A Message from the President & CEO December is one of our favorite times of year at the Charlotte Symphony. Our halls come alive with thousands of people from across the region — families carrying on long-standing traditions, friends gathering to mark the season, and newcomers discovering the magic of live orchestral music for the first time. Seeing so many of you here reminds us that music belongs to all of us, and that it has the power to inspire, connect, and open our eyes to new perspectives. Throughout the year, we extend that energy beyond the concert hall, reaching thousands of students through our educational programs, and bringing music directly into neighborhoods, area hospitals and rehabilitation centers, and places like Roof Above, where music can lift spirits and offer hope. These experiences strengthen our sense of purpose just as much as the performance you hear tonight.

Applause You’ll notice that audiences applaud to welcome the concertmaster, conductor, and featured artists on stage. Some works may have several sections, or movements, separated by brief silent pauses. It is tradition to hold applause until after the last movement. If you are unsure, wait for the conductor to face the audience. But if you feel truly inspired, don’t be afraid to show your appreciation.

Christopher James Lees conductor Emerging American conductor Christopher James Lees brings passionate and nuanced orchestral performances to the stage, a fierce commitment to contemporary music, and a natural charisma to audiences all around the world. Lees has served as Resident Conductor of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra since 2018 and was Principal Conductor of the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra through 2024. In addition to the more than 70 concert appearances with the CSO per season, he has annually stepped in to conduct Subscription Classical performances, including two Gala concerts with legendary artists and Grammy Awardwinners Branford Marsalis and Rhiannon Giddens, respectively. An active guest conductor, Lees has conducted or returned for performances with the New York, Los Angeles, and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestras, as well as the Houston, Detroit, New World, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Kansas City, Fort Worth, North Carolina, Portland, Flint, Toledo, and Winston Salem symphonies. Additional engagements have taken him to the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Orchestra de Chambre de Paris, Aspen Philharmonic Orchestra, Cabrillo Festival Orchestra, and the Music in the Mountains Festival and Festival Internacional de Inverno de Campos do Jordão in Brazil.
Only the second American to be named a Gustavo Dudamel Conducting Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Lees made his debut with the orchestra in April 2013 and returned for concerts in February 2015. With the New York Philharmonic, St. Louis and Atlanta symphonies, among others, Lees has served as an assistant conductor for the world’s leading conductors, including Gustavo Dudamel, Paavo Järvi, Herbert Blomstedt, Leonard Slatkin, David Robertson, Robert Spano, Marin Alsop, Pablo Heras-Casado, Stéphane Denève, Susanna Mälkki, and Nicholas McGegan. Additionally, Lees was named Music Director of the Rock Hill Symphony Orchestra in 2023. A dedicated advocate for music of our time, Lees has premiered more than 150 works by a diverse range of composers, and collaborated closely with Pulitzer Prize winners John Adams, William Bolcom, John Corigliano, Jennifer Higdon, Joseph Schwantner, Steven Stucky, Caroline Shaw, Roger Reynolds, and Julia Wolfe. When not performing, Lees can be found riding roller coasters with his ten-year-old son, reading through the stack of books by his nightstand, or training for his next World Majors marathon.

Benjamin Geller viola
Benjamin Geller joined the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra as Principal Violist in 2014, where he leads the viola section and regularly performs as a soloist. His position in the CSO has afforded him many opportunities around the Piedmont region — from studio recordings to live solo and chamber performances, as well as meaningful work fostering the next generation of musical artists through his private teaching studio, the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestras program, and throughout the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System. Originally from Rockford, IL, Geller began violin lessons at the age of three in the Suzuki tradition at the Music Academy of Rockford. He continued his musical training at Butler University with Larry Shapiro, formally transitioning to viola with Michael Isaac Strauss, and completing a Jazz Minor with Mark Buselli. He went on to pursue his master’s at The Juilliard School, where he studied principally with Toby Appel and eagerly sought out coaching and lessons from anyone who would hear him. After graduating, Geller was awarded a fellowship with the New World Symphony in Miami, FL, where he performed for nearly two years before accepting his first professional appointment abroad.
Geller served as Associate Principal Violist of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in New Zealand, as well as Principal of the Auckland Chamber Orchestra, performing regularly as soloist with both ensembles when he wasn’t exploring that incredible country. After returning to the Chicago area, he joined the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra for two seasons before his appointment in Charlotte. In addition to his work with the CSO, CSYO, and CMS, Geller has taught and performed at the Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, NC, for nearly a decade. He has also coached and presented masterclasses at the New World Symphony, Brevard Music Festival, Bowdoin Music Festival, InterHarmony International Music Festival, the Arizona Musicfest Orchestra, and locally with NCMEA Regional Honors Orchestra, Arts+, Queens University of Charlotte, and UNC Charlotte. Geller performs on a custom Gasparo da Salò model viola by Theodore Skreko from 2007 and a Golden bow of Matthew Wehling’s from 2008.

Cantor Shira Lissek vocalist
Cantor Shira Lissek is the Senior Cantor of Temple Israel in Charlotte and a nationally recognized voice in contemporary Jewish music. Before coming to Charlotte, she served as Associate Cantor of Park Avenue Synagogue in New York City, one of the most influential musical and liturgical centers of American Judaism. Her artistry seamlessly blends tradition and innovation — honoring centuries of Jewish musical heritage while giving new voice to its evolving expression. A passionate advocate for new sacred music, Cantor Lissek is known for commissioning, premiering, and recording works that bridge Jewish tradition with contemporary musical language. For Festival of Lights, she proudly presents two newly commissioned works arranged especially for this historic evening — “L’dor Vador Forevermore” by Jacob Spike Krauss and “Sing! (Shiru Shir Chadash)” by Beth Styles — performed alongside selections from her acclaimed albums Ani Maamin: A Voice for Humanity and P’tach Libi: Open My Heart. Cantor Lissek’s performances have graced some of the world’s most iconic stages, including Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden, the Kimmel Center, and Seattle Opera. In Charlotte, she is a proud artistic partner of the Charlotte Symphony, performing at the Knight Theater, the
Carolina Theatre, and Temple Israel. She also appears regularly at Middle C Jazz, most recently in two sold-out programs with Noel Friedline, a Barbra Streisand tribute and Shira Lissek Sings the Great American Songbook, with a new program scheduled for March 2026. A dedicated educator and conductor, she founded TI Teens Rock and TI Kids Sing, inspiring and empowering the next generation of young Jewish musicians. She is a founding member of the North Carolina Jewish Clergy Association and serves on the board of the Greenspon Holocaust and Social Justice Education Center at Queens University. Grounded in heritage and guided by a belief in music’s power to unite, heal, and uplift, Cantor Lissek is honored to share the miracle of Hanukkah tonight through the enduring light of song. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music (M.M.) and Indiana University (B.M.), she is the proud mother of Reuben and Maayan.

Cantor Danielle Rodnizki vocalist
Cantor Danielle Rodnizki’s journey, beginning at Temple B’nai Israel in Clearwater, FL, fostered her deep understanding of the role of music in shaping a congregation’s spiritual life. Her early experiences in song leading with the North American Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY) and various summer camps, coupled with her work in congregations, paved the way for her cantorial studies. She has been song leading and worship leading for twenty years, and she is honored to have sung with summer camps, synagogues, and regional youth groups across the United States. Each such experience has energized her, consistently moved by the spark created whenever people sing together in community. In 2013, Rodnizki graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Washington University in St. Louis with a BA in Spanish and Psychology. A proud alumna of the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music at Hebrew Union CollegeJewish Institute of Religion, she was ordained in 2020. While in seminary, she participated in the prestigious Tisch/ Star Fellowship and was the recipient of various awards, including the Rabbi Rick Jacobs Prize for Creativity and Imagination in the Leadership of Worship.
Cantor Rodnizki is passionate about crafting innovative and intentional prayer experiences, and she is grateful to have explored this topic in her studies at HUC-JIR, as the Cantorial Intern at Central Synagogue in Manhattan, NY, and in her tenure as Associate Cantor at Westchester Reform Temple in Scarsdale, NY. She is thrilled that her journey has brought her to Charlotte to serve the incredible Temple Beth El community as their Cantor.

About the CSO
The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra (CSO) is one of the premier music organizations in the Southeastern United States and the oldest continuously operating symphony orchestra in the Carolinas. As Charlotte’s most active performing arts group, the CSO presents around 150 concerts each season, reaching more than 150,000 music lovers. The 2025–26 season marks the next chapter in the Charlotte Symphony’s artistic evolution under Music Director Kwamé Ryan. Framed by a season-long exploration of home — reflecting on belonging, identity, and place through a wide range of musical voices — the season offers bold new works, symphonic masterworks, and creative collaborations across the Classical, Pops, Movie, and Family series. Highlights include the debut of the CSO Spotlight Series, an everexpanding look at the work of this season’s CSO Spotlight Artist, Gabriel Kahane; performances of audience favorites like Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and Ravel’s Boléro; and more events that showcase the Orchestra’s breadth, from the music of Dolly Parton to Black Panther in Concert. Engaging with more than 15,000 students each year, the Charlotte Symphony nurtures the next generation of musicians and music lovers through its four diverse

youth orchestras, in-school education programs, instrument coaching, and Project Harmony, which offers free afterschool lessons in music and life skills to over 200 students in under-resourced areas. With its new mobile stage, CSO Roadshow, the Symphony extends its reach directly into neighborhoods, bringing live music to communities across the region. Founded in 1932, the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra continues to play a vital cultural role in the region and remains committed to the belief that music, accessible to all, enriches and unites our community.
