Inclusion Charlottesville Parks & Recreation welcomes individuals of all abilities to participate in all programs and activities. All programs offered by Charlottesville Parks & Recreation encourage participation by a diverse population, accommodate those with varying abilities and support diverse learning styles. When participants require additional support, our Adaptive Recreation and program staff develop accommodation plans and provide other assistance as appropriate. What is Inclusion? We offer reasonable accommodations to enable an individualʼs successful participation in our programs and services. It is important to realize that all participants (no matter what their abilities) are required to meet the minimum participation guidelines and desired behavior expectations of a program (check with the programʼs supervisor to see what these are). An accommodation assists staff in creating an environment where the participant can have a successful and enjoyable recreation experience.

Please contact Adaptive Recreation for more information about inclusion. adaptive@charlottesville.org | (434) 970-3264

ADAPTIVE

Participant Levels At the City of Charlottesville, the safety and well-being of our participants are paramount to us and we want those who participate to get the most out of every activity we offer. We are now implementing participant levels to our activities, based on our experience and research into what a participant can expect physically and sensory-wise during the activity. This is to inform participants of what a trip may involve and to encourage them to register for programs that will be the most enjoyable and successful based on their needs. If you have any questions about where a participant may place within the levels, please contact us and we will be more than happy to consult with you. NOTICE: At any time, should the staff determine that a program or activity is not in the participantĘźs best interest or well-being, staff will contact the participant and/or caregiver to discuss available options.

Parent and Infant/Toddler Learn-to-Swim Classes Ages 6 months - 3 years Access Arts Charlottesville/Albemarle (AACA) promotes experiences in the arts for individuals with disabilities. If you are interested in joining the committee, participating in programs or learning about AACA, call Sarah Blech at (434) 970-3264. The local committee meets quarterly, September through May.

Workshops

American Red Cross (ARC) Parent and Infant/Toddler Aquatics classes are designed to orient young children to the water and prepare them for Learn-to-Swim classes in the ARC Preschool Aquatics program. These classes give parents safety information and teach techniques to help them orient their children to the water and provide direction regarding how to supervise water activities in a responsible manner. This program is a bonding experience that will fill instructors, parents and children with wonderful lifelong memories.

AACA sponsors art workshops at schools, recreation centers and day programs led by artists with and without disabilities. In 2017, over 7,000 participants were involved in these workshops. Contact Sarah Blech at (434) 970-3264 or blechs@charlottesville.org to receive a monthly calendar of events or to learn more about workshops and residencies. Like us on Facebook at Access Arts Charlottesville/Albemarle.
