’) whose chief business in life was to preside with complete inefficiency at ‘extra school’ [ie detention]: however, he was a good viola player and a great help in the orchestra. One of my first practical lessons in orchestration came from playing the viola part in the slow

movement of Beethoven’s first symphony, when I was excited to find that my repeated notes on the viola were enriched by a long holding note from Mr Becker’s horn.”

Every Saturday evening there were entertainments in Hall, sometimes from professional visiting musicians and actors, but often performed by staff and pupils. Ralph performed regularly, including several performances of his own compositions: “One of the most astounding events of my school musical life took place when Hamilton and I [Herbert Vivian Hamilton, g1888] decided to give a concert of our own compositions. It was my task to approach Dr Haig Brown, the Headmaster, for leave to use the School Hall.

Dr Haig Brown was a formidable man, and in later life I should never have dared to make the request, but leave was obtained, and we gave the concert… I was complimented after the concert by Mr Noon (BH1873-1907), the mathematical master, who said in his well-known sepulchral voice: ‘You must go on.’ That is one of the few words of encouragement I have ever received.”

The concert featured a Trio by Vaughan Williams, performed by four string players!

Following on from this success, Mr Girdlestone asked Ralph to organise a concert of Welsh music as part of a series of four national programmes. He not only recruited suitable performers, but wrote his own homage to Wales (a March entitled Cambria) to open the concert. A review in The Carthusian approved the concert as “a short though very interesting programme” and Cambria as “undoubtedly the best amateur performance of the evening, excepting perhaps Mr Marshall’s ‘Hark Afar the Bugle’”.

Concert programmes show that Ralph was performing in small string ensembles and also piano duets, with fellow pupils, beaks and also with the Headmaster’s daughters. He learnt the organ because his family did not consider music to be a suitable career for a gentleman, with the exception of being a respectable church organist.

Choral music was another important aspect of Ralph’s musical education.

The choir sang for Chapel services, as it does today, and also performed in concerts: “Then there was, of course, the School choir which practised once a week in the time otherwise devoted to ‘extra French’ and was therefore very popular. Choir and orchestra used to meet once a year for a grand concert at the end of the summer, and occasionally for an oratorio: I remember taking part in Handel’s ‘Judas Maccabeus’.” When not making music, Ralph was also an enthusiastic member of the Cadet Corps, rising to the dizzy heights of Lance Corporal, and a regular contributor in the French Debating Society.

All in all, despite that fact that Music was not treated as an academic subject, there were opportunities to perform and appreciate music at Charterhouse, providing at least some preparation for Vaughan Williams to study at the Royal College of Music in 1890 and later at Trinity College, Cambridge. He became famous as one of the greatest English composers of the 20th century, but always kept in touch with his old School. He opened what is now known as the ‘Old Music School’ in 1940, on which occasion he also performed with the School orchestra in Haydn’s Toy Symphony, playing the cuckoo “solemnly, and moreover artistically”, with the Headmaster, Robert Birley (BH35-47), conducting! In 1950 he composed additional music for the Charterhouse Masque (page 12), and he wrote reminiscences of his School life for The Carthusian magazine. The Charterhouse Ralph Vaughan Williams Music School was named in his honour and opened by his widow, Ursula, in 1983.

THE ACADEMIC LANDSCAPE Duncan Byrne, Deputy Head (Academic)

Academically Speaking...

New Deputy Head (Academic) Duncan Byrne gives his opinion on the changing academic landscape and what you can expect from Charterhouse going forward.

“M

y role is to be responsible for the quality of teaching in the School. That means looking after reporting, assessment, and the curriculum and how that changes over time. And one of the most important parts of my role is supporting Heads of Departments – we have 22 departments – to ensure they produce the very best quality of teaching possible in their areas.

Throughout my 25 year teaching career, much has changed across the industry. Most striking is the understanding we have now of how the pastoral and the academic interact.

Pastoral care is now a prerequisite for academic achievement. At the 8

beginning of my career it was one or the other; as a young teacher you could go down the academic route and become Head of Department or the pastoral route, and never the twain would meet! We now have a far better understanding of mental health and how you’re not going to be able to achieve academically unless you’re happy. So we pay much more attention to how we can combine academic and pastoral considerations in the pupils’ best interests. For example, we’ve changed our sanctions system. In the past beaks could sanction their pupils as they saw fit. These days we have a safety net. Beaks give notifications to pupils for various reasons (like late banco) but we make sure they’re all filtered

by pastoral staff. This is because we understand that if there is something major going on in a young person’s life, hitting them with more and more sanctions is not going to be beneficial.

We are much better at looking at the bigger picture.

We’ve seen the introduction of many other changes during the past two years of pandemic. I think independent schools largely got the balance right. We realised fairly quickly that this was a game changer and, being fee-paying schools, realised we would have to find a way to maintain teaching during lockdowns. Fortunately, we had made significant investment in technology already but it was quick decision

making (utilising Zoom), good timetabling, and dedication, that allowed us to adapt to online learning with Charterhouse@home. Academic delivery in this space was a learning process – at the start we tried to deliver lessons as if we were in the room, but we soon realised that wasn’t the most effective strategy.

We therefore quickly learnt a new methodology. We shared ideas and we created new online resources and new ways of doing things over hundreds of hours of additional work.

It was a very intense time.

I think we also understood rapidly how isolating online learning can be, so we had to think carefully about how we delivered pastoral care during

this time; how we would keep pupils engaged when they had none of their regular social interaction. I think the sector did this really well. This wasn’t necessarily the same across the country. I think perhaps outside the independent sector there was less urgency to think of pupils’ wellbeing.

We’ve heard a lot about ‘lost learning’ but I don’t think that we’ve lost much learning here at Charterhouse. I think we’re more fearful that our pupils have lost their experiences – the play, the sporting fixtures etc. Ultimately we understood the need to put the pupils first and this has minimised any negative long-term effects.

Reflecting on the Covid experience is an interesting one. In some respects

it has shown us the importance of face-to-face contact. Relationships are so important and so motivational in learning. However, the progress we made with IT has been beneficial.

We used One Note and this continued this year with banco. It’s a great way to share resources – you can never say you lost your homework sheet!

– and it’s useful for students who are absent. Likewise, online parents evenings… yes, it’s lovely to create relationships and easier face-to-face, but there is a lot of waiting around.

Also, some parents live abroad and have never before met with subject teachers. We have stayed online this year which means that every parent will be able to speak to every subject teacher.”

THE ACADEMIC LANDSCAPE Duncan Byrne, Deputy Head (Academic)

Exams & Assessments With two years of self assessment for pupils, Deputy Head (Academic) Duncan Byrne reflects on how grades should be awarded for pupils.

“T

he pandemic experience has also shone a light on exams and assessments.

There are a number of people in independent education who think that this is an opportunity to completely re-evaluate what happens at GCSE. They were introduced in 1988 when only about 20% of the population went to university and the environment now has completely changed. Some would say continuous assessment is a fairer way of judging a pupil’s attainment rather than the stress of exams. A lot of societies work this way. But I think our problem here in the UK is that league tables have become everything.

Teachers are so used to doing as much as they can to assist pupils to get the best possible grades because, ultimately, 10

this is how they are judged. This explains why the last year of self-assessment has resulted in a lot of grade inflation.

Therefore, presently, we don’t have any better option than exams.

Exams are objective demonstrations of student performance. I’m not saying they’re fair as they suit some learners better than others, but they are objective.

I like the idea of teacher assessment as part of this, but we haven’t proven as a profession in this country (and I’m including me in there) that we are able to do this objectively. We are conditioned, as teachers, to see the very best in our pupils. One of the reasons why grades went up was because we were asked to look at the very best possible performance of our students.

We could see some interesting developments here over the next few years. Charterhouse and some other Rugby Group schools have a working group on alternatives for the future and it’s interesting to see whether the new Education Secretary will look differently at GCSEs. I rather hope that they do, because I’m not really sure of their purpose as everyone stays at school until 16. We are also one of the only countries to examine pupils so intensely, with many of our neighbours examining ‘core’ subjects only. This would be a good introduction for GCSE level. And what I would love to do, in this brave new world of core exams only, is to develop our own curriculum where we were doing cross-curricular projects

e.g. everyone does a project in a team where they are assessed collectively.

This would be not just on what they produce but also their design, their teamwork, and their collaboration, so soft skills are considered alongside the academic. Those project skills will be invaluable to all in their careers.

In the Specialists we run both A level and IB and we’re quite unique in this (the Pre-U is being phased out nationally from 2024). Interestingly what we are doing is, for even those not doing IB, ensuring there is some commonality between the two courses. The advantage of the IB is that there is a lot of joined up thinking; a lot of emphasis on how the six different subjects interweave. So we’ve now introduced that all our A level students do the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification). We want all our students to acquire the independent study skills that they will need when they go to university. It can be on any

subject and can have many formats – an essay, an artifect, a playlet – anything. It’s a process of design, review, production and then selfevaluation – all key skills that will sustain our students not just at university but later in life.

”

on Wednesday afternoons, which again are non-examined, where they are looking outside the box, particularly in collaborative exercises.

With this new thinking I believe that British independent education is leading the way.”

Part of this involves developing a healthy scepticism. Information is now so readily available, but as a consequence we have to be more discerning about what we read. It’s part of a modern education. When I was 15 I believed what I read / saw on TV but in an era of fake news we have to be more questioning. So in IB we have compulsory Theory of Knowledge and for Fourth formers we have the Enquiry series. This is completely outside the normal curriculum and it asks them to be sceptical about information, looking at conspiracy theories and rhetoric.

“The Masque production staged in Founder’s Court presented the history of the School to a wide audience. It was a remarkable collective effort involving a large number of boys, members of Brooke Hall with their families, and the School orchestra. As I recall, other public schools staged outdoor plays and pageants at that time, but this was on a different scale altogether.

It was 60 years last summer since the Charterhouse Masque of 1961, in which I played a minor speaking part as one of Lovelace’s cavaliers in the Civil War. To celebrate, we arranged a Zoom reunion with some of those actors in my scene, where we also got to watch some of the original DVD.” Nick Cooke (V62)

Nick C: “I seem to remember that it was the 1st XI football or cricket who acted as the guncarriage crew in the Mafeking scene.”

Jeremy: “That rings a big bell, yes.”

Nick C: “I seem to remember it went on for weeks…”

Richard: “It was a fairly fullterm summer activity as far as I was concerned.”

Jeremy: “The opening of the Masque was the bringing out from Gownboys (understudying for Old Charterhouse) of some Carthusian monks on their way to execution. Sombre bells were rung to accompany their entrance and exit. The real monks were hung, drawn and quartered, and one historian said it was the cruellest thing Henry did in his whole reign. The opening to the celebration seemed odd and quite disturbing.”

Richard: “I remember the stage very well and… the famous speech of Sir Richard Lovelace… stone walls do not a prison make… because we sang that in Chapel, didn’t we? But if you ask me what Richard Lovelace actually did and why he was put in prison I couldn’t actually tell you!”

Nick C: “I’m amazed these DVDs still exist at all… extraordinary.”

Richard: “Yes, it’s wonderful.”

RISING STARS A profile of Jessica West, 2YS Fletcherites

Sisters in Arms Determined and intelligent, Jessica West is a fantastic role model for all our current girls and our new girls.

“I

came to Charterhouse as I was excited for a change from day school. This was quite a big shift, not to mention challenging, with all the disruption associated with the pandemic, but it has also been very rewarding. I study Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Economics, and whilst it’s definitely a juggle with four subjects, I really enjoy them.

I originally wanted to read Physics and Engineering,” Jess continues, “but after starting a new A Level in Economics, I realised how diverse and interesting the subject is. I love Economics as it’s so multidisciplinary: to be a good Economist requires appreciation of Mathematics, History, Geography and, increasingly as the subject evolves, Psychology. I’m now applying for Economics and Econometrics at University and hope to gain a greater insight into the numbers and economics behind the news. I’ve attended so many different lectures and talks through the School from varied sources such as the David Nott Foundation (surgery on the frontlines) to Nigel Farage (politics) and these have all allowed me to build up my awareness of the world and current events.”

As if her studies don’t keep her busy enough, Jess is also our first ever female Head of CCF. “As Head of Corps, I oversee each division (the Army, Marine and RAF) working with a team of the Heads of those sections.

This entails making sure all the sections run smoothly, so that training is maximised and enjoyable. We are supported by a fabulous staff team 16

who go out of their way to organise amazing activities and excursions and these form many of the highlights of my time at Charterhouse.

Going coeducational will be great for activities such as CCF where girls are currently a minority. Last year, I went on a summer camp for CCF with 15 others and didn’t realise I would be the only girl. That was a bit of an eye-opener, but also great fun!” laughs Jess. “Things are changing and for the first time we have girls in Removes in the CCF which is really encouraging. I’m hoping there will be more sign up in March after the CCF presentation. I’ve definitely seen more interest in House as I wander around in my CCF uniform, and I’ve been asked a few times by both Specialists and Fourths about what we do, so people are definitely interested.”

The other extra-curricular activity very close to Jess’s heart is the Sustainability Committee which Jess represents on the Pupil Council.

“The committee is pro-active, and we try to raise awareness across all Departments in the School and it’s been great to have had beak support.

The Committee has made some progress with the matter of food waste and been able to rewild some of the School grounds in order to create more attractive environments for biodiversity. The annual Climate Conference has also been very successful, and it has been inspiring to link with and hear from passionate specialists in their field. We’ve also made good inroads in working with some of those companies that presented, including one run by an OC, DelAgua; it’s part of the UN Carbon credit scheme and helps the School to offset its carbon.

We’ve just had our first Environmental Executive Committee of the year when different staff bodies join us,” continues Jess. “The School has taken on a company to review their carbon emissions. It was really interesting; once you break the School’s emissions down you can see exactly where we need to focus our efforts to be more sustainable. One such place is energy usage, which is especially hard during Covid times when windows must be kept open for ventilation. We had questions on recycling but were informed that only 0.02% of our waste goes to landfill which is really encouraging, and the committee is raising awareness of this.”

With what little time Jess has left she enjoys Scottish dancing, captaining the 2nd XI hockey team and being a Senior Scholar as well as a School Monitor. “Charterhouse has given me so many fantastic opportunities, both in and out of the classroom, and I would advise pupils to take full advantage of what’s on offer.”

RISING STARS A profile of Joshua Diri, 2YS Weekites

Seizing the Day Reflective and ambitious, Head of School Joshua Diri takes us from science lab, to football field to mentoring online.

“I

’ve been in boarding schools since I was nine and knew about Charterhouse through my aunt who came here and was taught Philosophy and RS by Dr Peterken himself. And when we came to see the campus I was just stunned! At the time I was at a school with just 30 students in each year so the size and grounds of Charterhouse was breathtaking!” Josh smiles, remembering his first trip to Charterhouse all those years ago.

“When I came to the School I don’t think I had many qualities that I have now,” Josh muses. “I was quite mischievous when younger and had a lot of energy which took me a bit of time to learn how to focus. And I’ve focused myself a lot over my five years here. Especially once that stark reality of GCSEs, and the impact on the rest of my life, really hit. That was when I personally decided that I was going to start working hard. And when I did, everything else came together.

I’m studying Biology, Chemistry and Economics. On reflection, I wish I had taken Maths, and I’m considering all my options presently, including taking a gap year to study Maths and then applying for a degree in Economics.

I like to do things that challenge me,” he continues, “and sciences are very different so they were definitely a challenge. Chemistry is my favourite as it’s not just learning but giving you the tools to solve problems, and I find this very challenging. Economics was a good replacement for Maths and helps you understand what is happening around you. It’s so foundational to so many things and

for long-term prospects. Hopefully, I’ll go on to study Biochemistry but I can’t see myself staying in academia my whole life but entering the business world.

I have a lot of enthusiasm to be involved in lots of things at School and one love is football. I play in the 1st XI as centre back. It is getting more difficult to balance football and school work, and I’ve just come out of injury, but it’s a great outlet to have.

You can spend six hours in the classroom and be drained, but then play football and you’re ready to go again! It refreshes you and puts you in a great position to work more,” Josh explains.

On being asked about being a joint Head of School Josh smiles: “I was really surprised!” he exclaims.

“Initially, you have to be a School

Monitor and then you apply to be Head of School by writing an application letter. Then there was an interview with the Deputy Head which was quite tough. Due to my work with Unity Society he asked me whether I thought I could eliminate racism at the School?!… I said no. And then I sat there for a further minute, reflecting.

With Unity Society we’re not trying to tell people what’s right and wrong.

We want people to understand what other societies are like and what other views exist, educating people. So that’s what I said: ‘There are a lot of factors outside of School that contribute to race view inside School, and we can’t control all of them. What we can do though is give people the tools and equip them to address racism when they encounter it.’ I think it’s a really important message, and School has been very supportive, helping us write an anti-racism

charter. My role at Unity is very similar to that of Head of School: representing the School body, listening to people, understanding any problems, and ensuring the School is optimal for all.”

Outside of School, Josh is making an impact as well. “Last year, I started a charity with an American friend. We had been talking during the holidays about how we could help people.

Where I grew up in Nigeria there is an orphanage and they haven’t been able to access educational tools. So, under the name ‘The Mentorship Programme’, we set up an online educational platform and I reached out to the King’s Village Orphanage in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. I brought in nine Carthusians, who I knew were academically very capable, and we set up three different classes – Maths, English and general Sciences.

I acquired the syllabus so we could plan, and we brought in videos and worksheets too. And the students loved it. Originally, we started off with 12 students as I didn’t want it to be too large. But it grew!… what happened was we could still see those students but on the edges of the Zoom there were lots of new students who were there to listen and learn alongside.

They had been speaking to their friends, and they all wanted to come!

We ran this on Saturday afternoons, from January 2020 to end of half-term this year, so just over a year, and we’re now looking to pass it on to a new generation.”

OC News OC Basketball

O

ld Carthusian Basketball Club took on Charterhouse in November winning their two games 77-47 and 53-51. However, the Carthusians took back the reins in February at the Queen’s Sports Centre. The final score saw the Carthusians take home a win with 62 against the OCs’ 56.

OC Art Society

T

he Old Carthusian Art Society has shown its mettle over the difficult months of the pandemic. While events involving larger gatherings were restricted, we innovated with a successful series of Zoom-based interviews with artists and art world figures, and these were remarkably well attended by our members and their guests. We were also opportunistic: when restrictions were relaxed in September we mounted the latest edition of the OCAS Biennial Exhibition, which this year took place at the Bermondsey Project Space opposite the White Cube in London. Over one hundred works were selected from a very strong submission from OCAS members, reflecting the creative hours spent during Lockdown! Shortly before Omicron closed in, the OCAS Annual Dinner took place in the spectacular Members’ Lounge and roof terrace at South Bank Tower.

2022 sees the resumption of the full calendar of events, beginning with a lithography workshop in late February, a gallery tour in the Spring, and our Annual Dinner which this year will be combined with a visit to the Levison Collection in the Summer. In the Autumn we are planning a special one-off event exploring the wilder frontiers of digital art.

OC Golf

Simon Stilwell’s ‘Hole in One’

U

nfortunately, due to Covid there was a lighter golfing calendar for the OCGS than normal. Teams were duly assembled nonetheless for the Halford Hewitt, Bernard Darwin and Grafton Morrish.

The Halford Hewitt was uniquely held, due to the pandemic, in September in Costa del Sol-like conditions on the Kent coast. Unfortunately, the OCs were ousted in Round 1 in a tight affair culminating in defeat on the 20th hole in the decisive match. The silver lining proved to be a stellar run to the semi-finals of the plate with several youngsters, Harry Light (V13), Charlie Thomas (W14) and Gus Giddins (W14) dismantling their foursomes opponents before two tight matches were lost down the 18th to swing the final-four tie to a 2-1 defeat.

For the Grafton Morrish the team successfully navigated the qualifying round at Royal Wimbledon, finishing runners up. And, after defeating Stamford in round one, all three matches vs Glasgow Academy swung dramatically in the final few holes. The top and bottom pairs both relinquished leads late on to lose on the 18th, whilst the middle match won in the most incredible manner. (Captain) Simon Stilwell (g95) closed the match out with a hole in one on the 16th at Hunstanton – leaving his partner, Richard Allen (B84), with the easiest of tasks of simply picking the ball out of hole, shaking the opponent’s hands, and snapping a quick pic of the achievement.

The Bernard Darwin team drew Clifton in the first round (always a tough fixture) and ran out comfortable winners with Julian Hill (W78) and Nigel Gray (H74) in particular showing some sparkling golf in a seven and six win. In the afternoon the side played Harrow which is always a difficult match. The first match was lost and although Hill and Gray were two up with three to play, despite some late heroics the final pair succumbed two and one.

Despite there being less official OC golf being played this year, lockdown saw a huge growth in the game so it’s a wonderful time to join the society. The Spring Meeting takes place at Royal St Georges in May and the Autumn Meeting will be played at the Berkshire in September.

hile much of the expected football calendar was compromised by Covid in 2021, the Old Carthusians put our teams on the pitch as regularly as we could before the 2020-21 Arthurian League season was eventually called off. At this point, the 1st XI had a 100% record, the 2nd XI were well placed in Division 2 and the 3rd XI were safe in Division 3.

With only a handful of Cup competitions able to be concluded, we had

fortunately been invited to participate as a guest club in a new competition for us, the Southern Amateur League (SAL) Senior Cup. The SAL is the biggest and toughest amateur league in the region, with competing clubs all ‘open’, meaning recruitment for talent is not limited to catchment or school ties. We have had recent successes in this area of the game, notably our three appearances and one triumph in the Amateur Football Alliance Cup finals. We are pleased to report that our 1st XI delivered magnificently on their debut performance in the competition, overcoming strong opponents in ‘hostile’ environments to eventually lift the trophy on a sunny afternoon on the banks of the Thames.

At time of writing, it is pleasing to report that the club is still performing well, with our Veterans XI looking for a

second trophy in three years, our 2nd XI fighting hard in the Arthurian League Division 2; and our 1st XI looking strong in the Premier League and into the final stages of both the AFA and SAL Senior Cups. We hope there will be more trophies to report soon.

Finally, it goes without saying, that it has been logistically and administratively challenging over the last couple of years, so we continue to thank all those who take positions on our committee, who come to support us, and of course, to the many OCs who pull on our famous jersey each year. Despite this, we are not invulnerable to the times and are in need of fresh and committed OC footballers to keep our traditions going. Malcolm Bailey What brought you to Charterhouse in 1974?

Whilst at Cambridge University one of my senior tutors said ‘there’s this school in Surrey that wants a geographer and someone to coach football’.

He looked at me said ‘if you don’t go for that job you’ll be a fool’ and so I went for the job. I clearly remember walking down to Chapel on my first morning wearing brown polished clogs and flare trousers with a smart jacket and tie. My hair was much longer then, and there was more of it!

Where did your love of football come from?

When I was young I could walk out of my house with a ball and play five-aside with the other boys. In my primary school we played two games against another school, and that was the first time I’d ever played in a proper organised match. I then played in sixth form, and then at university, and so on. My love of football comes from those early days.

What did football at Charterhouse look like when you started coaching?

There hadn’t been a huge number of fixtures so we built up the numbers by splitting the age groups so that under 14s, 15s and 16s had their own games, and then created a 2nd XI and a 1st XI. Gradually that grew and we took part in competitions and went on football tours.

What did becoming the Housemaster of Girdlestoneites mean to you?

Can you tell us about the origins of football and your book From Cloisters to Cup Finals?

There used to be a mob game played between settlements – if you got your ball into the centre of the opposition village and held up against the statue, then you won. The game gradually modified over time because of too many deaths and eventually the Football Association (formed of representatives from London football clubs and schools including Charterhouse) restructured the game with rules to follow.

Going into the House was something I wanted to do because of the pastoral nature. I had my wife, Angela, with me, and together we were very happy to take on the role. It was a prestigious position, and a great thrill to be able to do that job.

I was fascinated by the way the game has developed and felt it needed to be written down. I started researching and the Archives Department were wonderfully helpful to me, so I decided that I wanted to write the book from a Charterhouse aspect. I am very proud of the Charterhouse influence.

What are your fondest memories of Charterhouse?

OCs often talk about you – what is it like being a Carthusian Legend?

Though there are several of them, working with Angela by my side and seeing both my children join the School are probably my fondest memories.

To see my daughter play a violin solo or sing in the choir, and then see my son become Captain of football was a great thrill.

I’m flattered! Especially after the number of years that I’ve been away from Charterhouse. I made a lot of friends there, and living in the House was even more special because you were closer to those people. Although I’m a long way from Charterhouse now, I still keep up-to-date with OCs and news from the School through my children.

OC Yacht Club At the Helm! scheduling was just plain luck! We host an event with the School every year where we hire a fleet of keelboats that we sail and race with the pupils and beaks. Fortuitously, it just happened to be in a lull of Covid regulations, and was able to go ahead.

year on from taking over the reins from his brother, Jim Miller (P85), we caught up with Tim Miller (P83) to find out how his first year as OCYC Hon Sec has been.

Secretary Louise Blampied. This group, plus six others, form the running committee of the club. Yearly we have an annual AGM which is open to the entire membership.

“I’ve definitely had some big shoes to fill – I don’t know where Jim got his energy from to do what he did for our club! It’s been great, and I’ve really enjoyed it, but there’s certainly a bit of head-scratching sometimes. I’ve had a lot of help in my first year from my brother Jim, the Commodore David Aisher (S68), and many others.

It’s a very friendly club, and when we get together it’s always good fun.

There are currently about 130 OCYC members, who vary in age substantially.

We’ve had a bit of a change in the last year in that a number of younger people have joined us, including six new members under 30, and they especially bring a slightly different dimension to the club. They’ve even been tasked by the Commodore with coming up with their own event for everybody this year. So I can’t wait to see what they might have in store.

The OCYC runs along the lines of most sailing clubs, so there are a number of flag officers who have that name because they have permission to use a special version of our OCYC flag. The two most senior flag officers are the Commodore, David Aisher (S68), and the Vice Commodore, David Hunt (S65). We have rear Commodores, Charlie Kitching (D14) and Sam Deacon (P85), also flag officers, and then there’s the Secretary (me!), the Treasurer, Peter Mills (D99), and Membership 24

Last year, we managed to run everything we set out to, in spite of Covid. That was due to a combination of planning, flexibility and luck. So our curry night changed date about three or four times before it finally managed to go ahead in October. And the planned rally in August in France was changed to Beaulieu in the New Forest instead. That was the main rally where everyone came together last year, and we didn’t want to risk it being cancelled. Some of our

A lot of our racing is internal within the club, for example the Commodore’s Trophy this year was a race between OC boats of Old Houses against New Houses. But members do also compete in external races like the Round The Island Race, which sees over a thousand boats race anti-clockwise around the Isle of Wight, or the well-known Fastnet Race, a biennial offshore yacht race organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club. The latter had a difficult start this year in appalling conditions with many boats retiring before they even got out of the Solent. The lifeboats were kept busy! We had some really good results in that race though.

There are two interschool alumni races that we compete in: the Belvedere Trophy, which takes place in St Mary’s Reservoir in April – we came fifth out of eight last year – and

the Arrow Trophy in the Solent where about 22 independent schools take part. These are forty footers, crewed by around 10 people, and the event is two days of racing. The first day is fleet racing where all the schools are racing against each other and then usually on the second day the top four schools match race, where it’s just two boats against each other. The boat that comes fifth in the fleet race (but doesn’t qualify for the match races) wins the Charterhouse Bowl, and this year that was us! We came home with our own trophy!

This year, for the first time, rather than book into one of the sailing clubs or a hotel we hired a house in Cowes.

One night there was an Arrow dinner at Cowes Yacht Haven, and the other night we had dinner in the house so

the whole menu had a Carthusian theme. The meal started with BadenPowell cocktails made with sparkling wine, blackberries, blackberry liqueur and brandy. And then we had Peterken’s Rarebit, named in honour of the Headmaster. The recipe comprised of a nautical salute to the Headmaster as seen from offshore with toast, strong English cheddar and stout at the core, plus fire added by mustard and cayenne.

We try and bring a Charterhouse element to whatever we’re doing for our OCYC races. As a Royal Yachting Association Club we must publish a notice of race before an event.

Rather than just a set of notes, Jim Miller creates amazing history documents with links to famous events that involved Charterhouse or Old Carthusians. Last year, we concentrated on OC explorers and the first one was Wilfrid’s Blast after Wilfrid Noyce (W36; BH50-61) who played a crucial role in the 1953 Everest Expedition, and another was Courtauld’s Blitz after Augustine Courtauld (G23), a yachtsman and Artic explorer. One of our events, Bessie’s Gallop, gets its name from Elizabeth I’s visits to The Charterhouse when she became queen. This year we had Bessie’s Gallop the Mallory edition after George Mallory (BH1910-1921), who took part in the first three British expeditions to Mount Everest.

It’s been a fairly steep learning curve organizing all our events but there have been many highlights.

My favourite event was the J70 keelboat event where we went over to Cowes and had an OCYC race followed by a lovely black-tie dinner in the Royal Yacht Squadron. The next day, the School came down and we had six J70 boats, each one with an OC on it, sailing alongside pupils (and some beaks) for a series of races. There followed a massive cream tea afterwards.

Apart from the wonderful events we have been able to facilitate, the other highlight for me has been welcoming new members to the club.

They’ve all got stuck in and brought this new dynamic to the group. I’m very much looking forward to what 2022 might bring.”

150 YEARS

1892

It is 150 years since the first Charterhouse pupils arrived in Godalming, walking up Racquets Court Hill from the railway station. They were greeted with the splendid sight of their brand new, purposebuilt School.

The buildings were designed to impress, built in the Gothic style from Bargate sandstone, freshlyhewn from a quarry just below Big Ground. The architect, Philip Hardwick, included symbolic echoes of the monastic London Charterhouse buildings and historic items were incorporated from the old School, including an entire archway from the old Gownboys House.

I have fish to the door four times a week and any amount of ducks, chickens and eggs… We have Clarke for grocer, Wells for milk and Mr Bryant MarshallNixon greengrocer.” Delivery was by horse and cart or on foot and the closest approximation to Deliveroo was the muffin man, who circulated the Houses once a week with a tray of muffins and crumpets on his head, costing two for one penny.

Pupils and beaks alike were eager to explore their new surroundings and, as playing fields had yet to be constructed, the boys were permitted to walk or cycle in the countryside and swim in the River Wey. Local townsfolk were equally curious to meet their new neighbours: the Mayor and corporation, resplendent in their civic robes, arrived in four carriages for a formal visitation.

A welcome address was presented to the Headmaster, and the dignitaries were given a tour of the new premises.

1872 was the beginning of a long and generally happy and symbiotic relationship between Charterhouse and local businesses. A local tailor, Pitchers of Godalming, soon became the School’s preferred uniform supplier, visiting the Houses daily to take orders; boots and shoes were manufactured locally by Holdens, and bespoke caps were handmade by Mrs Mary Anne Wright from her cottage in Peperharow Road.

Charterhouse staff soon started to have an impact in the local community: Frederic Girdlestone (BH1867-1912) and Thomas Ethelbert Page (BH1873-1910) were the first of many beaks to be elected to Godalming Borough Council

Local businesses were keen to impress. Annie Marion Haig Brown, the Headmaster’s wife, wrote to her parents: “I must not forget to tell you

Godalming’s cultural life benefited from a long line of Charterhouse beaks who have contributed to the running of the town’s choral society, operatic society, theatre group, youth orchestra, and brass band. On a more practical level, Charterhouse’s pupil-led Fire Brigade trained every week, not only as first responders to any fires on the School site, but also for nearby farms and buildings; Captain H F Thompson (BH1910-1916) is recorded on Godalming Fire Station’s First World War memorial as Captain of the Fire Brigade. During World War Two, masters and older pupils joined the local Home Guard, ready to play their part in the event of an invasion.

The School’s arrival had an impact on the local infrastructure too. The route that we know as Charterhouse Road was originally ‘Sandy Lane’, and not much more than a farm track in 1872, but traffic between Godalming and Charterhouse soon changed that.

Charterhouse staff were quick to invest in new technology developments that benefited the local community, such as the Frith Hill, Godalming and Farncombe Water Company, of which Headmaster William Haig Brown was chairman, and the Godalming Borough Electric Lighting Committee, chaired by T E Page from 1892 onwards.

The new School was built on 70 acres of open farmland that was auctioned off from Deanery Farm in 1867 for the grand sum of £4,500. This included Green, Big Ground, Maniacs and J Ground, but there was no Lessington (purchased for £5,000 in 1897) or Under Green (purchased for £4,000 in 1888); the Northbrook estate (including the sites for the New Houses, QSC, golf course and Athletics track) was purchased in 1924 for £10,000. There were few other buildings in the vicinity, and the School was very much a self-contained community with its own water supply (from a well underneath the Maintenance buildings) and gas lighting, supplied initially from the School’s own gas generating station at the bottom of Racquet’s Court Hill.

There was a tuckshop (Crown) and bicycle repair shop. Housing quickly sprang up to accommodate beaks and support staff, with Charterhouse becoming one of the biggest employers in the area. The healthy country location and new facilities were popular with parents and pupil numbers shot up, outgrowing the three boarding Houses provided by Hardwick’s design. Eight enterprising beaks bought land adjacent to the School with their own money and built boarding Houses that were run as private enterprises. The last of these private Houses were finally bought into School ownership in the 1920s; seven of them were demolished and moved across the School campus to new premises in the 1970s, with only Girdlestoneites now remaining on its original site.

– Girdlestone served as Mayor, and Page was not only an Alderman, but also a County Councillor and Justice of the Peace, for which he was awarded the freedom of the Borough of Godalming in 1924. Charterhouse has contributed much to education in the local community, not least in recent years through its partnership with Broadwater School. Oswald Latter (BH1890-1926) deserves special mention for his wide-ranging contributions to education, including many years as Chairman of Governors at Godalming County School and of the Godalming Higher Education and Corporation Museum Committees. Wilfrid Noyce (W36, BH50-61) is still commemorated for his local youth work in the Wilfrid Noyce Youth Centre in Godalming.

Books two and three take on a larger scale with good versus evil, young heroes, a healthy dose of romance, and plenty of laughs along the way.

Secret Alliances: Special Operations and Intelligence in Norway 1940–1945 Tony Insall (P67) An account of Anglo-Norwegian wartime resistance cooperation, which describes the remarkable achievements of brave and resourceful Norwegian agents working for the Secret Intelligence Service and Special Operations Executive (responsible for sabotage and subversion). These included prolific reporting on German warships such as the Tirpitz, leading to their damage or sinking, and Gunnerside, the successful attack on the heavy water plant in Telemark.

It contains a foreword by Sir John Scarlett, the former chief of the Secret Intelligence Service.

The Star in the Branches James Peake (D96)

In this story several characters from The Dorchadas Trilogy embark on a pilgrimage to Assisi, led by a priest from the Scottish Isle of Barra. They are joined by a former Hells Angel, an Italian pagan and a retired English Colonel. This unlikely group come together in Assisi and are captivated by the mystery and wonder of Assisi and its heroes, Francis and Clare.

The Star in the Branches, James Peake’s second collection, is an intense and heartfelt examination of memory, how it pains and consoles, deepens and shrinks, is both equal to, and less than, the objects and people who come to reside there. Simon Pratt (G53) under the pen name of Solzhenitsyn of Sherborne An 86 years old’s autobiography, telling of how he built up three multinationals from start, including Vancouver’s first Jazz Club, starting and developing the laminate Arborite, and starting and building up a range of baby products and childrenswear which sold in over 40 countries with over three thousand retail outlets in the UK, and finally in retirement starting and running a successful English Vineyard.

Benjamin Wilberforce-Ritchie (R12) A historical fiction based on the diary that OC Lieutenant Keith Furze (H1906) kept from January to June 1915. A dual novel, it weaves Furze’s experiences in with the author’s emotions, creating a novel that is factual, philosophical and moving.

Although Furze’s story guides the reader through the deplorable lows of life on the Western Front, it reminds us that no matter the challenges we face, friendship, hope and love will always help us overcome them.

I had a wonderful time at Charterhouse and still stay in touch with my Charterhouse friends. It was a real privilege to explore so many different activities. I was quite an active member of the Debating Society and I ran the Junior Society which was great fun and gave me a lot of confidence, which has helped me later in my life, especially in my career. I always recommend the School as there are so many opportunities. I probably had a little too much of a good time(!) as I had to redo my A levels afterwards. But this really grounded me, and I got the message that if you don’t work hard then you won’t do very well. So, with a little extra work, I went on to read Economics and Politics at Bristol University.

aving enjoyed my degree, it was a natural progression for me to enter a career in Finance so I researched various areas and made a number of grad scheme applications for investment management.

I undertook a graduate training scheme at James Capel Investment Managers, who would later merge with HSBC in the late 90s, and completed my Securities Institute Diploma. In total I spent five years with the Bank. From then I went on to work for various family offices and started to specialise in tech investing about 10 years ago.

Saunderites 1994 I was interested in tech because of the huge changes that were occurring. The premise of the tech boom in the late 90s was that the internet would pervade every aspect of our lives, but this hadn’t really happened yet. It was, however, being priced into the stock market. Some of the first iteration companies were highly indebted.

It took a while before the best management teams at say Apple, Amazon and Microsoft perfected their business models and started to scale.

Once that started to happen, the stock market really began to rate those companies in a meaningful way.

Straight after the financial crisis key companies went public like Google and then Facebook. The public equity market then had exposure to some of the companies that were taking on meaningful market share from traditional companies. It started with enterprise software, then consumer and now it is pervading health, energy and possibly transport and logistics.

Shortly after the financial crisis, I found myself lucky to be part of a team that saw tech as very cheap and started specialising in investment of it. I then went on to help start a tech firm in New York which was a tech hedge fund.

That was Tekne Capital where I became a Managing Director. I was in New York for about eight years and came back to London last year. Living overseas was a great experience – daunting at the beginning as you are starting from scratch, but I thrived on it!

New York is very different; it’s very meritocratic and success is recognised and rewarded which is great. But the pace is very intense, and the culture is very direct, which some might find overwhelming. People are always in a hurry there! And there’s definitely no chit chat about the weather!

Over those eight years I learn a lot.

My core role was to be in charge of raising capital in the business and helping to manage the team, plus some risk management functions.

Although I’m in Finance specialising in tech, rather than tech itself, I have been able to watch the advancement of technology through the last decade.

Even just thinking about how we communicate today, it would have been pretty much impossible to have worked remotely from home as we have all done during the pandemic, ten years ago. And with this advancement I can work remotely with America from here now, although I do hope to travel more again post-Covid.

I’m very fortunate in that I love what I do. I love looking at markets. I enjoy analysing what’s going on and the changes that are going on, particularly in this very disruptive environment that we’re in. If you want a career in anything you have to enjoy it, and everyone I know who is very successful does something they love.

You can’t pretend, not in the stressful times. For example, when the markets don’t go your way there’s actually nothing you can do about it.

Since I’ve come back to the UK I’ve been on a kind of sabbatical from paid work although I have continued to advise a couple of smaller companies. I’ve been helping the Design Museum in Kensington raise funds post-Covid. I live nearby and have always been a regular visitor so wanted to get involved. I’ve helped the museum to build the first

entrepreneurs’ programme in any museum in the UK. I’ve been very inspired by the museum and it’s an incredible legacy – Britain is so great at design and it has the potential to create so many jobs. We found there’s a huge gap where creative founders from underrepresented groups or low-income groups don’t have access to the type of networks they would want and need to start their own businesses.

I’ve also taken quite an active role in mentoring the founders on our programme as well as seeking out inspirational speakers and successful entrepreneurs to participate on the programme. We have been astounded by the talent that we have found and their progress during their time with us.

It’s been a very interesting and also a very humbling experience.

Looking back over my years in Finance and my career, one of my highlights would have to be working for Jacob Rothschild, 4th Baron Rothschild. This was a huge privilege. But I probably see my proudest moment as the work I am doing today: building this entrepreneur’s programme for the Design Museum. I feel like I’m doing some real good – both for the community and the museum.

he coming years will see our focus shift towards targeted investment in our academic and co-curricular facilities across Business and Leadership, Art, Drama and Music. Philanthropy and the generosity of our community has impacted on every generation during Charterhouse’s 411-year history. It will continue to be vital in the years ahead, ensuring that the pace of developments can continue, during this exciting period for the School.

Thanks to the generosity of OCs and parents, work will begin this summer on the first of these projects, the £1m+ refurbishment of the School’s 200 seat Lecture Theatre.

Last renovated in the mid-1980s, thanks to the generosity of OCs and parents in Hong Kong, we will create a modern, bright and spacious auditorium for 200. Due for completion

this autumn, the new Lecture Theatre will be supported by a range of technologies to deliver, capture and broadcast content. Retractable seating will ensure that the space remains as flexible as possible for the changing needs of the School including hosting a range of lectures, meetings and assemblies throughout the academic year.

Available for daily use across all facets of School life, access to the new Lecture Theatre will, from September 2023, be through the School’s new Business Leadership and Entrepreneurship Centre, a much more inviting entry point than the current staircases. The Lecture Theatre will also have an important role to play in delivering keynote lectures for our growing Business and Leadership programmes as well as a multitude of other extra-curricular activities.

The thing about Charterhouse is that it’s not just about the education, it’s about everything else.

I think that was me – I did ok academically but the opportunities I had at Charterhouse really shaped what I’ve gone on to do with the rest of my life.

I was a Music Scholar, playing five instruments, and did Music A Level alongside Theatre Studies, English and History AS.

I

first became involved with the BTT with The Music Man. I made the Ensemble, somebody didn’t turn up at rehearsals and suddenly I found myself playing a named character thinking: ‘This is much more than I expected!’

The next big show we did was Les Misérables; I think we were one of the first to do the Schools’ Edition. It was during this show that I became aware of the backstage stuff and that’s how it kind of started. Over the years I did various backstage roles and ran the box office and front of house for a time, so it gave me an all-round knowledge, albeit on a smaller scale, of the running of a theatre.

When I left School, I didn’t really know what to do. I had been involved with Godalming Theatre Group who performed their shows at the BTT, I was still interested in theatre, and it was my sister who suggested Guildford School of Acting. I applied and got a place, luckily on a Dance and Drama award which covered all my tuition. Without this grant, or my scholarship and bursary at Charterhouse, I couldn’t have attended either institution.

At GSA the ‘Graduation Show’ is run like a professional environment to prepare you for going out and getting a job! You apply for a role, interview with the technical tutors, and are allocated a role. Just ten minutes

before allocations were revealed, I was asked to go to the Production Office where they told me that they weren’t going to put me on ‘Graduation Show’. Instead, they wanted me to production manage the 2nd Year Musical Theatre shows, working with the 1st year production students.

After these two shows, an Academy came in, wanting to use our studio theatre and looking for someone to provide technical support to their production. Following this, a partner at the Academy said, ‘I’m doing a production of Cats – it’s fully licensed but it’s a new set, not the normal – would you be interested?’ And from there off we went. So by not doing my graduation show I picked up my first bit of work! About four years later, the Stage Manager from Cats rang me looking for another role to be filled, and then I met the next person who gave me the next job and so on...

After Cats, I joined my first West End show, Phantom of the Opera, one of the most famous shows in the world.

It was the original set whilst I was there, and it used all of the techniques that may seem quite ‘old school’ now but when it opened in the 80s were state-of-the-art! Whilst I was there, we had the 10,000th show and the 25th Anniversary Concert at the Albert Hall, both incredible landmarks in the show’s history.

I met my wife when she was Sound No3. on Billy Elliot the Musical, where I was Technical Assistant Stage Manager, and it was her who first introduced me to Back to the Future as a musical. She was mixing one of the initial workshops, and I went along to watch the presentation of it. It’s crazy – you’re in a black box, with no

set or costume, just cast and a small band, and you’ve got producers and investors who are about to chance a huge amount of money on a new show, and I’m at the back thinking: ‘I can see this show in my head’.

I rang up the Production Manager, who I’d previously worked with on Bat Out of Hell the Musical, and I said I’d just seen the workshop, and I wanted to do the show. The show went into development and in the meantime, I went onto the first UK tour of Matilda the Musical and then came back to London to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at The Palace Theatre, a venue steeped in theatrical history.

Whilst there I got the phone call saying ‘Back to the Future is happening; we’re opening in Manchester, then transferring to London. Given your experience and what you do we want you to be Head of Special Effects’. This is quite a unique role for a musical and not one that you would find on most shows.

I also had the opportunity to work with the Illusions Designer Chris Fisher, a member of The Magic Circle and the International Illusions and Magic Associate for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Together we created, rehearsed, and taught the illusions to the cast and crew and Back to the Future is trick after trick after trick! I can’t be too specific as to what illusions we create or how we do them, but sufficed to say, the audience is wowed every single show, especially by the Finale!

author, Bob Gale, will sit with you for hours talking about the original concept, the filming and how the DeLorean was originally going to be a fridge(!).

Alan Silvestri, the film’s original composer and Glen Ballard, the writer of Michael Jackson’s Man in the Mirror, wrote the music for the show and we also had Huey Lewis come to see the show. Then on press night, Christopher Lloyd, the original Doc Brown, came to see the show. That’s a fair bit of pressure, but very special to be part of their legacy! I was also incredibly lucky to work with Tony Award winner and Broadway legend Roger Bart playing the role of Doc Brown in the show.

What next after finishing on Back to the Future? I’m production managing two shows at the Unicorn Theatre in London Bridge, a place renowned for bringing theatre to children and from March will be joining The Grounded Events Company, delivering worldclass mass sporting events including the Brighton Marathon, Brighton Trail Weekend and Ragnar Relay UK. 35

e often celebrate our wonderful actors and actresses, but what about the magic that makes the production come alive?

“Costuming a large cast is a hugely time-consuming thing,” explains Emily Fox (BH95-), Artistic Director of Theatre.

“Obviously more difficult if it is period costume. I’m hoping it will be a bit easier with this year’s production of Fame.

Costume design falls mainly to the director (so me usually!) to decide what the look is going to be for a show.

We then use the BTT wardrobe and Surrey Arts to source costumes. I also trawl charity shops on a regular basis and pick up things that might one day be needed. Christine Todd, Personal Assistant to the Deputy Head (Academic), is my partner in crime in this, and I consider her to be our Theatre’s Wardrobe Mistress – although we don’t have anyone in that role officially. She mends, adjusts and even sometimes makes costumes/ accessories (like all those Les Mis sashes and the two Scrooge night shirts at the last minute!) where we struggle to find items. I wouldn’t want to embark on a School production without her!”

The School has a rich history in costume design which, most notably dates back to the 1960s, when the first Director of the Ben Travers Theatre, Geoffrey Ford (BH56-92, d. 2016), led the way in putting on incredibly elaborate and ambitious productions.

His go-to designer was Joyce Conwy Evans and she designed a number of sets and costumes under his direction.

Joyce Conwy Evans is an interior designer, costume and set designer and tapestry designer who is still producing work and teaching today.

Her work is incredibly varied, ranging from set and costume designs for Glyndebourne and Sadler’s Wells, to interior designs for private homes, restaurants and hotels, as well as producing designs for Windsor Castle.

The School has recently received a collection of these designs from the executors of Geoffrey Ford’s will.

Our Theatre is in the process of reviewing the BTT’s wardrobe, so expect to see more beautiful creations in the future. With the introduction of a new Fashion Design & Textiles Department, teaching GCSE Textiles, we can be sure to see the artistic flair of the Theatre continue to grow in the future.

THE STORY OF ARTIFEX

Creator of Things When Mark Begbie (BH08-) arrived at Charterhouse some 13 years ago, he had no idea he would become either Head of the Theology, Philosophy and Ethics Department, or Director of Creative Arts, coordinating one of the most loved events in the School calendar.

Here, Mark tells us all about Artifex and how it has developed to date: It was the first year that we put on our play in the Chapel, Becket I think, and this would end up as one of our traditions.

And each year the festival became more ambitious with the pupils fuelling the growth. We started to expand in visible ways, like the big stage on Founder’s Court in 2014, the first time we had ever had a stage there. This was to host a rock concert ran by the pupils – ludicrous and loud but great fun.

“I

started floating the idea back in 2009, and I remember talking to John Witheridge (BH96-13), Headmaster, about it. There was an Arts Festival already, and it was nice, but it was one night with some music and a few other bits and bobs.

What I was suggesting was something much wider – something for the masses. I wanted to get pupils going to things who would never have gone to things before. I wanted to get that 1st XI footballer to go to an arts event. Even if that was the only thing they went to in their whole time here. And suggesting something on that scale was a big change back then. I was proposing something that was in addition to what was already a very busy school year (although we’re so much busier now!).

There were various things that I felt it had to be. Above everything, I felt it 38

had to be pupil-led. This is not about bringing people in to prop up a programme, this is about the pupils generating artistic content themselves.

I also wanted it to be creative in the broadest sense of the word. It didn’t have to be fine arts – it could be food or cooking, or computing and game designing. So, with all these ideas, we began very slowly.

We started in 2013, and when I look back I think it was so easy! Essentially, it was about 15 events over three days, which was a bit of a culture shock at the time. The aim for 2013 was just to make it happen, with expectations very low. To me, it would have been a success if 15-20 pupils went to something when they normally wouldn’t have gone to anything. And we had that. The groundwork was starting to be laid, and there was a core of pupils who responded really well.

I started thinking of other ways it could mark its presence and provide an essential venue that was accessible to the whole School.

We got our heads together with the pupils and in year three the Dome was born! After 2015, the Dome became an established thing and continued to grow until in 2021 we hired two Domes.

When I compare 2021’s Artfex to 2013’s, you can see just how far we’ve come.

From literally nothing, we now have five days which contain over 90 activities and events! Each year something big and exciting has been added to the programme. Like the international food fair, or the Inter-House Kart Race, the brainchild of Charlie Timms (D20) in 2018. Or the talent show, Chouse Got Talent, exclusively run by pupils one night in the Dome, and the 2019 colour run, coordinated by Adam Schilders (H20) and Will Finnis (L20). And not forgetting one of our most popular larger events, introduced back in 2016:

Cinema on the Ceiling in Chapel. The pupils did an amazing job of organising it so every pupil had a bag of sweets, their duvet and a set of headphones.

The festival is great for the pupils: The pupil organisers learn a great deal, and not just about how the School works and the people here who make things happen. They also have to think about health and safety, purchasing and budgets, sourcing equipment, shifts, rotas, all sorts. So they develop leadership and organisational skills which they can take with them anywhere in life. With such a structured School timetable, organising Artifex is perhaps one of the most liberating things pupils can do. And, of course, things don’t always go to plan and mistakes are made, but that’s sort of the point. An educational institution should be providing a safe space for failure because that’s how learning happens.

And for the masses who attend? I think it’s possibly one of the greatest things we do in education here: so much is learnt in these five days, and so many individuals are inspired to want to contribute to future years.

We’ve had so many moments when pupils stood up and did amazing things you never knew they could. I’ll always remember Savva Shilin (H21) last year; he did impersonations of sound effects for the talent show, and it was just amazing. I feel so glad that we’ve created that space where these moments can happen.

As for the name, and how it became ‘Artifex’, you have our Artistic Director of the Theatre, Emily Fox (BH95-), to thank for that. The pupils and I had been struggling with a name and this suggestion came from a chance conversation in Brooke Hall. We wanted something characteristic of Charterhouse and, of course, we have the race ‘Pontifex’ so Emily casually

dropped the suggestion into conversation.

With the help of Jim Freeman (BH95-) I then investigated the Latin to see if ‘Artifex’ actually meant anything, and it means ‘creator of things’. We ran it past the pupils, and they loved it too.

So… ‘Artifex’ was born.

What’s next for Artifex? This year we’ve got a pupil Committee that will be running the whole enterprise, and we’ll have a longer lead-up than last year. The event will be even more special as it’s the 150th anniversary of the School’s move to Godalming and, with that in mind, we’d like to make our programme more community based, bringing Artifex to the Community. These are exciting times and I, for one, am very proud of what we have all achieved here.

Entrepreneurship Diploma Old Carthusians go on to do the most wonderful things, working in a vast number of sectors and industries. surround them. Topics such as GDPR, social media, cyber security and AI (among others) are all real, live issues that they will face in their first jobs outside of university and should they wish to start a business.

I

ncreasingly, we see a move away from the ‘traditional’ professions as our innovative and creative alumni go on to develop their own new initiatives, starting their own successful businesses, and spotting new gaps in the market. The number of OC entrepreneurs continues to grow steadily year on year (despite a global pandemic and its effects!) which is perhaps unsurprising given how the skills of an entrepreneur align so well with the skills of our pupils. Inquisitive, creative, analytical … our pupils show all these in abundance so it is only right that the School adapt to nurture these and bring entrepreneurship to the curriculum.

The new addition of a Charterhouse Entrepreneurship Diploma is not just about teaching entrepreneurial skills, it’s also about preparing Carthusians for future work, talking them through real challenges and real problems.

The course is designed to give them proper exposure to some of the technologies that they will be faced with, as well as the challenges that 40

The syllabus encourages the pupils to go from absolutely nothing to identifying a potential opportunity, and solutions to any problems with it, through to testing this opportunity.

This then becomes the kernel of the start of an idea which they take through the market research process, the business planning process and then the pitching process. At each stage the idea is discussed and tested through very lively peer to peer interaction. The course is intended to be a mixture of directed learning and freedom to explore, to feel less like a structured lesson but more an open forum. It’s designed to tick a lot of boxes in terms of developing skills such as self-awareness, creativity, teamwork, networking, communication and presentation skills among others.

The curriculum and activities are directed predominantly at the Specialists, as is the Charterhouse Entrepreneurship Diploma, although avenues are being explored as to how to bring this dimension to the Under School. The intention is not to make the younger years overly businessminded in a ‘shirt and tie’ sense but to make them more financially literate, teaching core finance skills that are relevant to them – think Klarna rather than mortgages.

There are a number of activities and events also attached to the entrepreneurship curriculum. The

lecture series is open to everyone in the School, complementing the ‘taught’ element. There’s been a vast range of speakers including entrepreneur and angel investor Simon Squibb, through to our own entrepreneurial OCs like Mark Fischel (g13), founder of Aklimate. There are also less formal activities, such as the ‘Office Hours’ initiative, which allow pupils a safe space to come and discuss their own ideas for start-ups without fear of judgement.

A number of corporate collaborations are also in the pipeline, with the first launching this year with Microsoft. OC Alex East (R08) leads our OC Tech

In order to facilitate this new teaching the School is in the process of fundraising for a Business Leadership and Entrepreneurship Centre, which will be located in the very centre of the School. Within it, there will be a large break out space, meeting rooms with video conferencing

and AV facilities, a seminar room for taught content (plus all School societies and the Enquiry series will have their home here), and a new look Lecture Theatre for the speaker series and for wider School use. Fundraising has been completed on the first phase of the project, being the new look Lecture Theatre, and this building is due to be completed by September 2022. The Hub will be a game changing facility for the School, and will facilitate the move to becoming the most entrepreneurial school in the world.

Society and has worked at Microsoft for over eight years. With his help, Microsoft and a further third party, have created a low code / no code programme teaching app creation with either limited or no code. The programme will be rolled out to 15 – 20 Specialists and will be delivered over 10 weeks during which time they will learn how to build a prototype app, and receive an official Microsoft certificate, which they can then promote on their LinkedIn profiles.

“In the summer of 2021 I worked at Charterhouse on their telethon. It was really interesting to raise money for the different projects that the School wanted to bring to life, and to get to talk to OCs from different walks of life, professions and locations. Those conversations were brief, but incredibly vibrant, and my fellow OCs would talk quite openly about their careers, their career paths, and pitfalls to avoid.

M

y very last call of the whole telethon was to Mark Garnier MP (P81) and I caught him just as he was about to leave his office.

Despite this, he made time for me and it was a very friendly conversation, not least because we are both Old Pageites.

Mark is the PM’s Trade Envoy for Myanmar, Thailand, and Brunei, so sits in the Department of International Trade.

After a while, he asked what I was interested in as a career. I said that one of my main interests was politics, as who hasn’t been following politics, especially over the last six or seven years? To my surprise, he asked if I would like to shadow him for a week in Westminster and I said: ‘Absolutely!’

There was no way I could turn that down!

I shadowed him in early December, and it was a great learning experience.

I did various bits of research around Myanmar, drafted replies to constituents’ emails, and was lucky enough to observe a hearing about business in Northern Ireland. I gained valuable insight into the role of a Trade Envoy.

He really went the extra mile and

I reported directly to him. This was a great learning experience, reporting to a senior manager and having that level of engagement. It was a bit surreal at times though – actually being in Westminster: I was in the lift with Keir Starmer and Matt Hancock was behind me in the coffee line one day!

This experience demonstrates how many OCs are willing to help, reminding me of when I used the OC network to find work experience last year. It can be daunting, when you first reach out to people through Charterhouse Connect – when you see the senior positions that are listed – but I have repeatedly seen that if you

work hard, and have ambition, there are plenty of people in the community who are willing to help and give you that first opportunity. And there’s even more potential if more people get involved.

I would counsel any OC looking for work experience, or even considering a change of job, not to be afraid to ask.

You might find yourself with a new coach or mentor to help teach you about their industry, or a great new opportunity. My experience came about because of a 15-minute conversation, which goes to show that anything is possible. So reach out, and make the most of our wonderful network.”

Since September 2020 we have been proudly supporting our mentors and mentees engage in micro-mentoring relationships. Since its launch we are delighted to confirm that we have nearly reached 100 relationships. We hope that these have been beneficial to all involved, and that the benefits of mentoring reach even more of the community over the coming year.

Last year, for the anniversary of our micro-mentoring launch, we added an additional wing to the programme, encouraging and supporting the development of reverse mentoring relationships.

Reverse mentoring is when more senior or established business leaders opt to be mentored by those more junior, and is particularly helpful when sharing knowledge about new technology, social media, or topics of cultural relevance.

Meet the Team

Studied Economics and Politics at Sheffield University, and joined Charterhouse in 2000. James leads the team but also teaches Economics and is the current Head of Girdlestoneites (having been Head of Bodeites previously for eight years).

Anna Dawkins Studied Geography at Cambridge University, qualified as a Chartered Accountant while working in Corporate Finance at Andersens.

She was a founding partner of a boutique corporate finance advisory firm, Argyll Partners.

Belinda Sartori Studied Economics at Newcastle University, then worked in Investment Banking for 15 years, most recently at Goldman Sachs.

ummer 2021 saw all pupils receive teacher assessed grades because of the pandemic.

Two-thirds of our pupils’ grades were at A* or A in 2021, but we recognise that success looks different for each pupil. In a difficult year pupils’ strong work ethic, coupled with the generous support of skilled and dedicated teachers, helped many to exceed their expectations. As a consequence, more pupils than ever were successful in taking up places at their first-choice university.

Application Cycle for 2022

Life After Charterhouse

We expect this current application cycle to be very competitive. Universities are struggling with excess numbers following the pandemic-related grade inflation over the last two years, and a higher number of pupils leaving school.

In September 2021, the UK government also announced that pupils sitting GCSEs and A levels in 2022 will receive fewer top grades than this year’s cohort. The 2022 exams will be treated as a ‘transition year’ with grade boundaries set midway between the pre-pandemic levels in 2019 and the record number this summer, with grades returning to normal by 2023. The proportion of pupils getting A*s and As is likely to drop by 10% on 2021 results, when 45% of entries were awarded A* or A, compared with 25% in 2019. This reduction in top grades means the most competitive universities are being much more cautious about the number of offers they give out than in previous years.

We work hard to prepare pupils for the increasingly competitive graduate market and make sure they develop essential employability skills. There are numerous societies, lectures and talks at Charterhouse and we offer CV, cover letter and LinkedIn sessions for pupils. Although it has been difficult for pupils to find work experience in an office or business, one upside of the pandemic has been the rise in virtual work experience opportunities and insight events and these are a great way to learn about different careers.

Oxbridge and International Oxbridge applications are increasingly competitive. In 2020, 43,840 people applied to Oxbridge for 8,642 offers. Of those accepted, 69% got 3A*s or better at Cambridge and 58% at Oxford. The number of places going to independent schools has fallen from 41% in 2011 to 29% in 2020.

Internationally, we have seen an increase in applications to both the US and overseas universities such as Bocconi.

To gain a greater understanding, all 2YS attend a talk about the graduate market which highlight the importance of work experience to increase their chances of a successful application. With over 82% of students being awarded a 1st or 2.1 degree in 2020, it is increasingly important that they have other ways to impress employers.

400,000 graduates leave UK universities each year and the top 100 firms look to recruit just over 21,000. PwC had over 100,000 applicants for 1250 places this year. *High Fliers Research

Final year students who’d completed an internship or other work experience were 3 times more likely to have received a definite graduate job offer, compared with those who’d had no work experience at all.

32% of the Top 100 jobs went to students who had done an internship with that employer. That figure rises dramatically for some sectors: 76% of graduate roles in Investment Banking and 58% in Law are filled by students who had already worked for the employer while at university.

School Music In the last few weeks of LQ2021 we were delighted to be enjoying a return of face-to-face teaching.

(C21) and Sam Troy (G21) all taking to the stage. The four girls sang Ben Ponniah’s Litany to the Holy Spirit and each of them then performed one of Vaughan Williams’ Four Last Songs. A particular highlight of the evening was Bach’s Cantata no.82, performed by Sam Troy and accompanied by a string ensemble and solo flute. Jonathan To (L), then in his first year, also joined the quartet playing the cello.

he achievements of our pupils, whilst engaged with Charterhouse@Home and Music@Home were, of course, worthy of celebration but it was so nice to be able to physically see and talk to people and hear the sounds of instrumental playing emanating from the Music Department once more.

CQ2021 ensured we all had lots to look forward to. In May we began our Evening Recitals programme, the first of which showcased truly exceptional performances by pianists Taki EjimaDalley (V) and Charlie Harrison (G21), alongside wind players Tony Zhang (H21) and Horace Choi (G). This was followed by our second Evening Recital just prior to Exeat. Vocal talent was firmly on display that evening with Eva Pomery (F21), Katharina Wallach (F21), Charlene Zehnder (F21), Nyx Fei 46

CQ also saw a wonderful array of pieces from pupils all across the School as part of our Composition Prizes. Judged by the Head of Composition at Winchester College, Mr Oliver Tarney, Elvin Lam (H21) and Jago Brazier (R) were judged Senior and Junior winners with the Intermediate prize going to Eddie Chai (R). Lancelot Liu (S) was rightly Highly Commended for his astonishing piece for solo piano.

By this point of Quarter rehearsals for the School musical, Les Misérables, had significantly ramped up and we

waited with baited breath to see if plans would be thwarted by this never-ending pandemic. And, unfortunately, Covid did rear its ugly head. Come performance week we found ourselves in an almost unheardof scenario – the first time cast and band would hear each other, would be on opening night itself! Both parties rose to the occasion and the cast were supported beautifully by a band of professionals and students alike. Huge congratulations to everyone involved as we saw five amazing performances to a live audience of grateful parents, students, friends and families, who all came along in their bubbles to support and celebrate this achievement.

After a welcome summer break the Music Department leapt into OQ2021 offering more opportunities for pupils to get involved with a range of new ensembles at Charterhouse: a Junior Chapel Choir alongside the main Chapel Choir; two Junior String Orchestras alongside Chamber Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra; and a Junior Wind Band alongside Jazz Band. It’s also important to mention that OQ2021 represents the first year that the School has been too big to fit everyone into Chapel, which means that for the first time ever there are two Chapel services, one for Year 9-11 pupils and one for the Specialists.

As rehearsals began for the next School production, all eyes were on the highly contested House Singing Competition. We were thrilled to

solos from Felicia Freeman (Su) and Hattie Palmer (F). The Junior Chapel Choir joined the Chapel Choir for the Parents’ Carol Service – the coming together of two Chapel Choirs for a major service, a unique event.

And no look back would be complete without the wonderful School production of A Christmas Carol. The company brought life and light and some much-needed theatrical festive cheer to full houses in the BTT.

welcome back to adjudicate Emily Dickens, British Soprano and Choral Conductor (plus former member of acclaimed vocal group Voces8). And what a treat we had! But, winners there must be and four winners were chosen this year – two boys’ Houses and two girls’. Lockites (with Bohemian Rhapsody) and Gownboys (with Waterloo Road) took the boys’ prizes whilst Northbrook (with Don’t Stop Me Now) and Sutton took the girls’. Sutton triumphed overall with their performance of Jessie J’s Price Tag. As we marched towards Christmas our pupils delighted us with the most moving services for Remembrance Day. Both Chapel Choir and Junior Chapel Choir performed in their respective services; Tim Colin (B) was masterful in his performance of The Last Post on both occasions. Such wonderful displays continued with Piano Prizes; an absolute triumph this year. Highly sought-after chamber musician and soloist Annabel Thwaite came to adjudicate our performers from Year 9 right up to Year 13. There were many highlights including Jack Wong’s (H) jazzy performance of Chris Norton’s Jingo, Taki Ejima-Dalley’s (V) rendition of Berg’s Sonata op.1 and Ava-Louisa Christiansen’s (F) performance of Scriabin’s Impromptu in B Minor, the latter winning the open class of the evening. But it was Justin Wang’s (L) astonishing 32 Variations in C Minor (Beethoven) that took the overall winner’s crown.

Late November saw the return of end-of-term festivities bringing joy to the campus like no other time of year.

The returning Junior Jazz Band and Big Band performed at the annual Jazz Concert (foot-tapping as always) and Chapel Choir gave two hauntingly beautiful Candlelit Carols. Chapel Choir, who rebuilt and reformed at the start of this Quarter (Covid more or less disbanded this ensemble the past two years), performed superbly, full of musicality. There were some beautiful contributions, including wonderful

As we turn our attention to LQ2022 we find ourselves in a very special year: one that celebrates the School’s move to Godalming 150 years ago (see page 26) but also the 150th anniversary of one of our most celebrated OCs, Ralph Vaughan Williams (see page 6). Not only will Music continue to play an important role in the fabric of the Charterhouse community but our aim is to bring this to the wider community.

It should be a very exciting year indeed!

In November 2021 Claire Wang (Su) won third place in the Wales International Piano Festival, a remarkable achievement as the age category was up to 20 years old. At the age of 14, Claire performs to an astonishing standard and we are thoroughly excited to see her progress.

In the same month we had further success with Justin Wang, no relation, who made it to the final of just three competitors from the Hong Kong and Macau region for the 2021 Steinway Competition.

The odds were stacked against him as the other two performed live from Hong Kong whilst Justin’s performance was livestreamed from Hall early one Sunday morning. Against the odds Justin won the ‘Professional C’ category.

Sport Cricket

Girls’ Football

Cricket made a welcome return in 2021 and we were able to play most of our matches. The weather, however, had different ideas and many games were lost. The 1st XI, led by Ayush Patel (S21), had a mixed year with some fine performances but struggled to convert them into wins. Girls’ cricket made a welcome reappearance, and we look forward to a full programme of this next year.

Whilst we usually would have two large squads, this year we had just one, although some new strong players did arrive in the Specialists, adding to our talented team. Captained by Alexa Mukherjee (Su) the girls gave good performances against Westminster and Gordon’s but unfortunately drew ACS Cobham in the cup. Next Quarter they will play in our Invitation Tournament and the exciting house matches, which are usually highly competitive.

Athletics It was great to get back to competition last year with a full fixture card.

Charterhouse hosted two 5-school meetings, as well as the Waverley Trials. The Removes were the strongest individual year group and the best athletes were in 1YS, one of note being Jeremy Ogbonna (H) who broke the School high jump record.

Boys’ Football The 14A and 15A teams both made a fantastic start qualifying for the Elgin League Semi-Finals in LQ2022 after finishing top two in their division. The 15D, 15E and 16C teams all had strong seasons with excellent coaching from their beaks. The 16A team lost four of their players to the 1st XI every week, yet showed fantastic strength to produce some excellent results. The senior teams all had productive seasons with the 5th XI’s 6-1 win at Eton a standout result. The 1st XI had a challenging season but finished on a high note with a brilliant 5-2 win over Millfield. OQ also saw the launch of a fantastic partnership with the Chelsea FC Foundation who provided coaching support as well as coach mentoring to the football beaks.

Girls’ Hockey OQ saw the return of competitive hockey for our girls. We also had our 1st U14 and U15 teams representing the School in girls’ hockey. The U14 girls qualified for the county cup finals and the 1st XI recovered from a rocky start to win a number of matches in the second half of Quarter. The leadership team of Emma Haynes (Su, 1st XI Captain), Hattie Cole (Su) and Pippa Rogerson (Su, Vice Captains) have definitely moved girls’ hockey to a good place.

Girls’ Lacrosse OQ saw the best season of Lacrosse to date with many players arriving in Specialists who had played before.

The girls worked hard with Phil Collier and results in matches went our way.

Dominating most with high scores we went into our Invitation Tournament looking strong. On the day, one result didn’t go our way and we ended up with the bronze; a good result as a newly formed team. House Lacrosse was also a highlight with Sutton taking

the win for the second year in a row.

Annabel Lawson (Su) did an incredible job as Captain this season.

Boys’ Hockey It has been fantastic to welcome boys’ hockey back to the pitches. The 1st XI enjoyed success in the early rounds of the national cup with a good win over Churcher’s College but were knocked out by Bradfield College in the last 32.

The U14A team have shown great promise and, along with the U14B team, remain unbeaten in Saturday fixtures. This team represented the School in the County Cup qualifying round and narrowly missed the final’s day on goal difference.

The block fixtures against Cranleigh, Eton and Bradfield have all been hard fought and the senior teams have struggled against combative opposition. All matches have been fiercely competitive so far.

Looking ahead to the spring, there will be some stiff opposition playing Reed’s School and Tonbridge as Saturday block fixtures and RGS Guildford in a Friday Night Light event on the last week of LQ.

Girls’ Netball This year we held a Pre-season Tournament for the 1st team to prepare them for the season ahead. Having not played last year and being newly formed, we didn’t know how we would fend but they played very well and won the tournament. The 1st team have also had some good wins against local schools, Tormead and Ibstock Place.

Annie Arbuthnott (Su) and Hattie Cole (Su) are leading the 1st squad with outstanding enthusiasm and the season looks bright.

This year we have six teams at senior level at a very high standard; those OC matches in future will certainly be of a good level. The Under School netball has also been successful, with every girl playing every week. Both the U14As and Bs remain unbeaten.

After Exeat we will host Invitation Tournaments for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and U14 age groups which are sure to be a highlight for the season.

Water Polo The boys’ U18 team had a fantastic start to OQ, winning their first 3 games.

Later in Quarter they then partook in both the London Schools’ Tournament and the ESSA National Tournament where Charterhouse have progressed through to the Plate semi-finals (in both), taking place in LQ. OQ also played host to the U16 House water polo tournament, where, after a tight game against Hodgsonites, Daviesites were victorious.

Fives Fives fixtures began again in September 2021. There were some tough losses against schools but, importantly, we did not give up and gritty performances led to hard-fought victories against Cranleigh and Westminster. The squad has come a long way and we look forward to the future.

Badminton With the restart of sport came 70 Carthusians back on the badminton courts, with the usual space pressures that this entails. The squad was soon up and running again, under the careful tutelage of coach Dave Greatorex.

Fixtures began and it was especially exciting to see first pair Nicole Poh (F) and Bill Zhang (S) (Captains) beat Harrow at a fixture that is often considerably one-sided in Harrow’s favour. The squad is improving rapidly and are very committed.

Basketball The U18 team played eight fixtures in OQ, winning five. Captains Aidan Tang (S) and Jeremy Ogbonna (H) have ably led throughout. The Charterhouse Basketball team reached the final of the 2022 Wellington Basketball Tournament, beating Eton College, Harrow, Winchester College and Wellington College before losing to Bishop’s Wordsworth School in the final.

Squash The 1st V have had a very successful start to the season with eight wins in friendly fixtures. The team also reached the semi-final of an Invitation Event at Surrey Sports Park and have reached Stage Two of the National Schools Championship. Captain Alex KelseyFry (S) has represented Surrey and Dominic Smith (V), ex Middlesex player, has showed outstanding skill at no. 1.

The U14 girls’ team reached the final stage of National Schools with an unexpected win over Brentwood, despite all being beginners. Good luck to them in March at Nottingham!

Racquets 1st pair Charlie Bridges (W) and Toby Pascoe (g) got the season off to a fine start beating Haileybury 3-0. The Yearlings also made a great start with Ollie Webster (D), Alex Magliana (D)

and James Robertson (D) all contributing to victories whilst the entire squad grows in strength.

Shooting National and Cadet Shooting Competitions are back, and two of the squad have also been selected for National Cadet Teams.

The training squad are all currently engaged in training and competing in the British Schools ‘Spring’ Small-bore League and the Cadet small-bore and air rifle competitions this Quarter.

Golf Golf has been competing in our usual range of competitions and friendly fixtures. Our competition squad has also enjoyed some individual and group coaching at Worplesdon GC, where we have played several practice rounds. We are currently preparing for the Gerald Micklem trophy at Woking GC in the second half of LQ.

CAP The Charterhouse Athlete Programme has grown this year with the welcoming of Fourths and Removes girls, totalling up to 79 pupils on the programme. Six weeks in to OQ we implemented the new testing battery assessing speed, change of direction, aerobic fitness and recording maturation, which brought out the competitive spirit in the pupils.

By the end of OQ all CAP pupils received a performance review which visualised all training monitoring and testing data that had been collated over OQ, allowing pupils to reflect and identify their strengths and areas to improve.

He was in the School Cricket 1st XI for his last three years, captaining in 1959, and in that year he also led Weekites in the unique House Match Final, spanning 14 days, when both he and Eddie Craig (R60) scored double centuries and took five wickets. He was also a more than useful footballer and fives player.

On leaving Charterhouse, he immediately got immersed in the OC Club as Secretary, and later he was an extremely active President of the Club, being, inter alia, integrally involved in the establishment of a full time Alumni Office within the School. He was also for many years President of the Charterhouse Friars.

Joe had a unique ability to make friends wherever he went and together with his wife, Chris, he ran a very popular pub in Buckinghamshire. Despite health problems in recent years, he was still a very regular presence at Arthur Dunn and Cricketer Cup matches.

He was actively involved with the running of the Old Weekites Association and we appreciated his inspiring leadership and thoughtful guidance on Association matters.

Old Weekites always loved hearing his stories about life at the School back in his day at countless drinks and dinner events over the years. No one cared more about Charterhouse than Joe. We will always remember him.”
