Conner, was in all respects worthy of men who sought to drive a hated foe from their homes." John Milton Clapp. Autograph letter signed, Beaufort, [South Carolina], 4pp. 25 February 1834, to E[liphalet] Case, Post Master, Lowell, Mass. John Milton Clapp (1810-1857) from Mentor, Ohio, graduated from Yale College in 1831 and shortly thereafter accepted a position as a professor at Beaufort College. In this letter to his "dear friend," he responded to a request from Case, who also published a newspaper in Lowell, "to "send a little fresh news along for your paper…." Clapp responded by describing an auction of enslaved individuals he had recently attended because, as he explained, "I like to look upon human life in all its phases." When he arrived at the auction site, he observed the crowd that at gathered. "On one side and about the stand of the auctioneer stood the gentlemen of the place, some with an air of business, others, of philosophic indifference. On the other side for some distance around, were scattered a varied herd of slaves-in all the different attitudes and aspects of a rabble at leisure: women sitting on the ground counting the toes of their little ones, men in knots of three or four kindly reciprocating the fumes of whiskey and other politenesses of life, boys and girls lying like blacksnakes in the sun, rolling in the dust or carrying about on their shoulders their still younger brothers and sisters….The slaves to be sold were near each other, most of them looked rather doleful, all anxious. The process of sale differed little from that of old furniture, except that the bids were higher and more cheerful. A slave for the field, in the prime of life sells at present I should think for about $500.00, those trained to domestic services for much more…. As the sale proceed[ed] I watched the looks of those who were 'knocked down' with no little curiosity. Most of them appeared indifferent to the exchange of masters, a few exhibited character, a very few feeling. I was …affected with the appearance of one family. It consisted of an ancient couple with a numerous brood of little ones. The face of the old woman resembled a superannuated wet-and-dried shop steeped in a strong decoction of vinegar and catnip….
