Hugo aka Meatloaf

Hugo came to the SPCA as an owner surrender with multiple significant health concerns. He had a loud heart murmur, enlarged lymph nodes all over his body, severe skin disease and ear infections. During treatment, our veterinarians discovered that Hugo also had severe cardiac disease.

Hugo spent time in several loving homes where his caregivers doted on him and helped administer lifesaving care. Hugo thrived in foster care, and his fosters became great advocates for him.

Hugo was referred to Virginia Veterinary Specialists for an echocardiogram and consultation with the cardiologist. He was diagnosed with patent ductus arteriosus and severe left-sided heart disease. Thanks to the funds raised by our amazing community, Hugo was able to have heart surgery!

Hugo was adopted by the McCoys on November 30, ten months after arriving in our care. There were some dark times when we wondered whether he would become a hospice case and what his longterm quality of life would look like. He exceeded expectations from top to bottom, and his new dad reports that he is still going strong! “We renamed Hugo Meatloaf, which he has really taken to! Since we’ve brought him into our home, he has settled in, almost like he has always been here, ” his new dad says.

“He and his new sister, Pepper, tend to play a few times a day and get daily hour-long walks. He makes friends with every dog he meets, and he gets along really well with our cat, Ollie. He hasn’t shown any signs of his medical condition slowing him down at all! We are so happy to have him and love his personality. He fits in very well with our family. ”
