Dear Friends, You have been our rock during a challenging time. Thank you for making 2020 yet another remarkable year for the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA and the animals in our care. Our dedicated staff has done an incredible job of increasing our lifesaving capabilities through adoption, foster, transport and clinic services. Despite the difficulties of 2020, we have stayed focused on being there for people and the pets they love.

The year 2020 marked the highest number of adoptions in the history of the organization. We placed 3,758 pets into homes. Before adoption, many pets spent time in foster care. We could not have accomplished everything we did last year without the support of our foster families. After March 2020, over 70% of our pets were placed into foster care. Not only did they thrive in their foster homes, but they were also more likely to be adopted due to promotion by their fosters and being their best selves when they met potential adopters.

Not every shelter or community has the resources we do. Knowing that 2020 would be a struggle for many regions, we knew that we had to be

The only way forward in animal welfare is through people and their love for pets.

Our Compassionate Care Clinics and Microchip & Rabies Clinics have been more vital than ever before. In addition to monthly Microchip & Rabies Clinics, we held seven Compassionate Care Clinics, with each clinic’s appointment slots being filled weeks in advance.

Recognizing our community’s need for low-cost, high-quality care to get through these tough times, we will be holding two Microchip & Rabies Clinics and two Compassionate Care Clinics every month in 2021. We are committed to keeping healthy pets in loving homes.

WHAT IS THE LIVE RELEASE RATE? The Annual Live Release Rate is the percentage of live outcomes for all animals who leave our care. We have had a live release rate of 95% since 2013. Our live release rate for 2020 is the highest on record for the SPCA. IS THE CHARLOTTESVILLE-ALBEMARLE SPCA AFFILIATED WITH ANY NATIONAL ANIMAL WELFARE ORGANIZATIONS? Compassionate Care Clinics In 2020, the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA held seven Compassionate Care Clinics. These clinics provided a wellness exam, pet-care education, rabies vaccines, other vaccines and routine wellness care at a very reduced fee for clients showing proof of public assistance to qualify for care. We were able to provide services for 242 pets through Compassionate Care Clinics in 2020. By providing this service to our community, our hope is that all owners are able to have access to veterinary care for their beloved pets. “Unable to afford pet” is one of the common reasons an animal is surrendered to our shelter, with medical issues being the main expense. Compassionate Care Clinics can help reduce the sense of financial insecurity that results in loved pets being surrendered to our shelter. In 2020, every Compassionate Care Clinic

had a wait list. In order to meet the needs of our community in 2021, Compassionate Care Clinics will be offered on the second and fourth Sunday of every month.

Inventory is always changing, so every time you visit you’ll find new unique treasures, home goods, clothing and more. SPCA Retail Store

Find great items for your pets at the SPCA Retail Store. We carry a wide variety of pet supplies, including name brands like Kong, Nylabone, ThunderShirt, Nature’s Miracle, Up Country, Yellow Dog Design, Max & Neo and more! We offer specialty cat and dog treats to keep your pets happy, as well as custom dog tags.

The SPCA Retail Store is located at 3355 Berkmar Drive, Charlottesville, and is open the same hours as the shelter.

Paddington

Paddington was only three months old when he was surrendered to the SPCA. He was immediately placed in our Critical Care Ward because his hind legs didn’t function. He was examined by our veterinarians, who found that he was a generally healthy kitten despite not having the use of his hind limbs. It didn’t take long for everyone to fall in love with him!

A staff member built him a wheelchair, Paddington was on the news, and became a bit of a star! While he was in the shelter, it was noted that he may have incontinence issues but that he tended to find his way to his litter box.

However, as he was placed in home trials with potential adopters, it became apparent that his incontinence in the shelter, where everything is designed to be cleaned, was not as easily handled in a typical home. It seemed like placing our special needs little kitty would be more difficult than we had hoped.

Meg had been begging Maddie to agree to bring a kitten into their little family, which at the time consisted of two older cats, Pluto and Ouija. Maddie wasn’t 4

sure about adopting a kitten. She’d always preferred to adopt older cats that were more likely to be overlooked in the shelter. But then one night, Maddie and Meg were checking out adoptable kittens on the SPCA’s website. Paddington’s photo caught their attention, and he stole their hearts.

Love isn’t always easy. They hoped that their experience with geriatric cats would help them learn to care for a paraplegic kitten, but there were tough days. Maddie said, “On the hardest days that we had fostering him, I remembered that it would be hard to adopt him out, so I had to figure it out.”

She said that having a community has been helpful. The vets at the SPCA during the first couple of months were an invaluable resource. Now she has a community right at home. Everyone at the groomer that Paddington goes to knows him and loves him. Even her other cats have stepped up to help!

Paddington learned how to clean himself from watching his older feline friends. To anyone thinking of adopting a special needs pet, Maddie wants you to know that you’re not alone! There are resources to help you with anything.

And once you’ve adjusted and made room for your special needs pet, you won’t regret it. Maddie said, “We love him so much! He’s really been a light in our lives. We’re really lucky to have him.” Paddington never let anything hold him back, and just like any other kitten, he loves causing trouble. Maddie shared that he chases his own tail, and Pluto's and Ouija’s tails. He plays with them like he’s one of the big cats, and it’s like he’s just a normal kitten. Pluto is teaching him how to cause trouble around the house, and Ouija is

teaching him how to groom himself.

After running around the house with his adopted family, Paddington will pull himself onto the couch to sleep with them.

Paddington got to see his first snow in December, and it was magical for him.

Maddie held him up to the window, and he just chittered at the snowflakes.

We’re so glad that Paddington is experiencing so many firsts ... and also that he experienced a last when he left the shelter for the final time.

Compassionate Care-A-Van The Compassionate Care-A-Van is a state-of-the-art mobile unit that allows the SPCA to expand our lifesaving work beyond our physical shelter. The Compassionate Care-A-Van is made possible by community support and a matching grant from the Perry Foundation. You’ll see the Compassionate Care-A-Van on the road heading to another shelter to pick up animals, parked outside of a business for an adoption event, or set up for an event in communities in need of support.

Diamond Something little can make a big difference! In the spring of 2020, right in the midst of lockdowns and pandemic safety measures being implemented, Janelle and her family came to the SPCA to meet Diamond. When her son saw the five-pound puppy, he fell in love with her. He told Janelle, “Mom, I think she’s the one.”

They brought Diamond home to foster while they waited for her to be scheduled for a spay surgery. By the end of the weekend, everyone was in love with her. It was unanimous: Diamond would be a part of the family permanently! Janelle’s mother is a cancer survivor who also benefited from the family adopting, as now she has a little friend to spend time with.

Of course, adopting a puppy isn’t all snuggles and kisses! Janelle shared, “When Diamond was officially ours, the negatives of having a puppy were waking up all times of the night with her because she wanted to play at random times (as a mother it was like having a newborn all over again).” But it was worth losing some sleep because Diamond brought so much love into their household. Diamond has been a great source of entertainment during the pandemic, and she made 2020 much easier to handle.

Diamond enjoys going to work with Janelle at Neroli Med Spa to meet new people. She’s up for anything as long as there are people, but that doesn’t mean she’s a down-to-earth pup. Janelle describes her as “boujee and feisty.”

Diamond has been an amazing addition to the family, and Janelle says, “She is our perfect fit!”

Foster Care Saves Lives!

We are so grateful to every foster family that opened their homes to pets in need in 2020. Here are just a few of their incredible stories.

My family and I started fostering full time in April. We wanted to do something to help the SPCA while we were home during the COVID-19 shelter-at-home period. We started with one sweet cat named Nacho. After Nacho was adopted, we wanted to take in a mother with kittens. That is where our love of fostering really took off.

Witnessing the love and care a mom cat gives her kittens was awesome (in the true sense of the word). Also, there is nothing cuter than kittens playing together, sleeping in clumps, and just generally being goofy. I was happily surprised to find that after the kittens are adopted, it’s not hard to find a home for their fantastic mom too.

There are so many wonderful people in our area ready to adopt. There is a person for every cat! Now whenever our last foster kitty is adopted, we ask for more. It’s become a normal part of our lives, and one that won’t change even when our lives get back to what they were before COVID-19. ~Betsy Greco

Another Word for Foster Fail?

The English language is wonderful, holds such unexpected joys and has super terminology to describe a group of animals. For example, a group of butterflies is a “kaleidoscope,” giraffes a “tower,” rhinos a “crash,” flamingos a “stand,” squirrels are a “scurry,” parrots a “pandemonium,” and skunks a “stench.”

It really evokes and describes exactly what you imagine the group of animals to be.

A group of dogs and puppies is a litter or a pack. After our latest fostering adventure (which turned out to be a Foster Fail), we think there could better better words for a group of our furry friends.

We have just finished fostering Cara and her eight puppies for several weeks. The puppies were about three weeks old when they arrived. We have fostered consistently over the past five years, but never so many or so young as this time.

It was a very new experience for us.

It’s really hard not to love a bunch of puppies (unless you are a cat!). Their exuberance, playfulness, the way they look and play etc., etc.,—bottom line they are so, so, so darn cute.

So, a pack or litter of puppies really doesn’t do justice to them — it just doesn’t describe how endearing or fun they are. So maybe here are some better descriptions.

Love of puppies 1) Have you ever seen puppies sleeping together? On top, underneath, entwined with each other in a deep slumber all cuddled up to each other. Packed together like some impossible Tetris game. Maybe a “cuddle” of puppies would be a better term?

Whenever we stepped into the kitchen we would be greeted by eight puppies (& Mum) jumping, vying for attention, clambering all over each other and us, just excited, really enthusiastic. It was hard to know where to put your feet! It was literally a sea of loving puppies.

2) We kept the puppies in our kitchen, which we blocked off with a baby gate.

So maybe a “love” of puppies.

Wonder of puppies 3) With their big, round eyes, button noses, large heads, energy, glossy coats, goofy antics, and super good natures, puppies are undeniably adorable. We had plenty of visitors who came to visit them. Watching our visitor's joy and our puppies' joy was a true joy… really wonderful. So maybe a “wonder” of puppies.

Services Offered Compassion is just one of the many services we provide at the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA. We are proud to offer our knowledge and skills to the greater community. All of our services are in an effort to advance the compassionate treatment of animals, promote permanent homes, further education and outreach, and provide low-cost services to our community.

Reuniting lost pets with their owners is an important part of our mission. Clinics are held on the first and third Sunday of every month.

Pet owners in need of help feeding their pets can pick up cat and dog food at the shelter or at off-site pet food pantries.

LOST/FOUND

SPAY/NEUTER

Reclaim a lost pet if it has strayed and found its way to us. Please call us as soon as you realize your pet is missing and file a lost animal report.

Spaying or neutering your pets helps prevent additional unwanted litters in our community. Schedule your animal for this service today.

We offer free spay/neuter services for community cats living in Albemarle County and Charlottesville.
