One Musical Family A Symphony Orchestra can feel like a large extended family at times. Instruments with similar characteristics — strings, woodwind, brass, percussion — work in harmony with their instrument relatives — and like branches on a tree, the whole becomes much greater than the sum of its parts.

This spring, every CMS fourth grade student will be introduced to the various musical families that make up the Charlotte Symphony through our “One Musical Family” program. This includes professionals both onstage and off who work together to bring music to our community, as well as the broader family of composers, musical genres, and cultures that comprise our musical world.

Tonight, we’re thrilled to have a very important member of the CSO family back on the podium: Music Director Christopher Warren-Green. So whether you’re joining us for Holst and Elgar or Mozart and Wirén, we’re so glad that you’ve decided to invite us into your home.

Now in his 11th season with the CSO, Maestro Warren-Green also serves as Music Director of the London Chamber Orchestra.

British conductor Christopher Warren-Green has worked extensively in North America and Europe, with key engagements including The Philadelphia Orchestra, the Detroit, Houston, St. Louis, Toronto, Milwaukee, Seattle and Vancouver symphony orchestras, the Minnesota Orchestra, Washington’s National Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra amongst others.

Maestro Warren-Green returns to Charlotte to open the 2020/21 season with virtual programs featuring works by Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Brahms, and Dvořák.

He also leads the CSO in “A Concert for Charlotte” at Truist Field, an event designed to celebrate Charlotte and help bring the community back together through music. A product of community music education, Warren-Green plays a key role in the CSO’s educational efforts, including two youth orchestras and Project Harmony, an afterschool program serving high-need areas.

In addition to his international commitments, he has been invited to conduct at the wedding services of TRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, in 2005, TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at Westminster Abbey in 2011 and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, in 2018. He conducted the London Chamber Orchestra on the occasion of HM The Queen’s 80th birthday and the Philharmonia Orchestra for Her Majesty’s 90th birthday concert at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, as well as HRH The Prince of Wales’ 60th birthday concert in Buckingham Palace.

A violinist by training, Warren-Green began his career at the age of 19 as concertmaster of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, followed by the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music, having been a Professor there for eight years, and has appeared numerous times on television and radio. He has recorded extensively for Sony, Philips, Virgin EMI, Chandos, Decca and Deutsche Grammophon, and records with the London Chamber Orchestra for Signum Classics.

This roster lists the full-time members of the Charlotte Symphony.

The number and seating of musicians onstage varies depending on the piece being performed.

MUSICIAN SPOTLIGHT Ellen Ferdon, viola Ellen Ferdon began playing the viola around the age of nine, when it was introduced to her through her public school’s music program. Ellen attended UNC School of the Arts where she studied under Sally Peck. Peck, Ellen says, was the teacher who pushed her to her limits, and she began playing professionally throughout the area. She joined the Charlotte Symphony in 1983. Outside of the Charlotte region, Ellen has performed at the Aspen Music Festival and the International Music program through UNCSA. When asked what she loves most about being a professional musician she responded, “Sitting so close to the world’s greatest soloists and artists is electrifying! A few years ago, Yo-Yo Ma performed with the CSO. After his solo, he played a Mozart symphony with us – sitting on stage in the cello section, right beside me! It was an honor.”

We creatively strive toward being an industry leader in imaginative, relevant programming on and off the stage. Project Harmony serves more than 150 students in critical-need areas with free after-school lessons in music and life skills.

Inspired by the El Sistema youth development program of Venezuela, Project Harmony expanded to four locations in 2018-19.

We value diversity and intentionally work to break down barriers to arts access.

Our Music For All program affords members of our community holding EBT cards admission to any Symphony experience at $1 per ticket. We buck industry trends by offering opportunities to women and to musicians, composers, and conductors of color. We serve our area’s youngest musicians through two diverse youth orchestras, and aim for these ensembles to reflect our wider community.

Divertimento for Strings in D minor, K. 136 (1772) premiere: unknown

The Divertimento for Strings in D, K. 136, is one in a series of three such works (along with the Divertimentos in B-flat, K. 137 and F, K. 138) the 16-year-old Mozart completed in Salzburg in early 1772. That fact is virtually all that is certain about these engaging compositions.

The title “divertimento,” which typically refers to music written as entertainment for parties, was applied to the compositions not by Wolfgang Mozart, but most likely by his father, Leopold. Some scholars have suggested that the composer envisioned these divertimentos as concert pieces, rather than background music.

Further, it is not clear from the autograph score whether Mozart intended the works to be performed by a string quartet, string orchestra, or, perhaps, either type of ensemble, depending upon musician availability. Mozart biographer, Alfred Einstein, theorized that Mozart may have planned to transform these works (via the addition of appropriate wind instruments) into symphonies for use during his impending visit to Italy.

By the age of 16, Mozart, along with his sister and father Leopold (above), had traveled to and performed in all of the major courts and capitals of Europe.

Whether the works in question are classified as divertimentos, string quartets, or symphonies matters little in the enjoyment of their considerable charms.

The Divertimentos, K. 136-8, are accomplished, engaging works that offer tantalizing glimpses of the mature genius that soon blossomed. They also retain the distinction of being the earliest concerted instrumental pieces by Mozart to maintain a regular presence in the performance repertoire.

The Divertimento for Strings, K. 136 is in three movements. The lively first (Allegro) movement is based upon two themes, introduced, respectively, by the first and second violins. The central Andante is notable throughout for its restraint and lyrical beauty. The finale (Presto) brings the piece to a brilliant close.

Slow Burn (2017) premiere: March 18, 2018 in Sarasota, Florida

Slow Burn, by the American composer, violist, and educator Jessica Meyer, exists in versions for String Quintet and String Orchestra. The work’s premiere took place on March 18, 2018, performed by the string quintet Sybarite5.

The composer provided the following program note: This piece was premiered at McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre in Sarasota, Florida to accompany a dancer from the Black Diamond Burlesque company — which is essentially all you need to know in order to conjure up the appropriate amount of sass you need in order to play it effectively!

It is also a combination of all the groovy music I like to listen to, at the heart of which is a theme that most singers wind up singing about at some point: that unrequited love that was never meant to be.

jessicameyermusic.com As a critically acclaimed violist, Jessica Meyer explained why she embarked on her composition career only six years ago in a recent interview for the record label Bright Shiny Things: “After many, many years of playing new music and helping kids create their own music, I could not ignore the nagging feeling I had that I was not doing what I was supposed to be doing. I started to write for myself, but once I started writing for other people in 2014, the floodgates were opened and I knew that without a doubt that was what was missing from my life.”

Serenade for String Orchestra Opus 11 (1937) premiere: October 28, 1937 in Stockholm, Sweden

Swedish composer Dag Wirén wrote his Serenade for String Orchestra pursuant to a commission from conductor and violinist Tobias Wilhelmi and the Stockholm Chamber Orchestra. Those artists performed the Serenade’s premiere on October 28, 1937 in the Hall of the National Museum in Stockholm. The Serenade for Strings quickly enjoyed great popularity, not only in Sweden, but throughout Europe.

Wirén composed the Serenade for Strings at a time when the music world was attempting to come to grips with avant-garde forms of expression, often embracing rhythmic complexity, atonality, and violent sonorities. In his program notes for the Serenade, Wirén wrote: “The purpose of this little Serenade is simply to amuse and entertain, and if the listener, when the last note has faded, feels cheerful and happy, then I have reached my goal.”

The Serenade is in four movements. The opening Prelude (Preludium. Allegro molto), with its lively, cheerful atmosphere and wealth of thematic material, evokes the spirit of Mozart, one of Wirén’s most admired composers. In the second movement (Andante espressivo), pizzicato strings provide the accompaniment to duets by various instrumental groupings. The entire ensemble plays pizzicato at the movement’s conclusion. The third movement is a lively Scherzo (Allegro vivace) in 6/8, featuring beguiling syncopations. The central Trio (Poco meno moto) takes on an energy of its own, leading to a reprise of the Scherzo. The coda combines elements of both the Scherzo and Trio.

The Serenade concludes with a spirited, optimistic March (Tempo di marcia, molto ritmico), capped by a quartet of hushed pizzicato notes.
